Annapolis Capital Editor Tries to Apologize for 'Mama and Mommy' Article, Coworkers Scuttle Column
Poynter Institute's Jim Romenesko wrote yesterday about how the editor of the Annapolis Capital sought to apologize to readers for a gauzy article about a lesbian couple that ran on Mother's Day.
Only his colleagues in the newsroom pressured him not to publish it, at least not in his original draft form:
Capital editor and publisher Tom Marquardt addressed the controversy in a column — running the story on Mother’s Day was a mistake, he said — but his piece was spiked after some staffers objected.
Here are a few passages from the draft that Marquardt circulated in the newsroom:
There is an old saying in journalism that, adjusted for modern times, goes something like this: Architects cover up their mistakes with vines, attorneys send theirs to jail, businesses write them off, and doctors put them 6 feet under. But a newspaper publishes its mistakes for all to see. And that we did on May 8 with a Mother’s Day story on a lesbian couple raising two baby boys born to them through artificial insemination. The reaction among our readers was swift and damning.
In previous years we have written about single moms, poor moms, foster moms and handicapped moms — as well as the traditional moms with big families and heavy workloads. This year was different but difference is not what our readers wanted on a day when dad and kids shower love on the family matriarch.
Unfortunately for us, we lost sight of what the readers want to read: feel good stories about people who reflect their values. Newspapers need to mirror its readers — all of them perhaps, but inclusion not at the exception of the majority.
[...]
Marquardt tells me in an email: “It would be wrong to assume that the column would have run without editing and adjustment — I gave it to the key players seeking feedback, correction and suggestions. I am meeting with the staff in a few minutes and out of that conversation may come reason to write about the subject in a different way. But that particular column will not run.” He also says he wants to make it clear “that my objection is not the story, but the story running on Mother’s Day.”
UPDATE: Marquardt emails: “We had a good, open meeting. The staff suggested I write a column about our internal struggle and I may do that.”

Articles such as this one are just what the homosexual community needs to solidify their resolve to shove their dysfunctional lifestyle in your face.

We had a huge story here

Huge story here about two dads and their 12 foster and adopted kids--all the letters were favorable...this is ARIZONA, don't forget. The fam was also on the Today Show, I heard. Unless there is a mistake in fact, a paper should not retract or apologize. I found THAT offensive. I think of Annapolis as upscale and informed, not provincial and narrow. Wrong, I guess.
Their Job

The Jobe of a newspaper is to report the news, not to push an agenda. The story on the lesbian couples may or may not have been written in good faith, but it still pushed an agenda. Alternative lifestyles should NEVER be mainstreamed.
Bravo to the 2 men taking care of 12 kids. That is commendable; but pointing out that they were gay should have been omitted.
I really hate how if you don't agree with a Liberals point of view, then there is something wrong with you. Perhaps Annapolis citizens frown upon homosexuality. Good for them!
If they frown on homosexuality...

Then don't read the story...it isn't up to the newspaper to figure out what people want to read--or most people--and present only that. I gather you agree with those people in Annapolis who don't want to learn how others live...then agree away...but some people might be interested. I am not a liberal or gay--I am interested in all sorts of things. Why shouldn't I be? You sure don't like it when pro-Obama stories are the only fare in a paper. Also--trying to label someone who is different from you or makes you uncomfortable as fat, as another poster did? How original! As for the two men, the Hams (they have the same last name now), being a solid gay couple is their identity, gives them the strength to take in and love those kids, many of whom have handicaps. Their idea is to not break up families--oh, there is more than one sibling, OK, send them over.

My local paper had on the front page an article defaming the Catholic Church, and an article about the toilets at our local minor league ball stadium. Complete with a very large picture of those toilets.
No wonder people aren't buying newspapers any more.

...because that is what I lost when I clicked on this article and saw that hideous pic. :-O
At least the unfortunate children involved here are males, and if allowed to remain so, might actually have a stab at a semblance of a normal life once they have fled the nest.
Maybe.

And, after seeing the picture, I'm wondering how much those boys might weigh in twelve years.
The smallest groups are the biggest noisemakers
Submitted by falcon on Sat, 05/21/2011 - 10:32am.
Have you ever noticed that it's the minority that makes the loudest noises? Homosexuals demanding equal treatment, for example, and not only equal treatment but "preferential" treatment. And our lapdog lamestream media gives it to them.
Because it's so "progressive," dontchaknow.
Here's my advice to minority groups making noise about wanting better treatment than the majority - STFU! You want to be treated like a member of the "majority?" How 'bout not trying to shove your alternative lifestyle crap down our throats and make it seem "normal?" How 'bout learning English? How 'bout coming into this country legally? How 'bout learning the Constitution and the laws of this land? How 'bout not making yourself seem like something you're not (I'm talking to all the TG people out there)?
Our resident liberal trolls will probably flame me for this, but THIS IS MY OPINION, and just because I don't agree with yours doesn't mean I'm wrong.
In fact, I'd be disappointed if I wasn't flamed for this.
