The penguins soon won’t have a home and it’s all our fault.
You might get that impression after watching the January 14 “Our Planet” segment on “NBC Nightly News” about the ice shift in
“In 2006, the Antarctic peninsula near South America lost 60 billion metric tons of ice; 132 billion tons disappeared in
Thompson blamed mankind as the “prime suspect” for the changes – ignoring all other possibilities, despite some scientists that are skeptical of that theory.
“Like the warming scientists are seeing in
But it isn’t a unanimous “consensus” the ice in
A recent report posted by Marc Morano, communications director for the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, outlined the objections of 400 prominent scientists from more than two dozen countries to major aspects of the so-called “consensus” on manmade global warming. One of those scientists had doubts about man’s ability to have a profound sudden impact on

MMMMM......Not so much truth here.

January 15, 2008 - 22:03 ET by MikeBFreak, just in case you are serious, I'll try and answer. Antarctica is a continent the size of North America, not a point. All points on that continent, indeed, on the whole globe are north of the south pole. As there is an east and left...uh, exuse me, west coast on the North American continent, there is an east and a west portion of the Antarctic continent, unless your frame of reference is the south pole, in which case, yes there are only northern coastlines on that continent.

Sorry, still not right...
January 16, 2008 - 11:16 ET by SpoonThere is a west coast in North America because if you walk (drive, fly, etc) west, you reach the coast. In Antarctica, if you walk west until you reach the coast, you'll be walking forever. There will always be more Antarctica west of you. Note: far enough north and you will see western edges of pennisulas or outcroppings, but the western coast of Florida is not the same as western North America.
Why not get your facts

Guess what? The Arctic ice is recovering rapidly from last year's lows, and the Antarctic ice is at record levels. All without man doing anything.
The hoax is designed to separate the taxpayer from their money, anyone think to ask how paying more taxes solves anything? Or how using Ethanol and generating CO2 is better than using gasoline and generating CO2? If you think CO2 is a pollutant, don't exhale :-).

Just plain stupid
January 15, 2008 - 16:02 ET by Mike From CanmoreGiven the specific heat of salt water, the idea a recent warming of 0.6 deg C could drive enough heat into a mass the size of the oceans and change ice freeze/thaw patterns to any significant degree is so utterly ridiculous it is truly hard to fathom how people can be so blatantly stupid.

And 60 billion metric tons isn't much
January 15, 2008 - 16:11 ET by RoverAnd how much would 60 billion metric tons be, anyway? Someone should back up my back-of-the-envelope calculation here, but this is a depression in the ice sheet that's about thirty-five feet deep by sixty miles square. Might be impressive to look at, but on a continent the size of North America, suggesting that this is anything but trivial is disingenuous at best.

By the way, when you see the rich like the Kennedys at their compound in Masstaxes start moving their homes inland or putting them up on stilts like some kind of thatched hut in a tropic land, then you can start worrying about GW.
Speaking of the Kennedys, weren't they the ones that fought the alternative energy windmills off their coast - because it would ruin the ambience?

The math is not difficult
January 17, 2008 - 00:17 ET by Ralph Hansen Ph. D.I worked through the calculation for the sea level rise associated with the loss of 200 billion metric tons of ice after I heard the figure in a scary History Channel shockumentary that Greenland was shedding that amount each year.
If spread over the entire planet, that volume of meltwater would raise sea level .01 inches. So if the rate of melting continues, sea level would rise one inch in the next 100 years. Doesn't sound quite as scary as 200 billion metric tons though, does it?
Significant parts of the Antarctic continent have never seen temperatures above zero degrees Fahrenheit, much less a temperature approaching the melting point of ice.
A similar statement can be made of the Greenland ice sheet, although the cold is not nearly as severe. According to Weather Underground, the highest temperature recorded last summer at Summit Camp on the Greenland ice sheet was 34 degrees on June 26. It was the only time in 2007 the temperature reached the melting point.
But surely the whole thing will soon slide into the ocean. Gimme a break!
