MRC’s Gainor: Left Would Shut Down MSNBC ‘in a Heartbeat’ to get Fox Off Air

By Erin R. Brown | November 19, 2010 | 16:16

Media Research Center Vice President of Business and Culture Dan Gainor appeared on Fox Business Channel’s ‘Varney & Co’ Nov. 19 to discuss Sen. Jay Rockefeller’s stated wish to shut down both Fox News and MSNBC.

The West Virginia Democrat recently said, “There’s a little bug inside of me which wants to get the FCC to say to Fox and to MSNBC: ‘Out. Off. End. Goodbye.’ It would be a big favor to political discourse.”

Video below the fold

So Rockefeller would silence the two networks he sees as on the extreme opposite fringes of discourse: Fox on the right and MSNBC on the left. Fox Business’s Charles Payne called Rockefeller’s statement “crazy” and Gainor agreed that it was “so loony that politicians when they say it then later on they go like ‘I said that? I didn’t really want to say that.’”

Rockefeller, of course, has no authority or constitutional right to limit free speech, but Gainor believed his idle talk was telling. “This just goes to the heart of how much the left really hates Fox. They don’t hate MSNBC, but they’d throw them under a bus in a heartbeat just to take down Fox.”

In order to get Fox off the

Submitted by jkwtrading on Fri, 11/19/2010 - 4:23pm.

In order to get Fox off the air it will take more than a legislative accomplishment...  the Left would have to fight a physical fight if they took Fox off.

Is the left up to a real fight with injuries?

if the left did manage to remove Fox I believe it would last straw before we took a new approach to this dogfight of words between right and left and made it a physical fight.

And there's a little bug inside me that wants people such as yourself to be stripped of all political, social, and even managerial power, be relegated to janitorial jobs, and denied breeding rights.  It would be a big favor to Human Existence, especially to our Gene Pool.

Dead Zippers LIES again.

Submitted by The Vet on Sat, 11/20/2010 - 3:19pm.

Dead Zippers here: Nothing like a little name confusion, right?  Kinda like trolling around calling other members zippers and nwahs, even though you know it's an outright lie.

Dead Zippers (to Joe W.): In 9 weeks and 3 days with no tracking function? How's it going, Blonde?

Dead Zippers: Or are you just a retread with a bone to pick?

Dead Zippers (to Joe W.) : The least you could do is have the integrity to come after me with your real identity, J. (Referring to Blonde)

Dead Zippers (to Blonde) : It's completely obvious you have posted attacks against me using an array of logins, and Joe W is no different.  I've been around long enough to recognize a fake, especially one who is as obvious as Joe W.

Dead Zippers: I admitted so much as having previous accounts banned.

So the troll co-opted my name because I dared refer to him as one of his sock puppets and a banned user. But it is A-OK for the troll to call others by another user's name.

Hypocrite much nwahs?

viewers and ratings

Submitted by jon_torlin on Fri, 11/19/2010 - 4:59pm.

Hm, who knew that FNC's ratings and increasing viewership would drive the left insane....oh wait, that's a bit redundant, sorry about that thing there.

Either way, this call to get FNC off the air, man, that's jealousy on the part of the left.  They only WISH they could get even half the ratings that FNC gets.

This was satire

Clearly, this was satire and all of us dummies on the right didn't pick up on it. /sarc

The funny thing is, I'd bet real money that Rockefeller would use the tired satire defense.  I mean, it's what all lefties do when they say something incredibly stupid.

Rich-boy Rockefeller finds free speech tiresome

Submitted by Galvanic on Fri, 11/19/2010 - 5:51pm.

Our American aristocracy  --  the Rockefellers, the Kennedys, the Kerrys, et al -- are no longer amused.  All this free speech for and by the peasant class has gone on way too long, and it''s high time the Federal government put a stop to it.

The people of West Virginia

Submitted by TheHistorian on Fri, 11/19/2010 - 6:00pm.

The people of WV should be ashamed of this man as their Senator and replace him with someone who believes in freedom as they do.

This guy (Rockefeller) is as big of a pig as his Grandfather (John D.). I think the government should conficate every dime of his wealth and give it to the poor. And make him pay in "imputed" income tax based on 38% of his estimated lifestyle.  Maybe he will like paying taxes.

