Bozell Column: (Almost) Nothing's Sacred

In advance of Tinseltown's parade of Christmas insensitivities - they've already unloaded the marijuana movie "A Very Harold and Kumar 3-D Christmas" - let us stipulate that it's not just seasonal. The manufacturers of pop culture thrive on offending every traditional value.

Start with Pamela Anderson, the ridiculously surgically enhanced former Playboy Playmate, home-movie porn specialist and "Baywatch" star. She's been cast to play - are you ready? - the Virgin Mary in a TV "Christmas" special in Canada.

It's called "A Russell Peters Christmas," and Peters will play Mary's husband Joseph in the sketch "comedy." Peters was raised Catholic and attended a Catholic school until eighth grade. It didn't take, to say the least. The show will air as a holiday "centerpiece" in Canada on CTV and the Canadian Comedy Network, which also runs U.S. shows such as "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report."

Publicists are already touting the show with the usual lingo. It's "an irreverent twist on the Christmas special making it unlike anything viewers have seen before," and will be "tastier and more dangerous than a cup of spiked eggnog." Pamela Anderson does have reverence for one cause: Her Facebook page profile picture is an anti-fur symbol. Mock Jesus, but love animals.

Another very serious (if not sacred, surely profound) day on the American calendar is Sept. 11. That means 9/11 is just begging for satire, if you're Fox and Seth MacFarlane, at least. Two years after 9/11, college reporter Matt Chayes interviewed MacFarlane and said he "claims he would never do a 9/11 gag." That pledge has been violated repeatedly. Now he's devoted the entire plot of the Nov. 13 episode of "Family Guy" to mocking 9/11.

Stewie, the super-smart baby, invents a time machine. Pal, Brian, the talking dog, and he travel back in time to retrieve an old tennis ball. In the process, current Brian warns past Brian about 9/11, and, as a result, it's avoided. But when they return to the present, they find out that George W. Bush lost the 2004 election because he had no 9/11 with which to scare the public.

This historical twist results in Bush creating a second Confederacy - naturally - which starts another Civil War with nuclear strikes that kill 17 million people and turn the U.S. into a post-apocalyptic wasteland, of course. So the duo goes back to fix the past, and after they succeed, the baby declares, "We did it Brian! We made 9/11 happen! High five!"

Time magazine declared, "It sounds custom-made for a 'too soon' label, and it probably is. (Probably?) But avid 'Family Guy' viewers live for 'too soon' moments, no matter how sensitive the material."

This was proven over at their sister publication, Entertainment Weekly. EW couldn't be that judgmental. They took a poll and found only 19.5 percent in their web universe said, "Yes, it was incredibly insensitive," while the other 80.5 percent state "No, this was standard 'Family Guy' fare."

This is a terrible set of poll questions. One can agree almost weekly that "Family Guy" is "incredibly insensitive" and it's "standard" behavior for them.

Speaking of messing up the time machine, Hollywood is really going back in time to smear J. Edgar Hoover. They've never forgiven him for being a staunch anti-communist or for mucking around in the personal lives of their heroes, from the Kennedy's to Martin Luther King. When Time asked actor Leonardo DiCaprio how true the movie was to life he replied, "Historically, it's incredibly accurate."

That's quite a clash with the quote from his cast mate Armie Hammer, who plays Clyde Tolson, the close Hoover aide alleged to be his lover. "What really brings the film to life are the scenes that no one can prove happened."

The movie's climactic scene arrives when Hoover tells Tolson he's getting married. Tolson and Hoover wrestle, and Tolson kisses Hoover, only to have Hoover reject him. As Tolson storms out, Hoover begs Tolson not to leave and even says, "I love you." There's also a creepy scene when Hoover's mother dies. Hoover descends into a crying mess as he puts on a dress and a necklace.

The accusation that Hoover cross-dressed came from a convicted perjurer with mob ties; Soviet disinformation agents circulated rumors that Hoover was gay. But Hollywood doesn't care about sources or evidence when it makes "historical" movies. What they cared about was using ersatz history to promote the gay agenda.

Now that agenda is the closest thing to a unanimously sacred cause in Hollywood. Movie director Brett Ratner was just unceremoniously canned as director of the 2012 Academy Awards broadcast. He crossed the line by saying "Rehearsals are for (gay F-bombs)." That will get you fired. Mocking an FBI director, 9/11 or the Virgin Mary? That is apparently "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying."

A Canadian "sketch comedy" about the Nativity?

Submitted by JohnMcGrew on Sat, 11/19/2011 - 9:11am.

I thought Canada had a "Human Rights Commission" to prevent and/or punish those who intentionally seek to offend religious sensibilities. I guess it only deploys when it's non-Christians who are offended. Who knew?

Response to sarcasm

Submitted by DumbCanuck on Sat, 11/19/2011 - 11:17am.

I get it, but I want to point out that Christians are not considered a "protected class" here. A while back, a heavy-metal, punk-rock (not sure which -- on the other hand, does it really matter?) band recorded a song with the chorus of "Kill All Christians".

Yep. You guessed it. The HRC wouldn't touch the case, even after a formal complaint had been filed, precisely because Christians were not deemed to be a "protected class".

Homosexuals, on the other hand, ARE a "protected class."

(Love the liberal-left dogma. Now THAT's sarcasm!)

Brent Bozell needs to grow a thicker skin.

Submitted by PolishBear on Sat, 11/19/2011 - 9:46am.

Yes, this is the time of year when conservative Christians get all bent out of shape about how their religious sensitivities aren't being respected enough. Someone says "Happy Holidays" (instead of "Merry Christmas"), and they just go ballistic and start calling for boycotts of the offending department store. And if television programmers take on the holiday season without the proper amount of reverence and bowing down before Precious Baby Jesus, WATCH OUT!

Well, Brent Bozell needs to grow a thicker skin. Christmas is the ONLY religious observance in the United States that causes both the public and private sectors to virtually grind to a halt. Non-Christians have little choice but to go along with it, so try to forgive them if they approach the holiday season with a degree of irreverence and risque humor.

"How many movies have been

Submitted by PolishBear on Sat, 11/19/2011 - 10:27am.

"How many movies have been released during Ramadan that swipes at Islam?"

