Time.com's Cox: Even Terrorist Suspects Deserve a Good Night's Rest

Here's another item for the "Bush Won't Win Praise in the Media By Going Soft on Gitmo" file.

It was posted on Friday, pre-presidential colonoscopy (hence the snark about the Cheney administration), but I just came across it today.

In "Bush's Anti-Torture Executive Order! Uhm, Not So Fast," Time.com Washington editor Ana Marie Cox laments that the new Bush administration interrogation directives for Gitmo detainees will still allow sleep deprivation (emphasis mine):

Just got off a conference call with a "senior administration official" about the President's signing of an executive order related to the 2006 Military Commissions Act. The good news: We don't torture! The bad news: As to what torture is, as to how violators will be punished, as to whether or not torture ever took place, well, you'll have to take their word for it.
[...]

-- Though the executive order says all detainees should be provided with "basic human needs," "sleep" is not included. According to the SAO, "Sleep is not traditionally innumerated in the Geneva Convention." How quaint.

-- The SAO refused to discuss how the order may affect the CIA's current practices or if current practices provided the impetus for the order.
-- There is no specific enforcement mechanism for the order, except for the CIA. Which has done a great job so far -- as far as we know!
-- There is no guaranteed access for representatives of the Red Cross.
-- Of course everyone the CIA detains is a terrorist. Silly question.

Happy Cheney administration, everyone! Sleep well... while you can!

How dare we deprive an enemy of getting their ZZZZZZZZ's.

All they need is a teddy bear, a warm glass of milk, and a hug good night.  Then they'll see the error of their ways, and stop being terrorists.  Right, Ann Marie?

I'm curious. Exactly what

I'm curious.

Exactly what coercive interrogation techniques do liberals think are acceptable?

Any?

Asking pretty please with sugar on top?

Really. I'd love to get an answer on this from our resident dissidents.

I suppose if the terrorists

I suppose if the terrorists were Mirandized when the surrendered and had a lawyer present to protect their civil rights as American citizens... oh, right.

My question is this: why are people so concerned about terrorists' rights, when the terrorists had no concern whatsoever about the rights of the people in the WTC or the Pentagon?

I hope

Ana Marie Cox loses a lot of sleep over this. I know I won't.

What's your sleep number?

Maybe we should buy them all the Sleep Number bed. You know the one, where the individual terrorist can dial his preferred 'sleep number' firmness for a good night's sleep?

How long would it be before a rumor started, and Ms. Cox investigated, that the pentagon ordered all Sleep Number beds be set at 35 whether they liked it or not!

Scandal!!!

Perhaps Time magazine knows what we do not?

Perhaps Time magazine knows what is coming but we do not? This week's issue shows on its cover a helicopter lifting the letter "A" out of the word Iraq. The only thing missing is an embassy roof and people falling to their deaths from a dangling rope ladder. I'm sure this is their plan of how we should declare victory then leave Iraq with pride of accomplishment. "Just repeat Vietnam!". The template is there ready to be dusted off and used again as the left has been telling us is correct for every military situation we have faced since 1975. Simple and proven. They believe no one dies (as long as you don't count the million plus "locals") and we go hide. Of course the problem this time, unlike 1975, is "hide where?"

What might Time magazine know of what is coming that we do not? The helicopter lifting the letter "A" is not one of ours! It is a Russian Mi-24 gunship. As a poorly designed, slow moving troop transport aircraft that is a "gunship" in name only, it's widely considered to be the Russian aircraft that lost Afghanistan.

I'm sure this was lack of knowledge of the article's writers ("How To Leave Iraq") or do they somehow know the Russians will be picking up the pieces? Not likely. Just another case of all emotion/no knowledge of those we called "Peaceniks" in the 60's now turned gray and thinking of themselves as wise and all knowing. Great in number unfortunately but lacking in any military knowledge. Then and again now. In fact, disdaining anyone on "our side" who did or does have any such knowledge. Any plan beyond "just leave" exceeds their intelligence on a subject that will mean life or death to hundreds of thousands of people. Why didn't their magazine cover instead read "Just Leave" then include blank pages to detail their "well thought out" plan of surrender?

Sadly, "they" have won and now it's just a matter of time (no pun intended). But the all important question this time is, I repeat, "hide WHERE?". Why did so many trust America again with their lives after watching America let millions die in the 70's as we abandoned those who fought for their freedom from ruthless tyrants? Whatever the reason, we are about to repeat our abandonment of an entire civilization to the barbarism of the 14th century. Except, this time, the loss of life will be many times of what it was 30 years ago and the battle will simply move to our shores. WE will be among those we abandon to their (and our) fate. We will only need to look amongst us to see those who abandoned us. Perhaps the two "A's" in AMERICA will also be lifted to "safety" by another Russian gunship on a future Time magazine cover? If only it was that easy.

wOtm, I posted on this

wOtm,

I posted on this glaring inconsistency this weekend.

The Soviet Hind lifting the star spangled "A" out of Iraq (in the Time Rag graphic)  just shows a complete ignorance, or lack of caring about their readership, on the part of the MsM.

They just feel we're too stupid to notice their intellectual so-called superiority.  LOL!  As if!

Time Rag is already an ash on the bonfire of our culture.  They're just too stupid to fall over yet.

My apologies

Blonde -

Sorry, I didn't see your post. I did read through what had been posted thinking someone else might have caught it but I obviously missed yours. Sorry to appear to have take "credit" for what you noticed and posted first. Not intentional. I've read your posts in the past and you always post with intelligence and tact. Sadly lacking on most blogs. Fortunately, Newsbusters is not the "normal" blog. We have somewhere to comment and discuss that doesn't end in mindless name-calling.

You're right. To the Time writers and anyone else involved in the article, I'm sure this error means nothing to them as "it's the message that counts". They are right in that regard except you and I see a different message than they do. Theirs is one of total ignorance that can and will get people killed and is already doing so.

But, to them, their intentions are "honorable" so "the end justifies the means". I don't know if you read the article but if many millions of voters weren't already brainwashed into what was written, it would simply be nonsense written by idiots. But the article reflects the beliefs of millions. They are leading us down the path to ultimate destruction. But, no matter what happens, even though they are to blame, they will blame everyone BUT themselves.

A year ago, I made the mistake of responding to someone on DailyKOS who wrote "9/11 would never have happened if we hadn't invaded Iraq". My brief clarification of history that "9/11" was 9/11/2001 and we invaded Iraq in 2003 only brought forth inane and caustic comments from hundreds of unthinking zombies that now make up the cornerstone of the left. As obvious as all this is to you and to me, it is not obvious to many millions and there is no way to get through to these people. The future does not look good. Hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Take care.