Mr. Rockefeller is ignoring the fact that the freedom in this country is what he should be protecting as a US Senator, so as such he is instead protecting his political ideas which are more like Adolph Hitler's than anything which can be credited to GW Bush.

The Left politicians in this country is a bunch of slimeballs.  They do not promote the same rules for themselves that they want others to follow.  Look at how Nancy bleated to Denny Hastert for "minority rights" in the House, only to kill the same rules once SHE became speaker.

The people in WV need to wake up that this man is a moral charlatans.  Unless that is what they  really want.  They have not elected people of sterling character to be their Senators (Byrd, Rockefeller, now Manchin).

Submitted by TheHistorian on Fri, 11/19/2010 - 6:43pm.

Let's start with the next guys below them, and keep shutting down until the same viewership is gone.  That ought to shut off at least a couple major networks, not just the vainglorious MSNBC.

MSNBC goes then ...

Submitted by okiehawk44 on Fri, 11/19/2010 - 7:19pm.

Let me try to follow Rockefeller's thinking here. First you have GE dump Schultz (wanted to do that bigtime anyway) then on to Olbermann (we'll pick him up on the big network NBC he has those "photos" you know) and of course Maddow (we'll put him in as an analyst on Brian's show) then demand (I mean DEMAND) that FOX News be cancelled (we don't really give a damn where those conservatives go) and then we celebrate.  Second...(we don't really have a second because just getting rid of FOX News is enough)

The Censorious Left Strikes Again

Submitted by Tenebrous on Fri, 11/19/2010 - 8:19pm.

Once again, a leftist gets tired of opposing views and so what does he do? Debate them? Discuss them? No, he wants to GET RID OF THEM. Sure, Rockefeller is an elitist/establishment moron, but all the angry turds in Media Matters, Move. On, Code Pink, and the Obama Zombies all have the same idea -- shut down the opposition, and once opposition has been made illegal, then they can start up the firing squads and gas chambers.

Yeah, try saying that again when your sister organization, the Parents Television Council, quotes him in support of exactly what you are against:

"“We commend the leadership of Senators Rockefeller, Inouye, and Stevens for their support and affirmation that profanity and indecent images should be prohibited on the publicly owned airwaves at times when children are in the audience.  Congress needs to reinstate the FCC’s authority to uphold the decency law after the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals’ ruling that so-called ‘fleeting’ expletives were appropriate to air on the public airwaves.  We urge the full Senate to pass this bill before Christmas to ensure that children are not bombarded by indecent material in the New Year,” said PTC President Tim Winter." (http://www.parentstv.org/PTC/news/release/2007/1206.asp)

Care to explain that one, yes?

Yeah, but what about the rest...

Submitted by Phryj1 on Fri, 11/19/2010 - 10:22pm.

...of the predominantly left-wing media? While MSNBC may the the farthest left, as Newsbusters has shown over the years, most of the other networks are still overwhelmingly leftist.

Also, it's a false equivalence. Fox News is by no means the right-wing couterpart to MSNBC. Yes, their opinion and analysis shows feature more or less conservative hosts, but they welcome a diversity of dissenting viewpoints. Also, their actual news reporting is about as objective as you can get, and their star anchor Sheppard Smith is a Democrat.

MSNBC on the other hand, is shamelessly, unabashedly far-left across the board. Even the token "conservatives" they have are about as liberal as you can get and are only considered "conservative" by virtue of the fact that all the other hosts are hard-line leftists. Their political lean permates their news reporting in addition to their op-ed type programs. They also spew some of the most vicious and hateful bile you can see on TV, in addition to skewing and twisting facts to suit their needs. Maddow and Olbermann are on record as saying MSNBC is completely justified in doing this.

Fox News is news and opinion. MSNBC is propaganda and opinion. False equivalence.

Progressives seem to be completely averse to facts and logic. Apparently, reality has a conservative bias.

Other trades, past and future, the leftists think are "fair"

Submitted by ThisnThat on Fri, 11/19/2010 - 10:34pm.

Just for comparisons,

  • Giving Czechoslovakia to Hitler in return for "peace in our lifetime", 1938
  • 50 million dead children since 1973 for "a woman's convenience"
  • Sexual assault of 1.5 million people/day to remove 130 items from airplanes this past year
  • The loss of 60 seats in Congress to totally take over control of healthcare (pass the bill first -- then find out what was in it)

I really don't need to suffer any more tradeoffs from the left.
