Matthews Thanks Guest for Recognizing Political Opportunity Of Japan Disaster for Obama

By Geoffrey Dickens | March 14, 2011 | 18:19

Geoffrey Dickens's picture

The Birther conspiracy obsessed Chris Matthews, on Friday's Hardball, suggested the disaster in Japan was a good opportunity for Barack Obama to remind people he was born in Hawaii. Well when a guest on Monday's show pointed out Obama did just that, the MSNBCer couldn't help but congratulate him as he told the Washington Post's Eugene Robinson: "Thank you for reminding us the President was raised in Hawaii...and not of the Maus Maus, which some of his more insane critics have brought up."

Matthews began his final segment by leading his guest into the answer he was looking for by asking, "What do you think of the way he's handled this thing?"

The following Robinson response and subsequent Matthews praise was aired on the March 14 edition of Hardball:

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Let me go to Gene. You know the President was at his best, I thought, in terms of just that quickness. And here's a country that has bought into our culture, since the war. Baseball, of course probably the most impressive country in buying our country many ways. What do you think of the way he's handled this thing?

EUGENE ROBINSON, WASHINGTON POST: Well what was interesting to me was, the way the President noted his personal connection to Japanese culture, having been raised in Hawaii, which has a heavy influence of, of Japanese culture, he's familiar with it. I think it affected him personally. And so, in terms of the, the humanitarian response of trying to help Japanese I think he has been as fast and, and correct as you could possibly be.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

MATTHEWS, CLOSING THE SHOW: Gene, thank you for reminding us the President was raised in Hawaii! That the influence he felt was of the Japanese-Americans and living in Hawaii and not of the Mau Maus, which some of his more insane critics have brought up.

I saw them on the news tonight already cleaning up the streets and beginning to get their stuff in order. No one was looting it either. Wasn't it about this point in time that the residents of New Orleans were sitting on their asses waiting for someone to come save them? Some were busy collecting loot, also. But never fear. I too have taken note of how admirably the Japanese have stood up in the face of these terrible tragedies. Now we have an administration that is actively involved producing a far greater number of parasites toward our complete ruination.

It's like we have seen over and over again, as far as this WH is concerned, the value of life has little meaning, or has been demeaned unless it was Holder's "his people" or the Muslims.  I saw a clip of him playing at Andrews, I presume it was this weekend, he still sucks at it, but it looked like he was playing without a care in the world.  Had I been there and saw the devastation our ally has gone through, I'd be too upset to do anything recreationally speaking.

But there it is, that GD MF POSSOB (that's as far as I'll go here) treats one of our allies like crap even though we are providing relief efforts.  How insulting is that, especially the "unshakeable" part, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot??

NEITHER MATTHEWS NOR OBAMA MENTIONED "BORN"

This is second time in the past three days that ordinarily meticulous NewsBusters editor/bloggers have misstated the facts.

If Obama is to be excoriated for responding to a question by noting that having grown up in Hawaii he had a personal connection with the Japanese--and Matthews and Robinson hammered for referring to it--the condemnations should at least be supported by accurately reported details.

I understand one can be born in one place and raised in another and one can say " I was raised in Kenya." and until otherwise informed one can assume one is born there also.

Since common knowledge is President Obama was born in Hawaii,  to say he was born and raised in Hawaii is redundant.

To further complicate this sorted tale, he also was raised in Indonesia and several other places. such is the life of a vagabond. To clarify, the mystery to me is not where he was born, but why the state secret surrounding his birth certificate.

forty four presidents in the history of the United States and all but one escaped this dilemma.

Maybe he is just very special and I should be ashamed to think there is something nefarious afoot.

Jer was making a point about Mr. Dickens minor betise reference to the term "born" as opposed to "raised." Now Jer being a great picker of nits made a valid point. I admittedly stretched credulity to make an even finer point and in the process, stumbled into the Alice in wonderland like world surrounding President Obama's birth certificate.

I think the question is valid, why is President Obama's long form birth certificate a state secret? it just seems rather odd.

Since you live there in Hawaii, Mr Killa of 37 souls, maybe you can enlighten me on a question I have; prior to statehood, was it customary for women to give birth at home, then days or weeks later go to the local hospital and receive a birth certificate prima facie? if so, this may be the root of the birther issue.

It seems odd to me that the United States can't keep it's nuclear secrets, a secret and yet President Obama's long form birth certificate remains a state secret, unlocked by none.

Apologize but I must interject here. The error in the article is not of much importance. The issue and substance of this article, to me at least, is something of greater importance. When you study Obama's history, his behavior is actually symptoms of a more serious problem than just his "detatchment". Due to my past professional experience, I have seen this behavior before with abused and neglected children. I am sure DaMama and docsamherman could do a much better job explaining than I so I will refer you to this defintion and description to better explain his peculiar behavior.

What I find interesting, cajun...

Submitted by Jer on Tue, 03/15/2011 - 8:37pm.

Is that the alarming array of psychological and personality disorders [narcissism, separation syndrome, psychopathy, BPD, messianic complex] and behavioral issues [arrogance, self-absorption, anger, vindictivenes, aloofness, insecurity, deception, and chronic assholiness] attributed to Obama have been diagnostic conclusions reached by those who have never spent one single second of personal interaction with the man--and appear to be completely at odds with the assessment of those who have.

Please understand that the foregoing is in no way intended to be critical of your competency. Even cursory readings of the extremely intelligent, informative, and insightful comments you have posted here over the past year or so remove any and all doubt regarding your professional skills.

However, although I will concede there has been occasional pettiness, lapses in judgment, and ill-advised remarks on the part of Obama, these seem little more than a reflection of normal human frailties and foibles rather than manifestations of a profoundly damaged psyche.

I never intended my link to be an actual diagnosis nor an intended insult. What I was trying to explain is that due to limited and protected information, we really know very little about this man. At times, even liberal commentators have questioned his actions, words and agenda. What we all have seen of him does often appear to be contradictory to his PR image. Studying this individual, based on some of his past history, provides an interesting opportunity to try to analyze his personality. ( my profile does say that I enjoy studying people)

Some of his personality quirks are apparently the result from some of his childhood experiences. Those I recognize from working with children abandoned, neglected, abused, without a stable caretaker, etc . To understand his background in terms of personality developement may help understand his current odd behavior at times.

The question of concern is his honesty, the end justifies the means, and his very large ego. Those qualities lend to his apparent self aggrandizement in his policies and his agenda. These qualities do not lend him the leeway to put others before himself. This deserves further study in light of current country and world problems don't you think Jer?

"What do you think of the way he's handled this thing?" Handled what? That's the problem, this President appears dazed, paralyzed and confused. He's on autopilot. Yesterday the stress got so bad he had to golf. This man is not a leader in any shape manner or form. And he is unqualified to serve for several reasons. He acts like a little boy playing at President. Shocking. And at the worst time in American history we have someone like this.

well we did get " the American people stand behind the people of Japan" One gets the feeling this admin is more interested in sending out sayings that will fit on bracelets and bumper stickers then dealing with situations as leaders.
