You Could Be a Contenda! Chris Matthews Touts Ed Schultz as Union Boss

By Jack Coleman | June 06, 2012 | 23:50

A  A

Considering how you're on the payroll and all ...

MSNBC's Chris Matthews made an observation to colleague Ed Schultz last night that was presumably intended as a compliment but could easily be seen as passive aggressive (video after page break) --

You may not like me saying this, Ed buddy, but I gotta tell you, if you weren't doing this and you're doing a fabulous job as this colleague, you're doing better than we're doing here at "Hardball," you're getting great numbers, I gotta tell you something -- you could be head of the AFL-CIO and they'd be better off for it. Anyway, thank you, Ed Schultz, out there fighting for the middle class. I know I'm right, or something even bigger, Mr. Schultz.

Beyond laughing in response, Schultz was non-committal about Matthews's remarks.

Which is not to say that Schultz let yesterday pass without novel commentary on the Wisconsin recall election.

There he was, for example, interviewed by Rachel Maddow shortly after NBC News projected Scott Walker to defeat Tom Barrett, Schultz looking like someone who had a toad dropped in his beer (video link) --

MADDOW: We have just been able to characterize this race as a win for Scott Walker, Gov. Walker surviving this recall challenge in Wisconsin. I gotta ask your reaction as somebody who's covered this more closely than anybody else in the national media.

SCHULTZ: Well, in many respects it's to be expected considering how much money was thrown at this race. You know, NBC is calling it for Walker. OK, I think it's, it's awful close and there's a lot of absentee ballots yet that are still out and it's going to be very, very close down to the wire.

All of a minute before Maddow spoke with Schultz, she repeated that NBC was projecting Walker to win and the vote tallies to that point were shown -- 61 percent for Walker and 38 percent for Barrett with 21 percent counted. "Awful close"?

True, Walker's margin narrowed until it finally settled at just under 7 percent. That said -- "very, very close down to the wire"?

Earlier in the day, Schultz appeared on "The Daily Rundown" with Chuck Todd and made another dubious claim, that "independents have broken for Tom Barrett" in the final days before the recall. Not surprisingly, Schultz cited no empirical basis for the claim. The rationale for this omission was provided several hours later -- by the results of the recall.

Schultz as union boss? He already is.

I think Chrissy's right

Ed's right out of central casting. Imagine the indicted union boss, Special Ed, testifying before Congress at his racketeering trial. The beads of sweat forming on his furrowed brow are beginning to trickle down his crimson, bovine jowls as he tells lie after lie after lie.........

He

being a fat, bully loud-mouth might get him the job. Obviously most thugs are brainless, hateful and money hungrey and in this catagory, again, he would fit right in but, being tough, he wouldn't make it. He'd probably run home to mommy if a union thug lifted a fist to his face and told him to obey orders.

Was watching "Goodfellas" tonight....

...maybe if Joe Pesci coached Fathead Ed on how to be a tough guy it might work...

I love the circus. Watching these two clowns brings back memories of going to the big top and watching the show. All they need is the tiny car and the size 18 shoes and it would be perfect.

One thing I've learned.......

Submitted by Herbster on Thu, 06/07/2012 - 7:46am.

One thing I've learned about elections and the state run media.............When the talking heads claim an election is, "Too close to call," you know the Republican is ahead and will win. Also, the "Exit polls" leaning towards the left........the "Exiters" have been cherry picked to show some sort of democrat (Leftist) outcome.......

Don't believe half of what the state run media reports and ignore the other half.

Had MSLSD on last night.

Submitted by gwalt on Thu, 06/07/2012 - 7:58am.

Was updating my computer last night and decided to leave MSLSD from night before. Unless I missed a guest, there was not one, not a single Republican on for balance for an hour and a half ( turned midway thru Rachel). it was as if the Dems didn't have a single penny spent in Wisconsin the way Ed railed about the money spent. What always gets me is how much "free" media the Dems got from the Lying Liberal media, local and national. I'm sure it dwarfs the money actually spent by Reps.

simple explanation why Republicans weren't there....

Submitted by thescoots on Fri, 06/08/2012 - 11:35am.

besides the fact that they weren't invited to MSNBC....Maybe they are smart enough to only appear on networks that people actually watch...The only think more lacking on that network than balance is their lack of viewership.

The AFL-CIO would be better off with Schultz as president?

Submitted by SickofLibs on Thu, 06/07/2012 - 9:01am.

Good one, Tingles!

Guess we won't be seeing Trumka as a guest on Hardballz for a while. But maybe we WILL see Tingles in a wheelchair.
