NYT Says Don't Worry, Dems -- Pelosi Under No 'Serious Threat' on Waterboarding

After burying the story on page A18 Friday, the New York Times finally put the Nancy Pelosi-C.I.A. controversy on the front page Saturday. Yet congressional reporter Carl Hulse made excuses for House Speaker Pelosi, who accused the CIA of deliberately misleading her in 2002 about waterboarding.

Hulse glossed over the multiple contradictory accounts Pelosi has delivered of what she knew about waterboarding and when she knew it. He also insisted Pelosi was in no political danger and focused solely on the politics of the battle and the effectiveness of Republican attacks, not on the veracity of Pelosi's accounts of what the C.I.A. told her about waterboarding.

After many failed efforts, Republicans have finally found a weak spot in Nancy Pelosi's political armor as a fight over detainee interrogations engulfs Ms. Pelosi, Republicans and intelligence officials.

The furor was heightened on Friday when the director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Leon E. Panetta, pushed back against an assertion by Ms. Pelosi, a Democrat who is the House speaker, that she had been misled by agency representatives seven years ago about harsh treatment of terrorism suspects, a claim that struck a raw nerve at the spy headquarters.

Mr. Panetta, a former Democratic congressman from California and a longtime associate of Ms. Pelosi, issued a statement that said the agency's "contemporaneous records from September 2002 indicate that C.I.A. officers briefed truthfully," a rebuttal of Ms. Pelosi's claim on Thursday that intelligence officials had lied to her.

The deepening dispute over what Ms. Pelosi was told in September 2002 has challenged her credibility and raised new questions about whether she passed up an early opportunity to expose the Bush administration's harsh treatment of detainees.

....

As for the speaker, she no doubt faces a difficult period. But few think the sharp focus on the interrogation matter is a serious threat to the authority of Ms. Pelosi, a powerful figure who weathered previous Republican assaults with hardly a scratch.

"It is an embarrassment," said Ross K. Baker, an expert on Congress at Rutgers University, "and clearly nobody wants to be embarrassed, particularly a speaker of the House. But other than that, there is nothing here that threatens her job."

Ms. Pelosi is not the only one with political exposure. Should any investigation determine that the C.I.A. misled members of Congress, the result could be severely damaging to the agency and to the Republican leaders who have relentlessly pressed the issue against Ms. Pelosi.

That's rich. For years, the Times swallowed without question damaging anti-Bush leaks about Valerie Plame and flawed intelligence on weapons of mass destruction. Yet when the agency might hurt the credibility of a prominent liberal Democrat, the C.I.A.'s veracity is suddenly up for debate.

Hulse hinted the whole controversy was no big deal because Pelosi couldn't have done anything about the interrogation anyway:

The furor surrounding Ms. Pelosi's claim that she was misled has obscured one undisputed fact about the briefings. The Sept. 4, 2002, session, the first given to anyone in Congress on the so-called enhanced interrogation methods, came weeks after the C.I.A. had started to use the methods. Even if Ms. Pelosi had taken action, it is doubtful it would have averted the firestorm about torture that was to come.

Fellow Democrats say they support the speaker, and they will probably become more united as she faces attacks from polarizing opponents like Newt Gingrich, who lashed out at the speaker on Friday, or faces calls from the right to step down. The Democrats say her predicament shows the perils of classified briefings, which can handcuff those who attend if they hear something objectionable.

In his Monday "Caucus" political round-up, "A Leadership Test For an Unbowed Pelosi," John Harwood interviewed Pelosi and also insisted the speaker was on solid footing with her caucus:

Ms. Pelosi has come under fire for her accounts of when she learned that the Bush administration had used "enhanced interrogation techniques" like waterboarding of terrorism suspects, and what she did about it. Last week, she picked a high-profile fight with the Central Intelligence Agency, accusing officials of misleading her during a 2002 briefing.

Mr. Gingrich himself assailed Ms. Pelosi over that charge, calling it "despicable" and "dishonest." But Republican rhetorical fire shows no sign of threatening her tenure after two House election successes and a solid legislative opening to Mr. Obama's tenure.

THE CIA DOES THE PRE-VISIT SECURITY-DO YOU THINK THEY CARE ABOUT HER SECURITY. SHE NEEDS TO STAND DOWN. SOMEONE COULD GET HURT.

BHO- the one term DIMOCRAT

Huh?

You my not realize this, but the Secret Service handles security for Nancy, including "pre-visit" security, and not the CIA.

Well of course the good Old

Well of course the good Old Grey Lady has this on the front pages now, they all have their talking points put together now for Pop-Up-Pelosi...circle the wagons they must...and like I've said before, it will most likely be better to leave her where she is, let her stew in her own juices, it will be great using all of this turmoil, along with the priceless ads for the GOP in the up-coming elections with her precious lies she stutters out little by little.

Don't get me wrong, she is lying through their teeth, we all know it, she should be made to step down and have hearings on her lying accusations...blah blah blah...but heck, she is a democrat, they never step-down, or leave.

Let her twist in the wind, it will hurt her own party, we couldn't have a better friend at the moment.

Exactly!

With the Speakership locked in the hands of integrity-challenged Nancy we could be watching the credibility, such as it is, of the Democrats and their claques ebb away and away and away.

