NY Times: Romney Wrong to Expand House After Criticizing Obama Vacation

By Clay Waters | August 23, 2011 | 15:09

A  A

What's "awkward" about employing construction workers in a recession? New York Times reporter Ashley Parker found hypocrisy where none exists in a brief item in Tuesday’s paper on Mitt Romney adding on to one of his properties, “Room for All 16 Grandchildren.”

Mitt Romney has never claimed to be a middle-class man of the people.

But the news that he is planning to quadruple the size of his $12 million oceanfront property in the La Jolla section of San Diego, first reported by The San Diego Union-Tribune on Saturday evening, came at a particularly awkward time. Mr. Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, had spent much of the previous week on the campaign trail criticizing President Obama for vacationing in Martha’s Vineyard when many Americans are still out of work.

The Union-Tribune’s Christopher Cadelago reported that Mr. Romney, who was expected to attend several fund-raisers in San Diego this weekend, recently filed an application to bulldoze his 3,009-square-foot, three-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bathroom home and replace it with an 11,062-square-foot, two-story residence. The current single-story house sits at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac and overlooks a white sand beach. A date to consider the project has not yet been set.

What’s the conflict between criticizing a vacation and building on to a luxury house? Perhaps Romney should just call the project his own economic stimulus plan -- after all, expanding his house by 8,000-square feet will require hiring construction workers.

Mitt Romney has no political power to affect the government crisis, but Obama does. Therefore, it doesn't matter if Mitt is fixing his house, because he is not the President who it letting the nation's house go to rot while he vacations with his jet set friends.

It's just class warfare...

Submitted by Rover on Tue, 08/23/2011 - 5:30pm.

You're right, there's no comparison. This is only a "class warfare" attack to paint Romney as one of the rich. The author of the article probably wanted to find any excuse to publicize that Romney owned a large beachfront property in a wealthy community, and this was the best that the NYT could come up with.

Submitted by virginia republican on Tue, 08/23/2011 - 3:57pm.

President Downgrade paid for his luxury vacation mainly with our money, i.e. 747, Secret Service overtime, etc. Big difference.

Plus, I don't recall the NYT mentioning what a hypocrite Gore was expecting us to cut back on energy use while his homes have huge electric bills and he's jetting around in a Gulfstream. Or Horseface Kerry wanting higher taxes while he buys his yacht overseas and berths it in RI to escape MA taxes. Somehow the NYT is very selective in their outrage.

The media are total BS on that Rezko thing. Beyond ANY reasonable doubt, a criminal transaction took place there. Obama off with NO second or first look. Barry's drug use & getting through college as a foreign student, nothing to see here. Unbelievable. It will be funny when the truth comes out & people will be shocked. Hope it is in a movie soon because there is PLENTY of material!

Why San Diego County needs

Submitted by buddyc on Tue, 08/23/2011 - 5:05pm.

Why
San Diego County needs construction. His work on his house will create jobs, equipment & material purchases, building permit and inspection fees and help local businesses with construction workers with cash in hand.

How can there ever be wrong time to create jobs????

Buddy. Everyone from the Architect's firm (engineers, drafters & secretaries) to the foundation (equipment operators, framers, concrete workers) to the chimney cap (laborers & masons). He's creating more jobs just thinking about expansion than Maobama has created in 2 years & 7 months.

Heaven forbid he should spend his OWN money.

Submitted by drsamherman on Tue, 08/23/2011 - 5:43pm.

Oh the feigned outrage over Romney spending his own money on his own house. How dare he hire workers in the overemployed California labor market. How dare he face higher property taxes in cash-rich California? How dare he invest in his own residence?!

What's next? Why he might even go from insult to injury and buy a new car or more furniture to put in the expanded space of his house? What is the world coming to?

No I don't think he was talking about AIDS, if he was he would have said AIDS/HIV.

I just thought it was really strange to put that in the middle of that sentence, as if being gay was some huge disease that was threatening life on planet earth.

Read about this the other day

Submitted by Blonde on Tue, 08/23/2011 - 7:43pm.

IIRC, Romney bought the house because of its location right on the beach. It has 3,000 square feet and 2 bedrooms.

So granted, the house is way too small for a vacation house for his family. He has 5 married children and sixteen grandchildren.

It's his money, his family, his house, but it's just typical of the media. Didn't they get their knicks in a twist over Cindy McCain's multiple houses last time around?

Of course the left will complain, especially when you hear them call for union wage scale.

But speaking of the number of BO's vacation days. He's a busy guy. Sure George Bush only had to deal with 9/11, two wars, and a democratically contolled congress after 2007. He did take alot of vacations.
As for Obama, it's alot of work to destroy a country from within so give him a break. Also, he may not have been on vacation, but he's been out of Washington more than ANY president, looking at his adoring audiences through his nostrils, and spewing lies about the Right, and how bad luck has caused his economic recovery scheme to fail. And now he's pumping out the same plan. What's the definition of insanity? Doing the same thing and expecting a different result (Freud).

By the way, all of us who post on these sites and express our disdain for Obama and his policies? those guys walking up to your front door? they're probaby from the IRS.

Romney is just a citizen

Submitted by deerjerkydave on Wed, 08/24/2011 - 2:54pm.

Romney is just a citizen candidate who can fully take care of business AND fix his house at the same time. Obama is the President and can't fully take care of business and be on vacation at the same time.
