Boston Globe Keeps Anti-Catholic Reputation Thriving
Imagine if a newspaper disproportionately and endlessly harped upon decades-old crimes committed by black people. Even if the stories were all true, people would be rightfully outraged at the paper’s overt racism in consistently and repeatedly targeting the past misdeeds of people of one particular race. The public would never allow such blatant bigotry.
Such a comparison can be applied to the Boston Globe and the Catholic Church, except this bigotry is real, and there is no public outrage.
Today (Sun., 11/20/11), the Globe has a ridiculous, top-of the-front-page, 2,444-word article bashing the Catholic Church.
Three months ago, in August, the Archdiocese of Boston released a sweeping list on the Internet of all of its priests who were accused of abuse. Much to the consternation of many priests, the list even included those who have been exonerated.
Today’s article profiles complaints by critics of the Church that the archdiocese’s lists did not include the names of accused members of religious orders and members of other dioceses. Fair enough.
But today’s Globe article is remarkably dishonest for a number of reasons.
First, the objection by Church critics (about not releasing the names of religious order priests) was already widely aired and reported three months ago. Today’s Globe article simply rehashes this exact same issue with the addition of some different names. In fact, the themes and content of today’s hit piece are virtually indistinguishable from an article in August – by the very same Globe writer!
Second, the article profiles the case of a Rev. Czeslaw “Chet” Szymanski. The article quotes an anonymous accuser to give the false impression that the man was a known abuser. The Globe makes no mention of the fact that Fr. Chet was killed in a car crash in 1987 without any public accusations against him whatsoever, and his first accuser did not surface until 2009. (In nearly two decades of relentlessly pursuing the issue of abuse in the Catholic Church, the Globe has never cared to fully explore the issue of abuse accusations against previously unblemished and long-deceased clerics.)
Third, the article features a shifty individual by the name of Terence W. McKiernan, who runs a high-profile web site called BishopAccountability.org.
BishopAccountability.org will publicly post the names, pictures, and cases of accused priests, no matter how flimsy the allegations may be. A lone individual could invoke the discredited theory of “repressed memory” to lodge an allegation against a long-deceased priest with a previously unblemished record, and BishopAccountability.org will still do everything in its power to post the priest’s name and picture on its site as if the cleric were a convicted child molester.
Again, this dubious practice has never seemed to be an issue that concerns the Boston Globe.
(By the way, I personally busted McKiernan and his site a couple months ago for dishonestly violating their own posted policy of not posting the cases in which accusers have recanted their claims. Readers can learn about this episode.)
We must demand justice and compassion for victims of clergy abuse. This is not optional. Abusive priests devastated countless lives. They pulverized the faith of legions with their revolting, criminal, and sinful acts.
But fairness and perspective have long gone out the window in the reporting of the Catholic Church abuse narrative. Egregious prejudice and bigotry have taken over.
Anti-Catholicism is alive and well at the Boston Globe.

I'm not gonna defend the Globe, but that's what's going to happen as I comment on this article. I realize the writer may be tired of hearing about the Catholic church and the child abuse problems it let go on and on for so many years, but to sweep it under the rug and forget about it would only let its ugly head rise again. The old cliche is true. "Those that forget history are doomed to repeat it". The Catholic church has many problems that are not reported in the newspapers and the news networks. This problem has been a problem for years and years in the church. Why are you trying to make the awareness of it go away? I'll assume you're Catholic. I have lots of friends and family that are Catholic and there are many Catholics I admire in the public eye. The child abusing priests don't have any affect on what I think of these people. The doctrines of the church are more to blame for the inordinate amount of abuse that goes on in the church. Not allowing a priest to marry is wrong. Many of the apostles were married in the Bible. Priests were always allowed to marry in Gods church throughout the entirety of the Bible. Telling someone they must be chaste their entire lives when God designed man to enjoy sex (with a woman, I don't know why many of these men liked boys) is unjust and should be discontinued. I know this type of thing happens in other denominations and other religions, but never in the same numbers or percentages as it does in the Catholic church. Newsbusters has a habit of digging up stories that are months and sometimes years old to make a point about a conservative issue. Why are you badmouthing someone with differing views from you for using the same tactics? This gives us conservatives the label of hypocrite, and we don't need help looking bad to the rest of the media out there. They already make up enough stuff about us.

