Thwarted MSNBC Flamethrower Ed Schultz Says Romney 'Would Let Detroit Burn to the Ground'

By Jack Coleman | June 27, 2012 | 18:06

A  A

This is what is known among psychiatrists as "projection."

A couple of summers back, Ed Schultz was mightily perturbed to be overlooked in upcoming MSNBC promos and reportedly stunned co-workers by shouting that he would "torch this f***ing place!" (video after page break)

The pathology that produced such a revealing overreaction still hobbles Schultz, though now he'd have you believe that those who don't share his steal-the-wealth politics do share his incendiary tendencies.

There he was on "The Ed Show" last night, describing how the once proud city of Detroit is beset by an average of 30 fires a day (compared to 11 in Los Angeles with more than five times as many people), the city's beleaguered firefighters having fielded 30,000 calls in 2011.

Things have gotten so bad that Detroit's fire commissioner decided in April that firefighters would let blazes burn themselves out under certain circumstances. Detroit faces a $200 million deficit and its mayor, former NBA star Dave Bing, this week announced layoffs for 164 firefighters.

"The situation in Detroit could go from back to worse," Schultz said, just before attempting to torch the reputation of Mitt Romney --

SCHULTZ: But the federal government could step in. The mayor is applying for a federal SAFER grant (Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response) that would allow him to rehire nearly two-thirds of the laid-off firefighters. SAFER grants have been awarded by the federal government since the recession began. The grants have kept firefighters on the job across the country, from Newark, N.J., all the way to Sacramento, Calif.

Unless you're someone like Mitt Romney, it's pretty clear government is the answer in Detroit.

ROMNEY (June 8 in Council Bluffs, Iowa): Instead (Obama) wants to add more to government. He wants another stimulus, he wants to hire more government workers. He says we need more firemen, more policemen, more teachers. Did he not get the message of Wisconsin? The American people did! It's time for us to cut back on government and help the American people!

SCHULTZ: Mitt Romney says hiring more firefighters is a problem. There's no doubt in my mind that that guy who said let Detroit go bankrupt would let Detroit burn to the ground.

First the cringe-inducing Joy Behar gushes about how she'd love to see Romney's house burn down, now this. What is it about left wingers and their pyro tendencies?

By what passes for reasoning from Schultz, Obama would also let Detroit burn itself out since he followed through on the managed bankruptcies for struggling automakers suggested by Romney.

Romney on June 8 wasn't suggesting we eliminate government. He's many things, but no anarchist. Romney recommends we cut back on unsustainable government and all the dire consequences resulting from it --  as the situation in Detroit graphically demonstrates. You don't want to live in a place where the only things being built are empty lots.

Whether Romney on his worst day would ever want Detroit -- the city where he was born, not incidentally -- reduced to embers is moot. Democrats and unions who've run the city for decades beat him to it long ago.

Democrat Detroit

Submitted by adamsmith on Thu, 06/28/2012 - 7:29am.

Detroit is the poster child for Progressive policies and the end result. This is what happens when the "Common Good" overrides the Sovereignty of the Individual. The Left claims to have a monopoly on "Science". Any study of Sociology would show these Marxist policies lead to the same disaster everytime, despite the Utopias the Progressive politicians promise every election cycle.

Give Obamalinsky four more years and America, the entirety of the Nation, will look exactly like Motown. Motown is America's future, God Almighty, makes one feel like they should run right out and change their party status to Democrat, doesn't it?

To cause a massive conflagration in Detroit, just add victory

Submitted by Unsane on Thu, 06/28/2012 - 7:27am.

All you would need to do to get rid of what is left of Detroit is the following:

Have one of its teams win a championship.

When the Tigers won the World Series back in 1984, Detroit declared nuclear war on itself (h/t Jim Rome), beginning that grand American tradition: your team wins, burn down your city!

Could you imagine what would happen if the Lions became legitimate Super Bowl contenders?

on the rest of us if that crime-ridden hell hole burned.

Why is it that the solution to any state's or city's problems is to lay off police or fire-fighters and hope for federal money?  The first time this happened around here was back in 1972, our department laid off 29 officers from the 210 members of our PD, then the city stealthily hired the 29 into city jobs, to keep them around until the promised Fed money was delivered.

How about you lay off "crime prevention" social workers, four of the five union workers who stand around, leaning on their shovels, while the probie(who's non-union) does the shovelling, or the 10 or so employees who stand around and ignore the citizens who come in to the treasurer's office with questions?

To re-elect Obama would be like the Titanic backing up and hitting the iceberg again.

If I am not mistaken, it was

Submitted by MikeB on Wed, 06/27/2012 - 10:21pm.

If I am not mistaken, it was fire that finally ended the Black Plague pandemic in Europe. The fire killed the rats that carried the fleas that caused the Black Death. (Note to liberals: racism is not implied by the names Black Plague and Black Death. Google it fools.)
So, perhaps a major conflagration in Detroit, and possible Dearborn, might be what the doctor ordered to stop the plague of stupidity from those shining examples of liberal democratic administration.

Ed, Detroit is run by black liberal politicans so the fire should come as no surprise. The Detroit FD is run on a patronage bsis set set up those same politicans. The whole country would look like Detroit if it wasn't for conservative trying to hold it together.

Dearborn has some of the nicest houses. Detroit has been run into the ground and the people who are trying to save it are being called racists. There is a fiscal consent agreemnt and emergency managers running all over Detroit, but what I hear from the city council it just because they are black.
