Under the new Obama rules, can this flyover be labeled as torture?

It was scary -- just like bugs are scary.

It caused panic, and fear of death -- just like the more safe waterboarding causes panic, and fear of death by drowning.

It was conducted against U.S. citizens -- oops, that's where it breaks down. It's only torture if we make sworn terrorist enemies uncomfortable.

Never mind. I just answered my question myself. Stupid self -- only enemy combatents, dressed in non-uniforms, who behead their captives on a whim -- can be protected from discomfort and scary things. Our citizens -- who have been attacked by said terrorists -- are fair game. Besides, we can always count on their votes by invoking the real scary words: Cheney. Bush.

I thought Obama was no-drama.  How could he then be furious?  You mean he didn't handle this photo-op with cool aplomb?   So is the media/administration lying that he was furious or that he's Mr. No-Drama?  Which is it?

NYPD Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne said the plane and F-16 fighter jets had authorisation to fly across New York, including past the Statue of Liberty.

He confirmed local authorities were given a directive not to inform the public about the flyover and that any  inquiries were to be directed to the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA).

An FAA spokesman said three aircraft were flying on an operation above the city and one of those jets was a back up for Air Force One, the call sign used when the President is on board.

'The Department of Transport co-ordinated the flight with FAA and we made the notifications to the city so they were aware that the flight would take place between 10am and 10.30am this morning,' he added.

Are any of you friends of Obama who monitor these sites feeling any sense of dread yet? Are any of you who truly believe that you need to cover up for this man sensing that things are just not right? This is your life too that is in jeopardy.  Do you care?  Or is it just more important to fit in? 

just listened to some on-the-street recordings of the reactions to the sight and sound of a jumbo jet buzzing NYC - it brought back a very unhappy memory - and I'm a thousand miles away. What in the heck are these guys thinking? I'm having a very difficult time understanding the new president's agenda. This was awful.

Not to sound like some kind of conspiracy thinking dingbat but I'm not buying any of this explanation: Nobody is this stupid or arrogant. There's more to this story than meets the eye, I am convinced of it. The whole "Aw shucks, we screwed up" routine stinks like a rotting cuttlefish washed up on the shore. Who knows what the real point of it was but they weren't just taking pretty pichurs. What did they think, that nobody would notice? There's some sort of evaluation going on right now about the public's reaction to the event though just what the purpose was is anybody's guess. But to say it was just poor planning and mis-communications belies the whole concept of buzzing NYC with a jumbo jet and two fighter jets. I don't expect to hear the truth about anything from this administration and there is an ominous overtone to the incident, especially in light of the manufactured media event with this swine flu baloney. The two happening simultaneously is too odd to ignore and their answer doesn't wash.

Not that it comes as an enormous shock, but it is now quite apparent that--no matter what the decision, announcement, appointment, policy or legislative enactment, official or unofficial action, misstep, crisis (or response thereto), Obama will be blamed or criticized whether he is fully responsible or not at all.

From the swine flu [a diversion], to his cabinet appointments [they're all Marxists], to his outreach to Republicans [a cheap publicity stunt], to his teleprompter use [poof of his idiocy], to his handling of he piracy crisis [at first weak and feckless, then a murderer of black teenagers], to his relationship with the military [he hates them and they hate him], to his Afghanistan escalation [too aggressive], to his diplomatic initiaives [appeasement], to his overall vision for the nation [imposition of a gun-grabbing socialist/Marxist totalitarian state--time to secede from the Union]...other than Noel Sheppard praising his initial economic and national security appointees, has there been--after 100 days in office--one word by ANYONE at NB expressing even tepid support for a single action of Obama?  Maybe I've missed it.  I certainly can't read every blog and every comment.

I've read this whole thread and now want to add my own two cents.

-I gave Obama credit for not messing up the pirate thing. Whether it was luck or whatever, it worked out well enough so I accept it. I also give him credit for not publicly criticizing Netanyahu. As for the Air Force One thing, if he says it wasn't his idea I believe him.

-Having said that, I agree with the others that you can't make me thank him for any more. Trampling over private business, appointing tax cheats that are "too not important not to confirm" and then blaming Bush for swine flu, these things make it impossible for Obama to come off likeable at all.

-As much as it pains me to disagree with chose, private blogs don't count as proof. I know CNN or Newsweek would never give them a fair shake, but at least they could submit to being vetted by Michelle Malkin. Do something to gain credibility.
