'View's' Shepherd: GOP Candidates Never Thought About Black on Black Crime

Photo of Justin McCarthy.

NewsBusters.org - Media Research CenterDo none of the Republican presidential candidates, including the former mayor of New York City, care about crime in the African-American community? According to "The View’s" Sherri Shepherd, they do not. Joy Behar says those encouraging a more stable family structure are "mental midgets" because they will not discuss racism.

On discussing the Republican YouTube debate, Joy Behar said she was "slightly annoyed" that Mitt Romney stated a large factor in black on black crime are unstable families, and that he did not address racism. Sherri Shepherd scoffed that "not one of these candidates ever thought about black on black crime."

Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg also exclaimed why no one ever asks about "white on white crime." Joy Behar did concede that Rudy Giuliani dramatically reduced black on black crime in New York City, but questioned "the way he did it." Sherri Shepherd responded "because one of my cousins called me from jail."

The entire transcript is below.

JOY BEHAR: Romney, there was a YouTube moment of this African-American man with, I think it was his son. And do we have that clip by any chance? Because that was interesting because-

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: We do.

BEHAR: Yes, we do. Can we show that? Is it possible or not?

GOLDBERG: Yeah.

BEHAR: Yes?

GOLDBERG: They’ll get it together.

UNIDENTIFIED MAN: We are from Atlanta

UNIDENTIFIED BOY: I want to ask you guys a question. I notice you spent billions of dollars on the war in Iraq every year. But what about the war going on in our country, black on black crime? 200 to 400 black men die yearly in one city alone. What are you going to do about that war? It feels like the Taliban is right outside.

FORMER MASSACHUSETTS GOVERNOR MITT ROMNEY: Well, first of all, Francis is pretty fortunate because he’s got a dad standing next to him that apparently loves him by all appearances there. That’s probably the best thing you can do for a kid is have a mom and a dad. [applause] It’s time in this country that we go back to the kind of values that allow kids to have moms and dads. In the African American community today, 68 percent of kids born are born out of wedlock. And so we’re going to try, once again to reinculcate in this country a kind of values that have made us strong, family values. Secondly-

ANDERSON COOPER: The question is what are you going to do about the war in the inner city?

ROMNEY: Well, one, about the war in the inner city, number one, is to get more moms and dads, that’s number one. And thank heavens Bill Cosby said it like it was. That’s where the root of crime starts.

BEHAR: Okay, so the question is what about black on black crime, and then Romney answered it in that way. I’m curious what everybody thought because I was slightly annoyed with him for that.

SHERRI SHEPHERD: Well, why were you annoyed?

BEHAR: Well, I was annoyed first of all there’s no discussion of racism in this society. It’s always about that. So that annoyed me in the first place. I mean, these people are mental midgets. They have no ability to look at the large picture of the country, and where were coming from. So it becomes all about your parents. Okay, your parents are responsible, but there are other factors that are implicated and indicated in black on black crime. It has to do with unemployment, it has to do with all sorts of factors.

GOLDBERG: Why would you ask him about black on black crime?

BEHAR: And to quote Bill Cosby-

SHEPHERD: But I think, I think it was a very- I think that not one of those candidates ever thought about black on black crime. I don’t think it was on their agenda. I think every single one of those candidates would have pulled Bill Cosby’s name from the top of their head, because he was the one that everybody just gravitates to.

BEHAR: And what did Bill Cosby say, do you know?

SHEPHERD: He was talking about parenting being one of the reasons-

BEHAR: It is one of the reasons.

SHEPHERD: One of the reasons why there’s a lot of crime.

BEHAR: But when you’re talking about white on white crime, do you say it’s about parenting as much? I don’t think that even comes up.

GOLDBERG: I know, well, you know, when you talk about white on white crime you are talking about parents, father and mother, who beat their child to death. They don’t talk about that as being a parenting issue.

BEHAR: Exactly!

GOLDBERG: So, but here’s my question. You know, this is not the, these are not the guys to answer the question. These are not the guys who come into the neighborhoods. They don’t know. Will this question be asked of Osama? Not Osama, Obama.

[laughter]

BEHAR: I did the same thing.

SHEPHERD: Osama?

BEHAR: You know what? It’s the name, but come on.

GOLDBERG: Yeah, I made a mistake. Go ahead and kick my butt.

[laughter]

BEHAR: Yeah, but it’s an easy mistake.

GOLDBERG: And, and, I apologize. But do you think they’ll ask him the question? Do you think anybody will ask him the question about black on black crime?

