MSNBC's Mike Barnicle Oddly Tries to Suggest Sen. Ron Johnson Should Talk Compromise on Debt Like It's a Home Loan

By Eric Ames | July 19, 2011 | 14:01

A  A

MSNBC contributor Mike Barnicle perpetuated the liberal line of Republican obstinacy over the debt ceiling on Tuesday's Morning Joe using a poor analogy to home buying. "Did you ever compromise or negotiate on the price with the then owner of the home?" asked Barnicle.

The Wisconsin Senator responded by noting that Republicans actually are willing to come to the table. "I'm happy to work with anybody who's serious about fixing the problem," said Johnson. "But the fact of the matter that the President comes to the table three week before - about a month before the deadline, and insists on raising taxes, and let's face it, he couldn't raise taxes when his party was in total control of the government."

Johnson could have also pointed out that the home buying analogy is useless; the debt ceiling debate is an argument among borrowers, not an argument between buyer and seller.

Barnicle continued to press Johnson on his refusal to agree to tax hikes: "Let's talk about raising taxes then." Johnson pointed out that Democrats have not come forth with any meaningful proposals. "I'm happy to close loopholes. Show me the real loopholes, show me the real deal as opposed to legitimate business expenses, because that's what they're normally talking about."

Barnicle then tried to play the class warfare card by throwing hedge funds and capital gains tax rates in Johnson's face. "Hedge funds - lot of money. Billions of dollars. You get taxed capital gains rate, 15%. Why not tax it as income?" asked Barnicle. Johnson again had to return to the point that the Democrats have not proposed any serious solutions. "Has the President proposed that? Is it on a piece of paper?" asked Johnson.

Johnson then explained why the process was moving as slowly as it has been:

"First of all we haven't passed a budget in the United States Senate in two years. The Democrats are in total control of the Senate. I don't have a whole lot of power in the Senate to be proposing these things that don't even get brought up. The House actually did pass a budget. The Democrats simply refuse to put their plan on the table because they don't want to have the American people see what their plan is. Their plan primarily is to raise taxes.

I'm willing to eliminate loopholes. I think most of my Republican colleagues are willing to eliminate loopholes. Show us what they are. They aren't willing to show us. They just demagogue the issue. They talk about this, you know, $3 worth of spending for every dollar increase in taxes. What $3 in spending cuts? It's smoke and mirrors, there are going to be spending cuts that are going to occur 12 years in the future, that's not a serious plan."

A transcript of the exchange, which aired at 7:47 am on Tuesday's Morning Joe, follows.

MSNBC
MORNING JOE
07/19/2011

7:47 am EDT

MIKE BARNICLE: Senator, did you remember when you first bought your home? Senator? Do you remember buying your first home?

SEN RON JOHNSON: Sure, sure I do, Mike.

BARNICLE: Did you ever compromise or negotiate on the price with the then owner of the home?

JOHNSON: See, Mike, I'm happy to work with anybody who's serious about fixing the problem. But the fact of the matter that the President comes to the table three week before - about a month before the deadline, and insists on raising taxes, and let's face it, he couldn't raise taxes when his party was in total control of the government. Now he's - so again, I'm willing to work with anybody who's going to negotiate in good faith.

BARNICLE: Let's talk about raising taxes then.

JOHNSON: Let's talk about closing loopholes. I'm happy to close loopholes. Show me the real loopholes, show me the real deal as opposed to legitimate business expenses, because that's what they're normally talking about.

BARNICLE: How about this one?

JOHNSON: That's what they're talking about.

BARNICLE: How about this one, Senator, and take this back to main street in Oshkosh and ask the people you encounter in main street in Oshkosh. Hedge funds. Hedge funds - lot of money. Billions of dollars. You get taxed capital gains rate, 15%. Why not tax it as income?

JOHNSON: Mike, Mike, has the President proposed that? Is it on a piece of paper?

BARNICLE: Why don't you?

JOHNSON: Can I take a look at it?

BARNICLE: Why don't you propose it?

JOHNSON: Because, you know, first of all we haven't passed a budget in the United States Senate in two years. But, again, I'm willing to work with anybody. I'm willing to negotiate. It's smoke and mirrors, there are going to be spending cuts that are going to occur 12 years in the future, that's not a serious plan. Show us a serious plan. Do this in sort of the regular order. You know, to think, to think, to think that we can actually, you know, prepare a budget and negotiate a budget, a $3.7 trillion a year budget behind closed doors with a few folks doing it? It is absurd. It's silly, it's crazy.

Submitted by cobokat on Tue, 07/19/2011 - 3:47pm.

