AP, WaPo Tarnish Evangelists by Association with Late Prosperity Gospel Huckster

photo by Associated Press | NewsBusters.orgFrederick J. Eikerenkoetter II, more popularly known as "Rev. Ike", has gone to his reward. The 74-year old prosperity gospel huckster died on July 29 in Los Angeles.

But in covering the story, the Associated Press and the Washington Post have carelessly tarnished legitimate preachers of the Christian Gospel by association, by lumping in Eikerenkoetter with more biblically orthodox Protestant preachers as an "evangelist."

The July 30 Associated Press obituary, linked here as syndicated at Time.com, directly called "Rev. Ike" an "evangelist," while Joe Holley's July 31 obit at the Washington Post indirectly styled the religious con man as an evangelist by comparing his popularity to Billy Graham:

Claiming more followers during his heyday than any evangelist except Billy Graham, he earned an estimated million dollars a month from listeners across the hemisphere.

But Holley's obituary makes clear "Rev. Ike" was interested not with saving souls but bringing in the sheaves of greenbacks:

As the collection basket made its way among the movie-house rows of his New York church, he reminded his congregants that the clink of loose change was offensive to his ears, and to God's. The whisper of paper currency is what he delighted to hear.

The Boston Globe noted in 1998 that he targeted the elderly and the poor in his mailings, with a particular emphasis on those of African and Caribbean descent.

One of his fundraising techniques was to send a letter containing a piece of yarn or a sliver of prayer rug that could be used as either a charm or a curse. The letter exhorted the recipient to mail it back the following day with a donation of at least $20, so that Rev. Ike could bless it. Failure to return it, with a donation, could have dire consequences, the letter claimed.

That sounds more like witchcraft than anything witnessing to the death, resurrection and imminent return of Christ, the focal point of the ministry of Christian evangelists like Billy Graham.

Of course part of the problem in the labeling lies with the Associated Press Stylebook, the bible, as it were, for journalists. Here's what the entry for evangelist (bold and italics from the Stylebook) commands:

evangelist Capitalize only in reference to the men credited with writing the Gospels: The four Evangelists were Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

In lowercase, it means a preacher who makes a profession of seeking conversions.

But even with that definition, it's abundantly clear Eikerenkoetter's life's work was to get as rich as possible off the gullibility of those entranced by his con man charisma, not in winning converts to an established confession of faith.

Even for a mainstream media that just doesn't get religion, it's a bit much to insult the intelligence of readers by lumping "Rev. Ike" in with doctrinally orthodox Christian preachers like Billy Graham.

To most in the media and

To most in the media and generally in the world, a preacher is a preacher, regardless of whether they actually preach from the Bible as it says. Religion is a topic that a lot of reporters have trouble with, particularly in knowing the names of different holidays and services in the Catholic Church (I know I've had trouble with them at times as a reporter, but it helps to ask for the right term if you don't know it.). I only get as far as I do because I consider myself a religious scholar with an interest in these things.

Ever since Elmer Gantry

We Catholics have enough problems with priests; most priests are great, hard working, dedicated people. But the few who are screwy are really screwy.

By the way, today is St. Ignatius Day, the founder of the Jesuits. Wish your local Jesuit a happy feast day.

Protestant priests and ministers, or the evangelical preachers, have the same problem. Most are terrific. You can't find better people. But when you get a screwy one, they're really screwy.

I'm no expert on Reverend Ike. But I do know about the media. Any chance they can take a shot on religious folks, they'll take it.

This has been foretole, and

This has been foretold, and has been happening since Apostolic times.  The Bible is full of warnings against false teachers.  Satan uses them as a weapon against God and those who trust in Him.

here's a pointer, KC

If you ever hear anyone talk about Word of Faith, Prosperity Faith, or Prosperity Gospel...run far far away. The slang term for it is Cadillac Christianity. Nasty stuff, that is.

They call it "Name it and

They call it "Name it and Claim It."

IMO, that is not a church, it is a scam.

It is why the Bakers and others like them saw no problem with lavishing riches on themselves.  They believed that God wanted them to be rich.  Thus, they justified their greed.

I have a friend who recalled seeing the lovely Mrs. Baker showing off a mink coat and claiming that God wanted her to have that coat.

So there!!

indeed, motherbelt

Joyce Meyer, Creflo Dollar, Benny Hinn, TD Jakes and Kenneth Copeland all preach that nonsense today. They convince people that material success is an outward sign of spiritual growth, so you know that God loves you because He gives you shiny things.

Good ambassadors of evangelical teaching are Franklin Graham, James Dobson, and John MacArthur.

There is a name it and

There is a name it and claim it prosperity preaching church directly across from where I live.  The place is packed every Wednesday night and every Sunday morning.  They've expanded the parking twice and they still park on the grass.  Paul said people would raise up for themselves false teachers who will tickle their ears.  And that's what name it and claim it does.  Btw - there is no such gift in scripture as name it and claim it.

well said misterbee

The Bible repeatedly and clearly says that everything good comes from God and pours down onto us. God does not share credit for His blessings, so the fact that we "claim" something has nothing to do with anything.

It takes a willful agenda to read the Bible any other way.

Never heard of

Never heard of him.

Gone to his reward, eh?  That's one way of saying it.

Allow me to elucidate

Rev. Ike was kinda like the Sharpton and Jessie J. of the 60/70s, except he had actually had a church and preached. However, like the two aforementioned buffoons, he also had no theology or divinity degree.

Not to be confused with notorious wife-pumeller Ike Turner or Southpark's Kyle Broflovski's little adopted baby brother Ike.

Elucidation!  Ah Yes.

