Michael Vick's Abuse of Dogs As Payback for Bull Connor, Slavery

By Jack Coleman | December 30, 2010 | 16:44

A  A

Someone finally -- finally! -- has drawn the obvious correlation between NFL quarterback Michael Vick's killing of animals in an illegal dog-fighting ring and the monstrous injustices committed against blacks during slavery and the civil rights movement.

What's hardly surprising is who's making the connection -- Princeton professor Melissa Harris-Perry, MSNBC's go-to gal for all things racial, appearing last night on "The Rachel Maddow Show" with guest host Bill Wolff to discuss President Obama praising the Philadelphia Eagles for giving Vick a second chance after serving time in prison and Tucker Carlson saying on Fox News that Vick should have been executed.

Harris-Perry, as is her wont, sought to put matters in historical perspective (video after page break) --

We want to be really careful here, but also try to recognize that there's some complex issues at stake whenever you're talking simultaneously about African-Americans and talking about issues of animal rights. And it may not seem like those two things have anything to do with each other, but in fact historically, questions about the humanity of black people and the relative importance of the life of animals, have in fact been deeply connected.

Look, the fact is in this country, our horror about the treatment of animals is pretty restricted to a particular set of animals. In other words, we're not really all that horrified about the, you know, animals that we kill to wear on our backs or the ones that we, you know, do horrible things to before we slaughter them for our food source. But animals that are supposed to be our domestic pets are, you know, they're almost like a fetish. We really love them and we see them as innocent and as without, as without any kind of sin. So anyone who would do something bad to those kinds of animals is considered sort of beyond the pale of human action.

But remember that in this country one of the ways that black people were enslaved, one of the ways that segregation and other civil rights violations were allowed is that black people were equated to animals. They were called apes or chattel or beasts of burden. And remember also that during the civil rights movement and even during slavery, dogs were often used directly against black people. And so there is a weird kind of interconnection and anxiety when you start talking about, simultaneously, issues about race, and often when you're talking about black athletes and in this case also a black president, and then animal rights. And so there's a lot of emotions that, and old historical stuff, that comes up.

In other words, Vick's abuse of animals and the controversy that followed are further tragic legacies from slavery, segregation and the backlash against civil rights for blacks. Why not say so instead of euphemizing with banalities such as "weird kind of interconnection"?

For the next 60 seconds (or as long as it takes me to type this) I'm going to feel really sorry for American blacks. We (white folks) have damaged them mentally to the point where they just can't recover (even if they wanted to) to a point where they can come to the realization that, as Freud is reported to have said, "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar". Personally, I'll never even be able to eat chocolate ice cream again, since that's an obvious metaphor......or is it symbolism. Hey! I told you I didn't have a PhD!

Let's destroy an MSM stereotype.

Submitted by Red Jeep on Thu, 12/30/2010 - 6:27pm.

The stereotype? How god awful terrible slavery led to the way blacks are now that some have been driven to kill dogs.

Who was more valuable back in the decades just before the Civil War, a black slave or a poor white immigrant living in the North?

In the North, a poor white factory worker who was injured, or became sick and could not work was cast aside with no health insurance etc. and could try begging to sustain himself and his family.

Black slaves were valuable. Their owners paid a lot of money for them. Their health was of number one concern so that they could work. The slaves were the first recipients of "employer" provided health care. Slaves also had housing and food provided. Poor white factory workers did not.

It is a movie myth and a fiction created by the anti-slavery forces in the North that most slaves were beaten and families split up and sold. Makes good fiction, but doesn't lead to healthy, happy workers, who outnumbered their plantation owners and a  slave revolt would possibly lead to the plantation owners death.

Maybe someday a hundred years from now an accurate narrative of slavery in this country might be written, but I doubt it. I am not saying it was all wonderful and rosy, but it made no economic sense to mistreat slaves as is the current fiction.

Bonus quiz: What man's inventions led to continued slavery in south and sweat shops in the North? Eli Whitney. His cotton gin made cotton profitable to grow/harvest . His concept of interchangeable parts "enslaved" the Northern factory worker

Beat your kids, 'cause your ancestors were slaves.

Submitted by CobraMan on Thu, 12/30/2010 - 6:24pm.

Ok, I get it, Vick beat his dogs because slaves use to be mistreated and the people who mistreated them sometimes sometimes used dogs to attack them and Vick has some type of genetically stored racial memory which is triggered by the sight of a dog, and that memory causes anxiety whenever he sees a dog. Because of this, it's understandable that black men mistreat animals, especially dogs. It's due to some kind of genetic, racial memory triggering anxiety.

So, it must also be  understandable that black men beat their kids as well, correct?  After all, the kids of slave owners used to grow up to become  black man beating slave owners themselves, right?  Right? Well, if seeing a dog brings on anxiety because of their link to slavery, then seeing children must do the same thing, and for the same reason, correct? I mean, really, when dealing with Black men beating their children, it's a lot more complicated than most people, those who's ancestors never experienced the horrors of slavery, can understand, right?

