Yahoo! Sports Blogger Tags Natl. Organization for Marriage As 'Anti-Gay' Group
Updated with video of Tyree interview (see below page break)
Former pro football player David Tyree has dared come out publicly with his view that New York State should not grant same-sex marriage licenses.
For that view, disclosed in an interview with the "anti-gay group" the National Organization for Marriage, Tyree's "put his foot in his mouth" according to Yahoo! Sports blogger Doug Farrar (emphasis mine):
People play in the NFL together despite their immense differences — it happens all the time. So it is for two key members of the 2007 New York Giants team that upended the New England Patriots' run to a perfect season with a 17-14 victory over the heavily favored Pats in Super Bowl XLII.
Receiver David Tyree, who made a key catch in the air against New England safety Rodney Harrison, recently made some controversial comments on the subject of same-sex marriage. Tyree, who made one Pro Bowl in 2005 primarily for his special teams work, caught a total of 54 passes for 650 yards and four touchdowns in his six-year NFL career, but he's still an interesting voice because of that one heroic Super Bowl catch.
And with that voice, Tyree managed to put his foot in his mouth in the minds of many people, saying that two people of the same gender could not make a commitment to each other that involved the raising of children.
Asked in a recent interview with an anti-gay group called the National Organization for Marriage about a same-sex marriage bill that recently passed the New York state assembly and awaits approval from state senators, Tyree said that "this will be the beginning of our country's sliding towards, you know, it's a strong word, but 'anarchy.' The moment we have it, if you trace back even to other cultures, other countries, that will be the moment where our society and itself, loses its grip with what's right. Marriage is one of those things that is the backbone of society.
Farrar contrasted Tyree with former teammate Michael Strahan, who has cut a commercial in favor of same-sex marriage. (embedded below)
The Yahoo! "Shutdown Corner" blogger then awkwardly praised Strahan with what I suppose is a veiled swipe at the vast majority of apolitical pro football players (emphasis mine):
"All the publicity that it's gotten, between the NBA and everything else, definitely has opened up the topic again," Strahan recently told the New York Times. "The topic has always been there. It seems like this is a great time to talk about it, a great time to open up dialogue and give people more of an understanding about all the issues that are going on around it.
"I have plenty of gay friends, and I don't judge them. I want them to have all the same rights I have, and all the opportunities I have to be in a relationship, a great relationship, with the person that they're in love with."
Some former players may have a natural gap of understanding when it comes to things outside of the traditional "macho" viewpoint, but Strahan has learned a few things in his time as a football expert with FOX Sports.
"Heck, I work for FOX, man," Strahan told the Times. "They've got 'Glee' on TV."

I can't stand the media who cover them. It's the same old liberal diatribe: owners are too rich, players make too much money, coaches make too much money, the system is unfair, gays are afraid to come out because somebody's gonna snap a towel on their ass -- on and on it goes. The only difference between these reporters and the ones who cover politics is the pregame buffet.
In a country where we have freedom of speech -- you really should go all the way with that, Canada -- anybody who points to strawmen to deem certain speech "controversial" is nothing but a fascist.
So there are no conservatives

So there are no conservatives out there who think the players get paid too much and the owners have too much money?
Conversely, there aren't any liberals who think what athletes make is justified, coaches too?
And I'm not sure it's having someone "snap a towel on their ass" that gay athletes are worried about...
Answer: NO, Idiot.

What do you mean by "too much", kemosabe? Do you mean "the government shouldn't allow them to have it because I'm jealous someone else makes $$$"? In that case, no. You will never find a conservative who favors government making someone poorer to make the conservative happier. To suggest such a thing shows how little of a grasp you have on what makes conservatives tick.
Here's a clue for you and all the rest of the feral children: CONSERVATIVES ARE NOT ENVIOUS. It doesn't bug us when someone makes more than us. Am I clear?
As for liberals, it is possible, but to even hold such a position means some kind of attachment to the real world, some love of economic freedom, and some lack of personal affront by the situation.

Re: "paid too much", I was quoting the previous poster, or did you miss that little factoid?
As for my original point, I'm a democrat and in general I don't think they're overpaid. Carlos Beltrand? I could argue that and other cases. I'd bet that there are conservatives who think the opposite.
Forgot something, didn't you?

Tyree has no flippin' clue what anarchy means.
How does a government law translate to absence of government?
