Newsweek's Advice to Christine O'Donnell: Submit to a Husband and Open a Wiccan Store

By Ken Shepherd | October 15, 2010 | 12:59

A  A
Ken Shepherd's picture

After getting spanked in the November 2 election, Christine O'Donnell needs to find herself a good Christian man to submit to. Or she could open a Wiccan supply store.

Those are just two of the six mocking suggestions that Newsweek's David Graham came up with yesterday on the magazine's The Gaggle blog for the Delaware Republican Senate nominee's future.

Graham's list is just more evidence that O'Donnell seems to have inherited Sarah Palin's mantle as the conservative female politician liberal journalists most love to write arguably misogynistic screeds against (emphasis mine):

[I]f she isn't able to come back, how might O'Donnell spend her time after Nov. 2? We've got some suggestions.

(1) Go Back to School: O'Donnell famously claimed she had gone to Oxford University, when in fact she had attended an outside institute's summer program there. Before that, she said she'd graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson long before she actually did. And she suggested that she was taking classes for a master's at Princeton, which she was not. So why not use the down time to actually pick up a few extra credentials. (Potential flaw: this could lead to more debt in the short term.)

(2) Open a Wicca Supply Store: By now, everyone agrees, she's not a witch (more contentious is whether she's you). But she's also well positioned to take advantage of the link between her name and witchcraft. It's not like Dan Aykroyd was a real bluesman before he opened the House of Blues in 1992. Why not open a store specializing in pentagrams and the like?

(3) Get Married: O'Donnell told CNN in 1998 that wives should "graciously submit" to their husbands. Recently, she said she's "currently accepting applications for a husband," and that makes some sense: if she had a benevolent, controlling man in her life, he could dictate a path for her, and she wouldn't have to deal with figuring out what's next.

(4) Become a Scientist: As Gandhi said, you have to become the change you want to see. O'Donnell told Bill O'Reilly in 2007 that "American scientific companies are cross-breeding humans and animals and coming up with mice with fully functioning human brains." What better way to clean up the R&D establishment than by entering it? It's not unlike entering government to reform it. (Caveat: this step may need to be combined with No. 1.)

(5) Return to Punditry: As many people have pointed out, O'Donnell is really a natural pundit—it's how she made her name, and she seems quite comfortable at it. Her profile is higher now, and there's a clear precedent set by Sarah Palin at Fox News. We recommend a two-anchor setup reminiscent of CNN's Parker Spitzer—O'Donnell's warmth and extroversion played well on panel shows like Bill Maher's Politically Incorrect but might be squandered if she's alone at the anchor's desk. We even have a proposal for someone to fill the Spitzer role: California's Jerry Brown, who's in a tight race to retake the governorship he held years ago. Like Spitzer, Brown is an outsize character who could be the liberal half of the duo—although unlike Spitzer, Governor Moonbeam only talks about prostitutes.

6. Ask God. After all, she says he's keeping her in the race.

There are so few places for liberals to take joy these days that they must resort to put their condescending attitude toward the one race they stand a chance of winning. I still look for them to screw that up as well. Why do liberals hate attractive women?

I think that these limp wrist liberal "men" hate attractive, vibrant, strong willed women because those were the girls in high school and college who wouldn't look twice at the pansy asses.

They will spend their entire career trying to get even for that perceived slight. Not one of these twerps would go one-on-one with any of these women in a fair contest of any kind. If they did they would soon realize that they were getting their cojones handed to them (if they even have any), and they would resort to misogynistic attacks.

They are an embarrassment to American manhood.

Haha, again you're going to accuse me of being a liar? You're going to have to point out what I've lied about kiddo.

And, no, I know what I believe, and I believe it's the governments job to protect American's from enemies both foreign and domestic. That means protecting us from the tyranny of other nations and corporate and individual tyranny as well.

And yes, I believe in "entitlement programs" as you call them because I believe if I pay taxes to the government, I'm ENTITLED to use those services should I need them.

It's also not as simple as "workers and non-workers". Is someone who paid into Social Security their entire life a lazy bum for expecting to receive Social Security when they retire? No. Is someone collecting unemployment to put food on the table and keep paying their bills a lazy bum if they paid taxes their entire life before losing their job? No. Maybe in you're twisted form of "logic" but not in reality.

That's not babying, it's providing a safety net for people. See MD we went through this thing called the Great Depression, I know you glossed over it in high school but go read up on it. People who, through no fault of their own, where forced to suffer for the mistakes of the rich.. And do you know what the Hoover administration kept telling them while they suffered through 20-25% unemployment? That they should quit whining, the free market will save them sooner or later.

