Dallas Morning News reporter Wayne Slater suggested conservatives in general and Fox News in particular are hypocrites for questioning why President Barack Obama failed to publicly observe the National Day of Prayer.

Slater wrote in his May 7 Religion Blog post:

Fox & Friends is on fire this morning stoking the controversy over President Obama not publicly observing the National Day of Prayer as predecessor George W. Bush did. Lots of graphics about how many churches are near the White House. Much gnashing of teeth over the president slighting godly expression. No mention of Matthew 6:5-6:

"And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret."

Based on Slater's timestamp and his note about the graphics, it appears his post was a response to the 7:08 AM EST discussion on "Fox & Friends" between co-hosts Steve Doocy, Gretchen Carlson and Brian Kilmeade:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

GRETCHEN CARLSON, co-host: Let's talk a little bit about the national prayer day today because you are not going to see-

BRIAN KILMEADE, co-host: How about right now?

CARLSON: -the White House, you're not going to see the White House observing this as they have in the past, at least for the past 8 years where they had an interfaith ceremony. Not just Christian religion, Jewish, Muslim, et cetera. You are not going to see that publicly now. The Obama administration has decided today that they will observe this day with proclamation but that the president himself will observe it in private. No doubt this is going to stir a lot of debate today about why this is happening.

STEVE DOOCY, co-host: Well, this is, there is a big difference between this president and the last one. George W. Bush went to church a lot. Went to that yellow church just across from Lafayette Square from the White House. This president, I don't believe has selected a church that he will attend regularly. You know, and while some might say, you know, why isn't he doing this? Because we are a religious nation when you look at the statistics. There are others on the other side of, for instance, the American Atheist, a group by that name, says that the president, forget about the fact that he is going to observe it privately at the White House, he shouldn't observe it at all. They say it is not his job to tell people to pray. That's their side of the story.

KILMEADE: Let's look at all the places the president could choose to go to church today or any day. And it took him awhile to pick a church. Here we go. That's the google map. Then you go click on it and you can see all the churches that will pop up.

DOOCY: Points of interest.

KILMEADE: You can zoom in, zoom out. These are the points of interest right there. I have them on my laptop.

CARLSON: See I thought the message of the Obama administration was to unify everyone together. And what better way to do that than to observe national prayer day. I just worry that this is like giving into the PC society that we live in today that we are going to appease the smaller groups of people instead of the masses. And I'm wondering if it's a political decision because president Bush did it and so president Obama is not going to do it. I hope that's not the case.

DOOCY: Well, Dan Gilgoff from US News and World Reports who was our guest about an hour ago, he said that observing in public could provide a PR problem for Obama's liberal base because they don't want him to appear as religious. What do you think? Email us right now friends@foxnews.com.

Doocy was referring to his discussion in the 6:00 EST hour with Michael Hall, pastor of The People's Church in Washington and Dan Gilgoff, senior writer at U.S. News and World Report.

Hall predictably expressed disappointment over the administration's decision, but Gilgoff stated he was "actually kind of surprised that they [the administration] are skipping this event given how eager this White House has been to showcase prayer" and that "Obama starts his public events outside the Beltway with local leaders delivering prayers." Gilgoff tempered his remarks by also noting, "this is a tradition that had only been at the White Hosue for the last eight years."

Gilgoff also hinted Obama's liberal base could have played a role in his decision to not participate in events this year, "You know, the White House has disgruntled a lot of liberals by embracing religious figures, Rick Warren at the Inauguration, and so you think of having James Dobson, you know the National Day of Prayer task force operates out of his Focus on the Family. Think about having him at the White House."

"Stoking the controversy" is a bit of stretch on Slater's part, especially as Doocy noted the anger from the atheists about Obama even issuing a proclamation, and as Gilgoff pointed out, the White House embraces prayer at other events.

A Scripture Reading for Obama on the National Day of Prayer

Friends...

Let us turn to Ecclesiastes 10:

My favorite verse is 10:2:

The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left.

Take the time to read this whole chapter... in light of our current administration, I think it will amaze you.

"And when you pray, you

"And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they
love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners,
that they may be seen by others......etc.

Oh, please.  So now we have a new standard of religiosity for Presidents?  The one is the most religious is the one who avoids public displays of religion?

There is nothing these people will not do to justify whatever this President does.

Myself, I am wondering why the Obamas do not attend church in DC yet.  Another example of his "not acting like the Pharisees?"

Or could it be that church-going in Chicago was just a means to an (political) end, as was pretty much everything back then?

Oh wait....it was!  Rev. Wright told him that he would do better as a community organizer if he was affiliated with a church!

They might say "Wow, that sucks!"  But at least they'll say "Wow!"  -Duff Goldman, the Ace of Cakes

So...