BEHAR: They might.

GOLDBERG: How come we never asked white people about white on white crime?

BEHAR: That’s what I’m saying. I came up because-

GOLDBERG: I’m asking you.

SHEPHERD: What would you do about white on white crime?

BEHAR: I mean, I don’t know the answers to these questions. I’m not here to say that I have the answers. I’m saying that these people are running for president, and they don’t have-

SHEPHERD: I don’t think they care.

BEHAR: -they don’t have- they don’t care and they don’t have-

GOLDBERG: They don’t have an answer.

BEHAR: I mean, Giuliani, to his credit, did do something about crime in New York City. But whatever the way he did it, that’s a whole other conversation.

GOLDBERG: I know the way he did it.

BEHAR: Tell them how.

GOLDBERG: You know-

GLORIA ESTEFAN: How did he do it by the way?

BEHAR: Well, he claims that he cut black on black crime by 80 percent in African-American neighborhoods. He claims that. That is one of the things that he claims.

SHEPHERD: Yeah because one of my cousins called me from jail

[laughter]

GOLDBERG: A lot of folks went to jail. But here’s the issue, you know, when you’re talking about those kind of issues, are those the guys to ask? It’s kind of a tough question for him.

SHEPHERD: Well, sure, if he wants to become president, yeah those are the guys to ask.

GOLDBERG: Why?

SHEPHERD: He wants to become our commander-in-chief. That’s a big deal.

Earth to Behar

Wild thought. No matter what color, religion, or ethnic background if kids dont have a strong foundation they will falter.Kids need parents not friends. They need someone to provide moral values and lead by example.

Behar just needs to rant.Since the writers strike she has to think on her own.You can actually see the smoke coming out of her ears on her weak arguments and accusations.

A COUPLE THINGS...

Whites who try to adress the issue of black on black crime are quickly called racist. John Gibson for 1, has been under fire for his heavy coverage of the murder rate in Philly, Baltimore, Jacksonville, New Oreleans & other major cities.

White on white crime is an issue, but black men are being murdered a shocking rate. Murder is not a major cause of death among whites, it is for blacks. That is why it needs to be adressed by all Americans, not just "Black Leadership".

Liberal Women

In reading the above, it sounds like the entire cast of chicas were stoned as what they chatter on about is incoherent.

They want a discussion "racism" and do no give one example of racism being a problem........but instead degenerate to black on black crime and complaining that Bill Cosby is incorrect in stating that the source is indeed lack of black parenting.
One can only speak of things they have experience, but I know a white girl in Ohio who was impregnated by a black male who has more kids with women than Solomon it seemed. He takes care of none of them and the US citizens foot the bills.

It is lack of parenting which is creating this situation and lack of parents who are telling their children they need to work hard to gain in life and not stand on street corners selling dope or thinking they are going to be the next Donovan McNabb.

None of that is race as all races have sloven groups who either are predators or sit around collecting welfare.

I would be embarassed if I was at ABC listening to these very ignorant liberal women, especially their last complaint that throwing criminals into prison is a problem.
If it is not, then I suggest Joy Behar post her address and invite all criminals to come to her home and New York City be the haven of all border busters and criminals paroled from prison.

I suggest Behar as Whoopie has a double barrel 12 gauge shotgun and would shoot them with her liberal buckshot.

Make that three times, just to make extra sure.

Any white politician that

Any white politician that tries to discuss troubles in the black community is usually labeled a "racist".  Therefore, the smart thing to do is just leave it alone.  Remember when Ross Perot simply said "you people"?  He was referring to the black community but the attack-dogs like Jackson and Sharpton "busted out" the "racism" card.  Even Bill Cosby, a black person since birth, has been called a "racist" when he talks about how screwed-up "urban culture" is.

BEHAR ... It's not about

BEHAR ... It's not about "black on black" crime ... It's about racism?

Exactly who the heck does she think commits the crimes (and killings/murders) against "blacks" in this country?  So, is this dolt suggesting blacks are racist in committing crimes against other "blacks" ... ?  Help me out here.

SHEPHERD ... I think that not one of those candidates ever thought about black on black crime.

And I thought I'd heard some really asinine remarks on this stupid show before.  Aside from the fact the many of the GOP candidates have been directly involved in city or state "governing", and efforts to reduce crime rates in said areas does she REALLY believe they are not aware of the statistics of "black on black" crime?

Oh, and let's not forget, IF either one of these GOP candidates DID make a major issue of "black on black" crime in their campaigns they would, undoubtedly, be accused of ... wait for it ... RACISM! for making "black" crime an issue in the first place.

