Vintage Maddow Deceit in Describing Arrest of OWS Protesters at Citibank

By Jack Coleman | October 20, 2011 | 10:53

A  A

Nice to see Rachel Maddow isn't letting all those years wishing she worked at Pravda go to waste.

The earnest barbershop tenor in MSNBC's nightly quartet gave an eerily similar version of how the house organ of Soviet communists would have covered the arrests of two dozen Wall Street protesters at a Citibank branch in Manhattan. (video after page break)

Here's Maddow's take on the incident after she told her audience Monday night of Citigroup (which owns Citibank) posting a 74 percent profit in the third quarter of 2011, three years after the bank was bailed out with $45 billion from TARP --

That reality led to this scene over the weekend at one of the big Citibank branches in New York City. About 20 people or so taking part in the ongoing Occupy Wall Street protests arrested by police after marching to that Citibank branch on Saturday afternoon. Among those arrested were actual Citibank customers who were reportedly attempting to close their accounts. Citibank says that the New York City police asked them to close the branch with the protesters still inside until police could arrive to arrest those protesters. Here's how some of that scene played out afterwards. (Footage shown of other protesters yelling "Let them go! Let them go!"

You don't say -- "actual" customers?! Geez, whatever happened to them always being right ...?

If someone described this to you exactly as Maddow has done here, you'd know immediately that something was being left out out -- namely, the basis for the arrests. And it wasn't because "actual Citibank customers" were merely trying to close their accounts when predatory bankers decided to hold them against their will until compliant cops could haul them away, as Maddow claims here.

Not surprisingly, Maddow didn't show any footage shot inside the bank, since this would have rendered her take on the arrests laughable. But the media watchdog site Mediaite posted footage of this along with a story before noon on Monday, plenty of time for Maddow to have undertaken an arduous Google search or two in the nine hours before her show aired that night.

What the Mediaite video shows are OWS protesters inside the bank doing what they love best -- leftist speechifying. This goes on for several minutes until bank employees ask over and over if the speechifiers would kindly leave. Since the bank is private property, the protesters reject this on principle, because -- after all -- this is someone else's property. Worse still, someone else with more of it, the very height of criminality.

Here's how Mediaite's James Crugnale described it --

While others may criticize how Citibank handled the protesters, the video footage appears to confirm the bank's account of what happened inside. "A large number of protesters entered our branch at 555 LaGuardia Place around 2 p.m. today. They were very disruptive and refused to leave after being repeatedly asked, causing our staff to call 911. The police asked the branch staff to close the branch until the protesters could be removed. Only one person asked to close an account and was accomodated.

Tea party protesters doing the same thing in the lobby at 30 Rock and Maddow maligns them as a violent, racist mob and where the heck are the cops when you need them anyway.

"The earnest barbershop tenor.....

Submitted by Blonde on Thu, 10/20/2011 - 11:19am.

...in MSNBC's nightly quartet" EXAGGERATES quite a bit, doesn't he?

Seriously, Mr. Coleman.....if you must begin your pieces here with phrases like that, I must insist upon a beverage alert.

That is a fine, fine bunch of words you strung together there.

I could only watch about 30 seconds of the loudmouth inside the bank, ranting on about the evil Citibank lending students money to go to college. I hope they all have their video cameras / iphones / laptops stolen for being so utterly stupid.

BTW, I read in the local paper that there's a group of 12 here in Fort Lauderdale who are having a hard time finding a place to pitch their little tent city. Also, up the pike in Palm Beach County, they are trying to Occupy Wellington! (where the median income is a mere $91K).  I may have to do a little photographic drive about this weekend.

Tenor?

Submitted by Caringwhiteguy on Thu, 10/20/2011 - 11:51am.

More like second baritone or bass. Competition for tenor is wide open. When Chris gets a tingle or Sgt. Schultz goes off they both give Rev. Al a run for his money. Little Larry on the other hand defies description by any musical definition.

