WaPo Buries Opposition to Tuition Bill; Baltimore Sun Paints GOP Critic As Trying to Deny 'Rights' to Illegal Immigrants

By Ken Shepherd | May 11, 2011 | 11:24

Yesterday liberal Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley (D) signed into law a measure allowing illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition rates at public colleges and universities.

Covering the story today, the Washington Post offered this bland print edition headline on page B1: "O'Malley signs bill allowing immigrant tuition breaks."

The move "bucks trend in other states" and a "showdown with opponents is expected," subsequent subheadings trumpeted.

Yet staff writer Ann Marimow waited until paragraph 16 in her 23-paragraph article to get around to quoting one such opponent:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Del. Pat McDonough (R-Baltimore County), one of the lawmakers leading the opposition, said the petition effort is “ahead of schedule” and that he has been overwhelmed by the level of “passion and rage” from residents against the measure.

Opponents say they object to the state subsidizing the cost of education for illegal immigrants. In-state students, for instance, pay $8,400 in annual tuition at the University of Maryland compared to the $24,800 paid by out-of-state students.

McDonough acknowledged the challenge, however, of collecting tens of thousands of valid signatures in such a short period. Maryland’s law makes it difficult to qualify for the ballot. The last law petitioned to statewide referendum was a 1992 measure loosening restrictions on abortions.

“Will we hit the mark? I don’t know,” McDonough said. “The enthusiasm is there.”

For her part, Annie Linskey of the equally liberal Baltimore Sun painted McDonough as working feverishly to stand in the way of illegal immigrants' dreams of a higher education (emphasis mine):

Dustin, who did not want to give his last name because he is not in the country legally, watched Tuesday's ceremony and posed for one of the five official photos of the bill-signing.

He said he came to Maryland from Mexico City three years ago in search of a better life, leaving his parents and family behind. Once here, Dustin said, he secured a job at a Mexican restaurant and began attending high school.

"I wanted to improve myself," he said. Dustin said he'll graduate from high school this year with a 3.8 grade point average and would like to enroll in college this fall — paying the in-state rate.

Opponents, however, are working hard to prevent that from happening.

Del. Patrick L. McDonough, who frequently fights efforts to extend rights to illegal immigrants, called a news conference at his Essex office to denounce O'Malley's decision to sign the bill.

"He can take that pen and stick it in the back of taxpayers," McDonough said in an interview. He says the bill violates federal immigration statutes and the state can't afford the program. Fiscal analysts estimate it will drain $3.5 million by 2016, though McDonough and other critics say that number is too low.

McDonough said he spent most the day fielding over 100 phone calls from Marylanders who want to help the effort to put the law on the 2012 ballot. The Baltimore County Republican said the group is "on track" to come up with the 18,500 signatures needed for an initial deadline at the end of the month.

The bill is scheduled to take effect July 1. But if the petition drive is successful, the measure would be put on hold until the November election.

"Rights' are not the issue, its entitlements

Submitted by Rover on Wed, 05/11/2011 - 12:25pm.

Again, the MSM spins the issue by using deceptive language.

This bill is not extending "rights" here, it's extending an entitlement, which means heaping the cost of these illegal immigrants' college education on the backs of the citizen-taxpayers of Maryland. In addition to taxpayers AGAIN being forced to pay for someone else's candy, bills like this encourage MORE illegal immigration. Does anyone believe that no other teenagers who are still in Mexico City are paying attention to this? Now they know where they can go to get a college education. This just opens up the flood gates.

The young man mentioned here, working in illegally a Mexican resturant, is almost certainly not paying taxes into the system that this bill is funded from. Why should he get benefits?

And there's no particular reason to believe he's going to become a citizen, and thereby contribute meaningfully to the state's and the nation's economy, so why should his education be subsidized?

Every time the liberals put up some pathetic creature needing help in order to achieve his dream, and they try to take the moral high ground and insist on some entitlement, my answer is the same: his plight IS very sad, but when did it become MY responsibility to pay for this guy?

