Teen Disney Star Admits Smoking Pot, Networks Shrug
Another teen “role model” down the drain – Miley Cyrus, aka, Disney’s “HannahMontana" recently admitted at her 19th birthday party that she smokes pot - a lot of pot. But instead of reporting this sad news to viewers, ABC, CBS and NBC have shrugged off the admission as if it's not at all news.
In a video released by The Daily, Cyrus took the microphone at her birthday party last week in Los Angeles and said, "You know you're a stoner when your friends make you a Bob Marley cake … You know you smoke way too much f***ing weed." This comes as no surprise to those who remember the video released last year of Cyrus smoking a bong claiming it was not weed and in fact the legal hallucinogen, salvia.
Cyrus, perhaps most famous for her role in the smash Disney channel television show "Hannah Montana" has been a teen pop star with her icon status influencing fashion, music, movies and television. As of April 2008, her franchise was worth $1 billion.
The 19-year-old world-wide sensation admitted, in public and on camera, that she uses an illegal drug, and the networks fail to report this news. Cyrus admitted she was in fact a "stoner" which implies she is a frequent user of marijuana, and there was not a single mention on the ABC, CBS or NBC's morning news shows on Monday November 28th, just days after the video surfaced.
Instead of reporting the news that one of the biggest pop stars, and a role model to many young girls, has just outed herself as a pothead, the networks shrugged and discussed Thanksgiving leftovers. At 19, Cyrus is responsible for her own actions, but given how many young pop stars have become cautionary tales that networks do cover, her troubling public statement should merit some coverage.
In early November 2011, former Disney pop star Lindsay Lohan did time in jail, and ABC, CBS and NBC all covered her umpteenth trip to the slammer for drug and alcohol problems in their morning news reports.
It's fair to ask, what's the difference between Cyrus and Lohan, except maybe before-and-after? Celebrity, drugs and booze have made Lohan's life and career a train wreck. Hopefully, Cyrus won't follow her fellow Disney star to disaster. But rather than wait until they can show another young star self-destructing in public, perhaps the networks should shine a light her steps in that direction, if only to warn parents about whom their children are looking up to.

The child was banned from our home a long, long time ago.

Raised in a bubble, lacking good parental influence, possessing only a modicum of ability and even less in the way of intellect, and having only the moral underpinnings her scriptwriters provided?
Not around my children, nope.
It is, however, pathetic that her birthday blunder isn't being widely reported. If a more-talented singer with a different, Christian worldview--someone like Rebecca St. James, for example--were to slip, much less leap head-first, away from her values, it would no doubt be news to the networks. But shhh, don't tell anyone about Miley.
In other news, Morgan Freeman is marrying his step-granddaughter. But don't tell anyone, since he shares the same liberal worldview, too...

...raising his daughter than he did trying to make a career out of that insipid song he once did.
Yeah, this is another Hollywood train wreck in the making, and you can be sure the MSM will be pulling out all the stops to cover it, too.

Considering most of the media are participating in the same behavior?
Or maybe...

....she was just trying to be funny? For all you know, the entire reason for the cake and her "confession" was because of the photograph you referenced.
Here are some more straws.

They're for when you've run out, after grasping at so many with regard to that child's unfortunate, chronic (pardon the pun) behavior.

Do we expect too much from our celebrities

I grew up and never had the urge to try drugs. I didn't care to smoke, and never drank very much in college. Today I embrace a fairly healthy lifestyle that includes diet and fitness.
But unfortunately it is hard to find a 19-year old who hasn't tried some form of drugs or alcohol. This shouldn't be a right of passage but unfortunately it is one. People do stupid things in their youth.
The problem is that we expect these kids to be celebrities, to have money and fame and not to understand it. So many child stars have had lives that turn out awful. The list goes on and on, and yet there is always another family that is willing to put their child in the spotlight.
Dakota Fanning is one example of a child star who didn't live out Drew Barrymore's life, but the latter can also be an example of someone who can turn her life around - as opposed to Lindsay Lohan for example. Lohan's latest move is to pose for Playboy.
The other problem is that those stars that try to stay pure and innocent can find themselves as adults without a career. This is likely Miley Cyrus trying to break the Hannah Montana image. And maybe parents don't like it, but once Shirely Temple became a teenager her career was over.
Cyrus can't hope to entertain tweens forever and her fan base has gotten older. Consider that the same kids that watched her show five years are now also 19 years old, and might be smoking pot and drinking. So Cyrus is just trying to break the image.
It is sad that she stops being a role model, but at the end of the day what I think we need to ask is whether child stars - WHO ARE CHILDREN THEMSELVES - should even be role models. I admit Hannah Montana is a brilliant concept - a young girl who is just like every other young girl has a secret double life where she is a huge singing star. That's great, but should either Miley or Hannah ever have been the role model?
Oh cmon, it's not that hard to find one.

I am 19 (honest to God) and haven't had alcohol OR drugs. Maybe it's hard to find one in New York, but there's plenty of 19 year-olds who are clean where I live.
