Whoopi Goldberg Rebukes Canon Law Adviser for Saying Gov. Cuomo Shouldn't Receive Communion
Those learned theologians on "The View" are at it again.
Discussing how Catholic canon law advisor Dr. Edward Peters has declared that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) committed an "objectively sacrilegious" act that "produces grave scandal" by receiving Communion on January 2, almost every panelist on ABC gabfest "The View" today rebuked the scholar for his pronouncement.
"Peters specifically cited Cuomo's cohabiting with Food Network hostess Sandra Lee as 'publicly acting in violation of a fundamental moral expectation of the Church,' and that 'as long as he persists in such conduct, he should refrain from taking Holy Communion,'" CNSNews.com's Michael Chapman noted on Monday.
[For full disclosure, CNSNews.com is owned by the parent company of NewsBusters, the Media Research Center.]
"What would Jesus do?" View moderator Whoopi Goldberg asked, answering her own question by misapplying Jesus's admonition that he who is without sin may cast the first stone.
Co-host Sherri Shepherd also echoed the "cast the first stone" argument, wondering "how many people in that church that take that wine and eat those crackers are doing something at home that we don't know about?"
Of course, every church pew is filled with sinners, but at issue in Peters's complaint is Canon 915, which states (emphasis mine):
Can. 915 Those upon whom the penalty of excommunication or interdict has been imposed or declared, and others who obstinately persist in manifest grave sin, are not to be admitted to holy communion.
Since Gov. Cuomo is a recognizable public figure who obstinately persists in a romantic and sexual relationship with a woman who is not his wife, Peters argues, Catholic clergy should not admit him to communion:
CNSNews.com asked Peters by e-mail, “Is Gov. Andrew Cuomo living in a ‘free union’ (Catechism 2390) with Sandra Lee -- in the objective order – ‘contrary to the moral law’ and does this behavior ‘always constitutes a grave sin and excludes one from sacramental communion’? (2390)”
Peters answered, “Yes. There is no dispute about this one, whatsoever. The governor, with complete freedom, is publicly acting in violation of a fundamental moral expectation of the Church. On these facts alone, his taking holy Communion is objectively sacrilegious and produces grave scandal within the faith community.”
“As long as he persists in such conduct, he should refrain from taking holy Communion in accord with Canon 916. If he approaches for holy Communion, he should be denied the august sacrament in accord with Canon 915.”

To most of us LAWS are not suggestions, especially God's Laws
But to Liberals laws are suggestions, to be followed or ignored. That's why liberals can't be hypocrites. They just make it up as they go along, forever children, Peter Pans.
If everybody does it, it's OK.
Gee Whoopi. Was the church
Gee Whoopi. Was the church wrong and out of bounds for excommunicating and denying the sacraments to the late Leander Perez. Because of his stand on intergration. After all. We're all sinners. There is Thou shall not commit murder, but I don't recall Thou shall not be a stupid bigot.
Whoopi is the guardian as to what can be said.
"You lie!" Rep. Joe Wilson R-(SC)
Perhaps Whoopie forgot the
Perhaps Whoopie forgot the second part ... go and sin no more. Church discipline is set out explicitly and perhaps Cummo should be kicked out of his church.
Idiots of the view
Catholics have the sacrament of Confession, which leaves us cleansed of sin. Confession was often scheduled on Saturday so that by Sunday Mass the parishoner would be free of sin and able to recieve Holy Communion. At a funeral recently the priest invited those Catholics who were in state of grace (free of sin) to come up for Communion. This rule applies to all Catholics, even politicians.
More importantly, unless a crime is being committed, STAY OUT OF MY CHURCH.
Why do they not do research?
Is it not simpler to just understand what the Catholic church teaches? How hard would that be? Talk to a priest? Read a website? It seems to me they want to change the Catholic teaching with votes. That is not the way the Church works and will never be the way it works.
I rebuke Whoopi.
I do so because sex with a child is absolutely "rape" rape, not matter how she tries to rationalize it away. It matters not to me what Whoopi says about anything, I disregard it because she demonstrated that when it comes right down to it, a child protecter and defender she is not. A EVIL defender she is.
There is nothing lower than those who target children intentionally, except for maybe those who try to dismiss the seriousness of such a thing.
The governor should have the
The governor should have the decency to not present himself for Communion, knowing that he is in a state of grave sin.
If he doesn't, I don't see a problem with a priest declining to give him Communion.
Sherri Sheppard is an idiot.
Yes, Sherri, people do things at home that others don't know about. A priest assumes that people who present for Communion have repented and are in a state of grace. They have no way of proving otherwise. Governor Cuomo makes his sin public knowledge, and in doing so, flouts the teaching of the Church.
If the governor insists on receiving Communion, he adds yet another serious sin: that of knowingly receiving the Sacrament in a state of grave sin.
But "sin" is such an outmoded concept these days.
Pope Whoopi
Pope Whoopi needs to learn something about something (anything?) before she opens her mouth. If ignorance is bliss, Whoppi is the happiest person on earth. Governor Cuomo, like Senator Kerry, Senator Kennedy, et al, don't just commit a sin, confess it and 'go and sin no more' (Who said that? Oh yeah, it was Jesus!) They are not contrite and they just keep on sinnin'; that's not how it works, Whoopi. (Maybe that's why she's called Whoopi, as in "Whoops"!)
Ugh!
I commented on this at another posting:

Let Whoopi start her own church if she doesn't like the rules. No one is telling Cuomo he needs to be a Catholic.
FWIW, when the Pope came to America, Rudy Giuliani quietly sat out Communion because he too is living in public grave sin.
