MSNBC's Bashir Tag-teams with Rep. Keith Ellison to Bash GOP: They'll Cause Kids to Shiver with Heating Oil Cuts

By Ken Shepherd | October 04, 2011 | 17:30

"Grab a blanket, kids. Congress wants to cut your home-heating benefits," MSNBC's Martin Bashir teased viewers of his October 4 program as he went out to a commercial break with Dean Martin's "Baby It's Cold Outside" playing in the background.

Upon his return from break, Bashir tag-teamed with Congressional Progressive Caucus co-chair Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) to bash Republicans are heartless bastards who want children to shiver through the coming winter (video follows page break; emphasis mine):

BASHIR: ...Republicans have put together a budget proposal of their own, trimming what they believe is fat: Funding for national public broadcasting, education grants, and some heating subsidies, just in time for winter.

To discuss this political standoff, we're joined now by Congressman Keith Ellison, a Democrat from Minnesota. Good afternoon, sir.

ELLISON: Thank you, Martin, thank you for having me.

BASHIR: Fourteen million Americans are out of work, the president has put forward a plan to create jobs, and what do Republicans offer but to cut heating subsidies and stop funding NPR. Can you explain this, 'cause I don't understand it.

ELLISON: It's just callousness, but it's also the idea, the philosophical belief that the rich don't have enough and the poor have too much, and they believe that if they exacerbate that gap more, that somehow magically things will trickle down. But of course they never do, never have.

BASHIR: So you're saying that Republicans want to increase the disparity of wealth rather than decrease it. That's their intention?

ELLISON:  Well, whether it's their intention or not, it's the effect of their policy...

[...]

BASHIR: It's pretty shameless, isn't it, to go after heating subsidies as fall progresses and we move towards winter?

ELLISON: It is, it is morally reprehensible. It is callous, it is cold-blooded, and it's actually pretty scary, because, uh, you know, the fact is that we have seniors, particularly in states like mine, who are really facing real serious problems...

Bashir also groused that Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) "wants to triple funding to the Defense of Marriage Act to $1.5 million despite the fact that in February, the president told the Justice Department to stop defending the Act."

"I just don't understand how they can find one-and-a-half million dollars for something that is pointless given the president's stance," Bashir complained to Ellison, perhaps ignorant that it was precisely President Obama's directive to the Justice Department that makes it necessary for Congress to hire its own counsel to defend challenges against DOMA in the courts.

More expensive energy

Submitted by JeffC... on Tue, 10/04/2011 - 6:04pm.

I guess these leftists dolts don't believe in supply and demand.

Ban oil pumping in the gulf, fracking for natural gas, shut down coal-fired power plants, and throw all that money into inefficient solar/buddy-enriching projects and energy prices go up. Get rid of the bans and energy prices will come down, lessening the need for subsidies.

Show when progressive policies have ever raised the standard of living for the poor in this country. They're designed specifically not to. They're designed merely to weaken the rich; take all of their money and distribute it to the poor and you wouldn't raise the poverty level by $3000.

Submitted by Reaver on Tue, 10/04/2011 - 7:34pm.

Better yet, show me the Democrats' budget counter proposal to the Republicans' budget. Isn't it convenient that Ellison can go on MSNBC and demagogue and criticize the republican budget confident that Bashir won't ask him where is the democrat's budget? Go ahead Dems, write a budget, put down on paper how you're going to increase spending on home heating subsidies and public broadcasting and explode the national debt. Guess that would of been a random act of journalism.

only ones that may freeze are the families who have ALWAYS been dependent on freebies.

Pay no heed, Kids.

Submitted by CobraMan on Tue, 10/04/2011 - 7:25pm.

"Grab a blanket, kids. Congress wants to cut your home-heating benefits"

Pay no heed, kids. because most states, like mine, have laws that prevent utility companies from shutting off services during winter. So, even if your parents don't pay any heating bills this winter, you'll stay warm and toasty.

state laws vs EPA

Submitted by jon_torlin on Tue, 10/04/2011 - 7:56pm.

It's true what you say about the state laws, but what about the EPA forcing some of those companies to shut down come January?  They did it once before back in February.  People died.

What makes you think they won't do it again, but on a larger scale, and to hell with the state laws? (which is why the Republican governors need to station National Guard troops at these companies and fire on the EPA should they attempt to do anything.  Dem governors will just comply willingly)

Let's not forget that electricity and water also can not be shut off during those months due to lack of payment. Let us also not forget that the State, as well as the counties, have their own assistance programs, just as they have had for decades. It's not surprising that people like Ellison won't mention these inconvenient facts.

"Grab a blanket, kids."

Submitted by USMC8411 on Wed, 10/05/2011 - 12:06am.

How insensitive. Kids cannot "grab blankets" until the government provides them or subsidizes them!

Bashir should start the "No kid left without a blanket" campaign. Schools can hand them out! After all, we already provide breakfast and lunch programs because a child cannot learn if it is hungry. We provide condoms and day care for "condom failures" because no child can learn when being forced to care for a child! How the hell can a chilly child pay attention?

While we are at it, why doesn't Ellison declare heating a civil right and ban any evil corporate oil or gas company the ability to charge for providing this civil right? Heating should be provided by the government for free! Bashir should demand that the oil and gas companies "decrease the disparity of their wealth" for the blanket-less children, right?

Bashir should be celebrating

Submitted by eaglewingz08 on Wed, 10/05/2011 - 12:16pm.

Bashir should be celebrating republican energy policies that are causing global warming since there won't be freezing winters and thus the need for these subsidies under republican policies. In fact the liberal policies that lessen global warming (ha ha) will lead to more deaths by cold and thus Bashir should be bashing his democrap fellow travelers for their inhuman actions to kids.

Alternative Energy via Government

Submitted by CobraMan on Wed, 10/05/2011 - 1:05pm.

A suggestion to the parents of freezing children this winter: Get a copy of the multi-volume set of the US Tax Code and burn it in the furnace. That'll keep you warm for weeks! Need a few extra weeks of fuel? Get a copy of ObamaCare. Still not enough? Get a copy of every bill that Reid has "tabled" in the Senate this year alone and you'll have enough fuel to last the rest of the winter!

These Lib politician twits who are still sucking their thumbs (and suckling from the public teat) while clutching their politically-correct "binkies" for political cover are a pathetic, patronizing, condescending bunch of imperial overlords.

They forgot to include heart-wrenching stories of the countless (as in, there are none to count!) homeless, wheelchair-bound grandmas, shivering in the cold under the freeway overpass as they use their arthritic fingers to scoop some canned dog food past their toothless gums and hoarsely whisper, "Obama-wan, come save us, you're our only hope!"

"Ye canne change the laws of physics....." but some politicians believe that with the right legislation you can pretend they don't really apply to your own pet projects...
