More California Nuttiness: L.A. County Passes Plastic Bag Ban
San Francisco and Los Angeles must be having a competition to see which California city is most committed to passing inane liberal legislation.
Given the move by Los Angeles County today to ban plastic bags and impose a paper bag tax, I'm going to have to go with L.A.
The Los Angeles Times' L.A. Now blog has the story:

Enacting one of the nation's most aggressive environmental measures, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to ban plastic grocery bags in unincorporated areas of the county.
The vote was 3-1, supported by Supervisors Gloria Molina, Mark Ridley-Thomas, and Zev Yaroslavsky, and opposed by Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich. Supervisor Don Knabe was absent.
The ban, which will cover nearly 1.1 million residents countywide, is to the point: “No store shall provide to any customer a plastic carryout bag.” An exception would be made for plastic bags that are used to hold fruit, vegetables or raw meat in order to prevent contamination with other grocery items.
Story Continues Below Ad ↓If grocers choose to offer paper bags, they must sell them for 10 cents each, according to the ordinance. The revenue will be retained by the stores to purchase the paper bags and educate customers about the law.
“Plastic bags are a pollutant. They pollute the urban landscape. They are what we call in our county urban tumbleweed,” Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky said.
Mark Gold, president of the Santa Monica environmental group Heal the Bay, said previous county efforts to promote recycling of plastic bags at grocery stores was a failure.
“You cannot recycle your way out of the plastic bag problem,” Gold said. “The cost of convenience can no longer be at the expense of the environment.”
The measure is a significant win for environmental groups, which suffered a major defeat in Sacramento at the end of August with the failure of the state Senate to pass a sweeping plastic bag ban that won the support of the state Assembly and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger amid heavy and costly lobbying by plastic bag manufacturers.
But the ban could cause confusion. The action by the Board of Supervisors only covers the unincorporated areas of L.A. County, covering some neighborhoods like Altadena, Valencia and Rowland Heights, but doesn't cover 88 cities in L.A. County. City councils could adopt a similar ordinance.
[...]
San Francisco’s ban, which passed three years ago, is less restrictive because it still permits grocers to offer bioplastic bags made from corn starch, which are imperfect because they also do not degrade in the ocean, Gold said. Bans in San Francisco and Malibu also do not add a surcharge on paper bags, Gold said, which does not give consumers an incentive to switch to reusable cloth bags.

I like plastic bags myself. I use them for all sorts of stuff including garbage. I put one in my car. I use them for a gym bag sometimes and my wife likes to call them my suitcases because I pack clothes and stuff in them while traveling.

This last election was the last nail in California's coffin. I really feel like I'm living in a lunatic asylum. We first didnt want paper bags because of the trees.....now we dont want plastic bags because of the land fill issue and are going back to paper bags with a 10 cent fee. I read a recent study that said the cloth re-usable bags are full of bacteria, and show lead content, and even washing them wont eliminate all the bacteria. Wait till an epidemic breaks out!! This state is truly INSANE!!!!
Edit: I cant stand the self rightous snooty snoots, that carry thier cloth bags and look at you like your some barbarian, as they get in their prius's with the Obama sticker on it.

California is going to be known as the most whacked out state of the union. At this point, they could be no longer part of the union and the US would be better for it.
And if anyone diasgrees, I bet you can't really say why you disagree.
I can't wait to hear what their reason for a bailout will be, there isn't any doubt they'll be asking for one before too long.
I wonder what Gov'ner Moonbeam will think about this? He'll probably praise it.

Ok, so I was being a bit polite. Of course, I said "most whacked out state" when before it just used to be just a whacked out state with other whacked out states coming in competition.
I suppose it's fair to say that other whacked out states would include Conneticut, Delaware, Nevada, New York, and a few others. California would easily go to the top of the list. Louisiana used to be on that list till they wised up after Katrina.(hint: Gov Jindal)
How do you quantify the nuttiness of these states anyway, sheesh.......

local newscasts are telling us that the reusable bags you buy in the grocery store contain lead. I presume they'll ban those next, leaving us to juggle the lettuce, oranges, steaks, etc. all the way home.
For those of you who like to bash California, take a look at this Politico map showing the vote for Governor. Most of the state is conservative red, the blue parts are the liberal strongholds that contain most of the union thugs, weirdos, and airheads. The rest of us can't help it if they outnumber us.

Well, it's not like trying to ban plastic bags and happy meal toys are the only nutty things done by California politicians (I.E.: Banning the sale of violent video games to minors, the three-strikes law, Jessica's Law, etc.) And it seems to be a unique contagion as it seems to infect Democrats and Republicans BOTH EQUALLY.
Makes you kind of wish that you didn't live in California in the first place. Oh well, at least we have Hot Dog on a Stick. That'll certainly cheer anyone up.

not to consumer preference for shopping bags. Where do these busy-bodies get off telling a grocery store they must charge 10 cents for a paper bag and must refuse to provide plastic bags unless certain criteria are met?
I carry a reusable bag as a matter of personal preference. That's my choice. Someone wants to use paper, go for it. Plastic, go for it. Glad I don't live in L.A., lest I forget the reuseable bag and get penalized for not keeping "Mother Gaia" in my thoughts 24/7.

Geeze, it wasn't that long ago when the same envronuts were telling everyone that they should stop using paper bags and switch to plastic because we needed to save all the poor trees that were being, if I remember, "clear cut" to produce those environmentally harmful paper bags. I guess they changed their minds about that, eh?
Just once, I'd like to hear an apology to us all about the now obviously false claims that we were destroying the environment for our love of paper shopping bags. Of course, the envronuts will NEVER admit that they were wrong.
