A terse one-paragraph mea culpa by a White House staffer now qualifies as a "profuse apology" at least when it's the Obama White House, and the paper reporting the story is the Washington Post.
That's how the paper's Tomoeh Murakami Tse and Michael D. Shear characterized an apology by White House Military Office director Louis Caldera for Monday's low altitude flyover photo-op of New York Harbor. Here's same 54-word apology in its entirety:
Last week, I approved a mission over New York. I take responsibility for that decision. While federal authorities took the proper steps to notify state and local authorities in New York and New Jersey, it’s clear that the mission created confusion and disruption. I apologize and take responsibility for any distress that flight caused.
Tse and Shear excerpted that apology in the 10th of their 16-paragraph story, "Aerial Photo Op Recalls 9/11 for Some," which ran on page A2 of the April 28 paper. The duo also noted that President Obama "has told aides he was furious over the handling of the matter" but that their source was "a person familiar with the matter, who was not authorized to speak publicly."
But wouldn't a profusely apologetic White House want to go on record at length about this, rather than expect a short statement from a mid-level staffer be the final word?

April 28, 2009 - 22:27 ET by Unsaneand Obama said it was a mistake and it wouldn't happen again. Good enough for me ONLY because it was done by your beloved His Majesty The Shahinshah. If the hyper-evil bastard Bush had done that, you would interrupt a House session SCREAMING, DEMANDING his immediate impeachment and removal from office.
For your information, only when Obama is in that plane, is it Air Force One. Really? I'll sleep better knowing something that has been hammered relentlessly into my brain for decades. But then, Leftists just can't help but talk down to people. Next you'll be telling me what a DV-1 is. To assume that he knew where both the planes were that day is ridiculous. No, it isn't. See, if something bad happens in this country, He may need to get the hell out of dodge, and fast. He knows damn well where the VC-25s are. If He doesn't, someone physically close to Him (like perhaps the Naval officer with the "Football") DOES. I would bet that someone there, and quite possibly His Majesty The Shahinshah Himself, knows exactly where they are, as well as the E-4s. No one else but Him uses them.
See, this exhibits extremely poor leadership skills, and the fact that you cannot see this either betrays your own lack of leadership experience or your OWN irrational Shahinshah apologism, or both. If He is this GREAT LEADER I am so repeatedly, constantly assured that He is, He would know that ALL He would have to do is to call someone (a logisitician in all likelyhood) who knows where the planes are if He wanted to know about them. Doubtless He is constantly briefed on where they are. So, if He cannot keep that information in that vast, awe-inspiring mind of His...what does that say about His leadership skills?
Don't tell me He or someone working for Him didn't know about this, either. The VC-25 doesn't twitch without a small army of logisticians knowing about it. How do you expect to move the President or anything else around the globe without a thorough knowledge of logistics? All of these things are planned well in advance. I know that some poor soul at McGuire, for instance, was tasked to attend a meeting to discuss the possibilities of the VC-25 (insert Special Airlift Mission # here) landing at McGuire for emergency or refuel purposes. Doubt me? I have worked countless Distinguished Visitor missions. I know how they work.
I can't wait for the replies: He's your messiah, drink the kool-aid, etc. Oh, and he did it on purpose, he's a terrorist, he's a muslim. The usual bull crap. Fun times I can't wait for unsubstantiated BS from you either. Quote for me where you have seen Him called a "Muslim" or a "terrorist". If you can't, have the common courtesy to STFU. Oh, and He's not your Messiah. He is your personal Jesus. He is your God. That is only part of the reason you are so quick to apologize for Him, however.

Our citizens -- who have been attacked by said terrorists -- are fair game. Besides, we can always count on their votes by invoking the real scary words: Cheney. Bush.

April 28, 2009 - 11:44 ET by katainkentFrom the Telegraph :
NYPD Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne said the plane and F-16 fighter jets had authorisation to fly across New York, including past the Statue of Liberty.
He confirmed local authorities were given a directive not to inform the public about the flyover and that any inquiries were to be directed to the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA).
An FAA spokesman said three aircraft were flying on an operation above the city and one of those jets was a back up for Air Force One, the call sign used when the President is on board.
'The Department of Transport co-ordinated the flight with FAA and we made the notifications to the city so they were aware that the flight would take place between 10am and 10.30am this morning,' he added.