Hmmm, sounds like the perfect project for Fox News. Talk to Greg Gutfeld about it. Maybe he could produce an anti-Islam segment for "Red Eye" ... although my guess is that he probably already has. Maybe he can poke fun at the fact that Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset during the month of Ramadan, an expression of faith that I don't think most rotund televangelists would even be CAPABLE of.

My guess is that the reason the Christmas season is ripe with possibilities for irreverent humor is the same reason I cited above: Christmas is the ONLY religious holiday that pervades American culture for both Christians and non-Christians alike. EVERYONE is familiar with the Christmas story. All the familiar elements of Christmas folklore are virtually BEGGING for parody. Even the shameless commercialism of the Christmas season was addressed by Charlie Brown and Snoopy.

"Non-Christians have little

Submitted by redfish on Sat, 11/19/2011 - 1:04pm.

"Non-Christians have little choice but to go along with it, so try to forgive them if they approach the holiday season with a degree of irreverence and risque humor."

I'm a non-Christian, and non-religious. Speak for yourself and your own proclivities.

The religious side of Christmas is still rarely talked about in any public forum, movies, TV. I expect a token "Jesus was born today" and Bible quotation advertisement on Fox News, to appeal to people who watch their channel. Mainly Christmas in the public square is about Santa Claus and Christmas trees and giving gifts and watching touchy-feely programs like "It's a wonderful life". Lately its about Ashton Kutcher and Katy Perry and other celebrities doing over-produced theater schtick like "Baby, it's cold outside," and Mariah Carey trying to sell her new Christmas album. Its mostly secular. I don't feel at all like a "religious observance" is bringing my life to a halt.

I also think groups that sue businesses for saying "Merry Christmas", or businesses that think its offensive to say "Merry Christmas" are being ridiculous, given that what 90% of the country is Christian, and most celebrations aren't even religious. This may not be a "War on Christmas!", but it is about idiotic politics from the left.

Coming from a Jewish background, I think its stupid when Jewish people get bent out of shape when someone says "Merry Christmas" to them and act like they're being discriminated against. In the mean time, I'm going to enjoy the good spirit and decoration.

If there was something I wanted to make fun of, it would be other aspects of the holiday, like celebrities cashing in and ruining 50s Christmas songs which once had some charm to them. Anyone who is grumpy about Christians reading in their churches about the Virgin Mary and the Wise Men needs to get a life.

"Coming from a Jewish background, I think its stupid when Jewish people get bent out of shape when someone says "Merry Christmas" to them and act like they're being discriminated against. In the mean time, I'm going to enjoy the good spirit and decoration."

Not specific to any group but in general when people get offended by someone wishing them Merry Christmas or what ever the event, Hanukkah, Ramadan, Kwanzaa if someone wishes you a happy (insert holiday here), it is rediculous. Be happy! They are wishing you well. Isn't that what's important? For us when we had friends or co-workers who celebrated other holidays, we made sure to either participate with them or at least wish them a happy whatever is appropriate.
My take on the suing businesses is it reminds me of the bitter kid in school who no one liked because he was an ass but he knew all the rules and would use them against everyone and try to make them miserable like himself.

Hey, bozo, how many department stores have a policy that says "you must not say Happy Holidays"? Zero. No one will get fired for saying Happy Holidays.

How many department stores have a policy that says "you must not say Merry Christmas"? Too many. And employees will get fired/reprimanded/suspended for violating that policy.

It's crystal clear there is a war on Christmas, bozo, so open up your eyes and stop exposing your stupidity. No one wants to see it.

War against everyone

Submitted by jon_torlin on Sat, 11/19/2011 - 1:08pm.

Actually, it's a war against everyone, just that the attacks on Christians are the most prominent because they are the most easiest.  I say easiest because unfortunately, there are too many Christians that seem to have forgotten that it's ok to fight back and we have too many that are "turning the other cheek" and that's all they do.  Which is ironic, they accuse Christians of the things that they do themselves, attack, kill, etc.

But I say everyone because it's Islam vs Everyone Else.  Islam is a patient lot and as they go after Christians, they will also go after Judaism(That's Jewish for those of you in Rio Linda), Buddhists, Taoists, Tibetan Monks, Hinduism, Atheists, anything else that's not of Islam.  The people attacking Christmas and Christians are just helping those Islamists and there's a LONG history of that.  Longer than the existence of the United States.

Again, there's nothing against fighting back against these attacks.  If anyone who claims to be a Christian says that Christians should not fight back is a LIAR.  Even if that person doesn't know he/she is lying, it's STILL a LIE.

-Jon

they can fight back - but they should do it with love. Turn the other cheek and all. We're already victorious...we know that, it is written. All this acrimony from Bozell and these threads does nothing for the Christian cause.

The Middle East...now that's another story.  That's actual persecution, and I'd have trouble telling any Christian to turn the other cheek in that situation.

Submitted by jon_torlin on Sat, 11/19/2011 - 4:25pm.

redfish, you may not realize this, but while there's a "war on religion in general," no one seems to be waging war on Islam, which is not just a religion but a form of government for Muslims.  Why do you suppose that is?

There are many attempts to bring Sharia to this country and CAIR is the front runner for it.  It's prevalent in several cities already, most notably Tulsa, OK, and Dearborn, MI.  Even a couple of the OWS sites were being encouraged and paid for by CAIR among others.  Judges are even (and wrongfully) using Sharia to dictate a few cases here in the states.

So this "war on religion in general" seems to be a bit one-sided when one of the biggest cults in the world is the one that stands to win when that "war on religion in general" is over, wouldn't you say?

You know the really funny part, Jon?

Submitted by Newsbubba on Sat, 11/19/2011 - 6:13pm.

If the Moooooooslems and the RBFSOB communists should succeed in winning this country, they will immediately begin to kill each other.  Communists can't stand ANY religion, and Mooooooooslems can't stand ANY person who isn't a follower of the camel driver.

Even funnier, if the Moooooooslems defeat the RBFSOB communists, then the various sects within the crazy pack of fools will begin to kill each other off.

If the RFBSOB commies win, well they've already proved more than once that they will willingly kill millions of their own followers for any little old reason.

