Vintage Ed Schultz Whine: Why Isn't Weiner Paying 'Restitution' Like I Did After Ingraham Slur?

By Jack Coleman | June 09, 2011 | 19:31

A  A

Oh the unfairness of it all, it's more than Ed Schultz can bear.

Bad enough that embattled Democratic congressman and former habitual tweeter Anthony Weiner hasn't resigned from Congress as Schultz demands. Even worse, at least from Schultz's parochial perspective, the Weiner scandal hasn't cost its namesake a dime while Schultz paid dearly for maligning Laura Ingraham as a "right-wing slut" and "talk slut."

Within one day of Schultz's smear of Ingraham on May 24, MSNBC announced he was taking an unpaid, week-long suspension for remarks the network deemed "unacceptable."

Schultz complained to his radio listeners Tuesday about what he sees as a double standard at work (audio clip after page break) --

Where's the restitution in all of this? This guy's got some work to do and they say, well, people tweeting and Facebooking me saying, Ed, how can you say that when you went through it? (referring to Schultz's call for Weiner to step down). Well, OK, let's talk about that! Anthony Weiner went around for a week lying to everybody, not just one person, but interview after interview after interview. This was his way, repeatedly, of trying to manage a controversial situation. And he lied again and again and again and again until he made the announcement that he wasn't going to talk about it anymore and sooner or later we have to stop asking these questions and move on. He tried to end it his way. He was trying to manage it.

I'm struggling with that. Because there was more and then when it came out and he couldn't manage it anymore he decided to take full responsibility and he wasn't willing to do that. If this had gone away would he have continued on with his activities? I don't know! Is that what we get for as taxpayers? And then yesterday he steps to the plate, it's not about whether he's sorry or not. Where's the restitution? If it will make you feel better out there, with my suspension it cost me thousands of dollars. And it cost me a lot of good will with people that I've got to earn back, so I can't use the crude terms anymore, I've got to change. What is Anthony Weiner doing? Stepping to the plate in front of a press conference, I'm sorry, by the way, I'm going back to Congress. Bull!

That your suspension cost you "thousands of dollars" doesn't make me feel better, Ed. But the possibility you'll change does.

(h/t, Radio Equalizer)

Poor Special Ed

Submitted by Galvanic on Thu, 06/09/2011 - 8:13pm.

Hey, he screwed up.  He should've tweeted a picture of his genitals to Ingraham.  It would've saved him some cash.

Well, for openers ...

Submitted by Newsbubba on Fri, 06/10/2011 - 9:35am.

... Special Ed hasn't even SEEN his genitals in many years because of his more-than-ample belly overhang.  If he wanted a picture of Little Ed he would have to get his wife or an aide to take it for him.  That's about 90% of why he's whizzed at the Weiner man, I think; penis envy.

Secondly, "Where's the restitution?"

Hummmm.  I don't recall that Special Ed got that torqued about Bubba boinking Monika and lying, and lying, and lying about it.  Hell, he got free publicity from it and had liberal women all over the country wanting some of that action!

Yeah, I just think Little Ed is jealous that a scrawny little weasel like Weiner Man tops him in the Bank Walker category.

So Shortbus Eddie is pissed off about this?

Submitted by djwolf12 on Thu, 06/09/2011 - 8:16pm.

Wow. Remember the song and dance show he put on when he apologized on-air to Laura Ingraham? Well, now he proves that he was only sorry that he didn't get paid and will never be sorry for what he said. For that statement alone, Shortbus Eddie proves HE is a liar. One difference in this situation is that Tony Dick is refusing to resign, therefore Dick is vowing to milk every single cent he can out of the American Taxpayers he gets in salary to go away. Eddie's salary, I am sure, comes from revenue generated by advertisers. Only a host on M.S.S.R. could stoop so low to try and compare himself on the scale of what Tony Dick did. You both should go away for a long, long, long time.

Honestly, I have to agree

Submitted by Van Halen on Thu, 06/09/2011 - 8:24pm.

