Rep. Steve King Explains How ObamaCare Could Cover Illegals, MSNBC's Shuster Dismisses Arguments as Politics

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) appeared on MSNBC around 3:40 p.m. EDT today to defend Rep. Joe Wilson's (R-S.C.) claim that President Obama was lying about Democratic health care reforms not ensuring "public option" coverage of illegal immigrants. [MP3 audio available here]

King explained at length about Democrats voted down Republican amendments to put in place an enforcement mechanism to check the legal status of public option applicants.

Of course at the end of his interview, Shuster was unmoved, sticking to his guns that Joe Wilson "was lying" and insisting that Republicans were more interested in making political hay out of the illegal immigration question than safeguarding taxpayers from subsidizing illegal immigration:

DAVID SHUSTER to co-host TAMRON HALL:  Regardless of the truth of the matter, and who's telling the truth and who isn't -- and I think the evidence is still pretty clear that the president was telling the truth and that Joe Wilson was the one that was lying -- but putting that aside, there is a political benefit, as you pointed out, for Joe Wilson, Steve King, and other Republicans to keep this going. Otherwise, I think they would have dropped it last week.

" Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa)

" Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) appeared on MSNBC -"

He shouldn't have.

The "Mainstream" Media: By liberals. For liberals.

Agreed

I am quite fond of Rep. King, personally as well as professionally (He is my Representative.) but, I don't believe he should have appeared on MSNBC.   While he handled the anchors well, it's just wasting a good arguement on folks who show contempt prior to investigation.

"Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain." Official Motto of the State of Iowa

That's ridiculous. If King

That's ridiculous. If King is right, as you seem to believe he is, why would he be afraid of a reporter? Even Obama agreed to be interviewed by Bill O'Reilly on Fox News. Where are your guts? By the way, King was wrong. There is a verification provision on all five bills currently moving through Congress. The amendments that were voted down were a joke, with one demanding that doctors in emergency rooms refuse "service" to patients until their citizenship status had been verified. That's the kind of absurd crap that some people were trying to tack onto the bills and they were correctly voted down. The fact is, doctors are compelled to treat the sick and injured by the Hippocratic Oath, regardless of the patient's status and Medicaid has been the instrument which has reimbursed hospitals for this care (otherwise even more ERs would be closing). For that reason, undocumented immigrants will continue to receive medical care at hospitals. The only way to solve that is to address the greater issue of illegal immigration, which is an incredibly complex and controversial problem. Anybody, including Rep. King and people like you, who wants to piggy-back the immigration problem on top of health care reform is simply trying to sabotage reform. This amounts to political cowardice and duplicity of the worst kind. Why doesn't King just admit that he thinks our health care system is doing just fine, despite the fact that premiums will probably double in the next 7 years, and refuse to vote for reform?  Only a fool or political moron would demand that hospitals be forced to close their emergency rooms because the government has decided to withhold reimbursement for care provided to people who cannot pay.

→ Jar-Jar

You write so beautifully, so flowingly, so meticulously.  Have you ever considered writing a book?

BWAHAHAHA!!!

You're seeing reform, but since it interferes with the demolition team working on your side of the aisle, you call it sabotage.

I notice your silent  assent to ACORN promoting sex slavery.  Do you really expect anyone to take your pontification on any subject seriously?

LYDSEXICS UNTIE!

We can all dig up unrelated

We can all dig up unrelated controversies and toss out juvenile insults in order to derail a discussion about health care reform, but the only reason to do that is because your argument is too weak to stand on its own. That's why I love it here at NewsBusters so much. The first thing out of your collective mouths are personal attacks and sarcasm, which is tantamount to waving a white flag (or is that a Confederate flag?). The second you start losing an argument, you resort to this puerile crap.

→ Jar-Jar

Your choice of battlegrounds speaks volumes about the depth of your understanding.

I understand your unwillingness to condemn the racist antics of your brethren.  It flows within you also.

And I don't mind being called childish from the likes of you.  Your race-baiting doesn't nearly cover the racism you're peddling.

LYDSEXICS UNTIE!

