MSNBC, an increasingly left-leaning network, has bought out online news site Newsvine.com, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer's Web site reported Sunday evening.:
MSNBC Interactive News, a Microsoft and NBC Universal joint venture with 27.3 million Web visitors in August, announced Sunday night that it has purchased Newsvine in a deal of undisclosed size. It is the first acquisition in MSNBC.com's 11-year history, one that President Charlie Tillinghast hopes will lead to additional news-sharing features on MSNBC and tap an audience of highly engaged news readers.
Newsvine will continue to operate as a separate business unit and brand under the direction of Davidson, with the team remaining in its Seattle offices.
Though Newsvine will operate autonomously, Tillinghast said MSNBC will benefit from technological innovations and community features that Newsvine brings to the table. Meanwhile, Davidson said Newsvine will use MSNBC's technological resources, advertising capabilities and marketing muscle. For example, MSNBC could place a button on the bottom of stories to drive traffic to Newsvine -- a service that The New York Times introduced late last year.
While its Web site touts itself as "an instant reflection of what the world is talking about at any given moment," Newsvine, like other news bookmarking sites, is potentially prone to spamming and gaming by political partisans with lots of time on their hands.
Conservatives have often complained about Newsvine competitor Digg.com, arguing problems with liberal spammers voting down conservative content. Supporters of libertarian Republican presidential aspirant Ron Paul have also been accused of gaming Digg.
For its part, Newsvine insists one major benefit of being bought out by MSNBC will be increased diversity, although a greater breadth of diversity in political opinion is not specifically mentioned as an objective:
So What Does It All Mean For You?
So many good things! Following is a list of things you can look forward to:
[...]
A bigger, more diverse community. Msnbc.com's user base is spread across the world in every age, income, and demographic group. You'd be hard pressed to find a town in the United States which doesn't count some of its residents as readers. It is our hope that eventually, readers of both Newsvine and msnbc.com will be able to jump from site to site and share in the benefits that each destination offers.

October 8, 2007 - 13:18 ET by bigtimerI do not know whose brilliant idea this was but the condition that msnbc seems to be in for ratings, this seems to be the last thing I would be worried about investing in at the moment.
I would invest in firing at least 3/4 of the talking heads adn writers/producers, Dan Abrams and his ilk behind the scenes and try to attempt to have a Jerry Knackman (sp) style of network, before he fell ill and died, he had that station on a good start IMHO...that was long ago now.
Oh well...I realize I do not understand the complete art of spamming/gaming and all that good stuff on the internet, I do to a point sice I signed up with digg awhile back and also see what Youtube does at times.
Just my two cents.

Nerds with free time
October 8, 2007 - 15:07 ET by third eyeWhat does Newsvine do for MSNBC?
It allows them to justify burying positive news aganist ideological opponents, ie conservatives. The novel excuse will be "Well we know no one is interested in a William Jefferson indictement, Newsvine readers voted 200-1 to have it buried." Suddenly Ron Paul will be the leading Republican "Because, Newsvine readers support him 3000-2." Its what already goes on in the MSM, but now its just more inclusive of nerds with free time.

October 8, 2007 - 15:26 ET by bigtimerThanks third eye...
What I wonder about though is how are they going to be able to bury stories that are important if the other networks are reporting them...no matter what leftists bury what...they will still have to report some of the truth won't they?
I know that is about all they do now...some of the truth...lol.
They can have the Ron Paul bank of people block out whatever they want just like their phone bank does every chance they get in the mornings on the Washington Journal, it will not make the fact that he is still barely registering with the majority of people obsolete will it? How could it? Especially if others are reporting the story...
I am just curious if I am following you with a so-called main network such as it is.
The opinion of a few..
October 8, 2007 - 15:59 ET by third eyeThis doesnt actually change anything for MSNBC, theyll still be full of slanted articles from Slate and Newsweek. MSNBC will still cover the exact same talking points as CBS et al. However, when groups like the MRC attempt to engage them in discussion on a particular topic, this will be the first excuse given. This is what the public wants! Their goal is to get people (the more the better) to react spontaneously on sheer emotion aganist any competitor to their ideology by inviting them to participate in the process of censorship.