Any way you skin it, unless democracy and Christianity win out, the question, "Can't we just all get along" seems a pretty silly concept.

Lock and load.

Everyone who is not yet under the yoke of Islam is at war with Islam, whether they know it or not.

Islam divides the earth into two spheres, Dar al Islam and Dar al Harq : the world of submission and the world of war, respectively.  In the former, all are subject to the will of Allah. i.e. they are subject to sharia.  In the latter is incessant jihad promulgated by the followers of Islam whose object is to impose sharia on the non-muslim world by force.

No Infidel will be allowed to live in peace unless the last Muslim has drawn his last breath.  It is not possible to peacefully coexist with this religion.

I believe he might be wrong about Islam, as well.

I see no moderation either in the Quran or in the practices inherent in the Islamic Jihad Movement.

Those Muslims Rupert lives amongst are either biding their time before revealing their true commitment to their religion; or are awaiting their turn to be beheaded by the jihadists because of a lack of proper reverence for and adherence to the dictates of The Prophet.

The Koran and Hadith spell all this out in detail. No true believer can tolerate the infidels. [that's you and everybody else who does not believe as they do] The history of this vile religion is 1400 years of war, murder and pillage aimed at the subordination of all infidels to Islam.  They attack ALL non-muslim neighbors.  ALL.  They have done so for 1400 years.  This will not change unless Islam undergoes a reformation.

There can be no negotiation with these people.  This can be seen by answering one simple question :  which of your life, your faith or your liberty do you propose to surrender to them in exchange for peace?  For this is exactly what they demand under pain of jihad.

I have an alternative suggestion : Peaceful coexistence may also be obtained by arranging face-to-face meetings between Allah and his followers.  Of course Obama and the entire Democrat party have no stomach for any of this which is why they are unfit to lead the United States of America.

By the time the Crusades finally began, Muslim armies had conquered two-thirds of the Christian world.

Glen Beck who so often is wrong, was berated for his commentary to this effect. Glen Beck was right. My point is Islam is not inherently bad...only its jihad bent fringes and its war against women and (yes I said it!) gays. Let's face it...a Muslim caliphate poses no threat to the West. Submitted by Rupert Cadell on Sat, 11/19/2011 - 12:21pm.

Actually, he addressed your question precisely. In order to parody a religion or a holiday in a mass marketed television show or movie, the filmmaker would need for the majority of the audience to be familiar with at least the basics of said religion or holiday. Since the Christmas narrative is extremely well-known to the vast majority of Americans, not only are the parodied elements recognizable, but there is a sense that we are poking fun at ourselves.

By comparison, what does the average American know about Islam and its observances that would be so ripe for satire? I'm sure an hour of jokes about the Fatimid era and Zakat would be a huge mainstream hit.

The poster above was absolutely correct, the cheap shots at Fox News commentators and televangelists notwithstanding. An obscure (in the U.S.) holiday celebrated by a culture that most Americans associate with terrorism and little else vs. a ubiquitously observed holiday that comes with a widely-known story and a set of rituals that most of the populace indulges in for well over a month (I'm sitting in a cafe as we speak trying to drown out syrupy Xmas music with my iTunes and headphones and we're still 5 days from Thanksgiving). The question of why other religions are not lampooned, political correctness aside, is obvious. The jokes would go over most Americans' heads with a resounding whoosh.

Well no, there certainly is not anything funny about those things that some muslims do that so many Westerners like to believe all muslims do.

But my point is that jokes about the actual religious aspects of Islam would be met with blank stares from most Americans. To cite a religion less often affiliated with terrorism, someone else also asked why Hinduism isn't parodied. Same response. Wry one-liners about the many arms of Vishnu or the overcommercialization of Diwali or how grandma always overcooks the Dal Makhani and naan every year wouldn't exactly resonate with Americans, would they?

I thought the Stoning of Sonya (can't remember the last name) was a powerful and well-made film, if that helps at all.

I'd certainly see nothing wrong with dramatizing some of the very disturbing elements of patriarchal Muslim culture that you're talking about. But again, that's relevant to cultural practices not a specific holiday observance. It would be like someone making a film all about some social problem we have - say cyberbullying or obesity - and saying that because it's about a Western social issue, it's somehow by default about Christmas.

No, I disliked it because it was painfully unfunny. I thoroughly enjoy when liberalism, especially of the bourgey self-righteous variety, is taken down a peg or three; but, and I don't mean this with any disrespect, just my opinion: Attempts at humour that come from an emphatically right-wing position tend to fall really flat. A rare exception, in my mind, would be the show King of the Hill (which, surprisingly, I've seen Mr. Bozell very misinformedly rail against in one of his anti-cartoon screeds). But that's because it's quirky and has well-developed characters, and the criticisms of liberalism are situational and believable.

I admit...

Submitted by TempusFugit on Sat, 11/19/2011 - 5:22pm.

...I haven't seen American Carol. The trailer looked funny to me, but only in the "funny cuz it's true" sense. King of the Hill was a great show, and it mostly was right wing, or at least moderate, skewering left wing stereotypes with a skill rarely seen. It often portrayed left wing screwballs in a sensitive light, showing them as more misguided, rather than evil. But I find it impossible to believe that no right wing humor is funny (I know you didn't say that, but bear with me). There's a surprising dearth of it on television and in the movies, and standup comedy. Why is that? Maybe Hollywood is DELIBERATELY censoring it. Mike Judge did another show called (I think) the Goode Family, which went after many cherished left wing, politically correct sacred cows. Critics hated it and it flopped. So was it really that bad (never saw it either), from a man whose work is consistently high quality, or did the critics WANT to hate it, because it went against their politics?

BTW ventriloquist Jeff Dunham and his sidekick Brian "Guitar Guy" Haner are both right wing and incredibly funny. Dunham is the highest paid comedian in the world right now, and there's a market for right wing comedy, but a lack of people giving it to us. That's one reason why, among many, that Dunham is so successful

Goode and Dunham

Submitted by jon_torlin on Sat, 11/19/2011 - 5:44pm.

