Frank Rich of the NYT has a piece titled "The Bigot's Last Hurrah" where he names all the usual conservative suspects who are against gay marriage.
Rich blasts religious conservatives like Rick Warren, Glenn Beck, and Sarah Palin and their 'dismissive' views regarding gay marriage. He sees their "softening" on the issue as something new, when in reality it has always been their view to not alienate or condemn gays while at the same time being against gay marriage. He did forget one "bigot" though.
Pres. Barack Obama.
Pres. Barack Obama, like most of us conservatives (myself included), has said that he supports civil unions but is against gay marriage. In an interview with the Chicago Daily Tribune, Obama said. "I'm a Christian. And so, although I try not to have my religious beliefs dominate or determine my political views on this issue, I do believe that tradition, and my religious beliefs say that marriage is something sanctified between a man and a woman."
Just exactly how is that different from what Rick Warren believes?
It isn't different. Rich is just a prime example of the growing hypocrisy of the left.
Another "bigot" he fails to mention? Hillary Clinton. Hillary was quoted in The New York Daily News as saying, "Marriage has got historic, religious and moral content that goes back to the beginning of time, and I think a marriage is as marriage always has been, between a man and a woman."
Rich believes that the case against "equal rights for gay families" is getting more and more difficult to argue on "nonreligious" grounds. He might ask Pres. Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton why they continue to argue it from that perspective then.
Could it be that he doesn't think that Pres. Obama or Hillary Clinton are being honest with us about their views? Or do they just get a pass because they are Democrats?
There is one group Rich ignores as well. 70% of blacks backed Prop. 8 against gay marriage in California. I would like to ask Frank Rich if they are "bigoted" as well? If so, then why put all the blame on Republicans and not mention them?
I think we all know the answer to that question.

Who cares what Frank Rich

This coup has gone on long enough. The time to put it down is NOW.
Obama a Christian?...hm.
April 20, 2009 - 13:40 ET by dborschjr68The funny thing is, he could easily have said, "I am a Muslim.", and his beliefs would have been the same regarding queer marriage.
But no, it wouldn't do to mention that he is a Muslim. Better play it safe and say Christian. For now, anyways.
Just an observation...

It's interesting how every lib issue conservatives disagree with they cannot accept, yet they blame us for any of ours they do not agree with.

You're right..
April 20, 2009 - 13:50 ET by Kathleen McKinleyThat reads wrong. Is it better now?
This isn't anything new.
April 20, 2009 - 13:59 ET by StewMcKinThis isn't anything new. Anyone who paid any attention during the election season should know Obama's views on the subject.
~" Anyone who paid any attention during the election season"
April 20, 2009 - 14:14 ET by choselife3xSigh. If only. Seriously, watch the video if you want to see how much the average person was paying attention. Let me know what you think.
Well I suppose I could have
April 20, 2009 - 14:34 ET by StewMcKinWell I suppose I could have stood out on a busy street corner jumping up and down with a sign proclaiming each candidate's positions - but then again that's not my job. My job, as is yours, is to inform myself so I can make an educated vote.
~"but then again that's not my job"
April 20, 2009 - 14:38 ET by choselife3xI wan't saying that it was, just pointing out that Obama's postions are not as well known as one might think.
I disagree. There were
April 20, 2009 - 14:47 ET by StewMcKinI disagree. There were (and still are) a number of sites and resources readily available with such information. You can't force people to do their research. Some people will believe what they want to believe. Look at that lady who called Obama an Arab in McCain's town hall.
The sad truth is people are just dumb. After 18 you really can't force education on anyone.

April 20, 2009 - 17:35 ET by choselife3xYeah, Allah only knows where she got that from.
So you like jazz, huh?
That high-pitched scream you hear is the troll under my heel.
Oof - yeah, you could
April 20, 2009 - 17:51 ET by StewMcKinOof - yeah, you could probably find a few of my gaffes scattered across the internet too. Of course I'd have a hard time believing that lady did her research, only to stumble upon this video. Besides, whether you like him or not, do you honestly think he's a secret Muslim playing the world's biggest "gotcha" on the public? Regardless, that's one of the reasons why America is so great - our freedom to believe and practice whichever religion we desire.
On a side note, I love jazz, but I'm not Stew McKinsey. I never did quite get the bass - I'm partial to the guitar.
my personal opinion
April 20, 2009 - 17:56 ET by candanceI don't think Obama is secretly plotting to spread Islam across America. I think he believes whatever he needs to believe as a politician.
I think he believes whatever
April 20, 2009 - 18:10 ET by StewMcKinI think he believes whatever he needs to believe as a politician.
That might be the wisest remark I have yet to see here, and I consider myself to be a genius. My compliments to you.
~I didn't think
April 20, 2009 - 18:18 ET by choselife3xHe believed in anything higher than himself, but the bow to the Saudi king gave me pause. I would say that he respects Islam more than he does other religions. In a US President, I find that alarming.
That high-pitched scream you hear is the troll under my heel.
Hey, I'd expect him to bow
April 20, 2009 - 19:13 ET by StewMcKinHey, I'd expect him to bow to the Dalai Lama too. If that's what is traditionally expected as a show of respect for another nation's leader, I can hardly place blame. (side note - before everyone jumps, I know the Dalai Lama is not the leader of a nation) The Saudis are hardly worth pissing off. Bush held hands with Prince Abdullah as a similar show of respect. I credit him with for that as well.
~Actually
April 20, 2009 - 21:42 ET by choselife3xIt is NOT expected.
Bowing to other human beings is frowned upon in Muslim cultures as all
human beings are considered equal and bowing is only supposed to be
done to God in Islam.
That high-pitched scream you hear is the troll under my heel.
Naughty you. You know
April 21, 2009 - 11:50 ET by StewMcKinNaughty you. You know better than to cite wikipedia as a source for valid information:

Was it a bow? Sure looks like it. Should Obama have been more informed before doing this salute? Yes. Did he do it as a show of respect to one of our biggest Middle Eastern allies? Absolutely. He also gave Queen E an iPod. He's certainly not going to get everything right.

April 21, 2009 - 12:07 ET by StewMcKinOh I'm aware. There are quite a few resources online that say the same thing. I'm just scolding you for using Wikipedia as your cite. ;)
If nothing else, this proves one thing - if Obama is a secret Muslim, he would have known NOT to bow.
~He is familiar with Muslim customs
April 21, 2009 - 12:13 ET by choselife3xWhich means he knew what he was communicating with that bow.
That high-pitched scream you hear is the troll under my heel.
given a pass?
April 20, 2009 - 17:48 ET by candanceI don't think this is about giving Democrats an obvious pass. I think they agree with Bill Maher's assumption that Obama doesn't really mean it anyway.
After all this is the same Obama who used the Sermon on the Mount to extoll us to be kind to gays (?), and now since moving to DC has yet to join a church there. Somehow I don't think sending one of my servants to meet a pastor and report back to me is quite the way to go about the search.