White House staff now scouring thesaurus looking for appropriate words to use for the next level of revelation. There's More Going On Here Than Just Buffoonery
April 28, 2009 - 17:24 ET by SquonkamaticNot to sound like some kind of conspiracy thinking dingbat but I'm not buying any of this explanation: Nobody is this stupid or arrogant. There's more to this story than meets the eye, I am convinced of it. The whole "Aw shucks, we screwed up" routine stinks like a rotting cuttlefish washed up on the shore. Who knows what the real point of it was but they weren't just taking pretty pichurs. What did they think, that nobody would notice? There's some sort of evaluation going on right now about the public's reaction to the event though just what the purpose was is anybody's guess. But to say it was just poor planning and mis-communications belies the whole concept of buzzing NYC with a jumbo jet and two fighter jets. I don't expect to hear the truth about anything from this administration and there is an ominous overtone to the incident, especially in light of the manufactured media event with this swine flu baloney. The two happening simultaneously is too odd to ignore and their answer doesn't wash.

Blame Obama. No matter what. Blame Obama.
April 28, 2009 - 18:24 ET by JerNot that it comes as an enormous shock, but it is now quite apparent that--no matter what the decision, announcement, appointment, policy or legislative enactment, official or unofficial action, misstep, crisis (or response thereto), Obama will be blamed or criticized whether he is fully responsible or not at all.
From the swine flu [a diversion], to his cabinet appointments [they're all Marxists], to his outreach to Republicans [a cheap publicity stunt], to his teleprompter use [poof of his idiocy], to his handling of he piracy crisis [at first weak and feckless, then a murderer of black teenagers], to his relationship with the military [he hates them and they hate him], to his Afghanistan escalation [too aggressive], to his diplomatic initiaives [appeasement], to his overall vision for the nation [imposition of a gun-grabbing socialist/Marxist totalitarian state--time to secede from the Union]...other than Noel Sheppard praising his initial economic and national security appointees, has there been--after 100 days in office--one word by ANYONE at NB expressing even tepid support for a single action of Obama? Maybe I've missed it. I certainly can't read every blog and every comment.

April 29, 2009 - 00:57 ET by NL207Think about it this way:
Obama has just forced Chrysler to turn over 55% of its equity to the UAW. Chrysler has about $10 B in debt. The Government is effectively expropriating the assets of these creditors and turning them over to the UAW.
A bankrupt company has been siezed by the state and awarded to a political pressure group to the detriment of its creditors. No bankruptcy filing. The rights of the lienholders have been trampled flat.
Where does the Constitution extend the authority to do this to the President? How is the President permitted to bypass the bankruptcy laws? The Constitution is being subverted. Rule of law is being subverted. This is tyranny.

April 28, 2009 - 22:19 ET by Georgia GirlIt is truly ridiculous to claim somebody is "obsessively stalking" you when you are still on here. Nobody forces you to be on this site or on any particular blog, fella. So far, it's still a free country. You really do not have to respond back to people if you don't want to...and everybody has a right to make comments to anybody they want to on here. People can pop onto whatever blog they want to as well, so I'm not sure you can claim stalking behavior in the same sense as in the "real world." If somebody challenges you and you don't like it, then you just don't like it. But it's not like you have no options.
And since you are acting a little bit junior high-ish, I have been friends with Chose pretty much ever since I came on the site, Stewed Tomatoes, so why don't you do your research? Here's an idea - if you, chose, blonde, or anyone else in your club want to discuss a topic, I'm happy to respond. Otherwise, consider yourself ignored. I'm too old to mess around with these childish games.
PS - Stewed Tomatoes? Really?

April 29, 2009 - 11:55 ET by Georgia GirlYes, "Stewed Tomatoes" is self-explanatory. It's descriptive of what is happening to you. And oooh, I'm so ashamed that my Buddy List wasn't up and running. Boy, you are a quick one! If you will notice, I was laughing at myself about it. Uh, sure, that's exactly the same as your immaturity and lack of being able to handle yourself with Blonde and Chose...sure, it's the same. ^_^
I never said I wanted to discuss a topic with you. Did I say I did? And did I say that you engaged Chose first? Did I say that? I simply asked you to stop whining about other people forcing you interact with them. You have FREE WILL, don't you?
And childish games...why don't you go back and read your whiny behavior and my responses to you. Anybody on here is free to tell me I was being childish, but I think maybe you want to take a look at yourself, Stewed Tomatoes. And if you are going to ignore someone on here, here's a tip -- ignore them. Don't TELL them that you are going to ignore them. That's not really ignoring them, Stew. I'd think you would realize the immaturity of that, but I guess you sure told me -- really effective! ^_^