I tried watching the Goode Family, and it's like you said, went after the sacred cows and would have been funny except it was painfully accurate in terms of how people were just giving up so many things to "protect the planet" and even making their dog a vegan (dog went nuts and reduced the squirrel population in one episode, that was hilarious), and etc.  The painful part of watching it was that I KNOW people that are living like that, and they are just plain BROKE doing all those stupid things!  So there you go on that.  I suspect that might be why people didn't watch it as much.

Dunham is indeed extremely funny and I really enjoy how he can change the range of his voices for certain situations and stories that he tells which makes it even funnier.  The Guitar Guy was funny on the Christmas Special they did last year or so, especially when Dunham gave a blooper of sorts using the wrong word(poliosis I think it was?) for something which came out really funny and Guitar Guy was trying SO hard to regain his composure and even THAT was hilarious to watch.  He started to look at Dunham and Dunham says "don't look at me!"  You know if he had, both would have collapsed on stage in absolute laughter.

I never get tired of watching Dunham, even with his recent stuff.  Just one thing, I tell people about the time he did a stint at a Boston show(can be seen on Youtube) and you KNOW he was in LibCentral, the host was lame and it was one of the worst times Dunham must have had there(not his fault).  Just look for it on Youtube under Dunham and Boston University and prepare to cringe and feel sorry for Dunham.  Wow....

...I saw him in Austin TX! That place is a commie island in an ocean of sanity. But the audience was incredibly receptive to Guitar Guy's anti-Obama song, Obama's Gotta Go and God Bless Arizona, which was about SB 1070, the anti-illegal immigrant bill. The idiot behind me, in a whiny voice, loudly complained after Haner finished about the songs. Mr Whinyass Liberal was trying to act like he was moderate, saying he only gets his news from the Daily Show. Jon Stewart does not count as a moderate in my book (others here may differ). If my missus hadn't been gripping my arm vicelike (I probably still have impressions of her fingers in my forearm, and that was a year and a half ago), I'd have turned around and started something with him.

I have the Christmas Show DVD: (to the tune of "Oh Holy Night): "Oh holy craaaaaaap, I think I shot my foot off!!!" And of course Jingle Bombs: "dashing thru the sand, with a bomb strapped to my back, I had a nasty plan for Christmas in Iraq, I got thru checkpoint A, but not thru checkpoint B, that's when I got shot in the ass by the US military"

I'll kindly begoff watching the Boston video. It'd probably make my blood pressure go too high

Goode Family was pretty

Submitted by Rupert Cadell on Sun, 11/20/2011 - 2:00pm.

Goode Family was pretty funny. But I think I liked King of the Hill much better because while Hank was clearly a conservative man, he also seemed like a real person rather than a caricature. The main characters in G.F. were a little to reliant on their silly liberal politics to act like human beings. Hank may have often expressed his fondness for Ronald Reagan, but that didn't define him.

But to be fair, shows like that usually flail a bit in the first season. Look at long-running shows like Simpsons, Family Guy, King of the Hill...all of their early episodes seem a little bit off compared to the more recent stuff.

Lets just pretend that the odds of the Holy Bible being right on all counts is, to choose numbers that the unwashed socialists love, only 1 out of 100.

So these people who trash Christianity have a 99% chance of just dying someday, and turning into compost. No Heaven, no hell, no afterlife, no nothing.  They have nothing to fear?  The good news is, they are pretty much compost in this life, so they will be well prepared to be dirt after death.

Well, there is that little bothersome 1%. What if there is a Heaven and a hell? What if there is an eternity of an afterlife that you are choosing by your actions in this life? What if?

Brothers and sisters, that 1% is all it takes for me to not want to risk eternity in a place called hell, mainly because it will be filled with liberals, and the thought of having to spend eternity with them really is hell!

I don't get it, what does all this have to with Christ anyways?

Submitted by teg on Sat, 11/19/2011 - 12:55pm.

You keep trying to squeeze Christ into something he doesn't belong in and then you get all upset when the pagans make fun of your sorry asses for doing so! Get real! Where is "Christmas" in the Bible? It isn't! Your sad attempt to replace the Sun God on the Sun God's birthday just envites the pagans to mock you. Its their day, quit trying to shove your God in it!

Christ was a Jew. Chirst was a devout Jew. Christ followed the seven annual Holy Days and the Sabbath as laid out in Leviticus and it is He who is the one who defined what it is to be a Christian, not some 4th century group of pagans in the church of Rome!

Speaking of that 4th century group of pagans redefining Christ, I found out where all this crazy crap that also isn't anywhere in the Bible about the "Trinity" came from this week! It was injected by Constantine's pagan buddy from Egypt! I had forgotten about the "Mysteries of Mysteries" the fact that Osiris (also know as Nemrod in the Bible) married his mother, Isis, and his child from her, Horus, were the Gods, equal and from each other! Sound familiar? I kid you not! Straight out of Baylon via Eygpt, I give you that stinking pile of paganism everyone calls the "Trinity!"

You so called Christians don't even follow your Christ! Then you whine and complain because your pagan buddies hate you for it. So, when the spring rolls back around, gather your little signs of fertility, your colored eggs and your bunny rabbits and go pray to you Sun God at sunrise. Pray to the goddess of fertility to bless you with more kids... as Harold and Kumar smoke another spliff!

Pretty much everything you wrote is factual, so what? Discussing "facts" in relation to an entirely faith based system is more than a little silly (as is the author's per-occupation with painting everything that mocks religion as liberal).

The bottom line, is that followers of any cult or mythology are the only ones who have a right to define it. As for movies or other media that offend, the answer's pretty simple; don't watch it. If it's funded in any way by the government; insist that your representatives do everything possible to withdraw that funding. There are plenty of conservatives who don't buy into religion.

You're contradicting yourself.---- First you say that Christians stole pagan holidays, then you said Christianity was taken over by pagans.

Christians, by large part, were pagans, who modified their own holidays. Pagan beliefs were often referred to, after the fall of Rome, as "old beliefs." The culture evolved.

A lot of the nonsense arguments against Christians resemble the nonsense arguments about Jews in the 19th century, they're desperate.

The pagans didn't bend to get their followers back. So, Constantine's little gathering there in Rome and subsequent murdering of Christians until they excepted paganism with new labels doesn't sound to me like a church excepting pagan beliefs. From my perspective that's a bunch of pagans doing what "librels" do every day. When they lose the argument they change the language and reserve until it is excepted.

so, I don't get the rest of your arguement and will move along....