And what are you peddling

And what are you peddling here? I ask the question because your comments are consistently irrelevant to the issue. Do you think that insulting me, cable television stations and liberal journalists amounts to an argument? If you and your fellow klansmen here aren't racists, then why do you NEVER address any of the facts? Why do you never respond with useful information and, instead, resort to schoolyard tactics? The answer is that you don't really care about facts or details, especially when they don't validate your antebellum point-of-view.  Do you and the rest of the Republican Party really want to stand for the kind of greed. lack of compassion and self-absorption which would deny medical care to sick and injured children and the elderly because they are undocumented? Is that the political ground you're trying to hold? I don't think it is. I think your primary objective has nothing to do with health care reform or even immigration. You are so mortified that a black man is sitting in the White House that you have lost control of your sensibilities. The only thing that matters now is to de-legitimize this President by road-blocking everything that he's trying to do, even if it would be helpful to you and your family. Politics of self-destruction. Racism. If the shoe fits...

Encino Johnny again uses new fave word "antebellum"

We're not mortified that a black man is sitting in the White House.

We're mortified that he's never in it.

Another empty-headed,

Another empty-headed, pointless reply which only serves to validate my initial comment. Keep up the good work.

JRJ08, You forgot to call

JRJ08,

You forgot to call him a racist.

Don't get the truth in that, huh, Johnny?

Why am I not surprised.

→ Jar-Jar

Though your posts are a torrent of disjointed ramblings, uncut by convention of punctuation, some of us have tried to read and understand them.

Really, you should write a book.  (OK, I'm just saying that because I think you should find other, not necessarily more productive, pursuits)

I care about the facts.

  1. I'm insured
  2. You want me to pay even more for deadbeat insurance
  3. You agree that President Obama is a liar because you contend coverage of Illegal Aliens is an eventuality.

I don't understand much of the teenie-bopper lingo, but what I'm hearing from you is;

Like, yeah, Obama's lying, but he's not "lying" lying.

LYDSEXICS UNTIE!

Illegal aliens?

I believe you mean "undocumented immigrants." [sniff sniff]

→ SOL

I have to admit I'm an "Illegal Alien".  Of course that's only when I sneak into a country other than my own.

LYDSEXICS UNTIE!

JRJ08, The second you

JRJ08,

The second you start losing an argument, you resort to this puerile crap.

That's pretty funny coming from someone who makes a habit of throwing out unsubstantiated accusations of racism and when asked to back it up... abandons the argument.

It took you what - two posts before you accused Cool of being a racist? Care to actually point to anything Cool has written that would support your claim?

Yea, I won't hold my breath.

And you're criticizing others for having weak arguments.

If you are wondering why you are getting a bunch of sarcasm, it's because no one who throws out charges of racism at the drop of a hat is taken seriously. For most, you aren't worth the effort of an actual argument.

I've visited and commented

I've visited and commented in this forum many times and have come to know many of the regulars here. So my characterization is obviously not based on "two posts". And, again, your comment here is totally focused on me rather than the points which I have made. That is exactly what I was talking about in my first comment. Thanks for validating my point.

JRJ08, The point of my

JRJ08,

The point of my post was to address your characterization of the types of arguments you see on this site, not to address the topic you and Cool were discussing.

I was pointing out that, given the manner in which you argue your points, you're in no real position to criticize others.

Or are you saying that, if in the course of a debate I make a side comment to the effect that the Earth is flat, other's can't comment on it since it isn't part of the main topic of debate?

I'd love for you to try to argue that.

And the irony here is that your original slam on posters here was an ad hominem argument anyways which means you weren't really sticking to the topic to begin with.

By the way - I noticed that yet again you've failed to actually back up your accusations of racism with any evidence. Isn't that the second or third time I've asked?

Please continue patting your pet cause on the head, proclaiming yourself "Defender of the Less Fortunate".

Whatever you need to do.  I have to admit condescension has paid off beautifully for your ideology in perpetuating the cycle of dependency.

Your well-managed class of synthetically induced beggarism is the shillelagh you take into battle.

LYDSEXICS UNTIE!

Cool: I have a theory for the "defender" complex

My theory is that Johnny, who hails from the exclusive, virtually all-white enclave of Encino (black pop. 1.78%, Latinos 4%), suffers from Acute Paranoid White Guilt Syndrome.

It is apparent that he never interacts with minorities unless they are mowing his lawn, cleaning his house or bussing his table.