Up here in the Midwest where there still are a few barbershop quartet competitions at county fairs most tend to think of the quartet make-up as all male. Since the make-up of the MSNBC lineup is all male or male wannabe there really wouldn't be room for a soprano. I will concede that your hero Mr. Matthews has the inside track on first tenor.

"Education that is provided"

Submitted by CobraMan on Thu, 10/20/2011 - 12:07pm.

Got to admire the, ahh, "intelligence" of this protester. He claims that he wants education that is provided, when that's exactly what he has, provided he pays for it. I guess it's the "pay for it" part he, and the rest of the "Occupiers, are complaining about.

Hay, Occupiers, if you want an additional serving of food at your favorite organic restaurant, you have to pay for it, right? Well, the same is true for education. If you want additional education, you have to pay for it, just like the rest of us do. You KNEW that before you even started attending college, right? So WHY are you complaining about it now?

The cops

Submitted by Ashrak on Thu, 10/20/2011 - 11:22am.

are out doing what their unions have contracted them to do.

They are out writing tickets to folks so more government coffers can be filled. Politicians have votes to buy, ya know.

I know, I know, that seems like I'm anti LEO, but I'm not. I am keeping it real.

Think about it. When YOU see a cop, what is the first thing that comes into your mind? DO you think, YEAH! There is a protector and defender of my Liberty!"

or

Do you think "Dang, is my seat belt on visibly? Was I looking at my phone or did I look like I might have been looking at my phone? Was I speeding? Did I use my turn signal when I changed lanes just then (even though no other cars were around)? Did I come to a compleeeeeeete stop at the light? Did I miss a "no turn on red" sign? Was my radio too loud? Do I have a taillight out? Did he see that crack in my windshield? Was two beers after work enough to give me a DUI? Did I weave in my lane? Did my tires touch the yellow line, or the white line? etc etc "

I want to see LEO as protectors and defenders of Liberty. However, I view them, because of experiences, as folks who are being used as pawns by government bureaucrats to punish exercise of Liberty not deemed politically correct and permission slipped (with all applicable fees of course) by "government".

Cops aren't around to protect private property rights, or any others for that matter, because they are too busy as a result of being directed to go confiscate it from everyone they can.

Another part of the problem here is that a "bank" is now deemed a "public" place, like all other businesses. Can you say "smoking ban"? Sure, I knew you could.

We are in big trouble, folks. And the idiocy of people like Maddow is precisely why.

That an individual right exists requires that some policy positions be removed from the table of debate.

Ashrak---

Submitted by matthewdean on Thu, 10/20/2011 - 10:40pm.

So, being a visible presence to ensure people are reminded to stay within prescribed rules, regulations, and speed limits is a bad thing?

You might want to consider that your statement "I know, I know, that seems like I am anti LEO, but I'm not.  I am keeping it real", when followed a few paragraphs later by -

"Cops aren't around to protect private property rights, or any others for that matter, because they are too busy as a result of being directed to go confiscate it from everyone they can" -

- makes the two statements, and you, on this subject, anyway, about as contradictory as can be.

I have always enjoyed your posts, Ashrak, as you always have something interesting to say.

That said, your crack about cops -  'to go confiscate it from everyone they can' - is bullsh*t.

I have something to say. My daughter has no loans even though she just completed 4 years at a private university. I paid out of my pocket 120K over 4 years for tuition room and board and some living expenses. I sacrificed and now these OWS weenies complain about the cost. Funny, isn't it?

Submitted by CobraMan on Thu, 10/20/2011 - 12:11pm.

Funny, isn't it? They complain about the banks who loan them the money but not about the Colleges who charges them for their education. They've got their priorities backwards, and they're supposedly College educated! If ANYONE is to blame for "saddling us with debt," as the protesters are claiming, it's the Colleges, not the banks. So, why aren't they protesting the Colleges?