You still haven't really

Submitted by redfish on Sun, 11/20/2011 - 2:02pm.

You still haven't really explained what any of what you're saying has to do with anything. The actions of men like Constantine aside, the move from pagan beliefs to Christian beliefs was a cultural shift that was going on. Already before Christianity started as a religion, the Roman intellectual class was moving towards both Stoicism and neo-Platonic theories, which both fit very neatly within Christian doctrine. Stoicism, which had already posited the existence of a single God and single creator of the universe, and had argued that passions needed to be tempered in life. Neo-Platonism, which argued that there was a single unity behind history, which was a teleological result of an unfolding logic (logos). Jesus fit the role of the "ideal Cynic" that was expounded by Stoic philosophers -- someone who would, living a humble life, evangelize and teach people about the errors of their ways. It was somewhat fated that he came from the Jewish community, since a lot of pagans viewed Jews as strange and irrational for their religious practices, and Jews had a history of defying secular authority in continuing their beliefs. Judaism was the perfect vehicle from which to criticize Roman society, which was already in decline although the Roman Emperor still wanted to be seen as a deity. Keep in mind that, technically, Jesus was a Roman too.

Whether certain theological doctrines came from Jesus' original disciples or from Roman philosophers is kind of irrelevant to me, looking at it from this perspective (and as a non-Christian). The spread of Christian beliefs was the product of cultural changes happening in the Roman Empire. It would have happened even if Constantine never existed. It would have happened in some form if Jesus never existed (which some people actually theorize is true). And its just natural than when a culture evolves it also evolves its old traditions to new purposes. Even if the West moves towards atheism today, for instance, our culture is still going to be carrying the baggage of a lot of things that came out of the Christian tradition, and evolve it to secular purposes.

The relationship between pagans and Christians is kind of irrelevant, and there's no reason to bring it up outside of an academic context.

I made note to say "Christian beliefs", not "Christianity". Ideas analogous to Christian beliefs were already spreading before Christianity existed. Roman culture was already at a crossroads. If you don't believe that, read what was happening around that time.

I happen to believe Jesus did exist, and it was somewhat fated that someone like him would exist, and in turn put to death by the Roman Empire. Which, in my point of view, is somewhat the point of the religion.

I have it, as a matter of fact. Roman culture was disintegrating into hedonism and the spread of Christianity acted as a preservative for a time, but it wasn't widespread enough to save it.
By their very definition "Christian" beliefs are based on Christ and therefore would have no existence without Him.
Christ was put to death at the behest of the Jewish religious leaders of the day; Pilate was no more than a reluctant tool in their hands. The Roman Empire bore no guilt in the matter.

I'm talking about the fact

Submitted by redfish on Sun, 11/20/2011 - 3:51pm.

I'm talking about the fact that beliefs about ethics and metaphysics and so forth that became firmly established with Christian doctrine had already taken root with other philosophies that had were becoming popular among the Roman intellectual class. Philosophers that argued those doctrines, too, were critics of the hedonism of the Roman Empire.

My interpretation of the passion of Christ is that the entirety of humanity, being everyone involved at the time, was responsible for the death of Christ. The blame wasn't meant to be put on a specific group. The tragedy was that a good man was made to die, when it wasn't necessary for it to happen. Pilate was reluctant to do it, but he didn't stop it. Even some of Jesus' disciples felt that they were guilty for not doing more to stop it. The death of Christ was the result of the sins of mankind.

You have a different interpretation?

That would demonstrate that

Submitted by redfish on Sun, 11/20/2011 - 4:44pm.

That would demonstrate that even though people have free will, they are bound by the fact that they're imperfect. In theory, there are many things Pilate could have done; he could have recused himself from his position, forcing someone else to make it (and that person then could recuse himself, and so on), or found some other means to deal with a potential riot. But for whatever reason, he could not be brought to do anything else.

Its also said in the Bible in different forms that all people are children of God, or Jews are children of God. Its also said in Galatians that Christians are sons of God through faith in Christ.

Whether I think Jesus was a madman depends on what reality I put behind that statement. Whatever the truth is beyond that, by the statement, Jesus was both challenging the Jewish priests to a part of their religion they forgot, and challenging the Roman view of the Roman Emperor as a deity.

Pilate had no grounds to recuse himself, and no legal precedent to do so under Roman law. He was the prefect of that province and it was his job to authorize any legal, Roman executions. You're applying modern day thinking to a 2,000 year old event in a radically different culture.

Jesus said that he was the literal Son of God, the prophesied Messiah, the Lion of Judah, the Word made Flesh, the second Being of the Trinity. There is no way to mix that up with generic 'sons of God' unless you're deliberately trying to hide behind obfuscation in order to avoid the point.

Pilate didn't need grounds to

Submitted by redfish on Sun, 11/20/2011 - 5:17pm.

Pilate didn't need grounds to recuse himself, he could have simply refused, even if that meant him being punished, even executed for the act. That is the definition of free will. One shouldn't have expected Pilate to throw himself on the cross, when there was likely someone else in line that would take his place and would willingly do the act that he wouldn't do. But that's what being human means.

It just depends on what you believe the 'Son of God' and the 'Word Made Flesh' to mean, in any sense of the expressions, literal or generic. Does that mean Jesus was a magical, ethereal being with special powers? Or does it mean he was a singularly important figure in God's plan, where he was able to speak God's word, and so was a personification of his divine attributes?

Even if I believed the second, it wouldn't commit me to being a Christian in the fullest sense of what that means. And even if I did believe he were a madman, it wouldn't mean he wasn't a good person. Are mad people all bad people and deserve to die?

But I think the conversation is getting off track. I'm just explaining my point of view, and not trying to convince you. My main concern in my original response was that there are unfounded attacks on Christians that I don't think make any sense. If Catholics believe the Trinity is true, what difference does it make that some ex-pagan first said it , if that were the case?

~Nope

Submitted by Wrathful Brunette on Sun, 11/20/2011 - 7:04pm.

