Oil Reserves

Charlie Daniels's picture

Speaking just for myself, I think that President Obama tapping into America's strategic oil reserve was an extremely unwise and dangerous move.

They can say that he didn't do it for political purposes, but until the cows come home and set up housekeeping, I still won't believe it.

The reason being that, at best, it is a temporary measure which will be nothing more than a blip on the radar screen of the world's crude oil prices. Whatever fleeting effect it causes will do absolutely nothing to ease our real problem of depending on people who hate our guts to keep our cars and industries running.

Why has it been impossible for all our presidents and both political parties to face the fact that the only energy supplies we can really rely on are the ones that exist below the lands and the waters of The United States of America?

I have come to believe that there is something much more sinister than the Sierra Club and Greenpeace that prevents us from exploiting our plentiful energy resources, something organized and dirty with the strings being pulled in the highest political offices and the most prestigious corporate boardrooms in the world.

But that's another subject for another time. Let's get back to the one at hand.

The oil we take out of our reserves will have to be replaced at whatever the price happens to be at the time we replace it, which could very well be higher than it is now.

And even worse than that, was this truly a strategic need or a political need?

I personally opt for the latter. I think it was political and foolish.

Our strategic oil reserves are supposed to guard against a time when something happens that critically disrupts our flow of oil and threatens to shut the country down. To provide fuel so our planes can fly and our defenses can be maintained.

Fuel to be used to harvest and move food around the nation in case of a worldwide breakdown, which looks entirely possible in the next few years.

What do we do when the fanatics close down the Persian Gulf or blow up the pipelines in Saudi Arabia? What if we sustain a major domestic attack?

Our strategic oil reserves should be for the defense of this country, not to bolster the sagging poll numbers of a reckless president.

What do you think?

I think the same.

As much as it hurts me and my family, I hope the price of oil "necessarily skyrockets" again. I want it to go so high that not even the hardest core environmentalist will show their face because they fear being held to account for their own responsibility in that. I want everyone to experience the idiocy of legislatively and executively banning access to our own supplies and thus beholding our entire nation, our every liberty, to the whims of Islamic and socialist zealots.

I have come to the conclusion that Americans must feel pain in order to wake the heck up. This madness has got to stop. We must stand up for ourselves and make our own way instead of holding ourselves back to prop up the rest of the world with redistribution policies.

We must end this Jizyah payment called the purchase of foreign oil at prices controlled from behind closed cartel doors and mandated by self deprecating government imposed foolishness.

Sarah was right. Drill baby, drill.

That an individual right exists requires that some policy positions be removed from the table of debate.

Some cold water

What has to stop is all the mythology that surrounds oil and oil prices.

I like drilling here in the United States as much as anybody, but the ONLY problem I have with EVIL foreign (for too many "conservatives", "EVIL" and "foreign" are interchangeable terms) oil is that the reason we are importing is because we aren't bothering to drill here.  We can, and should, and if we still need to import oil, great.  If we don't have to, why should we?

How many people know that we get most of our EVIL foreign oil from Canada?  And from there, the EVIL foreign oil we import is from this hemisphere?

Only about 15% of the oil we import comes from the "Islamic zealots".  The Socialist zealot that is Hugo Chavez knows as well as we do that the ONLY places in the world that can refine the heavy sour Venezuelan crude is the Caribbean and the southern United States.  So, who has got who by the throat, exactly?

And OPEC is one step away from being worthless.  Sure, they set production "quotas".  But then all the member countries push to violate them and cheat as much as possible because everyone wants to sell a teensy bit more.

ONLY 15%? Maybe if you

ONLY 15%? Maybe if you visualize that approximately one in every six oil dollars from the US goes to Islamic Zealots then "ONLY 15%" would not be so small. 15% of an incredible amount of money is still an incredible amount of money. This is just another example of liberals showing us that their ideology for it's own sake is more important than knowingly hurting our country.

Show me a young Conservative and I'll show you someone with no heart. Show me an old Liberal and I'll show you someone with no brains. - Winston Churchill

Yep. Only 15%.

One, I am not a liberal.  I have five years worth of NB posts that give the lie to that.

Two, yes, ONLY 15%.  I say "only 15%" because the way some posters (and Americans in general, for that matter) around here talk, it's more like 99%.

Three, try to read my entire post.  I'm all about drilling and extracting oil in this country and importing only because we have to.  I would wager that if we, for instance, went after CO oil shale in huge numbers, we wouldn't NEED the 15% of oil we get from the Middle East.

I for one am geeked that there is something of a "black gold" rush on in south TX, which is a part of the state not know for its oil reserves.  The same fracking that has made for an oil boom in ND is making for some serious oil exploration in south TX.

Four, I simply don't intensively fear EVIL foreigners the way some "conservatives" do.

Obama takes credit for OPEC production increase.

According to a story I read recently, the Obama Administration asked OPEC to increase oil production to compensate for the loss of supplies from Libya.

OPEC agreed and did in fact increase supplies which first stabilized, then decreased prices.

Obama then released supplies from the Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPR), an act that economists say would only affect oil prices by pennies.

Obama then takes credit for stabilizing the entire oil market merely by tapping the SPR.

There is no limit to the lies, deceit, double-dealing and backstabbing of Obama and Democrats.

NONE.

CANDIDATE Obama: 'Yes, we CAN'.

PRESIDENT Obama: 'BECAUSE we CAN'.

Just another liberal who has

Just another liberal who has no reverence for life and loves themself so much that it's to "hell" with everyone who doesn't meet my needs or gets in the way.

Right is never wrong, Left is never right.

Sinister is the right word

Sinister is the right word for it. I wonder if George Soros might have a hand in the EPA. We know he pulls Obama's strings. He controls most of our media. Our troops are scattered around the globe, in harms way. I say it's time to tell Congress, the EPA and Obama that we WILL drill, here, we WILL drill, now. It's time to find out exactly who is in charge, the government or the People. I will not be led to slaughter without a fight!

SPR

This is just yet more evidence of the fact that His Majesty The Shahinshah hates the military and will be more than happy to see the United States reduced to a whiny Socialist babying Nanny State which is unable to defend itself.

Wow!

30 million barrels of oil--that will keep the country running for 36 Hours! We're saved!

Obama is a disaster
