You know the drill. An elected Democrat gets in trouble with the law, and the party label might as well be in the witness protection program when it comes to some reporters at the AP. Now, in this particular case the infraction is minor --a traffic violation bearing a $75 fine -- but all the same writer Carla K. Johnson left out a Chicago congressman's party label in her November 23 story:
CHICAGO (AP) — An Illinois congressman said he was a victim of racial profiling when police gave him a traffic ticket alleging he swerved over the center line.
U.S. Rep. Danny Davis, who is black, said he will go to traffic court to challenge the $75 ticket given to him early Monday by two white officers.
"I'm not one of these people who cry racism," Davis told The Associated Press on Friday. "I'm a person who believes in hard work and follows the rules."
Yet oddly enough a November 22 blurb by the AP announced Davis's party affiliation in the lead paragraph. Likewise, Davis's hometown paper, the Chicago Tribune, mentioned his party affiliation in the second paragraph of a November 22 story.

Are they getting so
November 24, 2007 - 02:55 ET by Right2thePointAre they getting so desperate they have to play the race card for trivia?
Sounds like they are jealous of the Flying Imans stealing their gig.
Next we will hear about the noose hanging on the rear view mirror of a car that passed by the traffic stop that slowed down to gawk at the perp.

yawn....... next!
"It's a racial thing, I'm tellin' you! Take this pool table, for example. In the end, it's the white ball that knocks the black ball into the hole." *

Dem.Rep Davis / and racial profiling
November 24, 2007 - 22:47 ET by merlin61You are a State Representative. That does not mean you are above the law. Pay the flippin
ticket!!!! Everyone else pays, you're no better
than anyone else, but you will claim
discrimination, and get away with it.
Crossing the white line...

And just what color was that line? Did he cross... a white line?
Well then! It's obviously a police state racially motivated assault on a poor swerving Congressman-American...who is black.
Reminds me of macaca-gate.

Does Mr. Davis (D-IL) not see the incongruity there?
I can empathize with him.
November 24, 2007 - 08:42 ET by JerryI can empathize with him. I am not one to say bad things about dirty, rotten, stinking, filthly, lazy, unpatriotic, commie liberals.
When asked if he went to war with Iraq to derail the impeachment vote: “I don’t think any serious person would believe that any President would do such a thing." - President Clinton (Dec 1998).

Would`nt surprise me in the least if pool is deemed a racist game. Some college prof has already said chess is a racist game because the white pieces get to move first.
pants on fire
November 24, 2007 - 13:38 ET by CatherwoodIf he really works hard and follows the rules, he'd stop moaning and crying and pay the fine. For whimps there is always an excuse and it's always somebody else who deserves the blame.
Let me try it: the only reason Danny was elected was because he is black.
Setting aside the question
November 25, 2007 - 01:40 ET by JerSetting aside the question of race, and addressing the pertinent issue of party identification by the media, my experience is that the practice is somewhat capricious and inconclusive.
Somtimes the party affiliation is revealed and sometimes not, and it makes little difference if the subject is a Democrat or Republican, or if the reporting entity is liberal, conservative, or independent. If the person is a national political figure, his or her party affiliation will almost certainly be disclosed. On the state and local level, it is less clear cut.
In the present case, some media outlets noted Davis was a Democrat. Others didn't. The New York Times for example prominently displayed his party status.
I know this issue has been a recurring topic here. But I have yet to see convincing evidence of a discernible pattern of bias.