But the Dems see the immigrant influx in terms of millions of future voters for Democrates. They WANT them to keep flooding in.

The Word Illegal

Submitted by Airforce_5_O on Wed, 05/11/2011 - 12:04pm.

According the dictionary is: ": not according to or authorized by law." What part of this word or definition do liberals not understand? Here lets dumd it down for all our liberal friends:
If you have entered this country "illegally" meaning unlawfully, you have broken the law. If you break the law there is a penalty associated with the crime or unlawful act. This usually means a fine, jail time, and under imigation laws, you are deported. You do not get a break on tuition, or free health care, or food stamp!
Even my 9 year old gets the concept.

Airforce, your 9 year old can

Submitted by MikeB on Wed, 05/11/2011 - 12:13pm.

Airforce, your 9 year old can get the concept because your kid is smarter than Maryland's lib governor. It had to take years and years of intense practice to get that stupid. Perhaps the Gov should be America's entry in this year's "Twit of the Year" contest.

illegal alien from Mexico City is that the Maryland libtard Governor has a better chance of getting the illegal's vote. That plus the fact that your 9 year old understands what the word "illegal" means. Neither the guy from Mexico City OR the libtard Md Governor understand the meaning of such a relatively simple word. Maryland residents richly deserve all the financial problems their state has if they keep electing fools like O'Malley.

I don't know about Maryland,

Submitted by MikeB on Wed, 05/11/2011 - 12:07pm.

I don't know about Maryland, but a lot of states have Initiative and Referendum processes. If this sort of male-bovine sourced natural organic fertilizer were to happen in Oklahoma, the Initiative process would start, and the Governor would be reversed by the people in the next election. In fact, the governor who signed such a crap sandwich into law would be defeated at the next election, if not recalled ... I'm not sure about the recall process here.

Maybe BK can help us but I heard that the governor got all kinds of tax increases passed to pay for this,. He was on Morning Smoe awhile back bragging about how he had "saved" education in MD.

Dustin from Mexico City?

Submitted by bkeyser on Wed, 05/11/2011 - 12:10pm.

Maybe Dustin ought to take his taxpayer-funded high school diploma and his law-breaking butt back to Mexico City and apply for a work visa. By the way, I'm guessing they have Mexican restaurants there too, so he should be well positioned for gainful employment in his country of origin.

My cat.....

Submitted by Spoker on Wed, 05/11/2011 - 12:32pm.

My cat told me this morning he wants to attend dog obedience school. He is tired of being prejudiced against and denied the opportunity to get a good education. As of a couple of weeks ago we were told we need to extend 'rights' to the trees. People with no constitutional standing or rights are now being freely granted some of the rights of a citizen. It is the cats opinion that he is higher on the intelligence scale that the average tree. Therefore he should be afforded special rights as well. He wants an education. And on top of that he was actually legally born in the US, has lived here is entire life, earns his living as a great mouser, pays back society by being very affectionate and a great companion. Plus, by birth he meets the constitutional requirement for automatic rights and citizenship.

As best as I can tell he has a pretty good case.

illegal

Submitted by ohio granny on Wed, 05/11/2011 - 3:38pm.

What is it about illegal DemocRATS don't understand. Are they really too stupid to know it means breaking the law? I guess by their definition I can decide which laws I don't want to obey and nothing can be done about it. Maybe if we all decide to stop paying federal taxes the democRATS will offer us amnesty. Don't hold your breath.

I think the speed limit on interstates should be at least 80 mph, so from now on, I will go 80. I can just tell the judge when I go to court, I don't like the 65 mph, so I am no longer going to abide by it. Guess how long I will get to keep my drivers license? Not long enough to walk out of court I am sure.

Anarchy is what happens when lawlessness breaks out all over. Are we really ready for that. That is a question we need to ask every amnesty supporter.

Furthermore, our own citizens relinquish rights when they break our laws.
