Frum Forum Blogger Embarrassed His Mother Has Political Opinions
So in a blog post at FrumForum (it’s like Penthouse Forum, minus the sex), a writer details a phenomenon called “Fox Geezer Syndrome.”
It’s when your elderly parents become politically energized, thanks to watching so much Fox News.
Richmond Ramsey, a pseudonym for “wussface,” slams his mom, thusly:
I don’t know when it happened, exactly, but she began peppering our conversation with red-hot remarks about President Obama. I would try to engage her, but unless I shared her particular judgment, and her outrage, she apparently thought that I was a dupe or a RINO. Even though we’re all conservatives, I found myself having to steer our phone conversations away from politics and current events.
…It wasn’t that I disagreed with their opinions – though I often did – but rather that I found the vehemence with which they expressed those opinions to be so off-putting.
And so your parents are embarrassing reactionaries, cuz they chose Beck over Oprah.
Look, Ramsey has a point – for many people Beck has been an energizing influence. But he hasn’t turned the elderly into pitchfork-waving neanderthals. Some, thanks to Beck, are reading more, and buying more books. And some are investing in food storage. I bought an underground trampoline made of gold.
The gist in this condescending piece: your parents are stupid because they are easily swayed by tv. And because they never had strong opinions before, their current emotional state must be manufactured. Unlike, of course, their more sophisticated offspring – who are young, pragmatic and smart. Pop’s just cranky, old and reactionary.
And of course, the blogger must bring up the Tuscon shooting. Yep, maybe you should worry about mom and dad, since, “passion is the enemy of clear thought and…the prerequisite for mob rule.”
Man, what a dumb thing to say about the folks who gave you life and raised you.
And who might also drop you from the will.
And if you disagree with me, you sir are worse than Woodrow Wilson.

Ramsey has too much time on his hands.
I'm like his parents, and suffer from their passion, which he calls "the enemy of clear thought."
Ramsey, here's a "clear thought" for you. When we were younger we were working our asses off trying to raise kids, make a living, defend this country, and otherwise overcome the bullshiite that politicians caused. We didn't have time to spend worrying about cerebral things like "hope and change." We just got the hell on with it.
Now that I'm retired, facing an ever shorter future life, and have time to worry about the world I'm leaving to my children and grandchildren, I look up and see what a mess this administration has created in two short years, and I get really pissed!! I suspect that your mom did the same, junior.
So, junior, get off your mom's case and get on Barack Hussein Obama's case! Is that clear enough for you, or will one of us "old vets" have to kick your skinny ass to make the point?
Now I've got to get to the gym so I'll still be in shape for the coming "mob rule" you seem to think we are going to be the cause of.

I actually find this rather funny. My mom has "Fox Geezer Syndrome" I guess. It's difficult to discuss politics with her, because she gets her news/opinions from Fox News (so do I, but...) but she doesn't get the background to the information... merely the declaratory statements and the unchecked/uncheckable stories. And she's very vehemenet about it. It's not that I disagree with what she says (for the most part, I don't disagree) but the manner in which she says it. Kind of like many of the 'conservative' pundits. I agree with the whats, just not the hows.
As Glenn Beck says, don't take their word for it. Do your own research!
We dare not tempt them with weakness. For only when our arms are sufficient beyond doubt can we be certain beyond doubt that they will never be employed.
We've seen this movie before

Most of us, in the "Fox Geezer Syndrome" category have seen this movie before. Actually, we were young marrieds, in OUR twenties when we had to live through Jimmy Carter's presidency. We REMEMBER gasoline lines (your day depended on the end number on your license plate, but at least gasoline was under $1 then). We REMEMBER trying to buy our first homes- with EIGHTEEN PER CENT INTEREST RATES. We REMEMBER our troops dying in the desert, unable to rescue our hostages. We cheered and cried when our Olympic hockey team beat the mighty Russian team.
We lived through the Kennedy assassination, Viet Nam, Woodstock, FALN and SDS bombings, LBJ, Nixon, Watergate, and Jimmy Carter. We grew up, got jobs, tried to raise our kids to be good citizens, tried to hold the line over video games, drugs, and random sex. We hoped our children would have more opportunities and a more peaceful world than we did when we were their age. And, when our children were still becoming adults, we watched in horror on 9-11, as our country was attacked. Seared into our brains are the images of men and women CHOOSING to jump out of the inferno of the World Trade Center buildings. We will never, ever forget, even if our offspring would rather not remember.
We wanted to believe that Obama was moderate and wanted to have a President who would heal the racial divide that has torn at our country throughout our lifetimes. We quickly found out that we were wrong on all counts.
We've seen our financial security imperiled, our national security compromised, our history villified and our culture demeaned. We wonder how we failed so miserably in teaching our children critical thinking skills.
