Time's Amy Sullivan: Rev. Wallace Charles Smith Is No Jeremiah Wright
The pastor who preached the Easter sermon that Barack Obama heard this past Sunday is not another Jeremiah Wright, Time's Amy Sullivan insists in an April 29 blog "Swampland" blog post entitled "Conservatives Go After Another Obama Pastor."
Sullivan was responding to the complaints of conservative talkers Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, who highlighted some controversial remarks Smith made to a college audience last year:
What got these two conservative media giants atwitter was a speech Smith gave last year at Eastern University in Pennsylvania–the school where evangelical pastor and speaker Tony Campolo is based. He was asked to speak about racism and offered some thoughts that included the assertion that racism still exists in the United States. There were two important details about the speech: 1) It was taped; and 2) Smith singled out Fox News and Limbaugh by name.
“It may not be Jim Crow anymore,” Smith said in the speech. “Now, Jim Crow wears blue pinstripes, goes to law school and carries fancy briefs in cases….[H]e doesn’t have to wear white robes anymore because now he can wear the protective cover of talk radio or can get a regular news program on Fox.” Of Limbaugh, Smith said that the conservative radio host can get away with making “statements that were once the purview of Robert Shelton and members of the Ku Klux Klan and the White Citizen’s Council.”
Harsh? Yes. Hyperbolic? Possibly. The same as Jeremiah Wright’s most controversial statements? No.
Well, yes and no. Wright said, in effect, that America had 9/11 coming for all its past transgressions. Smith is only attacking conservatives, not the country as a whole.
Still, Smith's smears tar a whole broad swath of everyday people - conservative talk show listeners -- as racist and as such deserves condemnation or at least denunciation by any responsible politician asked about them.
Perhaps, and I think it's quite likely, President Obama was unaware of Smith's controversial speech. Even so, if it were Bush or McCain or Palin attending a service preached by a controversial conservative minister, it's highly unlikely the media would not consider the matter worthy of media scrutiny.

It ain't up to them, and I'm sick of my political principles being painted as racist just because these idiots can't win an election without scaring the minority population and lying to them, openly, bald faced lying... but boy,.. better watch those Obama jokes... they might get you a visit by the Secret Service if an idiot democrat doesn't like it.

From what I've seen and read of Wallace Charles Smith...

...he doesn't preach ethnocentric liberation theology, as Wright does.
Is he liberal? Obviously. Misguided in certain areas? No doubt.
But heretical? No, there's no evidence (at least none I've encountered) that would lead someone to that conclusion.

Both of These Rev.s Are Right
Submitted by JamPony on Fri, 04/29/2011 - 8:01pm.
Why does the Right take such a puritan view of America whenever they see fit?
The irony is America is pure, but there are EVIL Americans. In this case the Dems are EVIL Americans who want to destroy the country and blah, blah, blah.
But overall America is pure even though we invade other countries and kill innocent people over weapons that don't exist or we can't find (just as bad).
America isn't pure and innocent and EVERYONE in the world knows that except the STUPID Republicans.
There are plenty of other stops on the road in between Afghanistan and America and they decided to come all the way over here to do their dirt. Then STUPID Republicans ask: Why us? Um, because of your imperialistic ways. Duh!
Is that all?
Submitted by Tenebrous on Fri, 04/29/2011 - 8:57pm.
Who is this "we", kemosabe? Are you admitting that you invaded another country? That's quite a feat. Tell me, how did you do it? Are you admitting that you killed innocent people?
Your guilt stems from your sense of collective guilt, which conservatives do not share, because collective guilt is a lie.

What would it mean for
Submitted by redfish on Fri, 04/29/2011 - 10:15pm.
What would it mean for America to be pure?
The American government in the last 100 years has supported pragmatism over principle in foreign policy and interfered in the politics a lot of foreign countries, which I disagree with, and I'd agree with you has had some very negative consequences, but everyone who has been honest knows what the motives behind that were.
The US has never had a problem with free, democratic countries controlling their own source of oil. The motive was not "imperialism". The problem was always dictators who would use the oil to keep themselves entrenched in power and sell it to countries who had declared themselves our enemies, ready to use force against us (USSR).
The problem with US foreign policy is not that we are imperialists, its that we've enabled dictators around the world to turn our actions around against us as propaganda.
I can tell you straight away the Iranian government doesn't really care that we toppled Saddam Hussein, a dictator who we helped fight them in the Iran-Iraq war. In fact, they're glad that we did, since now they have an opportunity to extend their influence over the country by taking advantage of a weak Iraqi government.
That doesn't stop them from crowing about it, though, and that's what everyone else hears. It's useful propaganda for them to increase their power in the region, and foment the Iranian public against the United States so they can take criticism off themselves.
Nor does anyone in Iran really care what happened in the 1950s when the US helped lead a coup there. At the time, conservative Muslims stood behind the Shah and opposed Mosaddegh -- the man who the US helped overthrow -- because they feared he would enable a communist takeover. They only turned around and opposed the Shah later when he began his Westernization efforts and did things such as extending womens' rights.
Yet saying the US aiding the Shah is the cause of their opposition once again creates a useful, tidy narrative for their propaganda.
If you want to see the source of claims that the US is an imperialist country, read some old speeches by Communist dictators, start with Lenin and go to Kruschev. It's not new. The same propaganda has been recycled for 100 years.

