N.Y. Times Urges Springsteen to 'Go Rogue' at Super Bowl and Denounce 'Corporate Fat Cats'

  • Bookmark and Share

A liberal New York Times sports columnist begged Bruce Springsteen on Friday to make a political statement during his halftime Super Bowl concert. Harvey Araton suggested: "maybe we'll get lucky and there will be at least one bold moment Sunday night when Springsteen goes rogue and rails against -- oh, I don't know -- offensive Wall Street bonuses, $18.4 billion worth. Go ahead, Bruce, make those corporate fat cats squirm on their sofas."

Araton chipped in with his own financial expertise (and Bruce Springsteen fandom) in his Super Bowl column from Tampa, "At the Half, It's B-r-u-u-u-u-u-u-u-c-e." Araton, whose liberal huffing backfired in 2006 when he assumed the guilt of the Duke lacrosse players before the case against them collapsed, revealed himself to be a liberal fanboy for Springsteen rivaling leftist media critic Eric Alterman and urged the lefty rocker to make the fat cats squirm. After accusing the Super Bowl event of "crass commercialism occasionally mixed with patriotic pandering," the slobber commenced to run:

During a news conference that was billed as the band’s first since 1987 and was nothing short of hilarious, the Boss reminded the guitarist Nils Lofgren (I can admit to owning one of his distant solo albums, the vinyl kind) that he was not supposed to say that as a resident of Scottsdale, Ariz., he will be rooting for the Cardinals to beat the Steelers.

Not in the contract, Springsteen said with deft comic timing. But who knows, maybe we’ll get lucky and there will be at least one bold moment Sunday night when Springsteen goes rogue and rails against -- oh, I don’t know -- offensive Wall Street bonuses, $18.4 billion worth.

Go ahead, Bruce, make those corporate fat cats squirm on their sofas. It’s a one-time forum -- make a lasting impression....When the Boss got a reluctant Van Zandt to take the microphone, Silvio of "The Sopranos" said, "I think one of the things that we’re kind of proud of is that there’s a certain inspirational quality to what we do, and that’s because of when we grew up, we had the high standards of the ’60s."

Say what you will about the flaws of that decade, at least it generated longstanding ideals more resonant than ever as of two weeks ago. [I presume he's referring to Obama's inauguration.] And after a news conference in which normally skeptical reporters sat at the edge of their seats and took cellphone photos of Springsteen and the other seven members of the band, it occurred to me that this was a pretty good match after all.

Denounce Corporate Fat Cats

Perhaps Springsteen should denounce corporate fat-cat  Pinch Sulzburger who took a fabled and respected institution and financially ruined it.

Pinch's company is also responsible of the destruction of untold numbers of carbon dioxide absorbing trees.  Where are you Trudy and Sting?

Did Bruce get to the

  • Did Bruce get to the super bowl via public transportation?

  • Is he staying at the local Day's Inn?

  • Is he making minimum wage for his appearance?

If the answer to any of these questions is YES, then he can denounce corporate fat cats. Otherwise, he'd just be another hypocrite -- something which the NYT does not yet understand.

Well Said

Well  said This nThat. Years ago the New York Times decided to throw its editorial weight around a campaign to "clean up" Times Square. It was quickly pointed out the Adult Movie theaters in the area all advertised the pictures in display ads in the New York Times.

That was in the days before the ruinous rein of Little Pinch.  The Times was at least forthcoming enough to admit the hypocrisy and forego the advertising revenue from the adult theaters.

Damn, you got that one out

Damn, you got that one out faster than me!

Yeah, Bruce can attack Pinch for taking other peoples investments and turning them into the mud by going partisan and eroding the papers worth in both journalistic terms and financial terms simultaneously.

But I guess these idiots (Both Bruce and the paper staff) cannot see that.

Bruce (Jughead) Springstinks

Full disclosure: I've always detested Bruce Springsteen. I think he's a no talent hack with a terrible voice who "plays" an accustic guitar in a "rock" band. That being said...

Isn't this the same Springsteen that lefties are upset with for coddling up to the most-hated Corporate fat-cat --- Wal-Mart?

And even if this no-talent ass-clown does have something durrogatory to say about corporate execs or contractual bonuses, what do you think they'll do? Squirm on their sofas? I think not. My guess is they'll flip him the bird, say "F-U Buddy!" and plan NOT to by the [sure-to-be-a-hit-with-the-brainless-Obama-types, but] musically-lacking and lyrically-challenged piece of garbage this bonehead is so obviously and shamelessly peddling by making this Super Bowl appearance.

