Whoopi Goldberg's Mother of a Gaffe: A Man Invented Mother's Day?

Photo of Ken Shepherd.

Mother's Day was invented by Anna Jarvis, a West Virginian who, from 1907 to 1914 devoted considerable energy to establishing state and national holidays marking Mother's Day. Jarvis's inspiration, of course, was her deep devotion to her late mother.

But don't tell Whoopi Goldberg that. [audio for download here]

"I feel like Mother's Day is a man's holiday. You know, because it was put together, a woman didn't put together Mother's Day. A woman put together several other holidays but Mother's Day was not one of them," the moderator of ABC's "The View"  insisted on the May 8 program.

The faulty assertion came during a chat with Alyse Myers, author of "Who Do You Think You Are?", which chronicles her strained relationship with her mother.

After insisting that a man invented Mother's Day, Goldberg suggested that men typically have more pleasant relationships with their mothers than women do:

GOLDBERG: I think that guys have a different relationship to their parents, to their mothers. Men have a different relationship to their mothers than girls do.

MYERS: I totally agree. As a matter of fact, because of my lousy relationship with my mother, I was afraid to have a daughter. And I have a daughter, and thank God, I can't imagine-

ELISABETH HASSELBECK: Does she love you?

MYERS: She says she does.

To me the stupidest comment

To me the stupidest comment came from Myers when she responded in such a serious manner to Whoopi's error by saying "That's interesting. I didn't know that." Ha!

However, I agree that boys seem to be closer to their moms than girls. Of course, this has nothing to do with who established Mother's Day.

Nice product placement on Whoopi. Cha-ching!

Taken as fact.

Taking what whoppi said as fact without any hint of questioning. As if she is that all knowing wise one from Star Trek....Hey wait

Another well educated

Just another shining example of the brilliantly educated and knowledgeable liberal icon being placed in a position of high visibility to peform to the best of her abilities.

Can we team up Whoopie and Joe Biden

And have the left-wing comedy tour?

Hey, I got the wrong "CHANGE"!

whoops speaks truth

children DO relate differently to each parent.

However she fails by speaking matter of factly for something she (obviously) knows nothing about.  Honestly I didn't know either.  And if someone had inquired I would have responded with "Hey! I have no clue - I'll look that up."  This concept is lost on Whoopi.  She'd rather look smart.  I wonder if anyone bothered to correct her later in the day.

Stupidity

Even though Fats O'Donnell has left, her stupidity still lingers on.

she's no Guinan

In contrast to the image of wisdom she projects as the Star Trek bartender/advisor, Whoopi's grasp of history (+ science) is woefully incomplete and horribly inaccurate.

Most people will occasionally mis-remember a point of fact and use it to reason some other invalid point.  But Whoopi seems especially prolific and cavalier about it.

why should she

be different from the rest of the moo's on the show? They all (except Elizabeth) seem to have room temperature IQ's, so why should Whoopi-trek be any different?

Ashamed really...

Ashamed she was ever allowed to be apart of Star Trek...   :(

Whoopi's gaffe

Well, that was my first and last view of "The View."

They need a version of Red

They need a version of Red Eye's Andy Levy for their own "Half Time Report" to fact check them - yeah, like that's gonna happen...

Chris... Regarding

Chris...

Regarding Levy...that would be priceless!

Like you say though...that ain't never gonna happen.

Still, just the thought gives me a chuckle.

She Just Made The List

Everytime I see or hear about something like this, I think to myself "that just made the list". The list I refer to is a made-up list, in my head, of things that are wrong with this country.

Whoopi Goldberg just made the list!

Man bashing?

Where are they bashing men?

There's a difference between Liberalism and Feminazis' who are hated by all. Except the far-left.

Communists never let the

Communists never let the need for verifiable data stand in the way of making a Leftist point on a class, gender, political or race issue.

I keep saying, that's the way they think.  Historical 'facts' and the like are the kinds of things they never learned because they were just too damn brilliant in school (K-through doctorate level in many, many cases) to be bothered...they were bored.  They preferred to sit around and daydream about their own outstanding, innate creativity and specialness.  They moped about not being understood and despised all those who didn't realize how truly gifted they were.

They operate on generalities, old wives' tales, political correctness, falsehoods bouncing around the echo chamber and the like.

Now you know why these kids aren't learning what they should.  Memorization is out the window (historical dates, where countries/states are, etc.-times tables, common formulas and so on) as is proper spelling, good grammar diagramming sentences...homework?  Just a waste of time.  Grades?  Mean nothing.  Everybody's special and should get an A no matter what.

I know...I've been dealing with this in the classroom for 17 years now.  Too many became teachers.  Too many write our textbooks.  Too many come up with educational theories...that don't work (but, are politically and socially acceptable so that's what counts).

One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 61% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory (yep...approval for Congress now at 39%...do you believe that!?).