Caring for people in their

Submitted by rfpzzzzz on Fri, 10/15/2010 - 8:05pm.

Caring for people in their old age was an issue long before FDR was ever born. The issue is not new. FDR promoted a solution for the 1930's. Isn't it possible to address the problem of caring for the elderly in a more efficient manner? Should we all drive Model T's today because that was a good solution to the problem of transportation in its day? Didn't it make sense to modernize the solution to the problem of transportation? What is wrong with proposing ideas to modernize the method by which modern society cares for its elderly if it could make things better for the elderly?

What is so great about sending approximately 15% of your income to the government for them to mind for you until you need it?

Would you willingly give your money to a person who manages their funds like the government does? I would not trust them to cut my lawn let alone put a roof on my house much less trust them to care for me in my old age. They are about as irresponsible as it gets when it comes to money.

Wouldn't it make some sense for you to take the money you and your employer now send to the government in the form of Soc Sec contributions and deposit it in your local bank in a CD or some other relatively safe investment? Wouldn't it be nice to take that approx. 15% of your paycheck and its accumulated earnings and leave it to someone of your choice rather than the government when you die if there is something left over?

What has the government done so well to inspire your devotion to them? Why are you so adamant against the idea of modern ideas regarding these things when you would not think of being that way in almost any other matter?

Considering

Submitted by Mestilf on Fri, 10/15/2010 - 8:31pm.

You're the only person who actually wrote something of value I'm ignoring everyone else.

Hey, I'm all for modernization man, if you've got a good idea for how to handle Social Security I'd love to hear it. Personally I don't think the program is that unstable. After 2037 it still pays out an estimated 75% of benefits until 2080ish. And there are several ways to extend that 2037 date with a few modest tax increases and benefit cuts. I might be open to raising the retirement age a year or two but if your answer is to make "personalized accounts" that are handled by the banks you can count me out. As we saw in 2008 wall street is to unstable to trust with long term retirement savings. The government wont always be there to bail them out and I don't want to see mine, or anyone else's retirement funds get wiped out because a few bankers took to much risk.

There's nothing particularly "great" about it except that I can rest assured that when I eventually retire, it will be there no matter what. Trust me there are times I totally wish I didn't get taxed at all, but I recognize that it has a long term benefit and even if I totally screw up my life, (Which I haven't just yet *crosses fingers*) that money will be there so I know I wont have to mooch off my kids.

I agree with you somewhat that the government has been wasting money the past few years, but I argue that from a different angle. I think we're wasting it on 2 Wars that haven't provided results, an extremely bloated military budget that has us handing over money by the truck load to defense contractors for stuff that we don't need and giving subsidies to the oil and gas industries that have been making record profits for longer than I've been alive. There are SOOOOOOOO many ways we could cut spending and we can due it without screwing over the American people.

Yes and no. That sounds like a grand idea but we can't trust banks to always be around. They have this pesky habit of over leveraging and collapsing within a matter of days. At least if we invest in Social Security, we may lose some theoretical gains we could earn through investments, but we can be damn sure the money will be there for us even if the banks we put our money into aren't.

The funny thing is, I'm really not that "pro-government". I'm just as critical of it as you guys are. I just think the government has a role it should play in our lives to provide a safety net so that, even if we screw up or the market crashes around us we wont be left starving in the street. Believe me, I'm not for expanding government, I'm for making sure that we have a smart government that works FOR US and not the bankers, military industrial complex, or the oil and gas industry. Which sadly, is what our government is all about these days.

  I certainly am open to

Submitted by rfpzzzzz on Fri, 10/15/2010 - 10:03pm.

I certainly am open to cutting some military expenditures as part of an overall audit of efficiencies in all of government spending.

I only mentioned banks and CDs because they are federally insured by the government and you can see what your rate of return would be. To be honest, we would have to calculate an interest rate for your social security deposits to have a way to compare different ideas. You actually could leave the money in US Bonds which also would have a stated interest rate and your name on the account.

My point is that whatever you choose to do with the 15% of your earnings, I think your name should be on the account and if you still have some left when you die you should be able to leave the balance to your kids or whoever.

This is not academic to me. I had to care for 2 elderly parents with all that that entails. I put a lot of toil into making sure they were cared for in their old age. I saw what happened to their savings that went into social security and what they put into private savings. Over the course of a long life the balance of what went into private savings was passed on to their heirs while the social security balance went to the government. They earned all the money but they had control over the personal account only in the end. Fortunately for them because of family they were able to stay in their home so costly institutionalization was avoided.

