Obama's Contraception Plan Just a Cynical Wedge Issue Used by GOP, Suggests NYTimes

By Clay Waters | February 09, 2012 | 14:20

A  A

The front of Thursday’s New York Times National section featured Jennifer Steinhauer’s “Birth Control is Covered, And G.O.P. Vows a Fight.” Steinhauer portrayed the fight in cynical political terms, showcasing Republicans as being opportunistic rather than motivated by principled opposition to Obama’s requirement that Catholic universities and charities violate their religious beliefs by offering free birth control via their health insurance plans.

Congressional Republicans, seizing on the type of social issue that motivates and unifies their base, stepped forcefully Wednesday into the battle over an Obama administration rule requiring health insurance plans provided by Catholic universities and charities to offer free birth control to women, vowing to fight back with legislation to unravel the new policy.

“This is not a women’s rights issue,” said Senator Kelly Ayotte, Republican of New Hampshire. “This is a religious liberty issue.”

Racing to defend the administration, five Democratic senators returned from their party’s retreat south of the Capitol to hold a news conference to push back on that notion. “We stand here ready to oppose any attack that is being launched against women’s rights and women’s health,” said Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand of New York.

For House Republicans, who have been hammered in the last few months in the battle over a payroll tax holiday, and whose signature bill for the second session, a transportation measure, is already under fire from the left and the right, the fight over the contraception rule offered a possible way to regain their political footing, particularly with signs that the economy might be improving.

It is potentially a powerful wedge issue that could unite what has been a fractured conference. Further, similar to their efforts in support of the Keystone XL pipeline, the party can attract just enough Democrats to their side to complicate things for the administration.

“Wedge issue” is a loaded term. Times Watch counted up nine instances in the past 12 months of Times reporters or sources either stating or implying that a specific political party or political faction was using a topic as a “wedge issue.” Of those  nine, eight singled out Republicans as the culprit, while another story said sex education was a wedge issue for both right and left.

To her credit, Steinhauer also captured (deeper into the story) the awkwardness and “downright distaste” some Democrats feel for the Obama rule.

The Republican effort to challenge the new rule could present a difficult choice for Democrats who are uneasy about it, which is exactly what Republicans hope. As the controversy spread across Washington, several Democrats from both chambers expressed feelings from skepticism to downright distaste for the Obama rule.

Representative John B. Larson of Connecticut, a member of the House Democratic leadership, sent a letter to Ms. Sebelius that read: “Having worked to pass the Affordable Care Act and being firmly supportive of its implementation, I believe that further flexibility needs to be granted to religiously affiliated organizations in this instance.”

Senator Bob Casey, Democrat of Pennsylvania, put out a statement in opposition to the new rule: “I have strongly supported efforts to provide greater access to contraception,” he said. “I believe, just as strongly, that religiously affiliated organizations like hospitals and universities should not be compelled by our federal government to purchase insurance policies that violate their religious and moral convictions.”

And telling women that Republicans don't want them to have birth control, and that pregnancies will skyrocket , is not making this a wedge issue. of course.

Read the Constitution, Senator

“We stand here ready to oppose any attack that is being launched against women’s rights and women’s health,” said Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand of New York.

There is no constitutional right to health care, let alone contraceptives.

One of the tenets of a society founded on laws is that politicians can't govern by whim. Rights do not exist because someone like Gillibrand says so.

But she's not the first Democrat to find the Constitution too incovenient.

Nothing new for the NYT's, only progressives and liberals have principles,... everyone else, is cynically exploiting those hicks and rubes in,... shudder..... flyover country.

It must be nice to be the only pure human beings, never exploiting or using divison as a tactic like those pure hearted angels in the democrat party/s..........gag....

The same Times which happily reports that liberals are protecting you from republicans who..

want to kill your grandma
poisin your water
start wars absolutely everywhere
steal your money
and force you to go to church........

That those are blatent lies used to scare the public?......

well, the Times never gets around to pointing that out, since it'd make the democrats look like the sewer rats they are.

Mr writer, cynical or not the Catholics and now the Baptists have joined in..

soon you will need a shotgun of words to hit any of the targets.

I would never assume it stays contained like a good Democrat would like it to.

Republicans were silent on

Submitted by Liberallies on Thu, 02/09/2012 - 2:48pm.

Republicans were silent on this issue. The Roman Catholic Church, Bishop Dolan and were on top of it from day one!

I hate to say this, or not so much since it is the way of politicians, sadly, Republicans jumped on this issue once they saw it was safe to do so.

And let us not forget. Obama is using this contraceptive mandate to get his base lined up behind him. His anti-Catholic base, NOW, Planned Parenthood, crazy feminazis are all very happy with what he did.

But as always, it is ok for Democrats to use whatever they must to get their based lined up behind them, but how dare Republicans do the same.

Only Liberals are oblivious to their deep and disgusting hypocrisy.

Obama's holding the hammer which is driving in that wedge

Submitted by CobraMan on Thu, 02/09/2012 - 3:04pm.

This IS a wedge issue, one that was driven into politics by the President himself. Do you think that the timing of this mandate is just a coincidence, just a few months before the general election? No, it's obviously a political ploy on his part. Obama had over two YEARS in which to declare this "mandate," for he could have done so as soon as the ink of his signature on the Heath Care Bill was dry.

This is an attempt of obfuscation by Obama, for the longer we argue about this "mandate," the more press the media devotes to it, the less coverage we see of things like how Obama reneged on his promises to close GITMO, to stop Predator drone attacks, to avoid PAC funding of his campaign, and the like, and the less we, as a nation, debate things like just how "successful" his economic polices are, especially when discussing things like the rapidly expanding Nation Debt and yearly trillion dollar deficits, shortly before the general election. As I said, the timing is NOT coincidental!

This is a "wedge issue," all right, one that was driven in by Obama himself in order to "split" the country's attention away from Obama's other policies, policies which he knows are very unpopular with the general population. Obama knows this "mandate" can never be enforced, for despite the rhetoric, he has no legal means in which to enforce it, as the Catholic Church understands (and that's why they're confident enough to state publicly that they will NOT abide by this "mandate." It's unenforceable). It's all a smoke and mirror show on Obama's part, one that the liberal media is more than willing to be a part of.

The Citizens of each State shall be entitled to all Privileges and Immunities of Citizens in the several States. The US Constitution

Cobra,

Sure, Obama may not have lived up to all his campaign promises but according to NASA - he lowered the level of the oceans so you have to respect that kind of governmental regulation.

"Birth control is covered" is a smokescreen.

Submitted by SickofLibs on Thu, 02/09/2012 - 3:09pm.

Mandating FREE birth control is the real rubbing-it-your-face issue.

This especially disgusting b/c birth control is already dirt cheap. How about subsidizing some $5,000/month cancer medications?

NYT Propaganda

Submitted by John21 on Thu, 02/09/2012 - 3:57pm.

More New York Time propaganda, nothing new.

This has nothing to do with with womens rights and they know it, but they must provide cover and support for the "Incompetent One". They throw all thier standard disinformation against the wall and see if they can get something to stick. The Obama must be protected is one of their battle cries
Without double standards, Liberals would have no standards at all.

Stonehead lies again--is anybody surprised.

Submitted by drsamherman on Fri, 02/10/2012 - 1:09am.

Birth control is available openly at any corner store. No one is taking contraception off the market. Of course, Stonehead being the witless Obamabot hag, no reality will ever make it through the granite lump some would call her head.
