'J. Edgar' Film 'Disappointment of the Year'

By John Nolte | November 16, 2011 | 07:50

John Nolte's picture

Kyle Smith of the New York Post and I may share a similar political philosophy but we rarely agree on films. I sense we might agree on this one:

…but as “J.Edgar” sits at an astonishing 39 percent [at Rotten Tomatoes] it would be disingenuous not to notice that this film is getting hammered by critics. Despite its Oscar-winning director, writer (Dustin Lance Black) and Oscar-nominated star Leo DiCaprio, it is at the same approval level as “Immortals.” This is a disaster for a serious, highbrow, historical drama. The thought of critical reception didn’t occur to anyone on the set of “Immortals” but “J.Edgar” was made to win critical hosannas and Oscars....Oh, and “J.Edgar” is terrible and I predict pitiful box office and zero Oscar nominations.

Ouch.

Kyle’s a superb writer. His blog is here.

(Cross-posted at Big Hollywood)

Editor's note: Smith also wrote:

Among the Eastwood pictures that have higher RT scores are the notorious flops "Hereafter" (46 percent), "Changeling" (62 percent), "Blood Work" (53 percent), "True Crime" (54 percent), "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" (47 percent), "Absolute Power" (45 percent), "A Perfect World" (79 percent, and may I say, "Huh?") and even "The Rookie" (50 percent)...Clint Eastwood has an excellent claim on being the most overrated director of the era.

Leonardo DiCaprio is horribly miscast

Submitted by Texndoc on Wed, 11/16/2011 - 8:27am.

He doesn't have the chops to carry a big dramatic role and at age 50 or 60 will still look like an aged baby-faced teen heartthrob.
Imagine "The Kings Speech" from a Hollywood studio instead of Britain. They would have put Leo as King George.
And I read they're planning him as Frank Sinatra. From one disaster to another.

Waste of time

Submitted by jon_torlin on Wed, 11/16/2011 - 10:12am.

He's proven to be a waste of time ever since he got on the Global Warming bandwagon and made that movie that was supposedly some kind of sequel to Algore's slideshow.

Why I don't go to movies anymore

Submitted by cocodrie on Wed, 11/16/2011 - 8:53am.

Hollywood has taken the definition of masculinity from the likes of Gregory Peck down to the likes of Tiny Tim. Feminity has gone from Deborah Kerr to Rachel Maddow.

Why we call it Hollyweird

Submitted by rickster0130 on Wed, 11/16/2011 - 10:37am.

Isn't it wonderful that Planet Hollyweird keeps churning out pseudohistorical nonsense masquerading as fact. A few examples: JFK, Milk, Fair Game, An Inconvenient Truth (how ironic). Now this. Oh well, at least they give us an excuse to play our little game "Spot the Flaw". Better entertainment than the movies, eh what?

Leo DeCoprophagia as J Edgar Hoover?

Submitted by drsamherman on Wed, 11/16/2011 - 11:50am.

Talk about a talent-free hack...I guess we'll next see Denzel Washington cast in the role of Abraham Lincoln just to be politically correct. Paris Hilton as Greta Garbo?

"J.Edgar" is being bashed because it is too kind to the

Submitted by lrgon on Wed, 11/16/2011 - 3:27pm.

man that the Hollywood leftwingers love to hate.

J.Edgar Hoover actually went after subversives of the red stripe and infiltrated left wing groups from the KKK to the SDS. Yes, the Klan is a leftwing group despite the rhetoric. http://www.amazon.com/Klandestine-untold-Delmar-Dennis-against/dp/087000...

Samuel Holloway Bowers was the imperial wizard of the Klan's Mississippi branch but had been a lifelong communist before leading the White Knights in the south. His objective was to stir up the ignorant and prejudicial people in that part of the country to violence. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Holloway_Bowers

On the otherside of the coin the left worked the so-called "civil rights" groups to a frenzy to riot with "non violence" violence. In the aftermath came more government laws for everyone after the smoke had cleared, the blood was washed off the streets and the federal troops went home and the TV cameras were focused on another "Establishment" project.

Eastwood's movie dissapoints both the right and the left with "J. Edgar." But,obviously by the bad "reviews," the leftists are more bothered than is the right.

One conservative reviewer gave it a fairly good review despite the fact that Eastwood was way too kind to the feelings of the liberal left. Google >>> J.Edgar takes a close look at J.Edgar

The secret of Pearl Harbor was that a US president knowingly allowed that to happen.

The FBI's and American law enforcement icon: J. Edgar Hoover

Submitted by lrgon on Thu, 11/17/2011 - 1:19pm.

Clint is known for his famous movie one liners like "make my day, punk." I haven't seen the movie but it would be a shame if Eastwood left out of his movie a famous quote of J. Edgar in which the iconic FBI director called MLK the "most notorious liar in America."

I posted an opinion on "J.Edgar" and Vet jumped in with his personal attacks on me. He can't seem to get over it and drop the vendetta.

This irrationally intolerant behavior is no different that that displayed by a howler monkey that joins in the chorus of the other howlers offering nothing but noise. The human howler may be colorful in their condemnation of anyone who dares to disagree with them or they sense has "invaded" their "territory." But screaming and howling like monkeys is no excuse to a claim that only politically correct "conservative" opinion is allowed.