Okay- I'm back now. Phew- glad to get that off my chest. Sorry to those of you who like Springsteen...no offense to you- you're intelligent enough to not be an Obama supporter...

I always said SB halftime performers were sellouts... and this year's illustrates the hypocracy of the left better than one could've imagined.

YEAH!!!

Right on Bruce!  You can rally against the corporate fat cats while you take money from Walmart, take an ass load of money for performing at the Superbowl, and rank in the top 10 for most expensive concert tickets in the industry for your pretentious concerts.  Yeah!  That's how you stand up for the little man.

Well no one's saying Springsteen is actually going to do this....but you'd think Araton would be smart enough to see the hypocrisy...oh wait!  We're talking about the NYT!!

If he even reads the NYT, I wonder if "The Boss" is smart enough to see what a fool he would be making of himself if he did this.

Bruce...yawn

Maybe, if he mouths off politically....he'll get booed like Bill Clinton got booed at the BCS when they showed his picture on the Jumbotron (gotta love my Gators!).   Or maybe the crowd will take up the cheer "shut up and sing".

Who cares what he says...I won't be watching, at halftime I'll be serving chicken enchiladas w/salsa verde, etc.

Okay, low hanging fruit:

A) I wonder if this yutz who wrote the article knows how much Springstain will get (or routinely gets) for thirty minutes worth of caterwauling, and how that stacks up to an annualized salary, and

B) Does he really think that anyone in corporate America, except for maybe Springstain's manager would give a rat's butt what self-indulgent prattle comes out of his mouth, in any forum???  In fact, I'm sure they'd be quite amused at how Springstain thinks he matters at all.

If any writer wanted to do a real comparison, I think he'd have a damn good article to take the left's approach to salaries (the great disparity between the top paid in a company vs.the lowest paid) of those in the entertainment industry.  You know, Brad Pitt getting twenty million dollars for a picture for eight weeks work, and the workers at the food service table getting minimum wage...

Do liberals EVER stop?

They won the election, yet they think every stage is a soapbox from which they can preach their ultra-leftist policies.

The thing that I'd like to ask Springsteen et. al. is - if you denounce the "corporate fat cats" and the "big box stores" that make "obscene" profits, do you realize you're denouncing the people who work for these coporations and companies?  Do you realize that destroying these companies takes away a major source of income (not to mention benefits like insurance) from people who live paycheck to paycheck?

Where would the thousands of people employed by, say, Wal-Mart go for work if that supposedly evil company closed its doors?

Oh, wait...we know the answer to that.  They want the government to care for people, on the taxes of the "rich", who they're out to destroy.

Whoever said liberalism is a mental disorder was 100% correct.  Only people who are certifiable would think government is the solution to everything when logic, and basic math, proves otherwise time and again.

Aut viam inveniam aut faciam

No. Because they want their voices to be the only ones heard.

I have an idea...

For every celebrity or entertainer who has earned their millions and then denounces "obscene" corporate profits or bonuses, here's how we'll handle them:

We'll agree to limit corporate bonuses and profits IF they agree to give back their share of what they earned during their career above what THEY consider "obscene" profits/bonuses taken by corporations or corporate execs/salesman.

See, it's very easy for them to declare an end to these profits that they denounce after they've made their money.  Apply the same rules to them that they want others to live under and their tune changes.

Not Watching SB!

Ah Yes... The Wisdom of Harv & Bruce

Hey Harve ?  Did you ever stop to consider that NBC( a corporation) is broadcasting the Super Bowl and probably paying a percentage of Springstein's fee for the half time show ?  And ah.. Harve lets not forget the NFL (which just happens to be a corporation as well) which is likewise probably paying the Jersey Bum a percentage too. I am sure ol' Brucie ain't workin' for free tonight !  And ah Harve.. what about the lable that Brucie Boy records for, I'll just bet they are incoporated as well ? And ah.. Harve here's two more tibits for you to ponder. 1) You work for a corporation and I'll bet you didn't give up your year end bonus (if you got one) did you ? And before I forget, Harve, about three years ago Brucie boy sold his home in Deal, NJ for a nice little profit of about 3 mil.   Hey Harve, why don't you and the Jersey Bum 'can' the working class hero bull shit ? Put a fork in it Harve , it's done, if ya' know what I mean ?

