"Iowa Gives Gay Marriage a Thumbs Up," trumpets the front page teaser headline on ABCNews.com. But, the subhead explains, it was "Iowa's Supreme Court" not the people via their legislature or direct referendum that opened the door to same-sex marriage by finding the state's ban on the ceremony "violates [the state] Constitution."
The accompanying photo illustration (shown at right) depicts two (presumably) masculine, wedding-band-sporting left hands embracing. In the background is a long, unfurled rainbow flag, held aloft by marchers in a parade.
The story itself was filed by Amy Lorentzen of the Associated Press. Lorentzen jumped quickly into the jubilant reaction of gay marriage activists, but found no space for comment from traditional values advocates in her 18-paragraph story.

"The Domino Effect".
April 3, 2009 - 11:46 ET by SlyrrI could rail against rogue judges inflicting Political Correctness, and trampling the Constitution in the name of 'tolerance' and 'civil liberites'.
But I think it's more important to point out what this is really about - a leftist organized combination against religion. The comments I read about this had politicians saying things like 'Hopefully other states will follow'.
This proves what they're really after. With every state that 'legalizes' gay through a rogue court system that overthrows the will of the people, they hope to spread out to other states. Until at last, any state that isn't pro-gay is 'forced' to accept it.
And then, it will be churches that don't accept 'gay' that will be forced to accept it. After the prop 8 thing in California, I read the posts from angry gays who loudly screeched that it wouldn't be long before they 'forced' Mormons to conduct gay marriages in thier temples.
That, and the entire Iowa business proves undeniably that this was never about 'gay rights' or 'equality' or 'tolerance'. It's about forcing religious groups and institutions to accept perversion - or else.
Just read the comments. 'Here comes the God squad' said a Democrat, grinning at what he percieved as a loss for the GOP and Christianity.
They declared war against "Jesusland" in 2004. This is just another one of their battles.

April 6, 2009 - 18:50 ET by JasonCWhy do I have to take my cause everywhere? Generally, one focuses one's political/ideological energy on the place where one is a taxpayer/citizen/voter and has an immediate investment in whatever the issue is. So while I would like to see gay acceptance the world over, I think I'll begin with my own country, which happens to be an open and liberal society which purports to offer equal institutional rights for all, as opposed to countries which haven't even this pretext.
As for wishing it upon states other than the one in which I live; are you from Iowa? If not, why are you posting here?

April 6, 2009 - 18:53 ET by JasonCNo no, he got the point. He truly belives gay people are morally equivalent to pedophiles and rapists. It's well-documented. Apparently any deviation from normative behavior is equally evil, whether it involves a consensual loving relationship or rape and exploitation.

Iowa's constitutional
April 3, 2009 - 12:14 ET by Ken ShepherdIowa's constitutional amendment process is pretty lengthy and difficult by design. It can be done but will take a while. I believe they have to have two consecutive years where both houses of the legislature pass the amendment, and only then it goes to the ballot.
So at the earliest we're looking at 2010 or 2011 for a constitutional amendment before Iowa voters.
Clarification of Iowa's amendment process
April 3, 2009 - 13:28 ET by nkviking75Not quite, Ken. The requirement under Article X is that a proposed amendment must be approved by two successive legislatures. Let's say the amendment passed this year. It must be passed again by the legislature elected in the 2010 election. That means it would be 2011 at the earliest before the amendment would make it onto the ballot. Typically those questions are voted on during general elections, so in this imaginary scenario we Iowans probably couldn't vote on it before 2012.
The constitution of Iowa also requires this question to be put on the general election ballot every 10 years:
"Shall there be a convention to revise the constitution, and propose amendment or amendments to same?"
If the voters approve, the next legislature would have to set the wheels in motion to call the convention. The next time that question comes up on the ballot is next year. So there is a chance that we could force the issue sooner.
When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.
Thanks for clarifying that.
April 3, 2009 - 14:30 ET by Ken ShepherdThanks for clarifying that.
Having that last word
April 3, 2009 - 13:16 ET by MidAmericaHaving that last word on everything by these black robbed activists is not in the Constitution. This is a power grab that unequals the supposed three equal branches of government.
Why it's wrong
April 3, 2009 - 13:34 ET by KC MulvilleHere's a crucial paragraph from the opinion:
First, the opinion declares that the couples are already in "committed" relationships. That, after all, is what makes committed same-sex couples equal to man-woman couples. They're both committed. But that's the problem. Commitment is used broadly. What did they commit to?
To be clear, there's a difference between a marriage and an ordinary contract. When you draw up an ordinary contract, the state really doesn't care what you agreed to (assuming you haven't broken existing laws). All the state cares about is that you agreed to it. If you agreed to stand on a street corner with a shaved head, the court doesn't care whether it was a stupid thing to agree to. You agreed to it, so you can be sued and found liable if you break the agreement.
Marriage, on the other hand, isn't an open-ended agreement. For the state to recognize a marriage, the content of the agreement is specifically defined, not by the spouses, but by the state. The state defines what marriage means; in essence, they draw up the contract, and the spouses merely agree to it. Couples can't make that up on their own.
_______
There's so much subterfuge in this opinion that we could go on for hours. For instance, the court claims that a key issue is the raising of children. But they conveniently skip over the idea that marriage has anything to do with the bearing of children. For someone to claim that same-sex couples can raise children, they have to skip over the fact that someone outside the marriage is necessary to conceive the children. Does it make sense to justify a marriage on the grounds that someone outside the marriage can participate in conceiving the children?
What about raising children from previous marriages? Does it make sense to justify a permanent contract (which marriage is) by depending on a previous broken contract?
What about children conceived outside of marriage? And that's the central problem. The idea of same-sex marriage inevitable depends on separating the conception of children from it, thereby denying the exclusivity of marriage.

Iowa's history revised instantly in Wikipedia
April 3, 2009 - 22:44 ET by nkviking75I just took a look at Wikipedia's entry for "Iowa". Under the "History" heading is a sub-head declaring Iowa a "leader in civil rights". There you find three examples: Iowa's Supreme Court rejected slavery in 1839, before Iowa was a state; Iowa was the first state to allow women to practice law in 1869; and today's gay marriage ruling.
That didn't take long.
One other thought: Iowa has been a state since 1846. We're still using our original constitution, although it has been amended frequently. So why did it take 162 1/2 years to find a right to gay marriage?
When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.