April 29, 2009 - 19:24 ET by QueenMumGeorgia et al: It seems to me the ones "acting junior high-ish" (which is a rather junior high-ish term in itself) are those who gather like buzzards as soon as certain members dare to comment. Anyone who pays attention knows what you're up to. Stop playing the innocent. You guys need to stop pretending to be so concerned about the integrity of N.B. while at the same time littering up the landscape with your one-liners and childish insults. It's obvious to anyone who reads what you harpies have to say that you delight in trying to drive others away. You spend more time "researching" other peoples' histories than you do offering anything of value. You all seem to be relatively intelligent. And yet your incessant troll-bashing (whether deserved or not) shows a lack of maturity. Not to mention a certain amount of paranoia.
It's not a "challenge" when someone posts a comment with which you disagree and you respond with insults. How about taking your own advice? "You really do not have to respond back to people if you don't
want to...and everybody has a right to make comments to anybody they
want to on here."
Note to Stew: Sorry. I'm sure you can stand up for yourself. I'm just tired of those who seem to be doing whatever they can to make this site appear juvenile while claiming that they hold the higher ground.

Doesnt say they were not either, in fact do you honestly think cnn would tell us anyway? BTW I thought this long before this thread. The Seals were there, I happen to think they would had been prepaired. Do you think the Seals would had just arrived and hung out below deck waiting? What would they be waiting on? Do you think they would rather shoot the pirates with a gun at Capt Phillips head? Why did they wait so long to shoot them? Why didnt they return fire when they were fired on? Why didnt they shoot them when the swap went bad?
What do you think happend?

However, do you not think he should be taking some criticism for bowing to a foreign leader, giving movies to Gordon Brown, (especially when you consider what Brown gave him), handing the Queen of England and Ipod filled with his speeches?

my thoughts on this thread
April 29, 2009 - 10:41 ET by candanceI've read this whole thread and now want to add my own two cents.
-I gave Obama credit for not messing up the pirate thing. Whether it was luck or whatever, it worked out well enough so I accept it. I also give him credit for not publicly criticizing Netanyahu. As for the Air Force One thing, if he says it wasn't his idea I believe him.
-Having said that, I agree with the others that you can't make me thank him for any more. Trampling over private business, appointing tax cheats that are "too not important not to confirm" and then blaming Bush for swine flu, these things make it impossible for Obama to come off likeable at all.
-As much as it pains me to disagree with chose, private blogs don't count as proof. I know CNN or Newsweek would never give them a fair shake, but at least they could submit to being vetted by Michelle Malkin. Do something to gain credibility.
~Aaieeeee...
April 29, 2009 - 11:05 ET by choselife3x*staggers, wrenches knife from back* ;-)
I'm not going to die on a mountain for the veracity of a blog by a Navy vet, but I'm more likely to consider it accurate than the official story coming out of the White House.
As far as my personal opinion on Jer's statement:
I thought he might get at least a nod of support for his handling of the piracy crisis.
I thought Obama bungled the whole thing by sending FBI negotiators to deal with pirates. It seemed a national embarassment to have four teenagers drifting powerlessly in a lifeboat, armed with nothing more than automatic weapons holding the U.S. Navy at bay for 3 days. I simply don't believe that this situation would have dragged on like that if the military had been free to deal with it as they saw fit. Obama screwed up royally here by trying to treat an act of piracy by foreign nationals like a run-of-the-mill bank robbery in downtown Chicago. I think he made the U.S. look weak, ineffective, and indecisive by his handling of the matter.
Rather than type all that and get into an opinion war with a lawyer, I posted a link I got from slickwillie on an Open thread last week. Mea culpa. *grin* *decides to clean and keep can's wicked cool Bowie knife*

chose...How about keeping that "Arkansas toothpick"
April 29, 2009 - 11:35 ET by JerHow about keeping that "Arkansas toothpick" in your back while I twist it a little.
So the Somali piracy incident [at least with regard to Obama's handling of same] was a "bungled national embarrassment". The mind reels when speculating on your potential descriptions had the episode been anything less than a resounding success.
And if this "run-of-the-mill bank robbery" [putatively, in Obama's view] has made our nation look weak and ineffective [indisputably, in your view], you must have been apoplectic when GWB groveled before the Red Chinese after one of it's MiG interceptors forced a U.S.N. reconaissance aircraft to crash land on its territory. An apology for encroaching on Chinese air space without authorization! Wow, now that's decisive leadership.

Jer, I realize you MUST be an apologist for your God, His Majesty The Shahinshah, but clearly you DO see the differences here?
If GWB "groveled", as you say, we'll have to wait a while to see. The State Department has only declassified documents up to the early 1970s in regards to diplomacy.
And like it or not, GWB did NOT fly around the world apologizing for the United States at every opportunity. Nor did he resolve to make America as whiny as possible (note the decision of HMTS to cap F-22 production at 187, far short of requirements, among other examples) as HMTS has done.
And no, this has much less to do with party as much as the fact that HMTS is a far Left ideologue. Again, like it or not, Bush was no Rightist ideologue.