Free will is the ability to make a choice without being coerced one way or another. If someone forces you into a corner where you must pick from an array of unappealing options, it's got nothing to do with free will and everything to do with pragmatism. If you had a free will choice in the matter, it would be to not be in that situation in the first place.

If your wife were held hostage, and your only way to save her were to light yourself on fire, you're not making a free will choice to light yourself on fire, or a free will choice for her to die. Your choice is being forced by your circumstances.

Being so insane that you think you're the literal Son of God, an immortal being of unlimited power who has taken on the human form, and will shortly transcend and transform that body and ascend the throne of heaven to sit at the right hand of God the Father Almighty, precludes the possibility of being simply 'good'. You're either deranged beyond all imagining, or you're right.

No one said mad people are bad and deserve to die. I pointed out that Jesus' voluntary sacrifice on the cross was necessary to the redemption of humanity, and the whole reason He took on human form.

Many pagans were given glimpses of the Truth. Pagan myths of death and re-birth, redemption through sacrifice, were a pale foreshadowing of the coming of the Lamb of God.

I find the whole "War on

Submitted by Rupert Cadell on Sat, 11/19/2011 - 5:22pm.

I find the whole "War on Christmas" narrative a little hard to swallow if only because everyone who wants to celebrate it does just that. No one's told they can't engage in all of their preferred rituals and enchantments. Certainly no one is individually persecuted for it. And while satirical things certainly do exist, well, so do lots and lots of public and commercial elements that sincerely embrace it. Furthermore, the very notion of the holiday being under attack is ridiculously subjective and dependent on any given individual's perspective of what it should be. To the fervent orthodox Christian, the presence of secular imagery like Santa and Christmas Trees destroy the spirit of the holiday. To the person who see it as simply a time to get together with family and follow certain traditions, hyper-commercialism and Xmas music in every store by the 1st of November seems an affront. And to what seems to me to be something of a minority, the ambiguation of the holiday - Happy Holidays as the standardized salutation, the lack of manger pageants in schools, etc. - is the frontline of the war. We go through these complaints every year as though we're programmed, but in the end, is anyone's personal experience and enjoyment of Christmas really precluded by all of it?

But OK, so my second point. What exactly is it that Mr. Bozell is trying to do with these frequent anti-pop culture essays? They seem to appear quite frequently, but the only discernible thesis is that "These things exist and are bad." So is it intended simply as a PSA of sorts? Or is there some project of broadcast accountability, standardization of content, or even (dare I say) censorship that he is pursuing? A goal along these concrete lines is never really articulated, so I'm tempted to assume he means them simply as informative. I personally feel that Family Guy is rather brilliant, but it hardly seems like that's a perspective worth defending here, since most people are pretty set on their opinion of it. Any thoughts on this?

Rupert...

Submitted by TempusFugit on Sat, 11/19/2011 - 5:38pm.

...I'm hoping you're a reasonable guy, and will try to engage in a dialogue with you. I don't agree with Mr. Bozell all the time. In fact it might be 50% or less agreement. The man is entitled to his own opinion, since he owns this website. I enjoy thoroughly reading his opinions, even tho I don't always agree. I'm a libertarian, and would never dream of government sponsored censorship. But I think that this is a sick society, and getting worse, and all Americans should be concerned about the depravity so often on display these day. Here's a hypothetical: say a white man makes a sculpture of black men being lynched. People would protest it, and rightfully so. Would you support it as art? Are any subjects, from your point of view, strictly taboo? Has Mr. Bozell ever advocated strict censorship of a particular artwork, film, TV show? If so, please link.

Anyway I think all conservatives should be be massively concerned about the degradation of our culture and should put pressure on anyone who is exceeding extreme boundaries of depravity, good taste and morals, but only by grass roots, non-violent and non-governmental means.

I used to like Family Guy, but after the 2002-2005 hiatus, it became noticeably left wing and snarky. They even mocked Clinton a few times on the original run. I still enjoy reruns of the 1999-2002 run. I may be too sensitive tho. I think Rush Limbaugh even guest starred and Andrew Breitbart considers Seth McFarlane a friend

I was not claiming that

Submitted by Rupert Cadell on Sun, 11/20/2011 - 12:29am.

I was not claiming that Bozell has ever called for outright censorship. I was very honestly asking if anyone is aware of, or has a theory about, what his goal is in writing these articles. They offer little in-depth criticism or anything in the way of a plan for how these perceived social ills should be rectified. They are, basically, laundry lists of out-of-context examples of how media texts should be seen as offensive by conservatives. As I said, they seem to function simply as PSAs. But they are so frequently published and so fervently critical that it's surprising that he seems not to offer some sort of corrective. Or is the corrective simply "You should not watch these things"? I don't know.

A white person sculpting a lynching scene would not necessarily be offensive, in my opinion. That strikes me as a silly example, because what the artwork is conveying would obviously be crucial to establishing whether or not it's "racist." By the same token, Family Guy's representations of Christianity - not to mention every other sacred ideological cow - are much more complex than simply a character holding a sign that reads "Christianity is Bad." In my opinion, it is always good when these sorts of ideologies and values are pushed back against, even if it's to the point of ridicule and offense.

Thanks for calling my example...

Submitted by TempusFugit on Sun, 11/20/2011 - 12:43am.

...silly. I think it was a valid example and question. And I think you asking why Mr. Bozell writes columns on his own blog is silly too. The people his columns are aimed at get it. I almost never watch new TV anymore, and stick mostly with sports, reality shows about police such as First 48 and Border Wars, or reruns of old shows when TV was good. Mr. Bozell is wading thru the feces of what passes as culture these days, and alerts us to what we might find offensive. If you don't like it, then ask Mr. Bozell about it. Or just leave the blog. I'd never go to a liberal website and ask why they write about their subject matter.

I don't think I could ever call Family Guy, or its style of comedy, complex. It seems to be a series of random situations with fast and furious jokes, most of which wouldn't draw a chuckle. Kind of throw a lot of crap and see what sticks. It was kind of funny once, but Seth McFarlane sold out and now is just trying to get cheap laughs to gain liberal street cred

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to

Submitted by Rupert Cadell on Sun, 11/20/2011 - 11:27am.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend. I just wanted to convey that I don't think a depiction of a racist act (especially in a medium like sculpture) is necessarily racist itself. I feel like that would be like saying that Schindler's List is anti-Semitic.

