And the Left Thinks ‘Landlord’ Is a Dirty Word?

Photo of Dan Gainor.

It reads like an anti-landlord piece from the Great Depression, but left-wing economist Dean Baker is actually trying to force people to become landlords.

Baker wrote an August 20 piece on Commondreams.org urging Congress to eliminate foreclosures and let homeowners live in those houses indefinitely.

You read that right (or left), Baker says the heck with the 5th Amendment protection against being "deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law." If someone borrowed too much or won't pay the mortgage, that's OK with Baker, the co-director of the left-wing economic think tank the Center for Economic and Policy Research.

The American Enterprise Institute's Ted Frank. Frank, who directs AEI's Liability Project, said that such a plan is "obviously problematic" and raises constitutional questions.

To Baker, who cares if you actually own property? He wants to turn homeowners who can't pay the bills into unhappy renters by allowing "moderate income homeowners the option to remain in their homes indefinitely as renters, paying the fair market rent."

Indefinitely even means after you have sold the property to someone else.

Another in the great left-wing strategies to end the American dream ... and the American economy.

The only thing you should feel when shooting insurgents is the rifle recoil.

Since When...

...did Democrats think the Constitution applies to economics?

Here's a must read on how FDR's policies prolonged the Depression.

What  mill did he buy his

What  mill did he buy his econ. degree from ?

Another liberal twit

Trying to come up with a plan that removes any responsibility and consequenses for making a bad decision, or in some cases, engaging in premeditated fraud.

The liberals do not believe that people ought to be land owners. They believe that is the government's role. Why? Because if you are a land owner, you have a much better chance of becoming independant from the government and self-suficient.

The day that "politician" became a career choice is the day we started losing the Republic

Ok. So after the

Ok. So after the government funds health care, social security, medicare, etc. etc. it should pay for housing too? Great! I want a 1969 Camaro convertable (blue or black). I know I read in the Constitution that it's my right. Pay up suckers!

Nortonalec

Left wing economist? ha!

No way can a left winger be an economist.  They are ALWAYS bashing capitolism.  Which just so happens to be how our economy works!

Same  thing with that twit about her book saying "down with capitolism".

The American Revolution Continued

Dean Baker era of me me me me me me

I honestly do wonder what kind of morons who never balanced a check book employ Dean Baker and allow him to come up with this communist fantasy garbage.

Why pay any bills? Just go out and buy everything on credit. Who cares that it is BAKERS BANK WHO LENDS HIS MONEY ON THESE MORTGAGES and when the bank goes tits up on the back 40 Baker will loose all his money too.

Frankly since Baker is giving away money, I want his money, his job, his home, his car, his.........well I want a look at his wife first and take her on trial run before wanting a woman married to a moron like this.

How he can not see that money and property represent someone else's invested work all across America and by giving it all away no one will have an incentive to work and the nation will result in........gee a Baker world where everyone steals what they want.

I will get in trouble for this, but what Baker is advocating is Mexicans in America. My cousin in Missouri is employed to mow lawns at houses that turn into jungles. The city sent him out to mow a jungle. When he knocked on the door 30 Mexicans came boiling out.....jumped in one car and left. He mowed the lawn.

Look at San Antonio the unsafe housing there where Mexicans in debt buy one lot and put on 4 houses which is a sure fire fire starter. If people do not have a respect for money, labor and community as Baker advocates in purchasing property and keeping it.....instead of just floating a loan at a bank, running the house down and then vacating it after they have gutted it.......there will be no incentive for banks to lend money, no one will put money into a bank as the bank will loose all the money on bad loans.......and that shuts down every local economy.

But I will be glad to teach Baker a lesson, he can start by giving me his bank account and credit cards, I have a love for some fishing equipment, a few guns and I might as well throw in a few traps to really drive his liberal posterior nuts in buying them redlands items.

.....and who says liberals don't love Iraq. They are trying to turn American into the same non economy every day.

I can't wait for all these

I can't wait for all these beatniks and hippies to retire and/or die off.

Soon, they'll be too old or too few to make headlines.

Want to see the result of

Want to see the result of Baker's "dream?"  Go to any local, state, or federal housing project and take a look.  Better take some armed protection with you, though.  You are likely to find drug pushers, prostitution, and pan handlers in and about the project.  And, that's before you even get inside someones "home", who it's obvious isn't interested in being a steward of the people's property.  There you are likely to find the worst kind of filth and vermin.

Want to find a half baked version of Baker's "dream?"  Go to any city where rent controls are in effect.  There you will find that the owners have all but abandoned their property.  Hey, why should they care?  They aren't getting a market return on their investment and probably haven't for years on end.

Presently, tax law rewards those that buy and then, rent real property.  The key to the equation is those that pay their rent on time and maintain the property as if it theirs.  Take away any part of the equation and all you will have left is the above projects.  Take away a fair market return and you get shabby rent controlled dwellings usually not fit for animals to live in.

By the way, these "social justice" nuts have "great" ideas, but are never around to face the consequences when their ideas are inacted.

Dean Baker shows yet again

Dean Baker shows yet again why liberals must never be in charge of economic policy in this country.  An ignorant and arrogant article written by an overpaid ivory tower snob.

Wow

They really have an "us versus them" mentality. Take from the "rich" and let the poor suffer no consequences for their poor decisions, since, after all, they were "suckered" into these loans they couldn't afford. What do you think the loan market will look like after this? You better have PERFECT credit before any bank will help you with a mortgage. The bank won't be able to recoup any of their loss if they can't evict and sell, so they will want ironclad assurance the loan will be paid. That'll kill any new loans to anyone who might possibly get in this position. So, the only ones who will make out are the ones who are already defaulted. After all, it's the bank's money, right? No, the bank loans out money based on deposits it carries. So, it's your neighbor's money, not the bank's.

and a foreclosure

isn't due process? A legal proceeding that can not take effect without hoops being jumped through?

A few notes Dan - RE: Dean Baker

A few notes Dan.

Based on the economic model of Bozo, Baker has done it again. Considering that many millions of folks - me included - would not find this a viable option. My house would definately rent for more than my mortgage payment.

If the forclosed future renter of one's own home get's stuck in this venture, as proposed by Baker, then in many cases it's the mortgage bank that stands to win, and the homeowner, to loose.

The bank would find itself in the postion of wanting to force this situation; after all, the bank could collect more, could raise the rent in the future (AR - adjustable rents), and the loan is never paid off, so the bank has become the proud owner of a permanent income stream.

Curious questions abound, however. Who is to pay the property taxes, the fire insurance, the flood insurance and the earthquake insurance? It's the landlord that takes care of these immense expenses.

Maintenence and repairs?

The new renter (prior homeowner) losses his mortgage interest deduction.

OK, so it's radical left wing thinking, but did Baker actually think through any of his proposal?  Has he given up any connection to the practice of economics for the quick fix of getting published on left wing shrill web sites?