If you choose to leave your funds in social security as it is, I don't have a problem with that but I think if someone would prefer to put their money in US Bonds or maybe some similar types of investments in their own name they should also have that choice. The right to determine a beneficiary for your money that you set aside for old age also seems to be reasonable, after all you earned that money and it is yours.

I do agree about the need for smart government and the corruption that exists between those in government and various individuals and companies. That is why I prefer more control of my own life for better or worse because I just don't trust people maybe outside of some family and a few friends that tell me they want to help me. I think a lot of the people in government are enriching themselves while telling us how much they are doing for us. They all seem to end up doing a lot better than most of us these days.

I don't claim to have all the definitive answers but if we don't talk about different ideas and try some test projects here and there we will end up in the ash heap of history. We just cannot afford to keep loading up debt and devaluing the currency. The politicians are happy to keep us fighting so they can take turns being in charge of the stealing. I prefer the citizens to have more of a say than it seems like we have had for quite a while.

You mention the wasted money on our endless wars and I would have preferrred to go out and severely, even savagely, punish those who were responsible as well as those who gave comfort to those who attacked us and come home as quick as possible. Efficiency here would probably have caused a lot of potentional attackers to think twice.

You point to oil interests as corruption but I think the trial lawyers and government workers unions have been pretty corrupt as well. I would be very harsh on corruption if it were up to me. We could take up a whole discussion on this alone.

Why not give advice to obama instead?

Submitted by ThisnThat on Fri, 10/15/2010 - 1:42pm.

Newsweak needs to give advice to obama after November's elections, not O'Donnel.

BTW, why are obama and bidden both in Delaware today supporting a guy who's 20 points ahead in the polls?

Why aren't they, instead, in Nevada? Or Wisconsin? Or California? Maybe Alaska?

Maybe it's because Delaware is the only place that feels safe from obama's endorsement? Or -- just maybe -- obama really wants O'Donnel to win so that he has a totally Republican congress to blame the next 2 years? Just wondering.

Submitted by Boudin on Fri, 10/15/2010 - 4:47pm.

But the absolute disgusting, degrading comments, and sneers the media has thrown at this woman, shocks me none the less.

I like her, I like Angle and quite a few others. Where have we gone as a people when this kind of mud slinging is not only tolerated, it's the norm?

Bless these woman for not only tolerating this tripe, but for standing up to it and prevailing. No matter what happens in this election, O'Donnell will always have my respect!

Angle actually stomped Reid

Submitted by rfpzzzzz on Fri, 10/15/2010 - 5:04pm.

Angle actually stomped Reid in their debate and O'Donnell would definitey sign on to more fiscally prudent legislation than her smarmy Yale opponent. An O'Donnell vote is actually a very simple calculation if you look at what Coons will do in conjuction with Obama's agenda. All the stuff they throw at her is irrelevant to what would be best for the country.

Pelosi never gets mentioned

Submitted by rfpzzzzz on Fri, 10/15/2010 - 4:58pm.

Pelosi never gets mentioned as the queen of political mad women by these metro men. O'Donnell could recite more sensible ideas in a coma than Obama has given us for the last couple of years.

Man, these liberal shtbags

Submitted by Thoreau on Fri, 10/15/2010 - 5:06pm.

Man, these liberal shtbags have all the talk shows lined up against O'Donnell.  And not a peep about her card carrying Communist Democratic opponent.

It's truly impressive how insanely corrupt these aholes in California are.

I tell you what guys.  When the revolution comes, what do you say we take out California Illinois, and DC first.  Normally those states/districts would be bankrupt already and dying- but they keep stealing our money to survive.

That would take care of 80% of the unrepentent sociopaths in America.  Just waitin for that bell to ring baby.  Ring it November 2.

About that coming revolution, Thoreau...

Submitted by Jer on Fri, 10/15/2010 - 8:20pm.

Just curious...when will you commence marching through Georgia and taking it out.?  Because I plan on hiding out in Dave's basement eating grilled rib eyes.

Also, please clarify...does the revolution start Nov 2, win or lose?

Thanks,

Jer

Don't know about the wicca

Submitted by jimspice on Fri, 10/15/2010 - 10:20pm.

Don't know about the wicca store, but she'd be doing herself a favor by submitting. I mean, she's already shacking up with a guy. If she wants to stay true to her convictions, she should really tie the knot.