Do you suppose the WH press corp are issued BHO approved knee pads, do they have to supply their own or is it like the bowling alley and they rent them and an intern sprays them and puts them back in a rack after their softball games (er I mean press conferences?

Chicago

Yes, and he was there for services every single Sunday for 20 years.

Bow Down

Obama can bow to an Islamic king but not to the King of Kings.  Obama must hate it that Jesus already had the title that he wants.

I have read the Dallas

I have read the Dallas Morning News for years.  Wayne Slater is a kook fringe, militant fundamentalist leftist political activist and whack job conspiracy theorist.  The leftist freak has no idea what evidence is.  Read anything that he has ever written, and you will find Slater alleging deep, dark Karl Rove-inspired conspiracies and "whisper campaigns" carried out by the "religious right" without a shred of evidence to back up Slater's comical allegations.  Slater paired with fellow leftist nut job James Moore to pen the conspiratorial novel Bush's Brain.  When writing his stories (i.e., conspiratorial editorials) for the Dallas Morning News, Slater will often mention Karl Rove, and Slater actually identifies Rove in said "news" pieces as "Bush's Brain" without any mention that the only the people who call Rove "Bush's Brain" are the kookiest kooks of the leftist fringe and that Slater himself wrote a book with a fellow leftist loon entitled Bush's Brain.

Bible

It is always easy to use the Bible by Cherry-picking a verse or so, here and there to support ones position. Satan has even done it (probably more times than we could ever know). This is just another example of it; one I have seen many times to justfy an exclusion like this.

What this frankly is, is Obama's conscious effort to make consistent his position that "America is not a Christian nation". I agree with him at the moment but we will fix that in a couple more years.

He, on the other hand, will have the Rev Wright and other apostates to stand beside him and represent his position at "The Judgement". Good luck. You're gonna need it!

Christian nation

What this frankly is, is Obama's conscious effort to make consistent his position that "America is not a Christian nation". I agree with him at the moment but we will fix that in a couple more years.

Yes, but it was a Christian nation for approx. 175 years, founded by Christians. Our Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution are based on the principles within the Bible. Church services were held in the Capitol building on many Sundays for many years. The U.S. Congress has ordered Bibles printed for the people on two occasions. Thomas Jefferson coined the phrase "Separation of Church and State" which means, that our government should not interfere with religion.

Not sure of the context for "fix it." Do you mean "fix it" by getting rid of Obama in the next election or "fix it" by unlearning our heritage?

Wayne Slater

"Wayne Slater is a kook fringe, militant fundamentalist leftist political activist and whack job conspiracy theorist."

So, how do you feel about him?

"whisper campaigns" carried

"whisper campaigns" carried out by the "religious right"

Well, they're whispering campaigns; that's why no one's heard of them except this guy, with his super-duper hearing and decoding powers!

Isn't that convenient?  Just like "conspiracy theories"....that there is no evidence of them is proof that they do exist!!

They might say "Wow, that sucks!"  But at least they'll say "Wow!"  -Duff Goldman, the Ace of Cakes

Why would Obama want to honor this day?

He's probably got his trip to Hawaii on 9/24 already pencilled in so he can honor a day that celebrates his own religion:

HotAir noted the Boss'

HotAir noted the Boss' assertion on Fox yesterday that Obama is pandering to Atheists, and AllahPundit believes that he may be one himself. I don't know if that's the case, but you can't be too spiritual if you're an ardent supporter of abortion, as he is.

What I found interesting in the comments on HotAir was the number of people saying that it didn't really matter what his personal beliefs are. I would agree, I don't care what his personal belief system is so long as he has the mortal fortitude to lead fairly and honorably (of which I am not convinced.) What bothers me, is the lack of backbone from the President of the United States if he pandered to religious voters during the campaign and professed to be something he is clearly not. This, I think, goes beyond the normal politcal stump-speech promises- this is disception, fraud, and outright lying. So far, he has made nearly as much of a show about his lack of religious guidance as he did during the campaign about his great reverence for Christianity.

I think all we know at this point about Obama's religion is that he is clearly not Jewish.

Church And State.

The nation should not resemble a Theocracy by having a holy roller as its leader. It is best that the president keep his religious views private. If he is a non-believer it is his right to be one. A national day of prayer is an affront to 150 million Americans that want a separation between church and state.

A national day of prayer

A national day of prayer is an affront to 150 million Americans that want a separation between church and state.

There's probably 150 million Americans who'd like Liberals who are offended by something they don't believe in to move to France- but we can't all get what we want now, can we?

melpol

How does public prayer by the president violate the establishment clause?

 mvfreeman... it doesn't.

 mvfreeman... it doesn't.