Drip, drip, drip…sort of like the old Chinese water torture.

With Degenerate Media always propping up the Democrats, the net effect is ever greater corruption within the Democratic Party and the Degenerate Media.  Or, as I always say in my closing line…

CRex: Pelosi may eventually

CRex: Pelosi may eventually lose her speakership. But I seriously doubt that the electorate in the Land O'Fruits & Nuts is going to boot Fancy Nancy.

Oh, gee, thankfully, it's only Pelosi and the Republicans getting engulfed. I thought for a second there were some other dems involved, but I guess not.

Carry on.

Didn't you know?

Didn't you know? The Obama administration, you know, the one who's CIA director issued a statement showing Nancy as both a fool and a liar, is Republican? At least the NYT's seems to think so.

Notice how they call Newt a polarizing opponent, not partisan but POLARIZING.  Now Pelosi, she's a powerful figure. Not partisan, not polarizing, just powerful.  Good Lord, not even a semblance of balance.  This site and Drudge are the only places I will read anything from the New York Times.  What a rag!

Comparing the game: Trent Lott vs Pelosi resignation

Comparing the game: Trent Lott (Livingston, Gingrich, etc.) vs Nancy Pelosi resignation.

For the most part, with a few notable exceptions, the news of Speaker Pelosi's situation is presented by the national media as it's the Republicans who are making the fuss here; Republicans are saying this, they are demanding that, etc., etc.

What we don't see is an independently minded national media with an investigative mind set, nor one with a voice which itself is calling for the Speaker to be investigated for all of the partisan divide she has created - not to mention the specific charge on the table in this instant in time.

Remembering back to the days of Trent Lott's situation (his comments at Thrumond's 100th B-day) or Rep. Livingston's departure from the House, it seems to me that a full search of the news would show that in addition to the Democrats raising their partisan sword, that the national MSM was out in force digging deep to put their stamp on their reasons they would present the audience on why they were in trouble and should resign their respective positions.

Here, by and by the Democrats who might want to speak out on Pelosi and clean house a bit, will not be sought out by the MSM.  The game is to demonstrate any displeasure with Speaker Pelosi, almost entirely only thru the lens of hard nose Republicans going after her to either defend Bush/Cheney, or simply for the purpose of playing politics.

Actually, bt

.. I went back and looked thru a few dozen stories then, and it seems that the media was (other than pushing their own interests) pretty much using Republican voices to trash Lott, and call for him to step down. That's a very typical M.O. for the press. They love to put on a big name Republican as their witness - in pushing the media's view, but they will seldom have any interest in putting a big name Democrat in the spotlight to beat up on one of their own Democrats - or the Democratic party.

For instance, when Jimmy Carter and Nelson Mandela, and certain Hollywood activists were out condemning Clinton for his actions in Kosovo - the media had no interest in showcasing the view. It's protect Clinton mode only. With the shoe on the other foot, when Bill Clinton (and former cabinet members) were out defending Bush - they believed Saddam had WMD's as well -  in the summer of 2003, the MSM had no interest in putting that out in the public discussion. They were in damage Bush mode only.

(;~/ gary

MSM's: Protect those Democrats!

It didn't take very long for the MSM to enter "protect a Democrat" mode again.  Name that Democrat - John Murtha, Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid. Chris Dodd and "Ears" himself - and the MSM will do anything to keep him or her in office, no matter what the allegation!  Worst of all, millions of pea-brained voters swallow the media's garbage whole!  *Sigh*

It is appalling how the media regards rumors and gossip about Republicans as gospel, while Democrats can get away with murder.  Heaven help us all.

who woulda thought that Panetta was good for something...

...other than covering up for Clinton's indiscretions?

If anyone remembers, when Mrs Clinton wanted a political career, she had two choices of far left states, New York and California. Unfortunately, Pelosi would never stand down and let Hillary take her House position nor share the spotlight with her in Boxer's Senate seat (so what's Babs Boxer been up to these days, other than some shady Defense contract deals and some connection to banking issues?)

And now, without Panetta (Democrat, and "former" Clintonista) declaring Pelosi knew about interrogation techniques, there would not even be a hint of scandal-because if the accusation she "knew" came from a Republican it would be dismissed out of hand. Panetta being of course, the guy who "handled" the White House interns and was well acquainted with Monica's father. Panetta ran media interference for as long as was possible.

The only reason we here *anything* on the MSM  that's critical of The One is because Hillary has supporters in the Media. The "enemy of our enemy", even during the early campaign, the Clinton camp exposed whatever they could to damage O and his supporters. It was most effective because it was the truth-merely allowing the truth to get out instead of suppressing it.

Pelosi is being reminded of the cost of failed loyalty. Once she "kisses the ring" she will be forgiven by the Family, or at least allowed to "disappear" with dignity out of respect for her services rendered in the past.

This is coming down to Panetta v. Pelosi.

I've heard some of the talking heads. According to many, the CIA lies 'all the time'.

This is obviously spin to distract from Pelosi's serial lying.

But Panetta is going to have to stand behind his agency and he's got some serious artillery to bring up.

Pelosi's going to have to put a stop to this 'CIA lied' line or risk being blown out of the water.