Honestly, I have to agree with Ed. Ed took a hard - much deserved - fall after numerous screwups. The answer to me, is that the DNC is such an unorganzied, leaderless mess right now that they can't stop this out of control Weinergate which has - and get this, folks - gone on for a whopping 14 days.

Van, the answer is that

Submitted by MikeB on Thu, 06/09/2011 - 11:42pm.

Van, the answer is that Special Ed's radio stations were going to lose a lot of money for what Ed said, so he had to apologize and take an unpaid suspension. In Weiner's case, there is no (immediate) loss to his sponsor the DNC. If there is no immediate consequence to the party and/or its leadership, they have no incentive to keep their house clean. And, it isn't just Weiner. Ted Kennedy, Barney Franks, Gerry Studds, and on and on. Usually when a Republican screws up, that lawmaker is forced to resign, or state they won't run again, or they get primaried out. As has been said many times before, sleaze is a resume enhancer for Democratics.

MikeB, I respectfully would

Submitted by Van Halen on Fri, 06/10/2011 - 1:22am.

MikeB, I respectfully would disagree - there is indeed massive damage to the Democrats and the DNC with Weinergate now in Day 14 or 15. They can't get their message out. They look like fools. They don't appear to be able to control one of their own and this reflects on them big time. Everyone knows Weiner is a Democrat. Look at the jokes, the silly play-on-Weiner headlines. If I were a Democrat and this had gone on two weeks I'd be demanding that my party leaders be fired for rank incompetence.

Ed actually has a good idea!

Submitted by motherbelt on Thu, 06/09/2011 - 8:27pm.

Ed actually has a good idea!

Maybe congress and the senate should have fines, like they do in sports.

If Weiner's not going to resign, maybe he should at least pay a fine of $10,000 or so.

Otherwise, there's no penalty at all!  And please, don't count the embarrassment; the man has no shame.

But, at least now we know why Ed has been so hot to get Weiner to step down.

He's jealous!

If he steps down, he could grovel to cable TV execs for talking-head "analyst" gigs that hopefully pay more than the $825 he gets for appearing on HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher."

But with Weiner's reputation in ruins, other lucrative jobs may be hard to get.

Two words for Schultz, and Weinger, Sanford, Clinton, etc.

Submitted by CO2Maker on Thu, 06/09/2011 - 9:01pm.

John Profumo.

What Weiner should do now, what Sanford and the others should have done, is not about private errors v. public trust, or a blunder between spouses, or public responsibility, or cravenness, or any of the other things. It's about honor. George Washington had his famous set of rules, which were meant to build honor. And when Sir John Profumo was caught in a sex scandal, he resigned, left public life, and *for 40 years* worked in a charity shelter in the East End of London, cleaning toilets at first and then later serving as its director. Forty years. Desert wandering time.

But times have changed since Profumo

Submitted by Galvanic on Fri, 06/10/2011 - 8:43am.

Sex scandals are not as politically fatal as they once were. Clinton is a prime example.

It depends on who gets caught, and what party he's in (I can't think of any female pols in sexual scandals.)  Confronted with the evidence, Rep. Gerry Studds admitted to having flown an under-18 male page to Portugal for sex outside the jurisdiction of US laws.  He not only didn't get charged with breaking the law, he got re-elected a couple more times.

Weiner might survive this and get re-elected; he apparently still has support in his district.  But his aspirations to be Mayor of NYC are certainly dead, and he's not likely to get any political allies on the Hill because he's poison.

More than a bit strange when one liberal calls out another liberal over less-than-appropriate behavior. Jealousy? Perhaps. And THAT is the only purpose Weiner will serve between now and 2012 elections if he decides to stick it out.

Actually there is a glimmer of hope for Ed

Submitted by needle on Fri, 06/10/2011 - 11:11pm.

Not only did he make a manly and unalloyed apology to Laura Ingraham -- it certainly was a whole lot better than Weiner's almost flippant apology to Andrew Breitbart -- but now Ed is beginning to notice that life -- that is real life -- is not fair.

I await further developments; however, I believe that he will need to move beyond and out of the influence of MSNBC for there to be real hope for real change.