This contributes to his current state of being awash in cultural guilt, yearning somehow to 'do more' for the minorities he has purposely isolated himself from.

If there is a racist here at NB, it is he.

→ You got it SOL

He waits for a neighboring table to leave a $2 tip so he can puff himself up with his magnanimous $2.12 (and some lint)

LYDSEXICS UNTIE!

JRJ08 is a funny little guy :)

but like any true bigot (which he is, just in reverse), his mind is closed and his mouth is wide open

the dope even uses the tired out 'kkk' smears, how brainless... poor little funny guy

Cool:

"Two urns up" on that one - BWAHAHAHA!!!

A few facts for Encino Johnny to ruminate upon:

The Hippocratic Oath varies wildly, and is merely ceremonial when it is used. So your premise that "undocumented immigrants" (aka illegal aliens to the rest of us) must receive free care in a hospital because a physician swore to uphold the Hippocratic Oath is baloney. The hospital administrators make that decision, not the physician.

Sidenote: one of the tenets of the oath is that a physician may not perform abortions or prescribe anything to end a pregnancy. So that would make an abortion clinic "doctor" a steamfitter, I guess.

The amount of right-wing

The amount of right-wing disinformation about the Oath is ubiquitous on the internet now days because of the health care controversy. The bottom line is that the vast majority of medical schools have their graduates take the modern version of the Hippocratic Oath, and most doctors, thank God, take that Oath to heart. When a patient comes into an emergency room, the very first person he or she sees is NOT an administrator. They are immediately evaluated by the ER physician or an attending nurse, which is a form of care in itself. The issue of abortion, which you've thrown into this discussion just like your friend threw in immigration, is not as simplistic as your comment implies. The vast majority of abortions which are performed in hospitals are done because the fetus isn't viable or the birth would endanger the mother. In any case, with regard to health care reform, all of the bills in Congress expressly forbid government subsidies for abortions UNLESS the pregnancy is the result of a rape, or incest, or the mother's life is in danger. This is mandated in the Hyde Amendment. Any health care reform which violated that amendment would be thrown out by the Supreme Court. Back to the Hippocratic Oath, the few doctors who might not have taken the Oath because it wasn't required at their med school probably would tell you that nothing in the Oath is inconsistent with their reasons for going into medicine in the first place. And, as far as "baloney" is concerned, no version of the Oath contains the word "abortion".

The old right-wingers again, huh?

"I will neither prescribe or administer a lethal dose of medicine to any patient even if asked nor counsel any such thing nor perform the utmost respect for every human life from fertilization to natural death and reject abortion that deliberately takes a unique human life." The Modern (1995) Version. Incidentally, this is the version US Army physicians take (in addition to many med schools), and I would not characterize the Army as 'right wing', would you?

"I will neither give a deadly drug to anybody who asked for it, nor will I make a suggestion to this effect. Similarly I will not give to a woman an abortive remedy." From the Classical Greek Version, Johns Hopkins Press, 1943.

Again, the hospital's policy dictates who gets free care, not doctors bound by the Hippocratic Oath.

Regarding abortions being permitted if the 'mother's life is in danger' - this has had more homes blown in it than Mt. Suribachi, to wit the left's favorite abortion hero Tiller who performed thousands of such 'life-saving procedures.'

Shuster

David Shuster is the Kanye West of the news media. A complete jackass.

Hey, not fair

To those beasts of burden, but it is the symbole of his party!

Proud member of the MOB - Move Over Barack, we want our country back!

There is no sense in being stupid, if you can't prove it! - my dad V

Illegals abuse the ER anyway

Illegals can currently just go visit the ER and receive treatment as it is today. The hospital cannot collect the money from these people so the services get written off as bad debt so the taxpayers eat the cost anyways.

The so-called MSM cannot even back up the claims they make about ObamaCare not covering illegals. All they say is evidence (what?) is clear enough that Obama was telling the truth (how?) and they must consistently do this over and over again. Why do these guys go on MSDNC and put up with this garbage.

"You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time." ~Abraham Lincoln

What do you mean, "illegals

What do you mean, "illegals abuse the ER"? You mean they go there for medical care even when they're not sick or injured? Do you think that a human being is being abusive when they take their child to an emergency room knowing that they can't afford to pay for the care they'll receive? What's the matter with you? Are you that incapable of walking in another person's shoes?