Elucidation!  Ah Yes.  Thanks!

*shudders*

Prosperity gospel is one of the most evil and destructive things ever invented. It doesn't belong in the same sentence with Billy Graham. Once again AP shows they know zero about Christianity.

Joe Gibbs

It's funny - just last night, I happened to watch Hannitty, but only because I spotted Joe Gibbs on it. I always thought that Gibbs was a class act. He always had incisive things to say, so I hung around long enough to see the segment (the Phillies were playing in San Francisco, late in the evening, so I had time to kill).

Gibbs was talking about guiding principles for life. As a philosopher, self-help babble usually turns me off. But he was talking about his own financial problems, and the need to steward your resources responsibly. I thought he made some good points. But he talked more about responsibility than money itself. It's the need for good stewardship that makes the point.

As it is, the phrase "prosperity gospel" is always more about prosperity than about gospel.

Illogical

Another errror in logic from our "jounalists"--hasty generalization. I'm shocked! It's like saying ALL Chicago politicians are corrupt ---oh, wait a minute---

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

Rev Ike

say " the lack of money is the root of all evil."

When I was a kid I heard that he would take up the collection and say that all the momey that stuck to the ceiling was the Lord's and all that hit the floor was mine.

Semper suprene nitens

North Carolina now has the worst government money can buy.

"Reverand Eikerenkoette's

"Reverand Eikerenkoette's estate, said to be significant, will be handled by noted attorney Algonquin J. Calhoun, Esq."

Truth be known...

Reverend Ike was more in tune with shakedown money hustlers like Reverend Jesse and Reverend Al.

Gotta Go Against The Grain

Preachers and politicans, are after the money, end of story.  The only difference is technique.  I see no problem lumping these parasites together.

Sorry, friend, but...

You have been blinded by the bad press about preacers. Yes, there are a few are bad apples. But don't base your whole way of thinking by what your read in the papers.

I have attended several Christian churches, Protestant and Catholic, and not one of them was led by a parasite. A Bible reading Christian can tell a fraud a mile away (which means those taken in by the frauds in our midst did NOT know their Bible).

Your lack of knowledge, coupled with your inability to tame your tongue, saddens me.

you're right AI

My current pastor, who has a full time job to support his family, often stays up late at night to help people, and manages a limited budget to keep his church open, yeah he's all about the money.

You don't have to go against the grain.  That's a matter of free choice.

There is only one place (that I'm aware of) in the Word of God where he says "Try Me"

Bring your full tithe to my Temple so that there
will be plenty of food in my house. Try me, and see if I will not
open the gates of heaven and pour out so many blessings on you,
spiritual and material, that you will not be able to count them all.

That, also, is your choice.

I'm a Baptist preacher and

I'm a Baptist preacher and I can tell you right now, I'm not in it for any money.  The only way a preacher can get rich is to preach the prosperity gospel or write a book and head up a mega church.  I speak out against such heresy, and but I dont preach it.

So the AP calls the Gospel writers something that I don't recall them ever being called in the Bible. Why not just call them community organizers or gynecologists?

Hey, if you don't want to capitalize Evangelist (out of respect, which the AP lacks), then don't. But don't just make stuff up. What are you, journalists?

Actually, the writers of the

Actually, the writers of the gospel accounts have historically been called Evangelist through the history of the Church.

e.g. St. John the Evangelist.

While the term is not used in the Bible to describe Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John per se, the term "evangelist" (uncapitalized) is used in Scripture to describe a ministerial office for the edification of the church. Among the ranks of evangelists were Timothy, the Apostle Paul's protege:

Acts 21:8 (Show me Acts 21)
On the next day we departed and came to Caesarea, and we entered the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him.

Ephesians 4:11 (Show me Ephesians 4)
And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds[1] and teachers,[2]
[1]Or pastors [2]Or the shepherd-teachers

2 Timothy 4:5 (Show me 2 Timothy 4)
As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

Good scripture quotes, but I

Good scripture quotes, but I think you missed my point.

Evangelist is not a proper

Evangelist is not a proper noun, hence it's not capitalized. I have no issue with the lack of capitalization for those who are evangelists like Billy Graham or his son Franklin Graham. I have a problem with using the title to describe hucksters like "Rev. Ike."

I give up.

I give up.

You have the right to give

You have the right to give your money to the PTL Club, to pay astrologers to do readings for you, to pay more for organic food, etc.  If you want to get taken for a ride and are OK with it and maybe fulfills your life in some way then good for you...really, no sarcasm here.

But, falling for a huckster who has the power to screw my country, my family and myself over is a different matter altogether.

One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 61% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory (yep...approval for Congress now at 39%...do you believe that!?).

I Liked Ike

Dating myself here , but when I was younger I would watch Ike.  I hadn't seen anything like him before.  He was so shameless in his greed , that even as a child you knew this guy can't be for real.  Those who sent him money or donated were just as greedy and ignorant.   He rarely got into racial stuff and was really entertaining.  It's like watching the patter of the snakeoil salesman.  You know he's a phony but you have to admire his AUDACITY .  (oh I'm not making any comparisons  here)  Ike was a bettr speaker and dresser.

"Don't let the bastards grind you down."

Red

Me too. I remember Ike

Me too. I remember Ike saying something like "The main problem that people has got is lack of money." He apparently took care of his own problem through influence rather than the forceful coercion that the POTUS likes to impose. Nobody had to send him a dime.

Rev Ike is the grand daddy

Rev Ike is the grand daddy of Benny Hinn and Creflo Dollar.  The only ones the prosperity gospel is working for are the ones preaching it.
