Washington Post and Environmentalism: Yesterday's Fix is Today's Crisis

The Washington Post reported July 20 that, “Scientists say the chemicals that helped solve the last global environmental crisis – the hole in the ozone layer – are making the current one worse.”

David A. Fahrenthold wrote, “This is not the funny kind of irony.” Except it really is. Even funnier is the Post’s dedication to the environmental cause, a cause that does not have as much support as the media makes it out, and a cause that keeps shooting itself in the foot.

The chemicals used to replace chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) have now been found to “act as heat sponges in Earth's atmosphere, absorbing energy from the sun and keeping it from being reflected out into space,” and therefore contribute to the global warming “crisis.”

“Now, scientists say, the world must find replacements for the replacements – or these super-emissions could cancel out other efforts to stop global warming,” Fahrenthold wrote. Such are the problems when you view everything as a series of crises. Fahrenthold accepts the current climate situation as a “crisis” and joins with the sources he cites to bemoan their betrayal by those replacement chemicals once believed brought salvation.

The chemicals that replaced CFCs are apparently now too voluminous, and “there will soon be many more of them, as developing countries become more prosperous and their people buy vehicles and air conditioners.”

But would Fahrenthold and global warming activists propose keeping poor countries from developing, in the name of saving the planet? Maybe not (at least not publicly), but they do want to replace the replacement.

“A bigger question: What will replace these chemicals? Experts say that some substitutes, with less global warming impact, can be made with new HFCs or by using ammonia or butane. But others are needed,” Fahrenthold wrote.

No, the bigger question: what environmental catastrophe will the next replacements bring on? Whatever the answer, at least Fahrenthold and co. will have a new crisis to occupy them.

→ That's just stupid

CO2 propellant, and Dry Ice are produced by scrubbing the exhaust of other refinement processes.

What these losers are suggesting is that it's criminal to re-release these gases once they're captured.

Whereas it's possible to demonstrate the breakdown of Ozone via chlorofluorocarbons in the lab, scientists have yet to demonstrate that CO2 traps infrared heat more efficiently than ambient atmosphere.

Oops.

Hmm. Guess I'd better goto Walmart and stock up on R134A while I still can.

I know where this is eventually going though: "Air conditioning and refrigeration are a luxury that the planet cannot afford." Yeah, that'll go down well. Maybe the democrats can make that their battle cry for the 2010 midterm elections.

I never quite believed that

I never quite believed that CFCs caused the ozone hole. How do we know that this isn't naturally occurring, that it has happened since the beginning of time? We've only been able to monitor it for the last couple of decades.

It is a delicious irony that the fix is worse than the original problem.

Definition of FICKLE

First, hate the chemical companies for ruining the environment...

Then, expect and demand that the chemical companies come up with new chemicals... (chemicals that will "save the world" - again)

Well, maybe not fickle. Maybe just out of touch with reality.

The ozone layer panic was a

The ozone layer panic was a scam, too.  Think we would have learned from that.  Of course not.  Let's manufacture another industrial, capitalist, American "disaster" to exploit.

One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 61% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory (yep...approval for Congress now at 39%...do you believe that!?).

Big Surprise!

In the 1970's when my boys were born, the law said all children's sleepwear had to be treated to be flame-retardant.The items couldn't be washed with regular laundry soap or bleach, as that would wash out the retardant.

I just threw them in the regular wash, and ended up glad, because a few years later they found out the chemical they were using was a carcinogenic.

Then we had the government-mandated airbags...and then they discovered that the airbags could kill kids, and small drivers.  So did they stop installing them? No, they said put your kids in the back seat, and push the driver's seat back so you're not so close to the wheel. BTW, isn't a driver dealing with kids in the back seat  a major cause of accidents?  No matter.....

And now they find that their so-called "solution" to CFC's is itself a big problem.

Wow.  Color me shocked.

mb... I did same with our

mb...

I did same with our kids sleepwear...I also remember when they came out with it being cancer causing....(I also recall the smell of those PJ's.) the other examples you give are spot on....and there are so many more.

