Time's Joe Klein Rips John McCain After DREAM Act Defeat

Update (17:23): Monkey see, monkey do: MSNBC's Chris Matthews quoted extensively from this post on today's "Hardball" in a segment entitled "Whatever Happened to John McCain?" Matthews and his guests lamented McCain's swing to the right in 2010.

Hell hath no fury like Joe Klein disillusioned.

The Time magazine writer apparently had a bit of a liberal journalist man-crush on Sen. John McCain back when the Arizona Republican was reaching across the aisle to work with Democrats for illegal-immigrant amnesty.

Now post 2008, not so much, particularly since McCain has tacked to the right on immigration and border security and stayed there even after his successful reelection to the Senate in November.

Klein unloaded both barrels on McCain in a Saturday evening Time.com Swampland blog post entitled "Two Dreams, One Dead" (emphasis mine), calling McCain every label that popped into his head from "troglodyte" to "trigger-happy gambler":

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

The Senate today passed the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," which is a good thing. It did not pass the "Dream Act," which is a cold, cold abomination. There is a relationship between the two. Repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" will allow homosexuals--who have fought honorably in every one of America's wars--to serve openly. Blocking the "Dream Act" means that young immigrants, who were brought here illegally by their parents, will not be able to gain citizenship by completing college or by serving in the military.

The repeal of "don't ask" will get most of the attention in the media--as it should, another step toward the perfection of our democracy. But let us focus for a moment on the "Dream Act," a vote of staggering cynicism and ugliness on the part of most Republicans and five morally-deficient Democrats. Two of the original sponsors, John McCain and Orrin Hatch, voted against the bill...and one wonders why, especially in McCain's case, given the fact that he recently won reelection and doesn't have to pretend to be a troglodyte anymore. McCain has professed himself all misty and honored in the past when he attended ceremonies in which green-card holders and other non-citizens achieved citizenship through military service. But, because of the anti-immigrant mania, this flagrantly cynical and cowardly politician, would deny similar status to young people who--through no fault of their own--were brought to this country as children, grew up as Americans and love the country enough to serve it. If the Dream Act were passed, we would have gained an estimated 65,000 valuable, patriotic and productive citizens--college graduates, military service-members--each year. We could use them....

McCain distinguished himself doubly this weekend, opposing the Dream Act and leading the opposition to "Don't Ask," despite the very public positions of his wife and daughter on the other side of the issue. I used to know a different John McCain, the guy who proposed comprehensive immigration reform with Ted Kennedy, the guy--a conservative, to be sure, but an honorable one--who refused to indulge in the hateful strictures of his party's extremists. His public fall has been spectacular, a consequence of politics--he "needed" to be reelected--and personal pique. He's a bitter man now, who can barely tolerate the fact that he lost to Barack Obama. But he lost for an obvious reason: his campaign proved him to be puerile and feckless, a politician who panicked when the heat was on during the financial collapse, a trigger-happy gambler who chose an incompetent for his vice president. He has made quite a show ever since of demonstrating his petulance and lack of grace.

What a guy.

It's uncanny how most of his descriptors for McCain sound a lot like how Klein takes out his grudges online.

[See our archive on Joe Klein's bias here.]

Of course, Klein's rage is a bit misplaced.

As I wrote on Saturday, it was ultimately five Democrats, not Republicans, who doomed the DREAM Act.

Oh let's see. Let the pity party begin.

"Blocking the "Dream Act" means that young immigrants, who were brought here illegally by their parents, will not be able to gain citizenship by completing college or by serving in the military." Ah, the poor brats.

This must be the new Lib theme. NBC Mike Viquiera has the BIAS award winning comment on this,"...the bill would have offered a path to citizenship to children who are brought to this country illegally through no fault of their own." Mike were these children kidnapped, placed in a burlap bag, brought here and forced to stay here by evil white Americans looking for slave labor? Or did there parents come here illegally and bring them which was also an illegal act? Geez.

