Vanity Fair Targets News-Making GOP Men in Sexy 'Beefcake' Calendar

By Erin R. Brown | October 25, 2010 | 17:30

Vanity Fair’s attacked conservative men with its latest political satire: a soft-core pornographic, borderline homosexual and obviously photoshopped “Official 2010-2011 Republican Beefcake Calendar.”  Humorous perhaps, but also an attack on those candidates and certainly not the magazine’sfirst jab at Republicans and conservatives.

In an effort to possibly shift “GOP tidal-wave” dialogue or to simply make depressed Democrats laugh, Vanity Fair has showcased a racy, crotch-shot-laden calendar of headline-making GOP men just one week prior to the important 2010 midterm elections. While only a few of the photographs actually improve the image of the Republican men, by making them look extremely masculine with rippling muscles, most of the photos mock the men by photo-shopping their heads onto men in arguably “gay” poses.

The most shocking photo was that of a naked Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele seen creeping in a middle-earth-type creature pose, complete with gnarled hands and goofy expression. Thank goodness for a perfectly placed left thigh, or else the photograph of Steele would be x-rated.

With the calendar containing a 2008 GOP presidential hopeful John McCain’s crotch-holding photograph and conservative pundit Glenn Beck’s snake-skin belted, tighty-whitey donning booty shot, its safe to say Vanity Fair was outright attacking the GOP heavy-hitters. For one, there appears to be no wimpy, “Men of the Left Aisle” calendar. But it is par for the course for Vanity Fair to tow the lefty line.

In fact, the magazine has attacked conservative Sarah Palin in the past. Vanity Fair author Michael Joseph Gross penned a 10,600 word hit piece on Sarah Palin in which he claimed the former 2008 Vice Presidential candidate lies about everything. Vanity Fair is also home to the Christian-bashing, atheist columnist Christopher Hitchens, whose work includes a book in which he espouses the view that Mother Theresa's good deeds were performed simply to further a political agenda, and not morally-driven. Vanity Fair was also behind the recent Sean Penn interview of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.

Submitted by Radical1979 on Mon, 10/25/2010 - 6:26pm.

This is a magazine geared towards adults?  How pathetic.  As usual, nothing to fight with as far as the issues, so they resort to juvenile stunts.

By the way, Todd Palin didn't need their help.  They're just jealous that not only is Sarah Palin a looker, Todd is too.

Submitted by Jer on Mon, 10/25/2010 - 6:52pm.

The sources are mostly a succession of conservative and far right websites which keep referring to a "determination letter" by Obama, but--unless I missed it--never link it or publish it.  It would be nice if they did so.

Yes, You Did Miss It

Submitted by stratman on Mon, 10/25/2010 - 8:57pm.

SoL's link didn't link directly to the determination letter. Yes, the forced progression to get to the letter is messy and unnecessary.  BUT, they did leave all the bread crumbs necessary for you to find it.

  1. SoL's link, which links to
  2. Canada Free Press article, which links to
  3. the author of #2's own website article, which links to
  4. Refugee Resettlement Watch web site, where you will find the original (?) source article (after clicking on "Previous Entries" to go to the previous/older page), which links, finally, to
  5. the President's Determination Letter.

I hope you own a GPS and keep your tank filled with gasoline.  Orienteering may not be your strongest skill.

Submitted by Jer on Tue, 10/26/2010 - 12:38am.

You've had your fun.  Generally the burden rests with the one initiating the claim to provide appropriate sourcing rather than it being the responsibility of the lib respondent to wade through a swamp of noxious right-wing websites on a scavenger hunt for corroborating authority.

My work here is carefully measured.  So many conservative myths to smush.  So little time.

Jer:

I agree that the determination letter should have been linked directly in the daughter articles, except for maybe the first branched post that refered back to the original article.  That said, it was a short hop and skip to get to the requisite link for anyone wanting to.

These posts were on amateur web sites.  Their lazyiness in directly linking source material is quite amateurish compared to the Left Wing MSM professionals who make spurious claims as legitimate news every day without any reference link at all or to Left Wing amateur opinion propaganda sites.

At least these Right Wing amateur sites were correct in their claim and gave reference, albeit nested, to back it up.

Now, where's my latte and shortbread biscuits?

Speaking of hippies and organic wingnuts, I bought some (real) maple syrup yogurt (Brown Cow) along with a Strawberry & Cream cake from Whole Foods.  Awesome!

How low can the Leftmedia go?

Submitted by Mary Louise Turner on Mon, 10/25/2010 - 6:45pm.

The Looney Left has really become unhinged as the election draws nearer.  This is just the latest, most childish example of its meltdown; how low can the Leftmedia go?.

I knew this rag mag had a leftist bent almost as bad as Rolling Stone's, but to trash Republicans in such a vile manner, and to have it printed a week before the elections (on purpose, of course) is just stomach churning.