Springsteen IS a corporate fat cat

Bruce is still recording for one of the major record labels in the world, and I'm sure his contract with Columbia is far more lucrative than the standard beginning artist pact.  His every album is greeted with major hype.  In short, Springsteen IS a corporate fat cat.

But if he insists on making a statement, let him do a duet with Olbermutt.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

You mean, corporate fat cats like the New York Times Co?

I don't much care what Bruce Springsteen says or does during the halftime show, as it will not be aired in my home.

Bruce Springsteen is a no-talent, America-hating hypocrite of the first order.

I do not like him, his music, or his band.

Its interesting seeing the

Its interesting seeing the comments here- to this point, anyway. I commented earlier about Bruce's faux talents and it seems I'm not the only one with that opinion.

But here's food for thought: If you're a "mainstream musical artist", as I would classify Springsteen, why would you want to alienate half of your potential audience? It just doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I understand the ego, narsicism, the me-me-me mentality; and my guess is to be sucessful in the entertainment industry its probably somewhat of a necessity. But wouldn't it logically follow that to be adored by the masses would be the goal? Not just half of the masses, but everyone? Especially for a mainstream type of musician who's music itself could be heard in multiple venues, varying platforms, and is generally not offensive to anyone (I haven't heard anything newer than, say, 1986 from him, so if his lyrics have politicised over the years, I'm unaware.) Even if it's not about the revenue, (i.e. album sales, concert tickets) wouldn't you be able to further your causes with more revenue? Make greater charitable contributions and such? Like Bono, another leftist that alienates a large portion of his potential audience by using the bully pulpit to limit his followers. Just bad business in my view...

Born To Run his mouth

Born To Run his mouth

You just have to wonder who

You just have to wonder who these idiots think their audience is. Today's young people don't give a rat's patootie about Bruthe and his schtick. That leaves his original fanbase, most of which has grown up and left him in the decades following his success. Do they really think a bunch of 40-somethings are going to jump up on their sofas, punch the air with their fists, and go, "Bruthe! Bruthe!" while he delivers the same old, same old, tired leftist slogans?

"Workers of the world, unite!"

"How about you shut up and sit down, a**hole? We can't see the game."

Hypocrisy in the USA

This is hilarious: "NEW YORK – The Boss is owning up to a mistake. In
an interview with Sunday's New York Times, Bruce Springsteen says he
shouldn't have made a deal with Wal-Mart. This month, the store started
exclusively selling a Springsteen greatest hits CD."

Even though it makes ya mad , there is an upside

Even though it makes ya  mad , there is an upside

Left wing celeb's trying to educate the masses, p-me off also, but upon reflection I think it is pretty clear that the net effect is to alienate more people than influence them.

Assume Springstein's ego forces him to preach to thr ignorant at the Super Bowl; If you could do accurate polling, you would find virtually every person who liked what Sprienstein did already shared his liberal views, while a fair share of those who didn't like it, thought it was inappropriate or exploiting those who invited him, a significant percentage of those people were independent, non-conservatives.   I think any Springstein preeching will evoke a lot more groaning in America's living rooms than cheers.

It is difficult for conservatives to not react to the excesses of the left but in the bigger picture  Olberman's rantings are a net positive for our side, Michael Moore has pushed more people from the center in a rightward direction.

The only "squirming on the

The only "squirming on the couch" the corporate "fat cats" will be doing during this no-talent has-been's halftime show, will involve all the squirming it takes to get off the couch to urinate, grab another beer and mingle with other guests.  That's what I plan on doing.  By the way, wouldn't it be a little hypocritical of Springsteen to start into one of his tiresome, phony blue collar, "anti-corporate" rants when he's already accepted a big, fat corporate check to perform his trite musical "poetry"?

"Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." -Winston Churchill

Great advice!!!!!

Now the NYT is advising an entertainer, who I would assume wants as large an audience as possible, to alienate a portion of his potential revenue. Now that's really cutting edge thought, and will really make things right and proper.  My advise would be to not listen to the NYT.

Oh by-the-way, Springsteen can't sing, he's terrible. I for one don't have any interest in listening to a bad imitation of a ruptured, cloven hoofed farm animal, the man can't sing!!!!

And if you disagree with me, then you sir, are worse than Springsteen.