Let me just point out something to you. The Pope is talking about a very important issue. The Pope did not say pedophilia was normal, he is saying that there is an element of society trying to push for normalization. Docsam and I have posted on this subject as well for many months now. There are those in our society and those around the world attempting to "normalize" pedophilia. The APA is currently even considering removing pedophilia from the DSM. If that happens, your argument loses a bit of steam because then, pedophilia will be accepted throughout society, the courts, and psychiatry. How then are you going to blame the POPE?
There is systemic failure in many institutions and large organizations, such as sports, colleges, Boy Scouts, Teachers and educators that are guilty of that silence and acceptance of perverse behavior and has been ongoing for decades. As our society loses its sense of value for human life, (abortion) that opens the door for even fewer boundaries of decency.

Read the language carefully friends, Pierre tells us that the accuser gave a “false impression” that the man was a known pedophile; and that he died in 1987 without any “public accusations” against him. Back to the real world for a wee bit, in 1987 the American Catholic Church, and this has been documented on numerous occasions by a litany of sources, was in full circle damage control of relocating child molesters and covering up their crimes. There would not be ANY public accusations on the record in 1987 because the sex abuse scandal did not break until the 1990’s. Pierre than has the audacity to diminish the claim of the alleged victim by stating, Well, if it was so bad why did you wait until 2009 to come forward. Pierre goes on to attack the victim once more not only with personal attacks but now bringing in faulty theories to attack the victim’s credibility:

A contradiction right from the get-go. Really sets the tone for the rest of your asinine comment.
I realize the writer may be tired of hearing about the Catholic church and the child abuse problems it let go on and on for so many years, but to sweep it under the rug and forget about it would only let its ugly head rise again. The old cliche is true. "Those that forget history are doomed to repeat it".
No, what we're tired of hearing about are unjust stories -- stories that name priests who never abused -- and stories that act as if the Catholic Church is 1) the only institution in the history of the world to have this problem and 2) deserves to be destroyed because of it. New allegations? Actual evidence of abuse? Heck yeah -- report it. But rehashing an old story lacking all journalistic integrity? What a waste of time and a revelation of the Globe's priorities.
The Catholic church has many problems that are not reported in the newspapers and the news networks.

This problem has been a problem for years and years in the church. Why are you trying to make the awareness of it go away? I'll assume you're Catholic. I have lots of friends and family that are Catholic and there are many Catholics I admire in the public eye. The child abusing priests don't have any affect on what I think of these people.
Clearly your view is altered by this. You are not advocating awareness of the abuse, but defending smears. When you defend smears, you are complicit in smearing the Catholics you know.
The doctrines of the church are more to blame for the inordinate amount of abuse that goes on in the church. Not allowing a priest to marry is wrong. Many of the apostles were married in the Bible. Priests were always allowed to marry in Gods church throughout the entirety of the Bible. Telling someone they must be chaste their entire lives when God designed man to enjoy sex (with a woman, I don't know why many of these men liked boys) is unjust and should be discontinued.
I'm sure you've heard of Penn State, right? Or how about the fact that public school teachers sexually abuse students at a rate far greater than Catholic priests? Sandusky could marry, so can public school teachers. Yet both of them sexually abused.
The reason so many priests abused boys should be obvious, genius. Most of the priests had homosexual tendencies. Married clergy isn't going to solve *that* problem.
This entire argument about the Church always -- always -- boils down to undermining theology. People like you, and the Globe, don't -- at the end of the day -- really give a care about the victims. All you care about is using this scandal to argue against Catholic theology and cheer liberal Catholic theology.
Let me tell you something buddy: The people who abused and who covered it up, were by and large liberal. They supported married clergy, gay rights, abortion, feminism, etc. The sexual abuse of children is absolutely rooted in this left-wing theology and not those faithful to teaching of the Church.
I know this type of thing happens in other denominations and other religions, but never in the same numbers or percentages as it does in the Catholic church.
Actually, it happens in roughly the same numbers. The skewed media coverage (which you're totally fine with) makes it seem more prevalent. Also, it happens far more in public schools than the Church. In fact, a 2004 study indicates abuse in public schools is likely 100 TIMES more prevalent than in Catholic churches. But I notice a complete and total lack of caring about this on your part.
Newsbusters has a habit of digging up stories that are months and sometimes years old to make a point about a conservative issue. Why are you badmouthing someone with differing views from you for using the same tactics?
I have never seen a Newbusters story that randomly digs up old news to make a point. Links to previous stories -- to highlight a pattern of bias in the media -- and stories that are only recently brought to Newsbusters' attention, yes. Old rehashes, no. This is your bias shining through.
This gives us conservatives the label of hypocrite, and we don't need help looking bad to the rest of the media out there. They already make up enough stuff about us.

