In "Kilpatrick Out, a Boost for Obama?", Time's Amy Sullivan explores the question of whether the resignation of the Democratic Detroit mayor will help the Obama ticket's chances in the swing state of Michigan. Sullivan relays that the Obama camp is "thrilled" by the end of the Kilpatrick saga, which had "damaged an already weakened Democratic brand in Michigan."
Yet as NewsBusters has docmented time and again, the national media has largely ignored the Kilpatrick scandal, and often omitted his Democratic party affiliation and Democratic superdelegate status when it has.
Indeed, even local papers with undoubtedly great familiarity with Kilpatrick's Democratic Party credentials have ignored his party label in news reporting. From my colleague Jacob Lybbert's blog entry earlier today:
At long last, the soon-to-be erstwhile Democratic mayor of Detroit, Kwame Kilpatrick, pleaded guilty and will resign as mayor. The Detroit Free Press reports all of the salacious details--except the singular detail that Kilpatrick is a Democrat.
[...]
NewsBusters writer Tom Blumer chronicled the New York Times's inability to name Kilpatrick's party, but the NYT & Free Press aren't alone in their decision to keep Kwame's party out of the ongoing scandal. CNN's report on the case also fails to note Kilpatrick's party affiliation. In describing Governor Jennifer Granholm's foot-dragging inability to act on the Detroit city council's recommendation that she remove Kilpatrick, CNN failed to point out that she, too, is a Democrat. What's this? A Democrat failing to remove another Democrat from office? Good thing prosecutors did their job so Granholm wasn't forced to do hers.

Hard working reporters
September 4, 2008 - 21:35 ET by Vivaldi5Late breaking news: sources inside the mainstream media say that 9 out of 10 reporters are also "thrilled" by this news. One newsman who wished to remain anonymous said, "I haven't worked this hard since our paper spent night and day trying to ignore the John Edwards scandal! Plus, every time I edited the word 'Democrat' out of our stories about Mayor Kilpatrick, NewsBusters was all over us! How are Olby, Katie, Mr. Soros and I supposed to get Mr. 'Hope/Change' elected with that kind of scrutiny?!???"
I know I've stated this
September 4, 2008 - 21:44 ET by UphillI know I've stated this before but every politician coming from southeast Michigan automatically has a big fat D after their name.
And I personally don't think Kwame's problems have hindered or helped Senator Obama's chances in the state.
Thank you and goodnight.
Chicago politics
September 4, 2008 - 23:16 ET by MrltavernKwamie is a reflection of Chicago Democratic politics. This isn't good for Obama. I have a good friend in Michigan and they will never forget Kilpatrick's horrible performance there. Chicago politics and the mayorship have been run by Democrats since the 30s. Corruption is blind. Blacks can be corrupt too. When you're all about the green, it doesnt matter the skin color.

Missing parts to the story
September 4, 2008 - 23:51 ET by suburbaniteHere's a headline from The Detroit News: "Mayor's attorneys blame media, politics for outcome of case"
The fact is that a great deal of the blame for the whole episode lies with the city of Detroit’s lawyers. If they had done their duty and exposed Kwame’s perjury right away instead of trying to cover it up, none of what transpired would have been necessary. Not only that, I'm sure they convinced Kwame to fight the charges to protect their own butts. That is, if Kwame was found innocent, they couldn't be found complicit in any cover-up.
Also, what gets lost in all of this is the fact that Kwame destroyed the lives of two Detroit police officers and lied to cover it up. The real tragedy is what happened to those two officers. You can say that they've been financially compensated for whatever happened to them but it took over five years for that case to be settled.
The people of Detroit have no one to blame except themselves. I think it possible that they may re-elect Kwame. It's too depressing to think about.
Watch out for Kwame's book when he gets out of jail: "How 'The Man', his lackeys, and their lynch mob railroaded me."

Even the local media here in
September 5, 2008 - 09:40 ET by GameGridEven the local media here in the supposedly conservative Utah did not mention his party affiliation once, even on the radio station I listen to that features Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck never bothered to mention it.
Maybe The Michigan Republican Party...
September 5, 2008 - 14:01 ET by geoff.gale...needs to put together an anti-Obama ad from footage of Barack Hussein Obama calling Kwame Kilpatrick a "great mayor" and "great leader", and predicting a long happy relationship with the hip-hop thug mayor. You can see it here:

As a native son and long time resident of Michigan, you all should know that Michigan is really two states - there's Detroit, and then there's the rest of the state, and loads of friction between the two. I feel safe in saying that a majority of people in Michigan were glad to see his 'thugness' hit the road. Now, the Michigan Republican party needs to connect the dots between hizzoner and Barack Hussein Obama.
Maybe I'll send that link to them.