See, that's what happens when you try to justify one immoral act by referring to another immoral act. You can't just limit it to a specif indecent, a specific situation.

Who said slavery was immoral?

Submitted by stunned on Fri, 12/31/2010 - 12:11am.

An even better point is that slavery was an accepted institution world wide until a bunch of white, Protestant ministers came together in England  and later in New England preaching the truth that ALL men are created in God's image and enslaving any man is a sin.  It was not Africans, Muslims or men from mars who became Abolitionists and changed the entire world's opinion of the evils of slavery.  This aspect of who was enlightened is sorely lacking at university so called diversity or better named victimization programs.

immoral slavery

Submitted by Agnostic on Fri, 12/31/2010 - 12:22am.

Yes, you are of course correct.  In schools and movie theaters around the country you might occasionally hear about the fight over the morality and ethics of slavery in England but you never about that very same battle that occured in the US.  All you hear about is the Civil War and how Lincoln freed the slaves.  If that is what is considered teaching history we are doomed to repetition.

To add to your short take on the subject - a great deal of credit needs to be given to the women of the church who pointed out the immorality of slavery in public ways that men of the time probably couldn't have done without confrontation.

racial discussion

Submitted by driguana on Thu, 12/30/2010 - 9:16pm.

This is yet another sterling example of the fact that despite all of the clamoring that we are so racially diverse and politically correct, there is no dialague taking place in this country about race relations....the real problems and the real solutions. Only lecturing and finger wagging about who is racist and who isn't. Why do some people still prefer to be with their own kind? Why do we stereotype? Why do we hyphenate our americanism? Why do we fear each other? What do we want? There is no dialogue....nothing, nada, zero, rien du tout.....Shame on the media and the universities and the town halls for not focusing on this in a humane and gallant way. You may think that "the economy stupid" is the biggest challenge facing this country, but, some of us still believe that it is racism.....racism that travels in all directions.

The hyphenated name thing has always driven me nuts, especially when it's passed on to children. It's like stamping them as PC from birth. And I always wondered what would happen if, let's say, little Johnny Harris-Perry grew up to marry little Ophelia Lipschitz-McQuardle. How would THEY ever hyphenate their already hyphenated names? Oh sure, it could be done, but have you ever heard of anybody with a name like Harris-Perry-Lipschitz-McQuardle?

No, because the hyphenating must end there, or it becomes comical. I think hyphenating is just another example of the lib's inability to think ahead.

Submitted by big.league.slider on Fri, 12/31/2010 - 12:46am.

A few relevant facts for Dr. Harris-Perry:

Michael Vick was born in Virginia in 1980.  The civil rights conflicts with Bull Connor took place in Alabama during the late 1960's.  He can't possibly have any traumatic memories of it.

Michael Vick got a full scholarship to a prestigious US university.  He then earned millions in the NFL.  What reason would he have for a grudge against dogs?

Bull Connor was a Democrat, very active in the Democrat party.  So according to Harris-Perry's theory, shouldn't he hold a grudge against Democrats like Obama?

Typical Liberal Idiocy

Submitted by DaMama on Fri, 12/31/2010 - 12:54pm.

It's amazing that people get their panties in a twist over what Michael Vick did - dog racing and abusing animals.  Of course it is horrendous and disgusting and he deserved to pay for the crime.

But when a doctor in Massachusetts get 6 months for manslaughter because he killed a woman during a "safe" botched abortion, and Vick gets 22 months for his problem with dogs, there is something very wrong with our society.

the topic pushed by the LSM is how we should commend BO for saying how COOL it was to give vic the d*(k  a pass and forgive a disgusting human being (and I am using that term real loosely)  that has no respect for life plain and simple.

The Bigger Questions

Submitted by hbnolikeee on Fri, 12/31/2010 - 2:34pm.

Aren't there many many many talented people that aren't scum that now deserve a chance to fill the spot the this creep was given and obviously not deserving of?

Why reward this creep when there are others as talented and more deserving?

BHO's rationale

Submitted by Model850 on Fri, 12/31/2010 - 4:49pm.

Oblunder can sing Vick's praises without feeling any guilt because it was "only" dogs Vick was abusing, and they're unclean as far as Muslims are concerned, right?

So what Vick did really was no big deal to BO.

The value of an IVY League

The value of an IVY League education seems to have really dropped.....It sounded like a bad Saturday Night live skit from the early 1990s.

man i hate liberals.

Submitted by BackWaterTech on Mon, 01/03/2011 - 12:49am.

seriously, Mr vic should be done with sports.

liberals in our colleges are too quick to forget how the nazi's got started with killing of "undesirables" (be real folks, the germans wern't just killing Jews in those camps, just mostly jews. . . ).

they started with dehumanizing them.

many of the nazi leaders also like watching dogs and chickens kill one another in thses kind of fights Vic was participating in. . .

So to say its OK for Vic to go back to work getting paid more than most Americans will in thier lifetimes, would say: "Hey its OK to kill dogs, or other living things."
