Today's Web poll on Time.com asks "Should gas and heating oil be rationed until prices come down?"
It's a non-scientific Web poll of course, so in some sense it's just mindless, fluffy filler. But on the other hand, including this only serves to further the MSM's fear-mongering about the economy while banging its left-wing drum beat about oil and gas prices.

Since taking that second screencap earlier today, more votes have been cast by readers, with the numbers shifting slightly in favor of gas rationing to 39 percent of respondents.

I wasn't even born during
June 4, 2008 - 12:14 ET by taterI wasn't born during the Carter years but even I know that's a stupid idea. The 37% must have been born in the 80s.

Not to mention gas prices
June 4, 2008 - 12:17 ET by Ken ShepherdNot to mention gas prices already serve a rationing function. People drive less with higher prices. If government set an artificially low price but also issued ration cards to consumers, you'd have a run on gas stations, gas lines, and a helluva lot of fraud, graft, corruption, and black market gasoline sales.
There's no sense in rationing unless there's a natural disaster which so adversely impacts supply that what remains must be rationed in order to enable the government and industry to restore infrastructure to the point that supply can be expanded.
What we have now is not such a situation but rather a government-imposed ceiling on supply (no drilling in ANWR, federal moratorium on offshore, etc.).
I Remember the 1970s
June 4, 2008 - 12:27 ET by GothampcNot to mention how it will hurt small business owners. I remember in the 70s that stations would pump until they went dry. Then some had to close for a day or two until they got the next delivery in.
Besides, rationing doesn't mean conservation. People in the 70s were nervous and where they might only buy 1/4 of a tank, they would fill the tank because they never knew when the next fill-up would be. So they were actually pumping more gas based on fear.
Weren't alive during the Carter years?
June 5, 2008 - 15:46 ET by YahooWatcherAw man, you missed some good stuff. Aside from gas lines you had 20% mortgage rates to go with sky-high unemployment and inflation. You had hostages in Iran for a third of Jimma's presidency. Then Jimma laid the ground work for the ass backward environmental policies that are screwing us today, mainly the shutdown of domestic drilling. But most importantly, you had this:

Been There, Done That, Got The Tshirt
June 4, 2008 - 12:14 ET by GothampcWe already tried that when Carter was POTUS. It didn't work too well. The only people it benefited were the makers of gas cap locks.
Gas cap locks were in high
June 4, 2008 - 13:11 ET by bassndudeGas cap locks were in high demand back then. I was in Germany during most of Carters years, but I remember reading the paper and seeing pictures of lines in gas stations and reading about fist fights breaking out in the lines. Being from Oklahoma, everybody was employed, most in the oil and gas businesses. I myself was making money hand over fist as a welder. Life was good. But I know other states were in deep trouble. If and when Obama gets in office, I look for the same missteps as Carter made. Carter will be able to point to Obama and say "See! I am not the worst President, ever. He is!"

Dumb Idea!
June 4, 2008 - 12:20 ET by MeanderingDoes any kind of rationing make any sense at all? Food, gas it doesn't matter, its bad news. Its stupid and the people that voted yes for this are even stoopider! What's next rationing how far we can drive in a day or what the temperature of our homes are? Wait ... didn't Obama already say this?
Let's ration the Liberal

What possible reason for
June 4, 2008 - 12:30 ET by SnappyWhat possible reason for rationing would there be? Are gas stations and fuel companies running out of oil?
I know, lets limit an already overpriced commodity, that will fix the price.........
Unbeleivable.
Possible reason... TO

TO SAVE THE EARTH.
Or something like that.
"Abstain from McCain"
rationing will be required
June 4, 2008 - 14:48 ET by wizardjrThe hidden context of that poll is that the price will be artificially set to some lower than market value. To keep people from hoarding or over-using, we'll have to ration. If the government does not subsidize the lower prices then the suppliers will hold back their product which will force rationing as the supplies dry up (a la Jimmy Carter fiasco). Either way we're screwed.
Economics Should be Required in Journalism School
June 4, 2008 - 12:37 ET by jessep28I agree this won't work. On a fundamental level, you are artificially reducing demand, which may bring prices down. However, when that quota is removed, then demand is likely to go back up to natural market levels, increasing prices.
Another thing to consider is that OPEC as a cartel has a vested interest in keeping prices at a level they deem fit. So, if prices do fall, then OPEC, which is enjoying $100+/barrel oil, will probably curtail supply due to decreased US demand, that is if China and India don't take up the extra slack.
In short: Dumb idea.

June 4, 2008 - 13:14 ET by KillgraveWait a minute... what do they mean by "rationing" heating oil? I thought the libs pushed the notion that access to cheap heating oil should be a constitutional right.

Gas
June 4, 2008 - 16:28 ET by hopkinsd7I don't see how rationing would make the price come down? And who hoards gasoline??
whatever...GO WINGS!!!!!
most people hoarded gasoline
June 4, 2008 - 17:35 ET by wizardjrPerhaps you weren't there for the '70s. One of the reasons for the long gas lines and stations running out is that people paniced and changed their buying habits. They started filling up every time they got near a station. They siphoned the gas off into cans stored at home. Etc., etc., etc. There were tens of thousands of gallons of gasoline being stored all over the country that would have never been bought if not for the panic. In our scenario, it would be caused by the artificial low price dictated by the government. People would over-buy just to get the maximum of discounted fuel and store up for the return of 'normal' pricing.
Sure, let's ration it. Well
June 4, 2008 - 19:41 ET by NonanonSure, let's ration it. Well a better description would be to not let liberals have or use any. After all, they are the ones who keep preaching how evil using energy is. If they are really serious (LOL), they should be eager to give up using energy until the price comes down. They are the ones responsible for the high cost of energy anyway. They need to unshackle oil companies and allow them to drill and refine the energy needed to cover the new needs that are created everyday. I'll not hold my breath over this, but it is somewhat fun to dream.
Finally!! a solution I can
June 4, 2008 - 20:22 ET by SnappyFinally!! a solution I can get behind. All the far left and AGW fanatics can show us how to conserve by being put on a rationing schedule. Once the rest of us see how well they are doing and how the climate is being corrected back to the globally established "Norm" then the rest of us will have the option to voluntarily give up our cars, electricity basically all the trappings of a modern society then we will show those evil oil companies!!!
I think that the USA Today
June 5, 2008 - 00:52 ET by jdhawkI think that the USA Today is on to something.
Hey, let's ration taxes until they come down!!!
What should be rationed is
June 5, 2008 - 16:01 ET by bigtimerWhat should be rationed is the pay for some of the US Senate for causing this all in the first place, along with a couple ex Presidents, Carter and Clinton.
I want to thank McCain for leading the way for the RINO's to vote against drilling in '05...we lost by ONE vote...
All of them should be held accountable.