And of course I don't question Bozell's right to publish on a site he owns. But okay, so if most conservatives on this site "get it," then my question would be what is the proper course of action after reading it? Does one simply nod in agreement and that's that, or do you feel compelled to do something?

Sorry, I guess I'm not really explaining this well. Anyway, my apologies again for any offense taken. I wrote that write before going to bed and was writing quickly and without really choosing words carefully.

Speaking of sports, time now to gear up for a day of football. Though unfortunately my team doesn't play til tomorrow.

Take care,

Rupert

For the record.

Submitted by Newsbubba on Sat, 11/19/2011 - 6:40pm.

I have no problem with people of any faith, or religion, or no religion at all, UNLESS some of that group feel like I need to be blown to bits because I don't believe in the smoke that they're trying to blow up my ass!

When we reach that point, I tend to get a bit testy.  When other members of the group whose members are trying to kill me seem not to be able to at least act a little offended by the actions of their believers, well that pisses me off, too.

I consider Muslims who go on TV and denounce in very strong, emotional, and real terms the actions of extremists in their religion to be some of the bravest people I have ever seen.  Problem is, you can count them on one hand, but they are truly brave people.

I consider politicians, actors, and commentators who fall all over themselves trying to make nice with this pack of fools to be the biggest cowards on the planet, and they can rot in hell, if there is such a place, when they expire.

Otherwise, I'm really a fun loving guy!

brent bozell on J.Edgar the movie

Submitted by lrgon on Sun, 11/20/2011 - 4:04pm.

"Speaking of messing up the time machine, Hollywood is really going back in time to smear J.

"The accusation that Hoover cross-dressed came from a convicted perjurer with mob ties; Soviet disinformation agents circulated rumors that Hoover was gay." ---B.Bozell

Hollywood studios produced some rare anti-communist films, one such movie starred John Wayne and James Arness and beauty Nancy Olson. The "plot" is about two FBI agents busting up a nest of red spies that have infiltrated the labor unions in post WWII Hawaii. Big Jim McClain was made back in 1952 The film was given bad reviews for its obvious anti-communist message.

Also, I will steal this next sentence from IMDB and not tell anyone.  A dramatized account of the role of the American PT Boats in the defense of the Philippines in World War II

in the recent News Busters dialogue. This should be a forum for intelligent debate. Instead it resembles a right wing MMfA. Disagreement is essential. Disagreement furthers the argument and gained wisdom. What do we have instead? Agreement. Confirmation Bias. Conservatives are the majority - we don't all have to agree with Brent Bozell and attack fellow conservatives who don't. We share the same values, but this is one of the most cantankerous comment sections on the internet. It doesn't speak well for the conservative cause, it doesn't speak well for conservative intelligence.

It only reinforces the false narrative of conservative hate. Obviously JFK was the result of conservative rhetoric....obviously Gabby Giffords was a victim of conservative hate speak. Targets on maps people!

Blonde, his use of ellipsis is quite interesting.

Submitted by drsamherman on Sun, 12/18/2011 - 9:46pm.

I use ellipsis too, but actually to continue a thought from the subject line into the body of the message itself. I also use them when making a casual comment.

In deb(bie)'s case, I notice the use of ellipsis coincides more with an effect we call "tethering" in neuropsychiatry. It is a very obscure phenomenon, but nonetheless one that is suggestive of deb(bie). "Tethering" really occurs when random, dissimilar thoughts are strung together in a graphic (written) fashion suggesting disorganization of thought patterns and randomness of meaning. Example: horse...oh yeah...circus...oh dunky is my brother...spaghetti for dinner...and so on and so forth. It is a rare, written representation of interrupted thought patterns that usually serves as evidence for some organic brain disease where dysgraphia is a more prominent manifestation perhaps than forms of speech impediments. The form of dysgraphia being displayed by deb(bie) suggests a pathology which warrants further examination.

Neuropsychiatry moment over.

Eugene Debs Hartke is a character from a book written by Kurt Vonnegut title Hocus Pocus.  He is no conservative, he hates capitalism,  has a huge ego and only cares about his own pleasures, he cares nothing for others.

Now why would this idiot identify himself with a character whose sole accomplishment in "life" was to sleep with as many women as people he killed?

Did you read my personal description or the actual book? Hocus Pocus was a fantastic read and I recommend it to anyone. I actually am named after the socialist candidate for president born in November 1855. It's sorta a joke since I hate all forms of socialism, communism and fascism.

But read Hocus Pocus...fabulous. Slaughter House five was the shiznatch too, along with Breakfast of Champions.

Eugene V Debs*

Submitted by cajun2 on Sun, 12/18/2011 - 9:53pm.

The first Eugene was indeed a commie/socialist leader of the labor party and worked for years to bring some attention to the commies here in this country.  He was a hero to Vonnegut and so named several of his characters in his books. The thing I did not like about Vonnegut, especially that he was a long time practicing member of the ACLU, was the hypocrisy of his books. His characters were always strange, odd characters, often violent, but he extolled their individual attributes. Yet he blamed that individuality for societies problems and all his books spoke of the eventual doom to the world as a result. He extolled the virtues of sameness in thinking and life( socialism) . If you dont get the contradictions, then you never really paid attention to the subtleties in Vonneguts writings.

People with intellect were able to discern the hypocrisy in his writings which could be why he was not that big a deal.

Do you really think I didn't know Eugene Debs Hartke was based on Vonnegut's hero? A writer can be liberal, and still be brilliant. Oh, and Vonnegut was a big deal.

Guess who else was a great liberal writer? Mark Twain. Who else you say? Tom Wolfe.

All three of these "libs" were funny as all heck too :) Are you one of those people that never watch liberal movies too? Are you afraid their crazy ideas might effect your strong conservative values.

In order to understand Vonnegut, I had to read his books...Oh my.