I watch MJ to see what the others are saying but lately since they were scolded by this corrupt administration and given their marching orders I can barely watch it anymore. I think anyone who is even remotely conservative or any Republican should not go on MSNBC or any mainstream network. It's obvious that no matter what happens the media will stand by BO and do everything they can to get him re-elected. This morning they had a writer from the Nation Magazine on and he was talking about secret CIA camps in Somalia-as a leftist liberal even he was appalled by BO and his illegal wars yet he said no one would cover this story-Joe and Mika seemed very uncomfortable but Joe did say the media has given BO a blank check.

I am 3 days behind, so I'm checking NB to see if it's even worth it to watch them.

btw - when Halperin was "grounded" for telling how he perceived the behavior of Pres. "I Won" Joe "suddenly" went on vacation and I didn't see any chatter on it, I knew they threw that poor guy under the bus. I didn't always agree with Halperin, but he *did* try to be fair and honest.

when you have the time check out the vids and/or transcripts featuring Sen. Johnson, also the one with Chuck Todd, and the two which picture Joe and Mika in the first frame.  Plenty of balanced debate. Repubs are criticized, but lots of GOP support and spokespersons.  Note that Scarborough identifies with tea partiers and doesn't spare Obama.  It's stuff you generally won't see at NB.

Thanks Jer - Hubby took the week off so I'm watching lots of *interesting* shows, mostly on the History, Travel, Discovery, and NatGeo channels.

With a few "reality" shows thrown in to set my teeth on edge! I know those shows are not indicative of the norm, but are you kidding me with all the cursing and fighting??? Yuck.

I prefer "civilized" arguments, TYVM, lol!!!

Shut up.

Did you ever question Chris "Waitress Sandwich" Dodd on his "mortgage negotiations"?

Did you ever ask John Kerry if he has paid the taxes on his 7 million dollar yacht that he bought in another country? Or the loopholes he tried to take advantage of by registering the yacht in Rhode Island where there are no taxes, effectively screwing the "children" out of precious "educational funds raised through taxation"? The things he proposes to be in support of?

I'm pretty sure that you NEVER scrutinized John Edwards for his past involvement and PROFIT from hedge funds! Where were you on the illegitimate bastard child story? Is that kid another johnny be good tax loophole now?

"I'll gladly give you a tax cut Friday for a tax raise today."

The complaint of the Tea Partiers is that these compromises have always pushed the cuts -- a.k.a the pain -- off into later years, and when we arrive at that point, the Congress then ignores the cuts.

Come to think of it, that's how Social Security works (or doesn't).

The can has been kicked down the road long enough. We're running out of road.

And that's how the game gets played

Submitted by Galvanic on Wed, 07/20/2011 - 9:27pm.

As the Gang of Six recommends $3.7 trillion in spending cuts coupled with $1 trillion in raising revenue (taxes), watch for the slight of hand, otherwise known as creative accounting.

Remember, they are talking about over the next ten years, so divide the numbers by a factor of ten to see how much they are really addressing. . . an average of $370 billion in cuts and $100 billion in revenue raising. Most of the spending cuts will be achieved through historically overly optimistic targets for reducing government waste that never get realized.

This does not mean that we start shrinking the national debt; it merely reduces the rate of annual deficit increase, because they won't balance the budget. In other words, we'll postpone economic collapse.

But it's worse than that. They'll cut less in the early years and save the heaviest cutting for the "out years" -- in other words, beyond four years from now.

So, we'll come to this point again, but the debt will be worse, and they'll tell us that the prposed spending cuts are to draconian, and we'll have to kill the elderly and eat babies, and the public will be appallled and let them raise the debt ceiling again.

We have to change the game. Why not now?

"Did you ever compromise or negotiate on the price with the then owner of the home?"

Yes, as a matter of fact, I did. I negotiated a $7,000 decrease in the asking price. The comprise was made by the previous homeowner. If that price hadn't decreased to what I felt was acceptable, I never would have bought this house. But what does that have to do with my credit rating? What does that have to do with how much money I could possibly borrow to pay for a home? Nothing, nothing at all.

Morning Shmoe was discussing Elizabeth Warren and her departure from Washington. They played a clip of her whining that she had to work 14 hour days in Washington and all she wanted to do was go home to (Socialist) Massachusetts.. Alas, In comes Barnacle, and he immediately starts trumpeting her to run against Scott Brown. His solution is for her is to send her back to Washington as soon as she gets home.

I swear, this guy is about as irritating as jock itch on a guy with no arms.

Why doesn't the GOP House leadership demand 10 trillion in spending cuts and the elimination of all federal taxes or they will refuse to raise the debt ceiling. After all, their position is "no compromise" and apparently, contrary to the media hysteria, the consequences of not raising the ceiling won't be so bad anyway. Might as well shoot for the moon.