You really do need a tight vice around your head to listen to these harpies.  They should stick to discussing panty shields ...

Hey, it's a "gotta-have"

Hey, it's a "gotta-have" item around here, and I'm willing to share!! LOL

The truly sad part is the

The truly sad part is the black community is nose diving out of control. No matter what you say, if you are black or white they call you racist. If you do well in school you are called acting too white. If you speak correct English you are acting too white. The world is so ass backwards. If my son did well in math I did not tell him that he is acting to Asian. If I corrected my daughters proper language,  I did not tell her that she was acting too English..

I looked upon it as it was my job to make them  better people. BECAUSE IT WAS!!!

I once shook my fist at my Mom after she yelled at me, my Dad spotted it. Well, all I can say is that it never happened again.

No matter what anyone believes the family needs a Father anda Mother.

You need a mothers love and nurturing, you also need a fathers love and discipline.

But no one can get past the noise “example Sherri Shepherd”

Joy Behar did concede that “Rudy Giuliani dramatically reduced black on black crime in New York City, but questioned "the way he did it." Sherri Shepherd responded "because one of my cousins called me from jail."

Leave it up to a black liberal to blame the Mayor of a city because there cousin was locked up..

Here is a new flash: try not to break the law.. then.. you..won’t.. go.. to.. jail..!!

I agree, bt. I swear if I hear one more "personality"  say it's time to have a dialogue about race, I'm gonna hurl.

Great article, Edhenry!

Great article. Jason Whitlock can say those things with impunity because he is black.

His outrage is palpable. I read a black man furious at seeing his brothers destroyed, and feeling helpless to do anything about it.

Some of his gems:

Let's cut through the bull(manure) and deal with reality. Black men are targets of black men. Period. Go check the coroner's office and talk with a police detective.

But we don't want to deal with ourselves. We take great joy in prescribing medicine to cure the hate in other people's hearts. Meanwhile, our self-hatred, on full display for the world to see, remains untreated, undiagnosed and unrepentant.

And here's the one I consider the "money quote" (emphasis added):

You're damn straight I blame hip hop for playing a role in the genocide of American black men. When your leading causes of death and dysfunction are murder, ignorance and incarceration, there's no reason to give a free pass to a culture that celebrates murder, ignorance and incarceration.

It's time for a dialogue on race.

But seriously folks, he's good, but I'm going to take him to task on this:

"But we don't want to deal with ourselves. We take great joy in
prescribing medicine to cure the hate in other people's hearts.
Meanwhile, our self-hatred, on full display for the world to see,
remains untreated, undiagnosed and unrepentant."

How about...

"We take great joy in
prescribing medicine to cure the perceived hate in other people's hearts.."

Or at least say "hate, or perceived hate..." (both)

I'm just nit-picking, sorry :p

Jason Whitlock is great. He

Jason Whitlock is great. He holds no punches, doesn't spout the tired excuses.

JASON WHITLOCK...

He is the only black writer I've seen willing to put himself out front & say what is needed. Jason has always impressed me when I caught him on ESPN's "Sports Reporters", which airs on Sunday morning, so I'm not shocked by his leadership here. He is saying it the way it is because he cares, there is no agenda behind what he's doing except for doing the right thing. I respect that.

The problem here is he writes for the Kansas City Star, not the NYT, so his words are harder to pick up as far as the MSM is concerned.

"Some of us are wise, some of us are otherwise"  Mark Levin

Brilliant article Ed. The

Brilliant article Ed. The only thing I would have liked him to include would be the fact that a lot of these black athletes think that they have to maintain a degree of "street cred" so they hang out in places that have more in common with IRAQ than they do a civilized society.  I grew up with a lot of NBA players, Queens N.y had a bunch, Mark Jackson, Khalid Reaves and Stephon Marbury (Bklyn) to name a few. I was visiting my mom in the old neighborhood and Stephon's eggshell white Rolls Royce pulls up, turns out it was just his assistant dropping off some autographed items for my mom. Stephon's assistant is related to family friends and that's how we know him.  The car easily cost 200k, anyway later that week Stephon himself was in the neighborhood, he was at a local nightclub where he was robbed of a ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLAR NECKLACE. Now what the heck is ANYBODY doing wearing a guest house around their neck? Honestly, the club he was a place that made the bar in "From Dusk Till Dawn" look tame! Whenever somebody asks me to go there I laugh in their face and  I'm only  a minor figure on t.v! This guy's worth over a hundred million and he's hanging out there? Without security? It boggles the mind. It's that danged (can u say damn?) hip-hop, wanna be bad, "culture". That said, I don't know why this would be on the "radar" of someone running for the Presidency. I think it's pretty petty to think that neighborhood issues SHOULD be on his screen!  Sorry folks, can't blame "WHITEY" for this one! ( i hope no one was offended by the use of that term, i use it for rhetorical purposes only :}) I don't care if all the whites took a vote and brought SLAVERY back that's no reason  to prey on your own people! If it were, why weren't blacks doing this to each other during the twenties, thirties, forties or the fifties when getting LYNCHED had a certain statistical reality to it?

