Denver Post Helps Left Re-Define Astroturfing

  • Bookmark and Share

The Denver Post reporters John Ingold and George Plavin either don't know what "astroturfing" is, or don't care to correct leftists for using the term incorrectly.  In their report on the Denver Tea Party, they quote Mike "The Headless Chicken" Huttner, as deriding the Tea Parties:

"The tea parties are the latest version in a months-long campaign against change, organized by right-wing think tanks and lobbyists who have done well over the last eight years under George Bush," he said.

He pointed to a number of national conservative political groups listed as sponsors on Taxdayteaparty.com, including FreedomWorks and Americans for Limited Government.

But of course, publicizing events isn't astroturfing.

Astroturfing is when paid activists pretend to be unpaid volunteers or "men on the street."  It's when ACORN members pretend to be "outraged citizens" stalking AIG employees.  It's when people are paid to spam websites with comments, or when the Pew Foundation finances a campaign finance reform campaign, and then conducts a poll showing increased interest in the subject.  It's when DNC employees photocopy petition signatures and then report the number submitted in triplicate.

In short, it involves deception, and hiding one's involvement in a campaign in order to make it look popular.

This isn't random name-calling, this is an attempt to deprive the language of a useful term for the sort of thing the Left excels at by changing the definition to any sort of organizing.

Our Leftists Friendw

Will do everything but actually report  the TEA protesters concerns.

(News from the people who brought you Cindy Sheehan)

The funny thing is...

I believe it was Paul Bagela (sp) who started and bragged about the practice of "astroturfing".

Do not be surprised by the Denver Post bashing the tea parties

I attended the tea party is front of the capitol and I can tell you the attendants were not paid to be there. Just Americans rallying for a common purpose. It was one of the most patriotic events I have ever attended.

Towards the end of the party one of the speakers (his name fails me right now) was talking about how the liberal media are partially to blame for what is happening and how Colorado has thrown out one newspaper "WITH ONE MORE TO GO"! I'm sure a non-reporter from the DP was there and didn't like that statement but the crowd loved it!!!

Re paid protesters

And unlike the immigration 'protest' a couple of years ago, high school kids weren't given time off to attend this protest.

Typical liberal tactic

Falsely charge the opposition with doing what you've been doing.

Popeye Pelosi is engaging in this tactic too, dismissing the tea parties as astroturfing.  She's either a very good liar, or believes it....poor Nanny, too dumb to understand how angry people really are.

Interesting YT clip, the comments haven't been shut down...and it's not a bunch of liberals either.

I hope he fails, too.

Lying, dumb...

...or a third possibility:

A righteousness and haughtiness not seen since Marie Antoinette.

I believe it is a combination of all three, because she is certainly a liar and certainly stupid on a cosmic scale.

*shudder*

I don't think I've ever disliked anyone as much as that woman.

Worried

Loved your post. I advocate boycotting the liberal media starting with the print media who expect us to purchase their pack of lies on a daily basis.

Just an update here: The Kansas City (Falling) Star has had four rounds of layoffs and have now downsized the paper itself, combining sections to make the paper smaller and cheaper to produce, all the while claiming that they have more readers than ever.

Keep up the good work and we can put them all out of business.

Buying a newspaper is the equivalent of paying somebody to lie to you. Boycott your local liberal newspaper.

I usually bash our local paper "Lansing State Journal" in

Michigan but their report for the State Capital  tea party was top notch. Very fair and accurate without any of the misrepresentation I have seen many other places. It is rare but they got it right this time. Even spelled Joe the Plumbers real name correctly.

Thanks. I proudly would like to think I am one of the reasons the Rocky Mountain News shut down because I cancelled my subscription in September after witnessing the love fest being thrown for Obama in August. Page and page of how great he is and picture after picture of idiots drooling at the mere mention of his name.
