MSNBC's Bashir Joins an Architect of Failed Obama Stimulus in Trashing Perry, Cain Tax Plans

By Ken Shepherd | October 26, 2011 | 16:14

MSNBC's Martin Bashir tag-teamed with liberal pundit Jared Bernstein to slam Herman Cain and Rick Perry's tax plans today, insisting that both are a sop to the "rich" and an act of "class warfare" against the middle class. An onscreen bio graphic noted that Bernstein used to work for Vice President Biden, but that fact would go unnoted for any listeners to the program via MSNBC's SiriusXM satellite radio channel.

Also unaddressed by Bashir was that while Cain, Perry and the other GOP candidates are running against the Obama economic record, Bernstein had a hand in fashioning the 2009 stimulus package.

In a January 2009 memo co-authored with then-Obama economic advisor Christina Romer, the pair argued that a stimulus bill would stop the upward march of unemployment at 8 percent in the third quarter of 2009, with unemployment falling throughout 2011 and reaching around 5.5 percent by Election Day 2012 (see graph from that report below the page break).

For his part, Bernstein still defends the 2009 stimulus package as a success. Unemployment right now stands at 9.1 percent.

How to define 'success'

Submitted by coin of the realm on Wed, 10/26/2011 - 7:57pm.

in the case of the stimulus? Based on the politicians promises or based on the analysis of the CBO, Moody's and other econometric shops? further, is the determining factor an all or nothing metric? If it only produced 1 million jobs and the president promised 4 million is it a failure? Are there any other factors to consider in measuring success of failure?

To say point blank that the stimulus failed and therefore was completely ineffective it followers that another stimulus is a stupid idea. To admit to the best available data saying that the stimulus had positive effect it follows that more stimulus will have more positive effect and therefore reasonable policy.

The first statement reflects politics--which is as we know, often based on falsehoods or manipulative in its focus on a single element of truth that doesn't accurately describe reality. The second statement reflects rational analysis and facts.

Not that it is bad to be politically motivated, as you are, but it should not be presented as exposing such political propaganda in the name of truth. It is not truth. It is political propaganda designed to help conservative causes just the same as Obama's promise was political propaganda designed to help his cause.

Truth is that thee stimulus worked. more will help.

How to define 'success'

Submitted by The Vet on Thu, 10/27/2011 - 1:51am.

Short concise posts that will entice others to read the entire thing. Not bore them after 3 sentences.

Fail troll. Fail. Fail. Fail.

What point were you trying to make? Other than reminding us you failed most of the English classes you sat through for 12 years.

What point you say?

Submitted by coin of the realm on Thu, 10/27/2011 - 3:01am.

What point are you trying to refute is a fair question to ask. If it is that I have grammatical or spelling errors in my posts then well made. What is it you are trying to do with such meaningless posts? I wonder if you consider a mistake in form or affiliation to be the same as or even superordinate to the quality of the argument and supporting data? It is not like I am doing my own macro analysis with data I got from a few guys at the local bank. I am basing my argument on data from the most respected sources of this particular type, un-biased , in depth use of the raw data to present reports that are used by businesses and governments to make decisions. I am not repeating something that some mouthpiece on the news just said bc he felt like it.

Almost all economists who are expert in macro analysis of our economy agree that the stimulus worked. To what extent and which elements were most effective is the area of difference. The voices calling it a failure are news people, politicians, political commentators and all manner of layman.

Maybe I failed English but that doesn't mean the the people and data I reference in my posts is, by extension, incorrect.

Submitted by coin of the realm on Thu, 10/27/2011 - 3:23am.

I got it. I just jumped past that request and focused on the insult that followed. It seems that there almost always is an insult and often times the insult is the only content.

My bad. I am multitasking and tired which combine to make me hasty and reactionary.

Despite this somewhat humble acceptance of my flawed posts I feel almost certain that any response will contain an insult or negative characterization.

Why isn't unemployment below 8%, if stimulus worked?

Submitted by ekslib on Thu, 10/27/2011 - 3:36am.

Obama said the stimulus would keep unemployment below 8%.
By the way, how are those solar panels doing? The ones Obama promised to put on the WH.

into prosperity? Or, are you saying that another stimulus doesn't have to be paid for, and we can just print the money?  Do you work for OFA, White House. gov, the DNC or OWS?

"Truth is that thee stimulus worked. more will help".  Link please, to anyone except the already mentioned OFA, White House. gov and the DNC, or to Keynesian economists, that provide proof that Stimulus One worked?

Oh troll, I predicted an asteroid would hit earth in 2010, thus wiping out half of the population. Don't forget to link to that when someone starts talking about the places asteroids have struck the earth in the last 20 years. Mmmmmkay?

Success in getting the money to the DNC $$ launderers

Submitted by gopcongress on Wed, 10/26/2011 - 11:59pm.

Success, in this case, is the successful laundering of the stimulus money to the DNC through their donor base. I'm sure that if the GOP would hire competent investigators, perhaps next Congress, the source of the DNC money for the 2012 cycle will be uncovered, and its genesis will be found in the TARP's and Obamacare.

Yea, well

Submitted by coin of the realm on Thu, 10/27/2011 - 2:44am.

that is all well and good speculation about things that may serve to ease your mind with unsubstantiated and ridiculous rumors and obviate the need to actually examine available data. Data that would most likely disrupt your comfortable and simplistic worldview.

But since that ain't gonna happen
I guess it is pointless to mention that TARP was a Bush program created by Hank Paulson and run by Goldman Sachs people and that Obamacare was architected by the insurance companies.

One personal attack after another and never any substantive reply or questions.

I guess it is something for me to consider, the possibility that I know nothing at all and you guys know everything and so don't even feel the need to demonstrate your universal understanding. After all, calling me a troll, impugning my education and intellect are more than sufficient proof of knowledge.

It is like that blowhard Limbaugh, a real leader of the party, who has a high school education, multiple failed marriages and is an addict. He knows so very little and talks so very much that I think he may actually believe what he says is truth simply bc he says so.

Submitted by killa37 on Thu, 10/27/2011 - 3:02pm.

'He knows so very little, and talks so very much, that I think he may actually believe what he says is truth, simply because he says so'............I gotta hand it to you, out of this realm - you've given a perfect description of Boy BlahBlah. That's TWICE in the past 24 hours that you've swerved into the truth - the other time was that list you made about Boy Barry on another thread. What kind of mental massacre and intellectual obliteration do you think would happen if Rush Limbaugh and Barry Soetoro Barack Hussein Obama sat down opposite each other for a debate - with NO teleprompter or notes or earpieces or prompts???

And ol' El Rushbo seems to have done pretty well for just having a high school education, huh??? And he'll admit to his past quite readily. Now, as to your Boy Barry................exactly WHAT education DOES he have??? And he's stated that he was a serious drug user, as well as a smoker - he even said he 'quit' - like we believe him!!! But I won't say anything about his marraige, because that's his personal business. I will say - better him than me!!!

I do think the 'stimulus' actually did have some positive effect - as in 'stimulating' government jobs, union jobs, and Democrat Party slush funds. My youngest brother lives in northern Virginia, and a lot of the semi-rural area has become large, pricey homes and properties in the past 3 years, due to the increased amount and increased salaries of government employees, lawyers, and others associated with the REGIME.

I'll buy into the idea of 'jobs saved' about as much as I'll buy into ALGORE's theories on 'global warming'................