Racism has NOTHING to do with some fool robbing me because he likes my coat, car, jewelry, you name it, it just doesn't. That kind of talk is divisive and unnecessary. There are real vestiges of racism that need to be dealt with in this society and conversations like this one, I believe, keep that from happening. If you're going to blame whites for what some black fool does in the ghetto to another black, well, there's really no place to go from there, is there?

}}---> Black on Black crime

Of course you're right Keith.  There are a couple of issues we Whites wrap ourselves in for insulation against some of the real charges of racism.  Black on Black, illigitimate births, Rap lyrics, Democrat block voting, all suggest to us a sense of absolution if not blamelessness.

Why why why.

Why does ANYBODY care what these brain damaged idiots (except for maybe Goldberg) think, do or say.

These twits act as if we are debating and deciding who to elect as our rich uncle to give is guidance rather then the head of the executive branch of the federal government.

Goldberg seems to understand that the Federal Government really doesn't have any role to play in inner-city "black on black" crime. She seemed reluctant to come out and say that though. As if black on black crime is worse and it would be somehow better if it were black on white, or white on black, or black on hispanic, etc.

question.

When are more blacks going to think about black on black crime?

UNIDENTIFIED BOY: I want to

UNIDENTIFIED BOY: I want to ask you guys a question. I notice you spent billions of dollars on the war in Iraq every year. But what about the war going on in our country, black on black crime?

This boy/expert seems to suggest that more money would solve the inner city problem.   How many billions have already gone into the inner city problem and the problem is still there?   At least Iraq is getting better and there is some hope that the investment will pay off.

UNIDENTIFIED BOY: I want to

UNIDENTIFIED BOY: I want to ask you guys a question. I notice you spent billions of dollars on the war in Iraq every year. For starts, how many little kids think like this.

But with that said, if we bring every one home, not spend another dime on the war, tell the rest of the world that we quit, and are taking ourball and going home. “At that moment all the black on black crime will stop?”Amazing!

Hey kid, the Taliban “are” right outside your door, they are called Democrats, rap stars, drug dealers, and other blacks that believe that getting a education is acting too white.. Everyone that benefits from you being poor and un-educated.

Events

"For starts, how many little kids think like this."

There was a series in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that followed two very different Army recruits through basic training.  One was a white suburban male in his late-20's who looked at the opportunity to change his life and make something of himself.

The other was a black urban male who was about 20.  The article has a section that reads:

"We are a nation at war, (Drill Instructor) Daly says.  We are fighting a war against a smart, determined brutal enemy force.  Regardless of what you hear in the newspapers, they want to kill you and change this way of life.  No mistake about that."

Those words grab Baskin's attention, and he leans forward.  He hasn't signed up for that."

Now this happened in 2007!  Apparently, not many think like that.  Some don't think at all!

The story ends with both graduating, and they are most likely currently serving us in Iraq.  I wish them both Godspeed.

jonathan,

It is funny that you bring this up...a couple of months ago we had a racist moment in our office. A black woman in our office (she is from Jamaica) had a melt down about something and actually yelled out that we (the white women) thought she was nothing but a stupid you know what. She went on to say that I looked down upon her and thought she was a "dirt rag", whatever that is.

I had no idea was she was talking about because I am usually too busy with work to even have any idle conversations. We were all in shock, nothing came of the incident, but I now walk around on eggshells for fear that I might do or say something than could be misconstrude.

You know, I'm frankly sick

You know, I'm frankly sick and tired of the GOP, or any other politico for that matter, feeling like they have to kiss the arses of minority groups and answer absolutely stupid questions like the one posed by this mental midget!

On one hand, blacks (Oh no, I said blacks, I must be racist!), and other minorities don't want you to notice their skin color or ethnicity (fine!), but then they turn around and want special consideration to be made for this same skin color or ethnicity!?!?

The race card is getting old and wornout.  As Americans, don't we all want the same thing?

