'Romney Riches Are Being Seen as New Hurdle,' at the NYTimes, Anyway
The New York Times has been going to town on controversies over Mitt Romney’s money, from his personal tax rate to the work of Bain Capital, the private equity firm he co-founded. Thursday’s front page story goes into excruciating detail on what is known about Romney's wealth, under the self-fulfilling headline “Romney Riches Are Being Seen as New Hurdle,” by Nicholas Confessore, David Kocieniewski, and Michael Luo. The story was touted by Charlie Rose on CBS Thursday morning and captured by the MRC's Matthew Balan. But riches were not nearly such a "hurdle" when liberal John Edwards ran for president in 2008.
With a fortune estimated to be as large as a quarter of a billion dollars, Mitt Romney is among the wealthiest men ever to run for president.
But attacks from Democrats and Republicans over his career in the leveraged buyout business and his reluctance to release his tax returns have underscored another central fact about Mr. Romney: The wealth that has helped underwrite his career in politics remains shrouded in considerable secrecy, which now poses a major political risk on the campaign trail.
Mr. Romney’s finances are complex and far-flung. He and his wife, Ann, have reported holdings in dozens of publicly traded companies, mutual funds and high-end investment partnerships, with much of their family wealth held in blind trusts that conceal their full size from public view. And Mr. Romney’s disclosure on Tuesday that he pays an effective tax rate of about 15 percent on his income focused new attention on some aspects of his finances, including his millions of dollars in donations to the Mormon Church and his continuing compensation from Bain Capital, the private equity firm he left more than a decade ago.
If Romney is "among the wealthiest men ever to run for president," who is with him? Democrats John Kerry and John Edwards, to name just a couple. Times reporter Robert Worth’s writeup on Kerry’s wealth in October 2004 puts Romney’s wealth in context: “If Mr. Kerry is elected, he and his wife will be the richest couple ever to live in the White House, said Kevin Phillips, a political commentator and the author of ‘Wealth and Democracy.'...But Mr. Kerry's elitist reputation goes deeper than his wife's fortune, now estimated at $1 billion.”
The Times focused on Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards’s wealth only after his sudden withdrawal from the 2008 presidential race, when it was safe to bring up the supposed liberal populist’s previous employment in Fortress Investment Group, the hedge fund where he worked after his failed 2004 campaign as John Kerry’s running mate.
A Nexis search uncovered a mere eight Times stories mentioning Edwards’s consultant work with Fortress Investment Group, a Manhattan hedge fund for institutions and wealthy individuals that invested in subprime mortgage companies that foreclosed on victims of Hurricane Katrina. Those eight stories included one reporting Edwards would divest his $16 million portfolio of those controversial investments, after the Wall Street Journal brought them to public attention.
In contrast, there have been almost 150 mentions of Romney’s private equity firm Bain Capital in the last three months alone.

Ineptocracy (in-ep-toc’-ra-cy) - a system of government where the least capable to lead are elected by the least capable of producing, and where the members of society least likely to sustain themselves or succeed, are rewarded with goods and services paid for by the confiscated wealth of a diminishing number of producers.
This is what producers face, help those who cannot help themselves, help no one who will not help themselves.

Wealth is only a factor for
Submitted by Smartypants on Fri, 01/20/2012 - 12:46pm.
Wealth is only a factor for Republican candidates for office, period. This just flows with the logic that says Democrats can be racists, liars, convicted felons, former KKK members, etc., while Republicans would be drummed out of office for any one of these things. Republican candidates have to have their ducks in a row if they have any chance to win elections. The media will not allow the slightest transgression (if one believes having wealth is a transgression that is) from someone with an "R" after his/her name.
Our president can engage in shady property deals with felons, refer to his grandmother as a "typical white person," run the country's finances down the drain, divide the nation's people along racial and socioeconomic lines, insult long time U.S. allies repeatedly, bow to foreign dictators and take credit for anything that goes well while blaming any and all problems on someone else. The media sees no problem with any of this.
Hmmm . . .

Mega-wealth never seemed to be an obstacle for John & Theresa Kerry, and they married into it rather than earn it. When they stopped in a Wendy's on the campaign trail, and Mrs. Kerry asked "What is chili?," the media never painted her as out of touch with America.

lead them to water, as no matter which direction you go, at some point you will reach water.
Then, as Dave says, you can push 'em in.
The hard part, though, is keeping their little heads underwater for any length of time. :o)

I've got some water over here that I can lead'em to, AND push'em in..........without having to keep their empty heads under water.
And they'll be cryin' and beggin' (Obamaspeak) to be rescued...........and I know how to do it, but................maybe I'll just have to think about it,huh?? People often have life-changing revelatons when they are in serious trouble, so we might be able to salvage a few of these delusional dopes. I've been on the bottom of the reef before, getting the holy hell beat out of me, and wondering if I was ever going to see daylight again - so I know what I'm talking about...............and it might do some of these people some good, and take them out of their constipated and self-stuck mindsets.