Few questions for the MSM Libs:

1.  Do you know the meaning of the word immigrant? Illegal aliens are not immigrants. Squatters, yes, immigrants, no.

If the "Dream Act" passes:

2. If some of these squatters were to go to college to gain citizenship they would pay their own way, correct? The taxpayer will not be force to pay for them, correct?

3. If some of these squatters joined the military to gain citizenship, will they do it with out pay? Why should the taxpayers pay them to earn their citizenship?

4. Can you guarrantee that whether they go to college or the military they will not prevent a legal citizen from doing so by taking their place?

5. What do we do with squatters not competent to do either?

Inquiring minds want to know.

What a maroon

anti-immigrant mania

First of all, it's not "anti-immigrant".  I don't know one person, nor have I read anyone's comments, here, who is against immigration.  We're against illegal aliens!

Secondly, what is this "mania"?  Because a large majority of the CITIZENS of this country oppose illegal aliens being given amnesty, furthermore, we oppose any preferential treatment based on their illegal status, regardless of age.  Finally, get their bloody hands out of our pockets.

Klein is a pseudo-intellectual charlatan.  He can't even define his terms properly, why should anyone listen to what he has to say?

Klein-Rant

Submitted by Galvanic on Mon, 12/20/2010 - 5:57pm.

There's a major reason why McCain has turned sour on the DREAM Act and other attempts at "immigration reform:"   He represents Arizona, a state which is overrun with illegals and has passed its own law (S1070) to enforce the Federal laws that our President refuses to enforce.

For once, McCain represents his constituents.  It's a simple as that.

It ain't anti-immigrant; it's pro-law.  The US still has the most open immigration laws in the world, Klein's deliberate mixing of legal and illegal immigation notwithstanding.

How about the "five morally-deficient Democrats" as Klein calls them?  Oh, my.

Throwing a pity party for bad law

Submitted by UltraC on Mon, 12/20/2010 - 9:54pm.

One of the key provisions of the DREAM Act is unconstitutional because it gives non-citizens special rights/privileges that some citizens don't have.  If you want to go to college in California but live in Georgia, you must pay out-of-state tuition rates.  But if another person is in the country illegally, and just happens to be squatting in California, they qualify for in-state tuition rates?

First off, it's the federal government attempting to trump state laws and regulations.

Second, how can an illegal immigrant declare residency in any State?  They're not here legally.  Ergo, they're not a legal resident of any state!

Case in point:  I completed high school in a foreign country.  When my parents and I moved back to the U.S., we had not established legal residency long enough in the state we moved back to for me to qualify for in-state tuition rates.  As a U.S. citizen, I wasn't a long-term legal resident of any state.  Is it fair that a non-citizen should have rights or privileges that supercede mine?

Since liberals love to manage to the exception by justifying things as "if it helps just one child, etc, it will be worth it", I want to know what Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, are doing to handle my not-as-unique-situation-as-you-might-think.

For the record, I went to a private college and think I ended up with a better education than some of the public universities I was considering.  But then again, it's a matter of principle.

Politics is supposed to be the second oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first.  -- Ronald Wilson Reagan

It help to remember Klein means “Little” as in teeny-weeny

Submitted by needle on Mon, 12/20/2010 - 11:25pm.

Gad! After *A*R*I*Z*O*N*A* Senator McCain had a near-[political]-death experience and saved himself (with some help from Sarah Palin) by becoming a convert on the immigration issue, these super sophisticated news analyses expect McCain to vote for the DREAM act?  On what planet do these people live?!?  Oh yeah, they live in the Beltway.

I presume Joe Klein did not sign on to the recent Liberal faux dream / New Year’s resolution of “No Labels” (That would be like Michael Moore resolving to cut his weight in half.)

However, Joe calling McCain a "trigger-happy gambler" may actually have accidentally hit home: I hear that ever unreliable McCain is planning to support the START Treaty.  Sarah, you may reget this some day.

- Looking forward to the self-annihilation of the Manipulated Stories Machine.