No citizen's right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, or property is safe as long as Obama is President of the United States.

Which is why we haven't

Which is why we haven't heard back from mr melpol.

affront

So is the term "Holy Roller" but your belief system and political pesuasion is betrayed by the big indicator of hypocracy and your ignorance not to even recognize it.

That argument of yours will be quite popular with God, but to you, that statement has no meaning and I understand that.

You speak for 150 million?

I'd like to see where half of us elected you spokesman, melpol.

I think your talking out your ****.

Of course, you could try to back up your statement.

I hope he fails, too.

This view is inconsistent

This view is inconsistent with the views of the Founding Fathers, who regulary conducted prayer in the halls of Congress starting with the first.

It is also inconsistent with the Constitutional protections of the free exercise of religion written by these same founders.  i.e. !st Amendment: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;..."

Liberal / Progressive interpretations of the 1st Amendment read it to secularize the government, something that was never intended by its authors nor contained in its language.  These intrepretters seek to banish religion from public life.  In so doing, they ironically institutionalize Atheism as the official religion of the United States, exactly what the 1st Amendment forbids Congress to do.

Melpol = post and run

You posting moronic comments without staying to face the music is an affront to everyone with an IQ higher than 75.

Let me explain something to you, Gomer.  We do not live under anything that resembles a theocracy.  Any president who makes public his/her religious views is not prosyletizing or imposing his/her beliefs.

Now, before you get your panties in a knot and call me a Christian fanatic or a religious "rightist", I will say that I am neither.  I'm Jewish.  It's truly amazing that ignoramuses like you, Gomer, and Slater can so speedily pontificate on something you obviously despise: religion.

I think that the Messiah was talking about churlish dolts like you and Slater when he said: "Ye blind guides...ye strain at a gnat and swallow a camel."

For the MSM: In your pomp and all your glory, you're a poorer man than me.  As you lick the boots of death born out of fear.

Ian Anderson "Wind up"

Show me where "separation

Show me where "separation of church and state" is mentioned ANYWHERE in the Constitution.

A church in Philadelphia wrote a letter to Thomas Jefferson, complaining about the growth of government and how it could eventually infringe upon the rights of the church.    Jefferson replied that this could not be possible becuase they had in effect created a wall of separation between church and state.

This phrase was meant to alleviate fears of government intrusion, NOT fears of theocracy.

Also, Fisher Ames was one of our founding fathers and also the first superintendent of public education.  He firmly believed that the Bible should be and remain the PRIMARY text book in public education.

So, Einstein,  tell us again about this core Constitutional principal known as "separation of church and state".

When asked if he went to war with Iraq  to derail the impeachment vote:  “I don’t think any serious person would believe that any President would do such a thing." - President Clinton (Dec 1998).

good job Jerry

except it was to a church in Danbury, Connecticutt

Observe privately?  Like

Observe privately?  Like the note he left at the Wailing Wall?

"Fighters are fun but bombers make policy"

The proper question should

The proper question should be..why would a muslim worry about what the Judeo-Christians were up to?

Yeah, spare me the lecture ..I know he's 'not a muslim'.  He says so all the time.  If they could have found someone to rant a rascist lecture preceding the breakfast, he might of felt a bit more comfortable attending. But they couldn't, so he didn't.

consistent means no lumps

Barry is perfectly consistent as he has sent the message to the Muslim world that we are not a Christian Nation... so why would he go to Christian prayers? He's said that our Liberty and Blessings have not been inherited but come from our values.  Between this and what he is doing to our economy (think Germany and Argentina) why are people not upset? With the National Debt exceeding 15.5 Trillion in 2012 and annual interest payments of 1.5 Trillion our future may find us choosing between insolvency and hyperinflation.

What do you expect from a community organizer----

I guess that seals it, Obama was attending a racists church in Chicago , not out of religious conviction, but some sort of political expediency. Tell me, in 20 years Obama must have heard some preaching from Wright, but something tells me he wasn't there for a religious uplifting. His rejection of the National Day of Prayer indicates its lack of revolutionary and community conscious appeal to Obama, not enough of his own personal brand of arm waving Black Liberation Theology, you know, every thing is the WHHHIIIITE MAAANNNNS fault.
I didn't vote for the jackass----

Unfortunately, National

Unfortunately, National Prayer Day was the very same day graduation ceremonies were held for Obama, his staff and the members of the WH Press Corps who were accepting their diplomas from Political Clown College.

Otherwise, they would have attended. You betcha.

No citizen's right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, or property is safe as long as Obama is President of the United States.

No more pandering to evangelicals?

Now that the big Zero has the job, I guess it doesn't matter what evangelicals think of him any more.
