I'm no expert on firearms or anything, but I'm pretty sure spent ammunition doesn't look shiny and pristine. So why did the AFP (and Yahoo!, which syndicated the photo) swallow that notion hook, line, and sinker?

Either way, they are unspent cartridges. And with as much terrorist and military operations in Iraq as they have it is not unreasonable to assume that someone may have accidentally dropped/spilled a few rounds out of a container or pocket.

August 15, 2007 - 15:40 ET by conantAlmost assuredly those rounds are new unfired and live. It is possible that they are inert dummy rounds but I doubt that's very likely in a war zone. To my eyes they appear to be NATO 5.56X45 (.223 Rem) as used in our M-16. The other possibility is they could be 5.45x39 rounds which is the Russian answer to our 5.56 round and chambered into the AK-74 and updated version of the old AK-47. I don't think so because of the short necks. They are clearly not 7.62X39 rounds. Either way it is certain nobody shot her house or anything else with them.