I usually get into it with individuals like Henry Clay and other anti-Catholics who love to use the pedophile scandal to prove how the Church is evil and that the Pope is a monster. This is getting old (and by saying this I in no way condone sex abuse of any kind) but let's review one more time.
A - Numerous studies have found that the incidence of child abuse is no higher among Catholic Priests than it is among clergy of other denominations. The difference is that the Church has a centralized authority that keeps track of all the clergy while ministers and Rabbis funciton as independent contractors moving from congregation to congregation with no paper trail of their actions and no ability to get a picture of the full extent of the problem.
B - True pedophiles select their victims from pre pubescent children of either sex. The priests in question overwhelmingly were involved with post pubescent male victims. This sounds more like homosexual predators rather than pedophiles, but the political correctness at the Globe would never allow them to identify it as such.
C - The notion that allowing priests to marry will fix everyting is more politically correct claptrap. So what, a priest is sitting at his desk on a Friday and says " OK, quitting time - I'm going to go out and find a young boy - oh, wait a minute, I'm married...
Enough with the Catholic bashing. Let's identify the real problems and address them.

The real problem? It is how our society, media, etc. treats sex.
The other day a friend of mine and I were talking about this and he made a great observation. In a world, Western and Eastern world, where everyone is having casual sex, where movies portray pedophile as normal, or attraction between a young boy and his teacher or much older babysitter as normal (and these movies and TV shows make tens of millions of dollars). In a society where anything and everything goes when it comes to sex, it is a amazing that the same people who accept this, will then turn against the Church because .03% of priests acted as the secular world acts. They hate the Church, but applaud as open minded, accepting, as forward thinking the sexual actions of a depraved secular world.
There is also a vast and deep amount of ignorance out there. People love to be followers and believe anything that makes them comfortable in their dislike of something. I was reading a blog from a bishop, I think it was the bishop of St. Louis. He recounted a story of how a man approached him as he was walking in an airport. The man asked him if he was a Catholic priest, the bishop answered yes. The man then went on an anti-Catholic rant based on the priest pedophile reports. The bishop allowed him to finish, a 30 minute rant! (I would have jumped on the anti-Catholic guy!ut Talk about Love and Patients!). After the man was done, the bishop asked him if he could reply to his accusations. The man said yes. The bishop asked him if he hated secular men as much as he hates Catholic priests. The man answered no. The bishop armed with the internet sat in the terminal and was able to show unbiased statistics to the man proving that secular men commit the horrific crime of pedophile at a much more higher rate than priests. The bishop showed him NAMBLA and the ACLU and how homosexual men are child predators. The bishop also showed him how it is MARRIED men is the group which, sadly, commits the highest rate of pedophilia. The man had told the bishop he hated priests. After showing the man the unbiased statistics, the bishop asked him if he hated heterosexual married men. The men was brought to tears and apologized to the bishop for his deep hatred of priests based on completer and utter ignorance brought on by yellow journalism. The bishop and the man are now good friends and stay in touch.
Ignorace is what pushes the sillines that Henry Clay and the first guy who posted here push. They are either anti-Cahtolic who for whatever reason fell from the Church and they feel that the pedophila scandal justifies their leaving or they are atheists or protestants who hate the Church for the sake of hating Her. Regardless, it is based on ignorance and propaganda.
The problem too is that in the USA and some other Western nations, sadly, very Liberal individuals were admitted into the seminaries back in the 60s and 70s. In fact, as many people do not know, one of the ways to get out of serving in Vietnam was to join the seminary! Countless of Liberals who did not believe anything the Church taught/teaches lined up to become priests.