I'm sure....

Shuster also dimisses his morning constitution as fodder for his excremental talking points.

"What a revoltin' development this is!"

Chester Riley

Warm and fuzzy all over

Schuster is still sipping the Kool Aid I see!

Stretch Mouth Shyster

Of course, David Shuster, the president ALWAYS tells the truth, doesn't he?  I think David Shuster and Chris Matthews try to have simultaneous thrills about Obama up their legs at the same time.

You saying

they want to be part of an Obama sandwich?

"Otherwise, I think they would have dropped it last week."

So it's the GOP keeping this alive? Good one.

Freedom is a vital component of human effectiveness and fulfillment.

What is David Shuster?

Maybe someone on this can answer me this question:

Is David Shuster a reporter of news items, or a purveyor of his own opinion?

Is it explicitly stated that he is one or the other?

If he bills himself as a reporter, and yet becomes a participant in the news cycle based on his own opinions, he is not a reporter.

If he were a reporter, he would have listened to his guest, and said something to the effect of "that's what this guy thinks."  That is all.  No color should be added, no Shuster opinion or analysis should be added.

If, and only if, he declares himself a player in the drama can he add analysis, bias, personal perspective or his interpretations.

First thing first:  Sarbanes Oxley treatment for the Media.  If there is malfeasance or negligence in reporting, the authors, editors and writers should face legal consequences.  Every talking head and editor should be forced to sign their name to each piece they put into the marketplace, and bear liability for falsifying, bending, or outright misrepresenting the facts.

You better not mess with my Obama.....

What a shameless rumpswab.    I bet in between segments that David is  doodling on his notes "Barack and David...TLA"

" if Republicans are able to stop Barack Obama on health care, 'it will be his Waterloo, it will break him....-Sen. Jim DeMint

Shuster is probably right.

Shuster is probably right. I mean, we don't let illegals work here in America, so why would you folks believe he would allow them to get health insurance subsidized by citizens?

/sarc off

The only question I have is what do Shuster's and Matthew's lovers think when they shout out Obama's name during sex?

Eleven comments so far (now

Eleven comments so far (now twelve)...we've officially quadrupled Shyster's ratings.

"I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered."  -George Best

Excellent! The 100 or so

Excellent! The 100 or so people who still watch MSNBC will be very pleased!

On another note: whatever you say about Shuster you have to give him one thing.  He's fairly consistent and open about his adoration for The One.  Probably even has a shrine to him set up in his closet.

Why choose the lesser of two evils?

"Regardless of the Truth of the Matter..."

WHAT?  Shuster DENIES the truth, which has been spelled out for him, and his cohort allows him to get away with what he said?  How co-dependent is this couple?

Shuster is SO stupid as to actually think that what he read actually was meaningful language.  He ignores the FACTS.  As does Hall.

No wonder Shushter said what he did AFTER the video link to Rep King was cut.

What Obama-slobbering MORONS! (I'm angry this kind of false "journalism" is allowed to be on the air.)

The Ministry of Propaganda and Indoctrination at the White House is a crackerjack team, huh?  Poor fools.

Shuster plays fast and loose

Shuster has once again been playing fast and loose with the COMPLETE truth. Why, if the President was not mistaken (lying) about no healthcare coverage for illegal immigrants was a new amendment put in the bill requireing verification of status by producing a SS card? This new provision was done in the wee hours thurday night after the joint session. As always Obama just like Clinton parsed his words. It is still a lie because he knew there was no way to stop illegal immagrants from getting Health Care. You can say something is illegal all you want, put it in a bill, it does not matter if there is no way to enforce that provision. It is just window dressing and nothing more.

That is why the full bill needs to be read and understood. The sad news is this. The Public will never get to read the real bill, whatever it is, before the president signs it. The house and senate do not pass the same versions and the differences are hammered out in the Reconciliation Committee behind closed doors away from public scrutiny. That committee could put anything back in as long as the leadership in both houses agree. Does anyone here really think that Obama will keep his promise that he will post the bill for a week before signing it? He broke that promise within a week of taking office when he signed the Stimulus Bill. He made sure it was law before anyone could look.