I've got to get for a bit, just saw your post and wanted to add on that I agree....the govt other than our military are our biggest enemies as far as I am concerned anymore...they screw everything up they get their hands on...most intentionally too as far as I see it.

I'm posting fast, so I may have given a little more time to my final answer here, but it'll do for now.

Remember this?

Now you need to rush down to the doctor and get a cholesterol  check.

Funny how the folks obsess over a small fraction of less than 1% of the atmosphere. Yet can't see the changes in land use, the oceans or that big glowing ball in the sky.

That cartoon may be right!

What's funny is that everything the government has been telling us for decades about eating is now coming under fire.

In the last few years there have been a lot of studies that show that fat and cholesterol are not actually bad for you. It turns that the government was lobbied by certain agricultural groups and the food pyramid that you see today may be the reason for the huge rise in obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

The new research shows that the danger comes from triglycerides, low HDL and and a one form of LDL.  There are actually 7 different types of LDL cholesterol.  Eating highly refined carbohydrates increases insulin which in turns raises triglycerides and LDL cholesterol and lowers HDL.

Since the government started pushing high carb diets, the actually amount of fat consumed by Americans has decreased, but heart disease, diabetes and obesity have continued to rise.  Eating fruits, vegetables, meat, cheese and nuts may actually prevent heart disease.  It is actually the bread, flour, fried foods, vegetable oils, cereals, candy and corn syrups that are actually the problem.

I've studied this thoroughly and the science community treats fat and cholesterol like they do global warming.  All the knowledge that cholesterol is bad comes from one government accepted study from the early 1950s.  This study has been built upon in study after study and to get government funding you essentially had to agree with the accepted hypothesis.  Any dissension and your career and reputation could be in jeopardy.  Does this sound familiar?  After driving home their message for decades, it almost impossible for anyone to think that fat may actually be good for you and not actually make you fat or gum up your arteries.

If anyone is interested in this subject read Good Calories, Bad Calories.  It sounds like a diet book, but it is actually a history of cholesterol that took over 7 years to write.  There is at least 100 pages of references.  It is truly a great book to see how the government can cause more harm than good when they get involved in scientific issues.

AHH, more laws to break..

smugglers

Environmental arbitrageurs can
buy a 12-ounce container of Freon in Mexico for $2 and sell it in the
U.S. for $23. The street price for a 30 pound cylinder is $500. Thomas
A. Watts-Fitzgerald, the U.S. Attorney in charge of "Operation Cool
Breeze" calculates that buying cocaine, converting it to crack, and
selling it brings a 4 - to -1 profit ratio--buying a canister of Freon
in another country for $42 and selling it for $550 produces a 13 to 1
ratio.

Since Operation Cool Breeze began
nearly two years ago Federal prosecutors have won at least 18
convictions of major smugglers, accompanied by millions of dollars in
penalties, and sentences of up to 57 months. A Freon case brought the
first-ever extradition for an environmental crime, and the first U.S.
felony convictions based on violations of the Federal Clean Air Act
amendments on ozone depleting gases. Customs officials confiscate six
or seven illegal loads of Freon canisters a week on the
California-Mexico border. "Rat-packers" (small scale smugglers) were
caught with 5,320 pounds of Freon in the fiscal year ending September
30, 1996. Ozone Action estimates that about 10,000 tons of CFC's are
smuggled per year.

So going to refund all these folk money?

Another fun fact is Freon is 10% more efficent at cooling than the gasses in use ONLY IN AMERICA.

Returning freon to the cooling, refegeration systems will save MORE energy than inflating all tires on EARTH to 60 PSI.

“A bigger question: What

“A bigger question: What will replace these chemicals? Experts say that some substitutes, with less global warming impact, can be made with new HFCs or by using ammonia or butane. But others are needed,” Fahrenthold wrote.

These chemicals have been used in the past and are not nearly as efficient as freon so the use of a less efficient gas means more energy will be used to get the same cooling effect, hence more of that ghastly CO2 will be produced.   There's no end to this!  Were all going to die!!