Really that simple.
I again apologize for slavery that happened long before ANY of my relatives came here, I AM SORRY.
I as a hateful conservative have a simple narrative, "EVERYBODY is granted life (unless you are a fetus.....), liberty (unless you are a reporter that disagrees with Sotero) and the wonderful grand pursuit of happiness, but liberals, RESULTS MAY VARY.

I've had a few, and slavery is ALWAYS there, on the standby, to be used against any non-black for it seems any reason. Now the poster above you isn't stupid for talking about a common occurrence, but you just might be, because you missed something so obvious.

Oh, I get it.

So you take random instances and then you interject them into any debate about race. Cool.
I listened to the clip and I didn't hear anything about slavery so I guess you're just bringing your past discussions into this one.
I guess in your mind slavery should never be discussed because it was such a long time ago it has no relevance in todays society. I guess the same thing should apply to your (OUR) beloved Constitution (but we all know it doesn't) or anything else that is really old or happened a long time ago.
Race hustlers: would you consider Pat Buchanan a race hustler or do you have to be black. What about Bill O'Reilly?
The truth of the matter is no one brought race up in THIS discussion so the statement was a red-herring. What was discussed is the policies implemented by the white majority against minorities. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that the white majority tips the scale in their favor. It's almost a natural occurrence of any dichotomy - white - black, rich - poor, male - female, democrat - republican. Why does the Right pretend it doesn't exist - I don't know.

We have the sentencing guidelines for different types of drugs when all drugs should be considered and treated the same.
We have the current AZ law regarding citizenship.
AND
Then there is the law for Cubans and Haitians. Cuban reaches the beach he can stay - Haitian, not so much.
Forget about the enacted policies let's discuss the stuff that goes on in everyday life that doesn't include the benefit of being a law.
Police brutality. Women getting paid less than men (imagine how much less other minorities are paid). Voter suppression laws being enacted by different Red states...etc., etc.

These are all things you're
Submitted by redfish on Fri, 04/29/2011 - 11:24pm.
These are all things you're alleging, if you see race in all of these things that's your own fault.
Obviously, its possible to have different drug guidelines without it being about race, possible to support immigration enforcement without it being about race, etc., you just choose to see race there.
You're also focusing on allegations of voter suppression and ignoring allegations of voter fraud, to suit your point of view. You want to believe there's racism, and the idea that theres voter suppression rather than fraud fits your predisposed belief.
You're also ignoring that there have been many women CEOs and small business owners, and assuming that women who aren't paid as much are being discriminated against. You're also assuming something about how much minorities are being paid.
But going back to the original topic, I don't believe for a second that the United States has had more racism than any other country in the world. There's too much evidence from a thorough reading of history that would prove that idea wrong. There are a lot of anecdotes and textual evidence of Japanese and Chinese racism against Westerners even prior to Western commercial interference there. Japanese society continues to have heavy racist elements to this day. Slavery --- and everything that followed it --- was a tragedy, but it didn't happen because the United States was more racist than other countries.
However, despite that, the US as a country among the world has done the most to address and overcome racism, its become a core part of our politics -- and in fact thats why we hear about it so much -- because we're obsessed with it. Maybe these good ministers should focus on that instead of trying to turn the US into the bogeyman of history,

My only question
Submitted by pbthinker on Fri, 04/29/2011 - 11:35pm.
How does he feel about Black Liberation Theology? If he's a believer, then I have a feeling Obama seeks out people who think like this and feels very comfortable in their presence. Everyone talks about how he's thrown Jeremiah Wright under the bus. I doubt he's really done that, he's just distanced himself from him, for a while, and I believe it was mutual. Wright eluded, in an interview, that Barack has to do what he has to do. Sounds to me like they both know they'll get heat. I believe that Barack Obama is an adherent to Black Liberation Theology and was probably applauding when Jeremiah Wright was giving his best sermons.
