Daily Beast: Wal-Mart’s Morals Victimize Kanye

By Erin R. Brown | October 20, 2010 | 16:06

Shoplifting. Nudity. Explicit Lyrics. Nazi Symbolism. None are tolerated by Wal-Mart, and after Kanye West’s new explicitly sexual album cover for “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”was considered indecent by the store, Tina Brown’s website, “The Daily Beast,” threw a hissy fit on his behalf.

“In all honesty ... I really don't be thinking about Wal-Mart when I make my music or album covers #Kanyeshrug!” This tweet, from Grammy-winning recording artist Kanye West was met with open arms from the editors at The Daily Beast who lined up with West and reassured him that he wasn’t the only “victim” of Wal-Mart.

Among those featured in the “blacklisted” gallery was none other than hot Hollywood actress Megan Fox. Fox, who was caught shoplifting a lipgloss from a Florida Wal-Mart store in her teenage years, has been banned from that particular store, and it’s the punishment suffered for that crime that earned her a top spot among the “victims.”

But Fox is in good company, if you consider outspoken political activist, singer/songwriter Sheryl Crow a worthy ally. Crow’s 1996 self-titled debut album included lyrics to the song “Love is a Good Thing” that implicate Wal-Mart for the sale of a murder weapon. “Watch out sister/Watch out brother/Watch our children as they kill each other/with a gun they bought at the Wal-Mart discount stores.” After Crow refused to change the lyrics, Wal-Mart refused to carry the album in its stores.

Other alleged “victims” include Nazi paraphernalia consumers. In 2006, Wal-Mart publicly apologized and issued a recall of a particular t-shirt that, unbeknownst to Wal-Mart, contained a skull-and-crossbones type image sometimes associated with the Nazi’s 3rd SS division.

In 2003, in an effort to comply with “customer concerns” Wal-Mart banned the sale of men’s magazines Maxim, Stuff and FHM.

After the 2003 refusal to stock soft-core pornographic magazines, it is no surprise that Wal-Mart and its customers would object to West’s “artistic” rendition of himself in a sexual position with a naked, winged Phoenix.  Considering that Wal-Mart stores sell clothing, toys, electronics and other kid-friendly products, the store’s decision to keep objectionable material off its shelves and out of eye-sight of innocent children is to be commended, not criticized.

I really don't be thinking

Submitted by Van Halen on Wed, 10/20/2010 - 4:12pm.

I really don't be thinking that Kanye is too happy about this no matter what he be saying since Wal Mart is a huge presence in the retail world and getting your product into Wal Mart is a big deal.

You forgot about the "Green

Submitted by Guttermouth's Return on Wed, 10/20/2010 - 4:16pm.

You forgot about the "Green Day Whines" story you did last year.  They too pulled their records from WalMart in response to the company's request they edit their album.

While I respect WalMart's right to sell and censor whatever material it wishes, I can't picture myself ever making a purchase from such a company.

Well, apparently, if you picture yourself naked you will be in complete agreement with Walmart.  :)

Keeping objectionable

Submitted by Guttermouth's Return on Wed, 10/20/2010 - 4:41pm.

Keeping objectionable material away from children is not to be criticized, but refusing to sell albums with adult lyrics goes a step too far.  Plenty of artists over time have released albums with alternate artwork for just this reason (check out the Dead Kennedys H.R.Geiger cover of Frankenchrist).

But we still have Tipper-stickers on all of the records that the PMRC deems adult, so as long as companies like WalMart follow the rules regarding parental advisory warnings, adult material will still be kept out of the hands of children.

Companies make decisions

Submitted by Radical1979 on Wed, 10/20/2010 - 4:50pm.

Companies make decisions about what type of merchandise to carry all the time.  Would you consider it  objectionable for a store to carry the music of white supremacists?  I doubt it.  Same thing here, a value decision.

Submitted by ricklail on Wed, 10/20/2010 - 6:01pm.

Keep up your liberal rant about Wal Mart like all good liberals do. I won't have to run into you while I am shopping there. Wal Mart has done nothing to me or anyone in my family. I can't afford to buy the same foreign made clothes at the mall in the high dollar stores when I can get the same thing cheaper there. I can't afford to pay $13.99 for a 12 pack of Scott toilet paper at Food Lion when I can get the same thing at Wal Mart for $8.99. I check prices, I know I can get a lot more bang for my grocery bucks at Wal Mart than any of the chain grocery stores around.

I go to Sam's too on occasion. One other thing. A half gallon jar of Mt. Olive dill pickles strips. Food Lion $5.32 Wal Mart S3.98 Food Lion does not pay their employees any better than Wal Mart.

The only gripe I have with Wal Mart is they have all those check outs and never ahve them all open at the same time but the groacery store does that too.

It is fun to watch the wierd people that come through there. People of Wal Mart

Submitted by ricklail on Wed, 10/20/2010 - 4:17pm.

i had a good friend that worked security for Belks many years ago. If you got caught shoplifting in one of their stores you were banned from any Belks for life. Megan Fox ought to feel good that it was only the Wal Mart in Florida and not a Belks.

I don't know how Belk kept up with it but I was there one day when I saw my buddy go to the door and send a young lady back out. He would never tell my how they knew. He just told me she was banned.

Kayne West is worthless toe jam to me. I hope my grandkids don't listen to him. Thank you Wal Mart

Submitted by Radical1979 on Wed, 10/20/2010 - 4:48pm.

Kudos to WalMart.  They are choosing values over profit.  I loved the fact that when my kids were younger we could allow them to buy whatever they wanted to in the store.  It didn't invovle a fight over what might be on the CD.  There are plenty of other places to buy music.

My question is, why is a company that makes decisions to be "green" considered wonderful, but a company that makes decisions to be family friendly is excortiated by the left.

Advanced Medicine
A doctor from Israel says: "In Israel the medicine is so advanced that we cut off a man's testicles; we put them into another man, and in 6 weeks he is looking for work."

The German doctor comments: "That's nothing, in Germany we take part of the brain out of a person; we put it into another person's head, and in 4 weeks he is looking for work."

A Russian doctor says: "That's nothing either. In Russia we take out half of the heart from a person; we put it into another person's chest, and in 2 weeks he is looking for work."

The U.S. doctor answers immediately: "That's nothing my colleagues, you are way behind us....in the USA we grabbed a
person with no brains, no heart, and no balls....we made him President of the United States, and now the whole country is looking for work!"