Liberal Solution

I think the scientists should look at a way to get rid of the liberals. Just think how quickly the earth would cool without all that hot air being blown out everyday?

   Excuse me for being a

Excuse me for being a little cynical but one of the goals of the extreme environmentalists is that we all convert to vegetarianism and that those vegetables be locally grown.  It isn't just the radical Islamists who want to go back to the 16th century.  Refrigeration is the backbone of large farms and the meat industry.  The scourge of 1960's 'back to the land' Hippies is still with us.  Most of them left their communes but now they and their liberal sympathizers are wishing to force their primitive lifestyle upon the rest of us.

Another case of the cure being worse than the disease

I've been working in the heating and air conditioning field for close to 25 years now. And personally the whole CFC destroying the ozone was a bunch of horse squeeze.  Even the scientist that orginally came up with the theory and come back and said he was wrong.  And the hole was never really a hole just a thinning that took place every year when the sun wasn't hitting the south pole, and guess what it takes sunlight to make ozone. And with the south pole not getting sunlight 6 months out of the year, the production of ozone is decreased.

Back in the late 70's early 80's when all of this got started, the rumor was that DuPont's patents were expiring on the refrigerants that were in wide use at that time. And once those expired then all the royalties they were getting was going to dry up. And to prevent that, the ozone crisis was "created".

And really unless a refrigeration or air conditioning system has a leak, it does not release any refrigerant into the atmosphere. And if there is no leak, a typical air conditioner can use the same refrigerant (freon) for 20 years or more with no loss of efficiency.  And that includes making sure the equipment is well maintained

A New Crisis?

Nothing a new tax rushed through Congress by the Dems won't fix.

Oh dear sweet lord, when will someone come to their senses?

The entire earth and it's atmosphere act like a heat sponge.

That is why there is a 20 degree difference between the temperature at 3:00 PM and the temperature at 3:00 AM.

The earth and atmosphere absorbs the energy of the sun and then releases that energy to space in the absence of the sun.

Sincerely,

the nozone

All they ever needed to do is recover refrigerant. That means it is pumped out and reused in the same unit instead of released. It could have become SOP in the 80's and this would have limited releases to accidents. We never had to depart from the proven refrigerants and this mess is a real mess. It's a nisance for Contractors as well but we are the ones ROTFLATWTTB.

The old refrigerants simply displaced air. The new ones are harmful to people, (tumors, enlarged sex organs etc). It is not uncommon for a large rootop unit to dump it's refrigerant (60 pounds or so)  into a building due to cap tube chafing or coil damage and that's even more significant now. The new refrigerants work at higher pressures and temperatures (how would you like that change for your car?) and the jury is out on longevity. We've held out and sold the R22 systems as long as we could but now they're gone. Just about everybody recovers and recycles refrigerant now so WHERE is the problem coming from?

Some of the activity on

Some of the activity on restructuring the environment may lead to nature crisis. For an instant, constructing a new road can sometimes destroy homes for wildlife in the process. Wetlands and the natural habitat for wildlife are in the path of danger when roads are planned. In order to maintain wildlife habitat, compensatory wetlands must be constructed when natural, protected wetlands are affected by construction. Trauth hopes this interdisciplinary research project helps officials as they make decisions concerning roadways. She wants to develop a process that can be used to determine where roads can be built with the least impact on the ecosystem. This will make home owners to be disgusted and it
possibly to need more extra cash to solve the problem.Read more click http://personalmoney...

"Trapping" what?

Someone needs to point out to the unnamed "scientists," and the liberal morons who quote them, that the refrigerants used in cooling system are not "greenhouse" gasses as they do NOT trap heat.  Those gasses are used because they quickly RELEASE heat in the hot part of the system.  You don't use gasses that trap heat in a cooling system, for that would defeat the entire purpose of a cooling system.  What good would they do if they didn't allow heat to be released quickly and efficiently?