You have to understand the times for Vonnegut. He believed the commie nonsense about class warfare, redistribution of wealth, total equality, and big government.  Millions of people fell for this commie utopia. Problem is, that utopia cannot exist without the one big addition of TOTAL FACIST MILITARY  TYRANNICAL BIG GOVERNMENT necessary to impose that total equality, equal distribution of wealth.  All this cannot succeed with that horror of individuality and individual rights.  We know how those promises turned out don't we?   Instead of heavy metal music, comics  and lib writers,  try history.  China's Mao, Germany's Hitler, Russia's Stalin and Lenin, and a lil bit of Mussolini will tell you how that promise of utopia was so wonderful.

not a murderous dictator. Vonnegut's ideas were a function of his environment (academia and the burgeoning socialist European state) and they did nothing to damper the brilliance, and subtle humor that defined his works. Those crazy characters you spoke of were some of the most endearing I've encountered in written form - fantastic examples of the human condition.

Fact is, the admins don't actively monitor comments here. You are an active sock puppet with an active sock puppet account. And as such, your days are numbered. You lie. You put on a false face to appear as though you are a new user. There is nothing more loathed on the internet. Nothing.

So pack sand. You were banned today. You will be banned again soon. Me. Still on my first account not going to any lengths whatsoever to prove anything at all to a lying stupid sock puppet of a troll. People here know who and what I am. I don't have to prove it. Everything I have said and done here speaks to exactly what I am. And the fact that you think you can unnerve me by calling me a phony soldier just confirms even more that we have in fact faced off before under yet another one of your sock puppet accounts.

And I see you took my advice and tore off that word a day page from the calendar. Now the new word is clever. What is this, a calendar that uses synonyms for a week straight?

Finally, we have here a man that continues to push the labels of how measured everyone's intelligence here. Yet, he can't understand, utterly fails to understand, fail fail fail, fails to understand I have done nothing on this day or any day before to stop someone from making his voice known. And yet here we have this overflowing diaper wearing whining little sissy of a sock puppet troll making one post after another whining about how I am trying to silence him.

Up yours you stupid stupid stupid sock puppet snit. You can't effectively argue a damn thing being as stupid as you are. Yeah, I ain't proved dren here. Ain't proved a thing. Oh except all that stuff fully available to the entire planet showing what a lowlife sock puppet ass you are.

Dunk said he respected your service because I, my father, and his father all served.

I'm actually disabled from jumping out of a plane and a subsequent visit to an Army dentist (see: butcher). They send me a lousy 100 bucks a month. Thanks Army!

You wanted a substantive debate and here you are inferring something I did not intend.  No where did I state that Vonnegut was a murderous dictator.

He was a creative writer espousing his beliefs through fantastical characters.  His beliefs and his characters often were contradictory.   He based his ideas on a liberal socialist agenda in all its naive drive for utopia but one  that has proven to be murderous in its reality. Like many intellectuals,  the realities of human failings are never considered in attempts to bring their agenda to fruition.  Humans, by nature, aspire to individuality and persona though the desire to belong to a group is inherent.  This is why we have many different professions, fashion, creativity, artists etc  This is also why socialism is appealing to some but is doomed to failure.  This is what is missing from Vonneguts ideals portrayed by his characters and what is missing from the OWS protestors and similar movements prior in history.

I never stated that Vonnegut was not talented, I said that intelligent people recognized his simplistic portrayals and  naivete'  and lost interest in his works rather quickly.

You did...

sorta compare him to Mao and Stalin :) That's a common comparison when it comes to anything socialist in nature, but I get it. You're quite right as well. Intelligent people could see his simplistic characterizations. Unfortunately I read his books in college and thought they were the bees knees. I even went on a socialism kick - asked my parents what's so bad about Europe? They're socialists!

Indeed they had a great influence on my young political leanings, but many many subsequent readings have been with stronger political convictions. I greatly appreciate his wit and character development. How about his crazy wife and mother in Hocus Pocus! Hilarious!

Of course there's great conservative writers. Off the top of my head - Mark Steyn, Jonah Goldberg, Micheal Crichton absolutely destroyed Global Warming in "State of Fear". Great book.

Please read my post again when I spoke about Vonnegut.  First, I stated that his beliefs and ideals as portrayed by his characters in his books are those ideals admired and coveted by socialist/communist.  To so naively believe in a socialist utopia is the environment and ideals that led to the immersion of people like Mao, Hitler and Stalin.

I did not compare Vonnegut to those despicable dictators, I compared him to the "useful idiots" that naively followed the lies of those dictators.  See the difference?

And Michael Crichton was not always a conservative. Try reading some of his earlier works and  you will see an evolution in his thinking.  He was very bright fellow and a creative talent.   Luckily, his books will live on.

I see the difference

and I agree, but you did sort of compare them. Useful idiots were the Soviets favorite idiots, wouldn't you agree? I suppose all conversations of socialism lead to Mao, Hitler, Stalin and millions of deaths. The new useful idiots are Obama and almost every soul in Europe. "Oh, it can still work if it's a socialist republic!" Or some such nonsense.

I read Jurrassic Park, Sphere, Congo, Andromeda Strain, Eaters of the Dead. He's one of my favorites...maybe I'll do some rereading...I like to see the evolution of an author. Unfortunately I've witnessed the de-evolution of Stephen King. Not only is he a bleeding heart lib, his writing has been completely hit and miss.

The only two books worth reading from the last six years are Duma Key and Lisey's Story. Everything else take a pass...trust me or waste a few days of your life :)

Stephen King*

Submitted by cajun2 on Mon, 12/19/2011 - 1:20am.

He wrote one good book...The Stand...after that all whacko garbage.  Don't waste your time on King.

You want to see "prescience" in creative writing, try to read the very early works of Arthur Clark and Isaac Asimov. You would think that those guys had access to a time machine. If you want to read books that make you think, try anything by CJ Cherryh.  She's kind of a liberal, and dont read the fantasy stuff, just the sci fi.  She has some great books about cloning, different cultures from other planets that really make you think.

Now, time for old ladies to log off.  Behave yourself.

I always behave myself. Thanks for the suggestions, I'm always looking for good reads. I'm surprised you didn't like "It", my favorite King book of all time.

The absolute best books I've read recently are "An Instance of the Fingerpost " - a 1997 historical mystery novel by Iain Pears, and quite possible the best book of all time. Then there's "Geek Love" - a novel by Katherine Dunn.

In my opinion you haven't really read if you miss these two gems.