Sven, You are right, if we

Sven,

You are right, if we say anything about race we are racist but “any” minority can jump up and down non-stop and use the race card to beat us up with. I for one do not feel guilty because I was born white. For the rest of the white race, get over it.

We, don’t make black men leave their families, do crime, dress with their pants hanging around their knees (always a favorite for employers), treat women badly, or listen to rap that promotes all the above.

I ran and bar/restaurant for 15 year, my chief was black for 10 of those years. He came in when I opened up and said: What can I do to make your restaurant successful? I told him if he could cook, then he was hired. We ended up best friends, we fish together, and he was one of the people who stood with me at my wedding. He gets it. He has his own place now.

Its not rocket science, (its not like we are hiding the secret). Get an education, dress better when you go for a job, use correct English, work hard, don’t do crime (duh..) Stop suing, all that does is the next time a black person walks in the first reaction of an employer is ..”hum.. looks like a law suit just applied.

WE WANT YOU TO GET AHEAD.  It does not put a penny in our pocket to see you downtrodden. It cost us all both financially, and in some ways morally, and all too often as victims of crime.

ITS NOT WHITE TO GET AHEAD, ITS HUMAN..

It's always annoying to me

It's always annoying to me to have these kids, (black, white, brown, whatever) come and try to apply for a job dressed the way they do. I've worked in resturants full time and part time, from cook to management, for 12 or so years now, and never seem to run out of kids who will come in looking like they cant find clothes in their size, asking "Sup wit dat job homie, yall hirin an sh*t?". OK, I'm going to give you a job because...?

Look at what influences this culture, quit looking at me because I wont bend over backwards for these people.

Um... Joy... black on black. It's a single race issue and can't be racism.

Now maybe the candidates could discuss Hispanic on Black crime and we could have ourselves one heckuva debate. Let's save that one for after the primarys though.

....and why do we care what

....and why do we care what these twits think or say? Sorry, but that is how I feel about the View.

I do have to agree with them

I do have to agree with them that Rodney's answer was pretty lame. I would have loved to hear someone say the truth... that the answer to this question and the one about why blacks won't vote Republican comes down to a one-word answer: slavery. The Republicans freed the blacks from slavery, and they turned right around in the country's biggest case of battered wife syndrome and sold themselves right back into it.

What was slavery? Blacks were forced to do the work of their owners, and in return they were given a crappy place to live and enough food to survive. And where are many blacks now? They get a crappy place to live (tenements, projects, Section 8 housing, etc.), they get welfare and other government money to pay for food and clothes, and all they have to do is whatever their political taskmasters tell them to do... vote for me, vote for this gal, boycott this product, protest against this, etc. And who are these taskmasters? The Democrats.

If you want less crime in black neighborhoods, quit voting for people who fight for the rights of criminals over the rights of victims. Quit voting for people who want lax enforcement of laws, who want to legalize the drugs that are ruining your society, and who are pushing kids to have sex earlier in life. You've been voting for these taskmasters for 60+ years and where has it gotten you?

That's the answer I would have given.

Racism

The pack moves at the pace of the leader. In this case, we're talking about a group of people who have appointed Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton as its de facto representatives. Is it shocking they spend so much time waiting on someone to solve the problems they create for themselves? When your movements leaders consist of two photo-opportunists and ambulance chasers, answers will be slow in coming.

I was just thinking about

I was just thinking about Jesse and the fact that he was with MLK. I seriously doubt that MLK would defend some of the bs that Jesse defends. If what I remember from public school about MLK was that he wanted equality but also for them to do for themselves, not "blame whitey" or sit around drinkin 40's and collecting welfare.

sunandsteel

What's "drinking 40's"?

if it's MD 20/20 isn't the mathmatical result MD 1?

But I'm not good at fuzzy math.

40 oz

Colt 45, Olde English, cheap nasty malt liquor.

MD1 lol. Had a few (dozen) bottles of that "fine wine" back in my misguided days.

I would like to see someone

I would like to see someone bring up these two CEOs of the equal rights movement, and discuss them in the same light as other CEOs. Ask black audience members in Harlem what their take-home pay is, and then tell them how many millions these two guys are making.

"GOLDBERG: I know, well,

"GOLDBERG: I know, well, you know, when you talk about white on white crime you are talking about parents, father and mother, who beat their child to death. They don’t talk about that as being a parenting issue."

-------------------------------------------------------------

Well, Whoopi, what a racist thing to say.  It looks like it's not just the white parents anymore, doesn't it?
