If you're a soldier serving in Iraq and have a downbeat view of the troop surge, Time's Joe Klein is itching to have the Left adopt you as a poster boy. But should you be a soldier in Iraq and you think the surge is working, well, obviously you're just a tool of those vile neocons at The Weekly Standard, willing to "trash" fellow soldiers.:
Well, I suppose it was inevitable that the Weekly Standard would figure out some way to trash the 7 enlisted men from the 82nd Airborne, who wrote the courageous Op-Ed piece about the unreliability of our Iraqi allies in the New York Times last Sunday. At least the piece is written by other Iraq war vets and the tone is respectful...although the neocons continue to try to use Anbar, an all-Sunni province, as an avatar of what will happen in the rest of Iraq, which is utter nonsense.
But where on earth are the Democratic politicians on this? Why haven't they embraced the grunts from the 82nd the way the Republicans have embraced the "liberal" Brookings scholars? It's just very frustrating and truly outrageous.
Let's rewind a bit. Klein insists that the Weekly Standard is attempting to "trash" the 82nd Airborne soldiers, but then backpedals and says the tone was "respectful." Yet a cursory read of the Standard piece shows anything but malice or loathing for the decidedly anti-surge position of the 82nd Airborne soldiers (emphasis mine):
We understand the frustration our fellow soldiers feel. All of us were in Iraq before the "surge" and lament never seeing a coherent, security-based counterinsurgency strategy. In truth, we were only clearing--not holding.
But we also know what's possible when even small portions of counterinsurgency strategy are applied. Insurgents are exposed, leaders stand up, and stability occurs. General David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker understand the principles of counterinsurgency and are applying them up and down the chain of command. It's unfortunate that soldiers in the 82nd Airborne have not yet benefited from the new strategy, but it will ensure that their actions, and those of their fallen brethren, will not have been in vain.
Meanwhile, we applaud our brothers in the 82nd Airborne for their courage under fire, thank them for their commitment to our nation, and pray for the recovery of their injured co-author.
Oh, and one other teeny tiny thing Klein failed to mention. According to the Standard, the pro-surge soldiers' op-ed was submitted to, but rejected by the Left's newspaper of record:
David Bellavia, Pete Hegseth, Michael Baumann, Carl Hartmann, David Thul, Knox Nunnally, and Joe Dan Worley all served with either the Army or Marine Corps in Iraq, and are all members of Vets for Freedom. This Op-Ed was originally submitted to the New York Times, which declined to publish it.

Where are they ?
August 24, 2007 - 16:56 ET by JayTeeKlien asks "But where on earth are the Democratic politicians on this?"
Well Mr. Klien, they get elected and fired by voters....and I imagine you can find them changing the subject from "Surge" to "Maliki"....so they can keep their jobs.
YOU need to re-tool your message, your Agenda is out of Sync with Dems. You guys need to get Co-Ordinated on this again....I think you lost control...Klien is getting lonely....
IF a Tree Surge falls on an Anti-War Journalist in the Woods, will the Democrats be near enough to hear him Scream ?

I was highly amused when I
August 24, 2007 - 17:55 ET by BDI was highly amused when I read the passage "who wrote the courageous Op-Ed piece about the unreliability of our Iraqi allies in the New York Time".
Would the left have considered it courageous for any of our soldiers to have written a piece regarding the French unreliability in WWII, Indo-China, Algeria, The First Gulf War, The Cold War, and especially the Balkans in the 90's.??????
I am waiting for that particular article to appear in Time.
Oh, and one other teeny

How predictable these clowns are, ethics anyone,,,,,no I thought not, good grief?
It just kills the liberals...
August 24, 2007 - 21:00 ET by c5thenThere are very good and numerous reasons why the majority of those serving and having served in the armed forces are conservative in their politics.
The day that "politician" became a career choice is the day we started losing the Republic
Typical Left Wing
August 24, 2007 - 22:58 ET by pbthinkerIt's typical, of the left, to make comments about an magazine article that few will even bother to check out. Klein has been doing this for years and getting away with it. Hell, he has his bona fides, he's a semi-regular guest on Chris Matthews show, and you know he'll never get questioned there since they won't have a Conservative, who would actually read the Weekly Standard, on that show, much too knowledgeable for Chrissy.
AS far as the NY Times, not printing the other commentary, if it doesn't fit their template, it won't see the light of day.
Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
Magazine
August 25, 2007 - 22:45 ET by Jerry MackThe majority of people that read Joe Kleins articles are the people stuck in Doctors and Dentist waiting rooms.
JM....and after reading the Time magazine in the Doc's office
August 26, 2007 - 14:17 ET by JayTeeFurther Treatement by the Doctor is needed......but the toothache goes away, and is replace by a churning stomach ache.
Also Laughing Gas may not be needed after reading Klien.
